Before you eat the bun, you can create a small hole in the bun first, then drink the soup. After that, you can enjoy the steamed bun with the filling. The skin of the bun is quite thin too. I love their Golden fried rice too. It is topped with lots of floss as you can see from the photo itself. The rice is fried till fragrant. Their wasabi prawns is good. The prawns are very springy and the wasabi sauce is fantastic. Its not overpowering. I love their osmanthus flower sticky cake. It has the fragrance of the flowers and taste good when you eat it cold. Try out their golden pumpkin cake. Its good too! Overall, I like the food over there. Highly recommended for their steamed buns & dim sum.

Starting off with the drunken chicken, it was so good, the meat was so tender, the gravy was very tasty and fragrant. The jelly fish with spicy vinegar tasted very unique, I was not really a fan of jellyfish but this was pretty good, it was kind of sourish and the jellyfish was crunchy and chewy. The xiao long bao was excellent, the filling and soup was kind of sweetish because of the crab meat. The salted vegetable soup went really well with the rice, it had a fusion of flavours from salty to sourish to sweetish. It was really good. The best of all with the shanghai fried rice with chicken chop. The fried rice was so fragrant, I love the eggy taste. It went so well with the chicken chop, the chicken chop was very crispy and the meat was very tender and juicy. A filling meal it was.

However, there was once I ordered the wrong item and I requested for a change. Initially they were quite reluctant to do so but they did eventually as the manager intervene. So I have the chance to try the Shanghainese vegetable rice, and spicy rice.

This was one of the recommended dish. A little sour due to the vinegar. Delicious.

This fried chicken was just an ordinary cutlet.
I couldn't remember how much was the bill but it should be more than $50. We were given a $0.20 rebate card for our next visit.

The interior was rather cramp, evidently with the restaurant trying to squeeze as many tables as possible in the relatively small room, resulting in a less than comfortable boxy looking dining area. I could easily overhear the adjourning table's conversation, not that I wanted to though. I guess that gives you an idea how close the tables were.

Have you ever tried pork rib noodles that were sweet I for one, have not. Thats why Nanxiang's rendition came as quite a surprise (or was it shock). The broth was sweet, not the MSG kind of sweet but literally sugar sweet. The pork ribs were sweet as well, which was rather weird, considering that I had expected the entire dish to be salty. The noodles were rather springy though and appeared to be the only thing that was "normal". Sorry but sweet broth and pork ribs just don't cut it for me.

For $8.50, I had expected better. The Yang Zhou Fried Rice was a joke and I'm not kidding. Served in a rounded symmetrical form, the rice looked like it had been pre-prepared and scooped from a container using a bowl (I'm just guessing). The de facto Char Siew was replaced by luncheon meat which is a poor substitute in my humble opinion. The rice lacked taste and came across as rather bland. Probably the only thing that I liked about this dish was the homogeneity of colours.

The Fried Prawns with Salted Egg came piping hot, with the gravy still bubbling and frothing. The relatively fresh prawns were of average size and overall tasted decent with the gravy buttery and a little coarse, probably due to the bits of egg yolk. However, this dish is best eaten hot as the gravy tends to harden as it cools and things get really gross from there.

The baked mini puffs looked like your normal curry puff, but break it open to find pork, mushroom and bamboo. Supposedly of course. Truth is, I only found pathetic bits of mushroom in it with what seemed to be scrap morsels of minced meat. It was like eating the pastry more than anything else. Not that it tasted good by the way.

Steamed Soup Bun with Crab Roe and Pork Filling - Purportedly Nanxiang's signature dish - the Xiao Long Bao (XLB). I honestly wasn't the least bit impressed. The skin was way too thick and I had to literally tear it apart before I could take a snapshot of the filling. And there is something about the QC of their XLB. Some had loads of fluids contained within, some had minimal. Talk about consistency.

I have never tried Pan Fried Pumpkin Cake before and I don't think I ever want to try it again, at least not at Nanxiang. The cake was soaking in oil but tasted decent though, a little sweet and crispy on the outside.

$59 for such mediocre quality food is plain absurd. The only redeeming factor was the reasonably good service but I don't think thats enough to make me go back.

As we flipped through the menu thoroughly, our conclusion is that rice is more worth it to order hence my friend and i ordered the golden fried rice - the plate that has the floss meats on top .

and subsequently , another of my friend ordered the chicken cultet fried rice and another one ordered the fried noodles..

our conclusion is that only the GOLDEN FRIE
D RICE is recommended, while the noodles is in a very small portion and quite oily too...

whereas, for the chicken cutlet fried rice, only the chicken cutlet is nice. the rice don't worth $8 ...since is quite normal in taste.

The food were good but the service we received was more than we desire.

The Poach Chicken Drum was not cut properly and my bf asked for a table knife, he's a Jap and the English accent is not S'porean style but surely the China waitress should be able to understand him.Instead of being helpful, she showed her impatient face and took our dish back to the kitchen to cut the chicken drum in a unprofessional manner.

I don't know what is your exact closing time but at 9.15pm, the staff starts to clear away our chilli and sauces. I can clearly heard my neighbour complaining as well. The staff also started to sweep the floor while tables of customer are still dinning away.

This type of service needs improvement especially they are located in Bugis Junction where the number of tourist is high.

FOOD
Their Spring roll carb roe is commentable, cripsy and full of roe.Vale for $$.
Wasabi Prawn must try too, big juicy prawn with a mild wasabi taste to wet your appeitie.

Happy National Day, China!

So how apt for me to do a post about one of China's greatest inventions. The dumpling. Although Nanxiang seems to have done the literal translation of 包 which is bun. I guess they do buns too.

I try and avoid Chinese food when I visit Singapore since I always feel that I can get much better in Hong Kong, where I live, and for greater value too. I also try to avoid Bugis Junction since the parking is horrendous. So on this very odd occasion when the 2 no-nos met, Mom and I found ourselves at Nanxiang.

It's a fairly comfortable place to eat at - bright (read stark white and made even brighter with natural lighting in the day). First time - so we limit our order to "chef favorites".

To start, we got the Homemade Tofu. It was surprisingly very firm - almost bouncy - from the abundance of meat and seafood infused into the tofu. So it was really a slab of meat/seafood roll infused with tofu. Served with a sweet chili dip, it was pretty tasty - most deep-fried things are. Personally, I would have preferred the presence of more tofu and a softer texture though.

The Bean Sauce Minced Pork Noodle (炸酱面) was mediocre if you have had the same in Beijing. This is a less oily version but while the mince was salty enough to give the noodles a little bit of lift, it was a pretty flat taste. Hardly a hint of anything else to allow the eater to think about what else went in to make the sauce. The noodles were borderline firm enough, and the julienned cucumbers were a tad soggy even if chilled.

The stir-fried string beans (干煸四季豆)were pretty addictive though. Well fried to still retain a good juicy crunch, even if this ain't the most healthy way to eat vegetables, it sure is tasty. There was just enough minced pork to give the beans a salty and smoky flavor, they did not overpower. Would be nice with steamed rice but not too salty to have on its own.

Our finale was the quintessential reason for this place's existence. The Crab Roe and Pork Filling Steamed Bun (蟹黄小笼) is 2 prices up on the traditional pork only but what the heck, the other being the crab meat and pork filling. Note the little wooden sign in the bamboo basket which says crab roe in Chinese - so there is no confusion in delivery. The skin was thin enough for the most part, but I had to spit out the part where they pinch it at the top of the bun to make the ripples down the sides of the bun. It was far too thick and had been dried out for some reason so it tasted crusty. The filling had a little more pork bite than the traditional which I tend to like, since it's not so fatty, but the roe was probably not the best kind as it did little to add any hint of the sea at all.

Overall verdict: if you happen to be stuck in the area, it's ok to grab a quick one here. There are definitely noticeable differences in standards from its home in Shanghai, and I think you can probably get better ones, even in Singapore. Besides, the price point at Nanxiang isn't low enough for that to even be a consideration.

They have 2 main high tea sets, which you can further add on items too.I opted for the most basic one to taste their food. They don't look very appealing but taste was average. It is actually quite value for money as you get really full at the end of the set. If you are a small eater, I would suggest 3 person to share 2 sets. You can always add on if you feel that is not enough.
