Queenstown Popiah! Does it ring the bell? If you have been to the demolished Margaret Drive Hawker Centre, upon spotting this stall, I bet you will have some flash back memories. It was a lazy Sunday afternoon that I decided to visit the place when almost half of the hawker stalls were closed and caught sight of this stall by chance. It was manned by an elderly couple and business seemed slow on such a day.I still miss the good days when popiah cost $1 each but nowadays Popiahs are mostly charged at a minimum rate of $1.30 just like what we have here in Yuhua Village Market & Food Centre. The fillings are classic, packed with sweet sauce, braised turnips, bean sprouts, eggs, crunchy bits and not forgetting the grated peanuts that give additional aroma to it.But those were the days where the stall owners had did their own popiah skins. Sadly, theirs was abit dry and the distinctive taste of the delicious turnips were forgotten here. It tasted far from what I remembered when I had the first taste of Famous Queenstown Popiah.http://www.umakemehungry.com/2014/03/queenstown-popiah.html 繼續閱讀

The stall is originated from the already demolished Margaret Drive Food Centre. It is supposed to be the same but not quite. The original stall owner decided to retire and his son has since taken over part of the business. The son has a stall at Commonwealth Crescent Food Centre making the popiah skins. The father decided to pass the other part of business to an old friend. This old friend used to run a braised duck rice and noodle stall in Margaret Drive Food Centre. As this old friend is catching up with age, he decided to close its braised duck rice and noodle stall as it required too much efforts in running the stall and he could no longer cope with it. This good friend is guided by the original owner to start this stall in this food centre and using the same name to continue the popiah business. The price has been raised to $1.30. I was there during the supposedly busy lunch time but the business of this stall seemed to be quite slow. I was the other customer right there. The stall was manned by the elderly uncle solely. The uncle was a little slow in assembling the ingredients, wrapping and cutting the popiah. I waited for less than 5 minutes to order and to get it. It was served placing on a disposable plate. Those plastic plates are for orders of 2 pieces and more. Though the skin is supposedly to be handmade but it turned out to be quite dry. The owner may not be doing a good job in keeping the skins well. The turnip filling tasted bland. The amount of beansprouts was not as generous as it used to be so it kinda compromised on its texture. It did not have a distinctive taste though there were other ingredients like boiled egg and grounded peanuts added. The chilli did not taste as good as before too. I followed the original stall when they first started in an old coffee shop then moved to the already demolished food centre. I was quite a fan for a decade long. Sadly, i am a fan no more after this particular experience. Though this is not a bad testing popiah but it just did not taste as good as it used to be of yesteryear. 繼續閱讀

It was tea break so we went for popiah treat...The skin is nice and thin, the turnip filling is tasty, and there’s just enough taugeh to give it some crunch...The proportions of garlic, sweet sauce and chilli are just right, and there’s also a very interesting crunchy topping that’s a little like fried breadcrumbs that you don’t get at many other popiah stalls...They don’t add the cursory kng chye (coriander/cilantro) that’s so damn common and irritating in so many popiah joints... 繼續閱讀

You may just want to settle for a simple lunch and popiah will just be the right choice for you on a hot busy afternoon. This stall popiah has the best taste of all the other popiah I have tried it before. Their homemade popiah skin goes very well with the other ingredients in the popiah, especially with the adding of their sweet sauce, garlic paste and chilli as well. The skin is so perfect that it melts in your mouth immediately once you eat it. You should try it. 繼續閱讀

The Skin is quite springy and the chillis is quite nice for me. However, the taste is not very fresh. I see the preparation of beansprout which has spots of black region - beansprout has put in opened for a long period of time or the beansprout bought from the stall may not be that fresh. The radish is overcooked cooked, making the radish too soaky to be eaten. 繼續閱讀
