A Sapphire in the Heart of CBD
2011-12-21
What’s your New Year’s resolution for 2012? If it’s eating more Italian food, then you’re in luck for there’s a new Italian Restaurant which recently opened in the heart of the central business district. Zaffiro, which means sapphire in Italy, is not your usual restaurant which only serves average dishes. Behind its kitchen is the Chef Patron Giuliano Dacasto, who worked at exclusive restaurants in Italy and London before landing on the Singapore shores (lucky us!). After heading the Il Lido and Forlino, he has moved on to helm the mélange of contemporary Italian fare at Zaffiro.
Granchio Reale dell'Alaska servito con Asparagi e Zucchine ($26)
With so many accolades under his belt, you can be sure that Chef Giuliano won’t disappoint. In fact, all the dishes that come out of his kitchen are just perfect from the way it is presented down to the taste of the food. One example is his appetiser of Alaska King Crab with asparagus, zucchini, and sweet chili ($28++) which is just to pretty to eat. As for the taste the fishy taste of the crab was toned down the right way with the asparagus and zucchini. The sweet chili was just enough to give this a kick and make it a memorable one. Another delicious appetiser is the Roasted Greenland Scallops in cocoa butter with salsify and Franciorta wine sauce. The scallop is perfectly cooked so it’s very soft and tasty, plus the sauce complemented it very well.
Agnolotti di Stinco di Vitello con Cavolo Verza e Tartufo Stagionale ($32)
Another notable mention is their signature favourite: the Veal Shank Ravioli with savoy cabbage and truffle. What makes this extra special are the thin slices of the prized truffle which complements the overall look and taste.
Roasted Canadian Black Cod
As for the signatures, they have a wide selection which ranges from pastas, risottos, fish mains, and of course meat! If you love your meat, opt for their Roasted Suckling Pig ($54). This is served with squashed celeriac, turnip, shallot, and mirto sauce. As for the fish, you can order their Roasted Canadian Black Cod ($44). For the dessert, as the waiter what he would recommend and he would easily tell you it’s the Traditional Rum Baba Sponge Cake ($16). Be prepared for its strong rum taste which just goes well with the soft cake. No doubt these dishes are just stellar. However, the portioning is quite small, yet they have made the price quite reasonable. If you’re in the mood for some Italian fare for 2012, we recommend that you visit Zaffiro! -- Address: 8 Marina View,#01-01, Asia Square Tower 1, Singapore Tel.
