The spacious interior of Jade Garden
The first thing I thought of when I entered Jade Garden was a setting for a wedding reception. For some weird reason, the high ceilings, brightly lit room, and fancy utensils on the round tables reminded me of a scene from a movie wherein the bride and groom are about to make a toast to a good life ahead.
Imagination aside, the thing that brought me to this Cantonese restaurant at Boon Lay was really to sample their offerings. Being in business for about three months only, I wondered what dishes could Jade Garden offer which would set them apart from all other Cantonese restaurants in Singapore. What would make you go all the way to this district to eat at this restaurant?
I was about to find out as I was served with their Siew Mai and their Deep-Fried Yam Stuffed with Minced Chicken. The first dish was very soft and chewy. Instead of the usual pork ingredient, it was made of chicken. Healthy! The second dish was alright. It was typically crispy on the outside and meaty on the inside.

Chef's Combination Platter, $12
Moving on to the other courses, I then had the Chef’s Combination Platter, but the one that stood out for me was the Wasabi Prawn. I liked the crispiness of the prawn complemented by the Wasabi’s mild spiciness enough to tickle the palate.

Cod Fish Baked with Miso and Sauteed Edamame, $16
After the appetizers came the main courses. Take note, it was not just 1 but 4: the Braised Shark’s Fin with Crabmeat and Dried Scallop in Pumpkin Soup, Braised Sliced Abalone, Dried Scallop and Vegetables in Tan Jia Sauce, Cod Fish Baked with Miso and Sauteed Edamame, and the Fresh Crab Claw with Japanese Somen. All were quite good, but the one dish that really stood out for me was the Cod fish. It was just so soft that it seemed to crumble on your every bite. It was also covered with this sweet sauce that just made this dish even better. However, I found the Japanese Somen a little bit salty for my taste.
I ended my meal with the Combination Dessert Platter, which was impressively served in this large big bowl with ice. I definitely enjoyed eating the fruits such as watermelon and mangoes because they were very fresh and sweet. That's how I like my fruits!
