I was invited to a food tasting event organised by Open Rice last thursday. I was there early so had some time to admire the decor. I like the entire feel of the place: Warm and cosy, nice place for a gathering. There is even a live band.This place was originally (and now still is) used for event to host weddings and the restaurant also does food catering.I will go into the food since this is the main aim of the review. I will go into the food since this is the main aim of the review. The serving given for the food tasting was pretty generous and by the end of the event, I was really full! The only thing, the lighting for food photography was challenging due to the blue and red lightings, which was to create a romantic mood.

First served were the drinks. We were given three to sample: Nojito ($5.50) (non-alcoholic version), Iced Thai Milk Tea ($4) and Charisma Lemon Tea ($3.80), the recommended drinks in the eatery. I only managed to sample the Iced Thai Milk Tea and Lemon Tea, which were both refreshing and not too sweet. But felt the brew a bit on the weak side, again, I am an avid caffeine consumer.

The Portobello was a nice starter as I loved mushrooms. The side salad with strawberry dressing (which is common for all the dishes with side salad) was refreshing. The accompanying spicy soya sauce looks harmless, but is pretty spicy. Which is great for me as I love spicy food.

The Fried Calamari was a tad bit too blend and dry, if not for the Arrablatta sauce.

We got to sample two distinctly different pasta dishes, the Bandung and Tom Yum Pasta. I like how both were flavoured to suit the local taste. I preferredthe Bandung pasta I normally prefer tomato based pasta sauce and I super love the poached egg in it. The Tom Yum pasta tasted not bad too.

The other main that was served, Ocean D'Venue (Fish and chips) paled in comparison to the pasta, though I liked the garlic rice. It was not bad, but not fantastic either.

My favourite dish for the evening was the Flaming Wings, similar to the Korean fried chicken wings, but more shiok version. It was really spicy, but I really like spicy food, so it was really great for me. The chicken wing is well-seasoned and nicely fried too. Warning: Have to gulp down lots of the lemon tea and for those who do not take spicy food should avoid this.

Last but not least, the desserts were served, Charisma Chocolate Fondue, Waffles and Chocolate Overload (chocolate milkshake). Frankly, I felt the winning point of this place is not the desserts, though I felt the waffles was really pretty and a lot of effort done for the deco. The Chocolate Overload, well, think more suitable for the kids with the coloured rice and biscuits. The milkshake, after mixing with the whipped cream, was a bit too sweet, "overload" as the name implies.

The only dish I didn't sample fully was the Briyani Lamb Shank, another Chef's recommendation, so it is not fair for me to review it, but the briyani was nice with the curry.

The winning point of this place is the price which I felt was quite reasonable and portions were generous. Great care and effort was done for the menu and most of the sides and mains were not bad. Nice place to gather with friends as the ambience is nice.

Charisma started out as a company offering malay bridal service 10 years ago. In recent years, it has expanded to makeup services, followed by catering and lastly a restaurant called Charisma D' Venue in Feb 2013. The restaurant is located at Joo Chiat Place, which is quite near to Geylang Serai neighbourhood, known as the heart of the Malay community here in Singapore. Charisma D' Venue is semi-fine dining restaurant which offers Halal western and local food, prepared by its in house Chef Fauzi

With its grand decoration of the place and the wedding stage for the bride and groom, the restaurant is also often used as a wedding venue for malay wedding. During the fasting months, the restaurant offers Ramadhan buffet with dishes changing regularly. Currently for the month of March, the restaurant is having performances on Sunday night at $35 per ticket which includes a complimentary drink. The restaurant is quite big, with both indoor and outdoor dine in area.

With the ground floor as the restaurant, the second floor is currently being used for bridal service.

Menu was a big pinkish booklet with lots of delicious looking pictures of food in it.

Iced Thai Milk Tea ($4)
It was made with brewed tea. However I felt the drink was quite watered down as I could not taste the tea in it.

Charisma Lemon Tea ($3.80)
Out of the 3 drinks, I felt that this had the strongest taste. Strong tea taste and lemony. It was made with brewed tea.

It was made with freshly squeezed juice upon order. A refreshing soda drink with a minty taste, although I wished for a stronger lime taste.

Portobello ($7.90)
Chef Recommendation
Crispy battered mushroom accompanied with sweet and spicy soya sauce.
It looked like another battered mushroom dish, but it was one of the best dishes of the meal. Dipped the simple battered mushroom in the dark sauce, the taste simply exploded in the mouth. It was juicy, savoury, sweet and spicy, all at once.

Fried Calamari ($8.90)
Crispy battered squid ring with Arrabiatta sauce.
The spicy tomato based sauce went quite well with the battered calamari.

Flaming Wings ($7.90)
Mouthwatering Crispy fried chicken wings with Charisma secret ingredient sauce! For the wild hearted!
It was the restaurant's version of korean style fried chicken but in a more spicy way. Finger licking good.

Tom Yum Pasta ($10.90)
Sauteed linguine pasta in a creamy seafood tomyum sauce.
It was also known as Ong Bak Pasta. One of the best dishes of the meal. The pasta was well coated with the creamy spicy sauce, although I felt that the sauce reminded me more o green curry than tomyum as it was not sour enough.

Bandung Pasta ($9.90)
Chef Recommendation
Sauteed linguine pasta, minced meat and prawns in a spicy tomato sauce topped with poached eggs.
Although it looked quite spicy and oily, it was one of the best dishes of the meal. There was sweet and spicy flavours in the dish.

Briyani Lamb Shank ($19.90)
Chef Recommendation
Braised lamb shank in Briyani sauce served with Mango chutney, flavoured Basmati rice and Dalcha.
The lamb was quite tender without much gamey taste. The vegetables in the dalcha was soft and well flavoured.

Ocean D'Venue ($10.90)
Battered tempura fish, coleslaw, fries, Garlic rice with a side of Arrabbiata sauce and Mayonnaise sauce.
As there was only one serving of this dish, I only managed to eat some crumbles of the battered fish, as most of the fish was taken by the other side of the table. Based on what I had, I could only remark that the fish was quite mushy, which was quite disappointing. The coleslaw was interestingly coated with a pinkish sauce.

Charisma Chocolate Fondue ($9.90)
Chef Recommendation
Chocolate Fondue served with assorted seasonal fruits and Marshmallow.
The chocolate fondue was served quite hot but not quite thick to coat the fruit. We were served strawberries, grapes, rock melon cubes, pineapple cubes and mango cubes. I felt that mango cubes was a bad choice here as it was cut too small and quite difficult to coat with. The rock melon was also too juicy to be coated with.

Waffles ($9.90)
Vanilla belgian waffles with fresh strawberries, sliced bananas, chocolate sauce, caramel sauce and topped with choice of ice cream.
The dish was prettily presented like a piece of art. However I disappointed in the texture of the waffle was not the crispy, airy and fluffy type, nor was it the eggy and sponge type.

Chocolate Overload MilkShake ($6.50)
The chocolate milkshake was topped with whipped cream, chocolate sauce, chopped nut, wafer roll, chocolate wafer bar, marshmallows and chocolate coated pretzel sticks. It looked quite huge and its just $6.50. What a steal! Way cheaper than the overpriced overflowing milkshakes sold in other cafes. However the milkshake did not taste as chocolaty as I would prefer. But for this price, I have no complain.
Overall there was both hits and misses in the food, although the pasta dishes were really very delicious and reasonable priced here. The prices of the dishes here were very attractive. If you are driving, there is a public car park area just behind the bus stop opposite the restaurant. Only thing that may keep me from coming here often is that there is only one bus service which is bus service number 33 stopping at the bus stop opposite the restaurant.
