Curry Puffs

Located like 2 minutes walk away from Les Patissierie is this AMK Curry Puff, dubbed as the original "Tip Top" Curry Puff, it is indeed true! It definitely tastes like the original Tip Top curry puff that I remembered from my younger days. You can watch the staff sitting there and effortlessly hand making each curry puff, a truly respectable trait! Look at the huge pots of potatoes, ready to be cooked in the curry paste! It is crazy to think of the number of curry puffs, this stall churns out on a daily basis.A fresh tray of curry puffs just taken out of the deep fryer. The curry puff tasted very good, it was still crispy and it still had a delightful crunch to it, even though I had eaten 2 hours later! It was no longer hot, but the insides was still slightly warm. The curry puff wasn't too spicy, as I normally don't like spicy foods. The spice level in this curry puff was acceptable for me to enjoy it.I bought a bunch more for my colleagues to enjoy and everyone loved it.A great choice for a snack for big groups, at just $1.40 each, and they still stay crispy after hours! continue reading

It was by chance when we crossed path with this particular curry puff stall. The banner displayed right outside the coffee shop caught my attention. It stated, 'Original AMK Curry Puff'. My curiosity prompted me to find out. I was greeted by the friendly Auntie. I asked her, 'This stall used to be from Ang Mo Kio?' She nodded her head. I asked further. 'I stay in Ang Mo Kio for decade long but never did come across a stall by the name of AMK Curry Puff.'Auntie said, 'Yeah. We used to be at Ang Mo Kio.'I asked again, 'Which part of Ang Mo Kio?'She said, 'We used to be Tip Top Curry Puff.'My immediate reaction was 'OH!'I was so taken aback. I was told by friends that the standard of Tip Top Curry Puff has dropped quite a bit these days. I never did suspect that would be the reason of their drop in standard.Auntie said, 'Couldn't you tell the difference when you eat it now? The taste is no longer the same.'Honestly, i did not quite realise. I have not been patronising as much after they increased their price to $1.30 for a piece of curry puff quite a while ago.The Uncle said, 'The business was not as good so we decided to sell away the brand name and shop.'I remember they used to sell more than 2,000 curry puffs per day and that landed the elderly Uncle in the limelight. He was jailed for tax evasion for 2 weeks and fined for a massive sum of money. I guess their business is not as good as before. Only a handful of curry puffs were on the display on that day. First mouthful. It is still that comforting taste i am familiar with. Their curry puffs are a part of my growing up memories. My Grandpa used to buy them for me when i was a kid. I used to buy them for myself and Grandpa later. It is rather moist with an aromatic curry taste and full of ingredients like cubes of potatoes and bits of chicken together with a slice of hard boiled egg. And, the crust was rather flaky with a slight buttery taste and fried well to give it the rather crispy texture, not too oily though. Auntie said, 'Next time, when want to eat curry puff, remember to come back here!'It seemed the Auntie and Uncle started this stall from scratch. No sight of an assistant but just both of them on that day. The Auntie was sitting down, hand making the curry puffs one by one and the Uncle was right behind, preparing the filling. It is still one of the better Curry Puffs that i ever tasted. As what the Auntie advised, i will go back there when i am craving for good curry puffs, again. continue reading

Guess what had caught my attention as I walked pass Super 28 Coffeeshop? Of course not the big signature that writes "Curry Puff - $1.30" but the old employees who are diligently wrapping and "playing" with the curry puff dough on the table, with half body hidden behind those stacks of flour. These puffs are absolutely hand-made without the help of any machine. The curry puff comes with a golden brown crispy puff and was served pipping hot. The thickness was of just the right size allowing it to hold the fillings without them exploding out.As I bite off the edge of the puff, I saw the following and told myself "There it is! The taste definitely wont go wrong with this yummy look!". The curry fillings has indeed given a perfect marriage between the spices, chicken, eggs and potatoes! Not too spicy and oily. The next time if you do pass by Toa Payoh Central, do take an opportunity to leave your footprints in AMK Curry Puff. I bet you wont stop by just one puff! continue reading
