In search for good food, we decided to visit Toa Payoh, one of the heartland districts in Singapore. The name Toa Payoh suggested that it was previously a large swamp. With New Towns' development by the government, it was transformed into Singapore's Housing Development Board's 2nd satellite town. The housing estate area is pretty much self-contained, with a town centre serving the needs of the residents.I must say I was pretty overwhelmed when I first arrived at Toa Payoh Central, which was a bustling 'hotspot' with lots of commuters. With maps located at the bus terminal, it was not too difficult to navigate our way around in search of good food! One tip though, do try and avoid walking pass the area outside the foyer of Toa Payoh Central (In front of McDonald's and Ya Kun) unless you do not mind being hassled by promoters, for Sizzler restaurant especially.(+) Tenderly braised duck with a very savory gravy sauce that enhanced the taste.(+) Fragrant yam rice and it was well cooked, al-dente. (+) Braised tau pok was chewy and was oozing with juice, giving one a saucy mouthful.(+) The braised peanuts were soft but not overly cooked to become mashy.(+) With 3 types of chili on offer, each was spicy and provided a good accompaniment, especially the traditional Teochew chili sauce for braised duck, that has a tinge of lime to whet one's appetite!(-) The soup provided was too 'tasty' and overwhelming in terms of MSG unfortunately.(-) Rather small portions of braised peanuts, thin duck slice and braised tau pok for S$3.80/-Verdict: 7.5/10 繼續閱讀

Kway Chap here in this foodcourt is one of my favourite local dish. The broad rice noodles is very smooth and chewy. Really appreciate the generous portion of broad kway teow served to me which is really filling and satisfying. The braised pork belly is very chewy and juicy. The fried beancurd puffs are chewy and absorbed the nice sweet fragrant from the dark soya sauce used in cooking it. Must go along with their sambal chilli sauce which have generous amount of crispy ikan billis inside. The counter staffs are approachable and service is fast as well. The stall is clean and neat too. 繼續閱讀

Yu Kee has francise stalls everywhere in Singapore but this Toa Payoh koufu outlet impressed me on this occasion. Ordered a $4 kway chap with the mini kway teow type. My mixed set includes, eggs, braised pork, fish cake and big intestines. I would say what makes this yu kee stall different is the richly flavored sauce and soup taste. its just a little more than the usual franchise stalls i've tried, and i must say i liked it alot. Eating the nice kway tiao kia with the sauce is a perfect combination. Definitely prefer this version of the kway as it will not clump together if left for long. Also eating kway chap with the anchovies mixed belachan chilli is also a delight. 繼續閱讀

This stall sells braised duck rice, duck porridge, noodles and kuey chiap. The braised duck rice also comes in set where you have a plate of delicious yam rice, duck meat, braised egg and comes with a bowl of plain soup equally brown in colour. The kuey chiap is equally delicious as the pig's organs are fresh with no bad smell and served with kiam chye, big and small organs, tau pok,egg and braised meat. They have 2 types of chilli sauces, sambal chilli sauce for duck rice and the other for the kuey chiap. You may see the queue at this stall but you don't have to wait long for your food to be served as there's 3 people manning this stall. 繼續閱讀
