Every foodie might dream of visiting Melbourne to experience first-hand its eclectic dining scene. But if you’re strapped for cash, you can try its culinary offerings right here in Singapore. Within the food hub of Far East Square lies Intrepid Gastro Bar – a Melbourne-inspired eatery which serves hearty and authentic Melbourne cuisine. Owners Rommel and Michelle, who grew up Down Under, wanted to showcase the diverse Australian cuisine. With the help of Chef Iskander Latiff, winner of Channel News Asia’s The Perfect Meal, they have come up with a menu which highlights exotic dishes as well as hearty items they grew up loving.

Kangaroo sliders, a Melbourne specialty

For those who want to be adventurous with food, you can try the Kangaroo Sliders ($18.50+) – an Australian delicacy made with chopped kangaroo meat and parma ham, drizzled with truffle aioli and onion chilli relish; served with buns and potato chips on the side. Eating this exotic meat is nothing to be scared of for it just tastes like lamb, meaty which packs a strong flavour. Another dish worth mentioning is the Tandoor-style Crocs Skewer ($12+) served with lemon for that added zest. Small Plates and Big Plates

Crab Cake & Chopped Bacon on Apple Slaw

Don’t be scared to visit Intrepid for there are also other items which the not-so-adventurous people can order. Some of the bestsellers are the Crab Cake & Chopped Bacon on Apple Slaw ($10+) – made extra special with their in-house smoked bacon; Crispy Pork Belly ($8+) – thick and juicy pork served with carrots; and the Intrepid Tapas Sampler ($28+) - one full plate of 5 tapas samplers. It’s served with one pint of ice-cold beer, which is true to how the Australians enjoy their meals.

Sharing is also encouraged at Intrepid Gastro Bar; so communal platters are a big part of the menu. For that ultimate indulgence, have the Aussie Angus Rib Eye ($120+) – a feast of 1.2kg bone-in cut of 200-day aged Australian Angus. Have it as it is or enhance the taste with Dijon mustard or béarnaise sauce. Served on the side are grilled corn salsa and vegetables. If the big fat steak isn’t enough, order the Hog’s Platter ($88+) which is a combination of crackled pork belly skin, grilled pork loin, baked pork trotter, and smoked sausages. The amount of meat in this platter is more than enough for meat lovers to have a filling meal. Beers and Other Beverages

This refreshing drink is like summer in a jug

Every Aussie meal wouldn’t really be complete without beer…and the owners of Intrepid Gastro Bar kept that in mind when they were planning the whole concept. As such, you can find a bar inside the restaurant which serves an impressive line-up of craft beers and draughts from Australia. For a sweet and refreshing taste, the bartender can concoct the Summer Beer Sangria ($35+) using Great White beer and lychee. Other choices on the menu are the Feral Hop Hog ($14.90), Pure Blonde, and Kiwi Great White (both at $16+ each). Mix and match these drinks with the food items and have a joyous dining experience at Intrepid Gastro Bar. Best part about the pork belly is it’s not that oily and is really fragrant.
