The place is cosy as it is near to the riverside. The restaurant gets crowded towards the later evening. The waitress is proactive to clear the plate

The dishes are tasty, not oily not for the Yu Tiao.

Lobster noodle
The dish looks impressive but the noodle was sticky and bland and the sauce is not nice...another failed dish.

Service here was fast and prompt. Food quality was a hits and misses affair. I will not recommend this place to my friends though.

Thanks to OpenRice and Red House, I got to try out the new dim sum menu (available during lunch and dinner) and their signature seafood dishes.

Items from dim sum menu:

1) Chili Crab Pau

- filled with every bit of chili crab goodness (the sauce & crab meat) that oozes out upon your first bite. The chefs make the effort to cook the original chili crab dish, de-shell and fill each ‘pau’ with the sauce and crab meat.

2) Char Siew Pastry
- covered in a nice layer of baked to golden brown pastry, that’s flaky and not too heavy.

3) Steamed Pork Rib with Yam

- Usually served with just black beans and overly oily. Red House version of this common dish contains yam, adding fragrance and texture to it. Plus it’s not too oily and would do well with a nice bowl of rice.

Signature dishes:
1) Trio Combination of Chef's Signature Squid
-A platter of grilled, bbq and stirred fried, three different style used. Nice starter to munch on, while waiting for the main seafood dishes.

2) Red House Signature Chili Crab

-Nice thick gravy on fresh and meaty crabs, which is a sweeter, more tomato / not over spicy. No worries to those who are trying it for the first time, pairing it with a nice plate of man tou… yums 

3) Black Pepper Crab
-This is by far, the spiciest I’ve ever had, almost teared. But you’ll get used to it after a while. If you like it spicy, definitely a must try! There’s a White Pepper Crab dish, if you are up for it.

4) Creamy Custard Prawns

- fresh prawns, covered in a nice thick layer of creamy sweet custard and finger licking tasty. Although i was wondering if adding curry leaves would enhance its taste.

5) Spicy Seafood Combination

-felt more of a thai styled curry, a nice mixed of seafood (prawns, fish, squid, scallop), goes well with the man tou we were having or a bowl of rice.

6) Sauteed Baby Kailan with Minced Garlic
-glad to munch on this after so much seafood, the baby kalian were sautéed lightly with garlic, adding fragrance and very crunchy.

Dessert:
1) Yam Paste with Corn

- I asked if I could try this and I would say, after that much seafood, it’s felt good to be able to have some dessert to end the meal. The usual yam paste is slightly chunky and mixed with sweet potato but Red House’s is a nice creamy yam paste with bits of corn, that adds on a natural sweetness and not too jelak. A nice mix (yam & corn), definitely a must try, for dessert lovers.

My favorites and will be back for:
- Chili Crab Pau
- Steamed Pork Rib with Yam
- Creamy Custard Prawns
- Spicy Seafood Combination
- Yam Paste with Corn

A nice place to arrange for family gathering / dinner or small corporate gathering (there were a few that day)... and you can walk off the meal by the river

Being an OpenRicer has its perks, I got the chance to try out the new dim sum menu and their signature seafood creations at Red House.

From their dim sum menu, we were presented with
1) Chilli Crab Pau
2) Steamed Pork Ribs with Yam
3) Char Siew Pastry.

Some of you might have tried the
Chilli Crab Steamed Dumplings from Din Tai Fung but let me assure you that the Chilli Crab Pau here is out-of-the-world.
The chilli crab filling oozes out the moment you take a bite, the pau's exterior was soft and the thickness was just nice. The combination of chilli crab and pau is definitely awesome, perfect for lazy bones like me who wants to eat chilli crab but refuses to get their hands dirty.

The
Char Siew Pastry is a favourite of mine too. Some confectioneries do this dish with a thick pastry. Red House's version is just nice, not too thick but still crispy enough to put a smile on my face.

The dinner menu we tried was
Trio Combination of Chef's Signature Squid,
Chilli Crab,
Black Pepper Crab,
Creamy Custard Prawn,
Spicy Seafood Combination and
Baby Kai Lan in minced garlic.

The 2 crab dishes were the highlights of the meal. I enjoyed the Chilli Crab a lot because the sauce was tangy. The spiciness was not too overpowering, perfect for those who are a little daunted by chilli. The Black Pepper Crab was juicy and so spicy that it had me scrambling for water.

The dark horse was definitely the Creamy Custard Prawn. I would suggest that you eat it like that, WITHOUT de-shelling it, The essence of the sauce is on the shell itself, trust me on this. Everyone at the table were silent when we were devouring this dish, I like the taste of the yolk in the cream sauce and the freshness of the prawns was a major delight.

Red House Seafood is a family run restaurant and their dim sum are freshly hand made by their chefs everyday. It is available throughout the day but fantastic food come in limited quantities so do not be disappointed if you come by in the evening and there isn't any Chilli Crab Pau left!

The dishes may be a little pricey but for the quality, it is worth it.
I am sure it will be a good location for family gatherings or corporate functions.

Ladies and Gentleman, do allow me to give an introduction of the Red House Seafood Restaurant.

Red House Seafood Restaurant is one of the oldest seafood restaurants since 1976. From mid August 2010, they introduced a new selection of handmade dim sum at its Quayside outlet. The restaurant is available daily for lunch and evening bites at the bar and also delicious seafood selections.

On the first visit to the restaurant, I tried their handmade dim sum and a few other seafood dishes.

Dim Sum Tried and comments:
- Chili crab bun

This is a very interesting dish and also tribute to the chef for his effort! From what I learnt, the chef first prepare the chili crab dish then went on to "de-shelled" it to get the crab meat before the gravy filling it up in a bun with the crabmeat and the gravy. YES, alot of effort indeed. Thanks to the chef, we get to enjoy the bun together with the gravy in a convenient way.

- Steamed pork Ribs with Yam
A special way of preparing the dish. Usually, steamed pork ribs are served without yam. i like this dish very much as the sweetness of the yam is absorbed into the pork ribs and delivered a very special unique taste. Not very oily, suitable for those who like it not so salty.

- Baked flaky Char Siew Pastry
As the name suggests, flaky. Yes indeed. The char siew filling inside is not very sweet.

Other Seafood dishes:
- Trio Combination of Chef's Signature Squid
One would be able to try all three different type of way of preparing the squid. The three different type of cooking includes: bbq style, grilled and stir-fried with salted egg.
This dish is design in a way to suit different taste buds. You get to try three different ways of cooking.

- Red House Signature Chili Crab
This is Red House Restaurant's signature dish. Definitely a must try. But to those who can't take spicy stuffs, not to worry. The gravy is not very spicy in fact, it is a sweeter version of chilli crab. The dish is served with fried man tou or steamed man tou, dipped into the gravy of the chili sauce. It's fantastic!

- Black Pepper Crab
If you are not a fan of chili crab, you can choose black pepper crab instead. This dish is the opposite of the chili crab. It is really SPICY! But it's very shiok if you think you like the dish to be hot and spicy.

- Creamy Custard Prawns
Definitely a MUST TRY! This is the first time I get to enjoy such an invention. The prawns served are completely coated with the creamy sweet custard sauce. For me, ( I know it's weird) I ate the whole prawn down together with the shell. As the sauce completely is coated on to the prawn, you were then get to enjoy the effort of the chef in the making of the sauce. Indeed unique and die die must try!

- Spicy Seafood Combination
I learnt that this dish is cooked together with chili and also lemon grass. So the sauce have the tom yum taste and can be dipped with man tou as well. This dish has a number of different seafood in it. They include prawns, fish, squid etc. Very special way of preparing the dish as this is the first time i come across this dish.

- Sauteed Baby Kailan with Minced Garlic
After so much delicious seafood, just to not let myself feel so guilty. We need some vegetables to balance out. The vegetables are crispy and the sauce is not too salty. Very light and healthy.

Overall, the trip down is worth it! The service is excellent and because the restaurant is very spacious, we wont feel hot while we are enjoying our spicy black pepper crab and chili crab. Came across a few unique dishes.

For those who like to visit the place for lunch, if you think its too heavy to eat seafood during lunch time hour before meetings, not to worry. The restaurants do served dim sum during lunch hour as well as dinner.

This was my first visit to the Red house, during the dinner hour along with other Open Ricer for a complimentary food tasting session. Located along the Singapore riverside of Robertson Quay, I must admit I'm pretty impressed by it's classy decoration.

Unlike many of the other seafood establishments, I was surprised that Red house actually offers Dim Sum in the menu all day.

Had a quick glance at the menu and I was very excited as there is long list of food lining up.

We had 3 different Dim Sum on today's menu as starters:

1) Steamed Chili Crab Pau - $8.00 (Basket of 3)
2) Steamed Prob Ribs with Yam - $4.00 (Per serving)
3) Baked flaky Char Siew Pastry - $3.80 (Serving of 3)

Steamed Chili Crab Pau

"Whole Sri Lanka Crabs are cooked with their Chili crab sauce before de-shelled and stuffing the essence into their handmade buns for steaming"

An exquisite dish which is exclusive to Red house.
It look like any ordinary 'pau' that you'll have in an Dim Sum restaurant, but you'll be surprised with the generous chili crab filling on your first bite!

It was my first time having a Chili crab pau, and to be honest, I’ve never imagined that Chili crab could actually be used as the filling for pau.
A very different experience from dipping your regular 'mantous' into Chili crab gravy.

$8 for a serving of 3 - Its worth it, considering you'll get the enjoy the best of chili crabs without dirtying your hands!

Steamed Pork Ribs with Yam

The pork ribs were steamed together yam along with black beans & seasoning. The ribs was not overcook and I am absolutely impressed by its tender and springy texture. Yam were added to neutralize the 'jelat' feeling and overall.

A must try dish!

Baked flaky Char Siew Pastry

The crust was indeed flaky as suggested by its name and it's char siew filling was quite generous. It taste quite normal to me but I would rate it above average. It'll be an ideal alternates for char siew pau if you are craving for some not-so-filling char siew dishes.

After the series of Dim Sum starters, here comes the Main Dishes - Seafood!

The line up list

1) Trio Combination of Chef's Signature Squid ($50/$28 per serving)
2) Red House Signature Chili Crab ($4 /100g)
3) Black Pepper Crab ( $4 /100g)
4) Creamy Custard Pawns ($7/100g)
5) Spicy Seafood Combination ($48/$36/$24 per serving)
6) Sauteed Baby Kailan with Minced Garlic. ($20/$15/$10)

Let me start with the Trio Combination of Chef's Signature Squid .

The platter which features 3 different kind of squid in different style: Barbecue, Deep Fried with Salted egg Yolk, Fried baby squid.

The barbecued squid was fresh and the BBQ sauce was not overwhelming. In fact the BBQ flavor brings out freshness of the squid at its very best, and the fried baby squid was a very tasty morsel.

Next, we had the Creamy Custard Prawns.
At $7/100g, you might feel its a little pricey, but it was really worth every cents. The cream custard does not overwhelm the natural taste of the prawns, instead it pairs of well and enhanced it to a higher level!
Custard gives people an impression of being 'Jelat', but not in this case. The proportion was just right between the custard and prawns.

The quality of the prawn is very fresh, judging by the speed for those who peeled the shell, you know it. You, you can even eat it as a whole without peeling to savor the best of this combination – this was one of the highlight of the tasting session.

As I was busying savoring every bits of the custard cream prawns, their signature Chili Crabs and Black pepper Crabs was served.

Time to get our hand soiled with the crabs gravy!

These two crab dishes delivered to my expectation - especially the Chili crab, it was one of the most memorable Chili crab I had.
The gravy is something which I am very particular when it comes to Chili crab.
It must be thick yet not over starched, spiciness must to be a right degree.
Red house's signature Chili crabs fit in the bill perfectly.

The crabs was not overcooked and right in serving size for all of us.
Not to mentioned, the gravy was something really enjoyable with steamed or fried mantou.

This is the real Chili crab experience.

Perhaps I was overwhelm by the awesomeness of the Chili Crab earlier on, the black pepper crab seem a little dull to me. Nevertheless I enjoyed the heady aroma and teasing taste of the black pepper infusing on the sweetness of the crab flesh.

Chili Crab is a must try dish here.

Alongside the duo crab dishes, the Spicy Seafood Combination was quietly served as we are indulging with our crab dishes.
It consist of various seafood such as prawns, squid, scallop and etc... wrapped up in 'peranakan' style. The characteristic of these combination didnt go too well for me. I dont know about other but I feel this dish doesn't brings out the best of the various seafood used.

Last but not least, we had the Kai Lan in minced garlic.
Delightfully light dish which was well executed.
The kai lan was crunchy, sweet with a dash of the minced garlic fragrant.
An excellent light dish to sum up the entire tasting session.

-

Overall, the experience was pleasant.
The service throughout was excellent as the waitress were really attentive to customer's needs. (Not just us, but also to other as what I've observed,)

It a place I'd definitely return for seafood selection (especially the chili crabs!)
