Swee Choon have been a famous dim sum supper place and I just got to try it with my friends, not for supper but for dinner. We ordered both carrot cake and the fried mee sua (pancake?), I think the fried mee sua pancake was really nice and the carrot cake was very normal compared to it. Overall the variety of dimsum and many other dishes was quite alot and it was a nice meal. The price was also reasonable. But my friends and I over ordered so in the end we had a hard time finishing the food.

What is dim sum without custard bun? Just look at the flowing "lava" tells you it's good. FYI, the bun is left to cool for quite a while before we eat!

After settling the bill, we chatted for a while before leaving. I happily walked away from the table without realizing that my mobile phone is on the table. Luckily the staff standing near our table alerted me! Else, I would have to bid my mobile phone goodbye. Kuddos to the staff who alerted me on my mobile phone!

Anyway we ordered a good variety of items, some of which were our favourites from our last visit, such as the Sichuan Chilli Oil Wanton, Xiao Long Bao, Har Kow, and Salted Egg Yolk Custard Bun. Of course we also ordered some new items like the Egg and Meat Floss (shao bin) and Shanghai Wanton Soup.

We also had the grass jelly drinks which were a nice refreshments and I preferred this to the sour plum drink we had previously.

The foods are just as good and on the way out I noticed there actually have a counter for takeaway food. Maybe I will pop by again next time to buy some back for my family!

Some of the things we ordered:
- Liu Sao Bao 流沙包 (Salted Egg Yolk Custard Bun)
- Har Kow 虾饺 (Shrimp Dumpling)
- Carrot Cake
- Red Bean Paste Pancake
- Xiao Long Bao 小笼包 (Soup Dumplings)
- Sichuan Chilli Oil Wanton
- Zha Jiang La Mian
- Fried Hor Fun w/Shrimps in Creamy Egg Sauce
- Mango Pudding

Sounds like a lot but the total per person came up to around $12-13. Which I think is really cheap considering how much we ordered.

The restaurant is quite a walk away from Mustafa Centre but a little exercise goes a long way when you are planning to eat lots of good food. When we reached, there was a line of people waiting outside. However we were given the menu and some chairs to sit on while waiting for seats in the restaurant. While waiting my friends and I input our orders into the order chit. This ensured that once we were seated, our food would have been in the midst of being prepared and thus cut down the waiting time.

We didn't have to wait long to be seated, but as much as I like to be seated indoors where the air conditioner is, we were seated outside. (Oh well. Luckily the weather wasn't very humid that day.)
The restaurant is decorated in a very plain manner, but the food speaks for itself which is fine. All the tables has this little machine which allows you to call for the waiter, bill or other stuffs. Which means its very efficient when you want something and you do not have to stand up and shout for the waiters when you are seated quite a distance away.

The main stars of the show that blew my stomach, no mind, away was the 小笼包 (soup dumplings) and 流沙包 (Salted Egg Yolk Custard Bun). I love love love custard buns and the ones at Swee Choon is so swoon-worthy. It literally explodes in the mouth (go try it and you will know what I mean. You have been warned
) when i took the first bite. Really lives up to its name. The xiao long bao's dumpling skin did not break easily which means patrons can lift up the dumpling without the soup spilling out of it. I have nothing to complain about the dumpling itself. Tastes awesome.

The sichuan chilli oil wanton was just as good. I like the spiciness and yet tangy taste of the latter. Besides dim sum, one can order main dishes like the Zha Jiang La Mian and Fried Hor Fun with Shrimps in Creamy Egg Sauce.

I also ordered a mango pudding as dessert but it is more like mango dessert with sago and pomelo.

Swee Choon is definitely one dim sum restaurant to visit for nice tasty dimsum at affordable prices.

The thing about Swee Choon is that the menu, however you look at it, it just never gets dull! There's always things that you can never get tired of and have to come back no matter how many times you've tried. The Salted Egg Yolk Custard Bun -3pc ($3.60) is what I highly rave about to people. I won't comment, but do judge by the golden filling!

We've also ordered a lot of other things that sums up our bill to around $68, for pax of 4 it was really cheap. It was up to the point where we were too full and couldn't finish. Definitely one of the the most affordable dim sum places in Singapore!

Swee Choon is one of Singapore’s oldest established dim sum restaurants, having more than 40 years of heritage. What was originally a single unit shop-house at Jalan Besar has grown to occupy 4 connecting shop-houses and even has tables in the back alley.

I first came to know Swee Choon years ago because it opened till 6am, and was the perfect supper place for drunk party-goers. Strangely, the traditional dim sum model has always been a morning affair, but Swee Choon Tim Sum has managed to turn it around, only opening for business at 6pm instead. After clubbing, Swee Choon is fairly accessible from town and thus caters to the midnight supper gang. Families and youngsters alike patronize this popular spot along Jalan Besar.

If you haven’t heard of Swee Choon, you haven’t clubbed hard enough in Singapore.

Dim sum is known for ordering in variety so that everybody can share. I’m only highlighting some of the best dim sums I liked at Swee Choon, as there’s just too much too list.

Yam Paste with Pumpkin and Ginko Nut ($3.80). Yes, it’s a dessert but it was the first to arrive on our table. It’s a coffee shop, so don’t expect Swee Choon to serve dishes according to course order. Yam paste was at the thickness I like, not overly gluey, just the right sweetness and the portion was not too much to get jelat (sick of it). Coconut milk made it very fragrant as well.

Swee Choon Mee Suah Kueh ($2.00). This is Swee Choon’s signature carrot kueh mounted with Mee Suah then fried. Crispy mee suah on the top paired with the soft insides of the kueh makes the bite more multi-dimensional, rather than the usual carrot cake.

Red Bean Paste Pancake ($4.80). Red Bean paste has always been a childhood favourite of mine, which makes this pancake awesome. Swee Choon makes the pancake skin thin enough so that there is a good ratio of red bean paste to crispy pancake dough. A balanced bite of red bean and pancake with each rectangle piece. Perfection.

Prawn and Banana fritter ($2.80). Combining prawn and bananas might have sounded crazy at first, but this is a wonderful dish. Crispy fried, after biting through the crispy exterior you taste the soft banana flesh, then hit the firmer prawn meat. Banana and prawns lend a sweetness that oddly works together, making the fried dough more exciting. Swee Choon Char Siew Pau

Char Siew Pau ($1.80). Some places serve mini char siew pau for ants, but Swee Choon sticks to the big manly classic version. A classic dim sum order, you can’t say you’ve had dim sum without ordering char siew pau. Sweet pork filling and a pau skin that is bouncy and soft.

Har Kow ($2.40). I’m slightly irked here because Har Kaw used to be served in FOURS since the cavemen invented dim sum, but now it comes in TWOs at Swee Choon. Same goes for the Siew Mai. A good Har kaw is all in the skin’s recipe, which isn’t bad at Swee Choon, but I think Tim Ho Wan does it better.

This is just one of the subtle ways that Swee Choon tries to increase price, as well as serving some french fry looking, weird turnip appetizer ($1) at the start of the meal.Swee Choon Xiao long bao

Shanghai Xiao Long Pau ($4.00). Thank goodness the Xiao Long Pau still comes in fours. Swee Choon’s Xiao Long Pau is really good, with a firm skin that doesn’t just break and spill precious soup all over with merely a touch. You have to nip it firmly with chopsticks to break apart, then slurp up the soup and eat the Xiao Long Bao. Dip with vinegar and get some ginger strips in as well.

Fried Prawn Dumpling with Mayonnaise ($4.20). I’m perplexed that some dishes come in TWOs, some in FOURs and this one here comes in THREES. Gosh stick to some consistency. I like these fried prawn dumplings better than the Har Kow. Swee Choon’s dough for fried dim sum is consistently good. They fry upon order and everything comes crispy hot. The mayonnaise adds a bit of wetness to take away the monotonous fried dryness.

Pork ribs with black bean sauce ($2.80). Another cost cutting measure can be seen in the pork ribs here, where they hide yam cubes below the pork ribs. HA! Thought I wouldn’t notice did ya. I’ve been eating pork ribs with black bean sauce dim sum for over 20 years and no, yam has never been in the recipe. Although the pork and sauce does taste very tender and delicious, the amount of meat is pretty abysmal. I’d skip this dish as its not worth it.

Salted Egg Yolk Custard Bun ($3.60). This here, is the Pièce de résistance of Swee Choon. You must try it. The crusty, sweet and salted egg yolk filling, flowing with their soft pau is truly a delight and one of the best salted egg yolk custard bun I’ve had in Singapore. None of that raw eggy taste, the custard is very well made.

Overall, I feel that Swee Choon Tim Sum has maintained it’s standards through the many years, but has raised prices subtly. This is understandable in the rising rent and costs of ingredients in Singapore. The amount of dim sum variety here is also amazing, even serving some sze char dishes if you oddly came to Swee Choon Tim Sum NOT for Dim Sum.

Swee Choon Tim Sum is still one of Singapore’s oldest and most successful dim sum restaurants that won’t break a hole in your wallet. Fried dim sum dishes are still fried a la minute even with the increase in crowd and not pre-made. It embodies our local taste through the years, and is comparable to Hong Kong Michelin star dim sum restaurant Tim Ho Wan.

Located at Jalan Besar with really very simple deco, I feel that they serve relatively decent dim sum. There is nothing to rave about the deco here, just simple shop space with some tiles on the walls and lot of tables and chairs. Service here has improved over the years and now they even have a counter near the main door to navigate the ever long queue forming outside the shop. Food is always served very promptly but the only issue you might face here is for those who drive to find a parking lot

You can either walk from the farrer park mrt or from the nearby bus stop.

Chicken Claws aka 凤爪 ($2.50)
Personally this is the last dish on earth that I would ever order as I really have difficulties crossing the hurdle of eating those feets that stepped onto the dirty floor daily. However my partner S is a big fan of this and I was kinda forced to try it. Surprisingly I like it. it was really flavourful and soft. On top of that, it is very well handled with not even a tinge of the dirty shitty feel and S also told me about the collagen that chicken feets has thus this become one of my favourite dish to order these days.

Steamed beancurd roll in oyster sauce aka 蚝油鲜竹卷 ($3.20)
One thing I like about this dish is that they use the whole fresh prawn to wrap it in the beancurd skin. However I still prefer the deep fried one as this is a replicated version by just adding some special oyster sauce to it.

Salted egg yolk custard bun aka 奶黄流沙包 ($3.60)
This is one of the best loved item on the menu. The salted egg yolk custard bun here has a intense aroma of the salted egg yolk yet it is not "jelat" after eating it. On top of that, there is a well balance of saltiness and sweetness. I would highly recommend this yummilious salted egg yolk custard to anybody who has a thing for salted egg yolk.

Fried Dou Miao with Garlic aka 蒜茸炒豆苗 ($6)
Frying of dou miao is never an easy task as the importance to make sure that it's thoroughly cooked and yet not overcooked is very crucial. For this dish, Swee Choon has it spotted on. On top of the fragrant of the garlic, the dou miao is light and easy to finish it in a snap.

Chrysanthemum Tea aka 菊花茶 ($1.30)
The drinks here are just mediocre as compare to the dim sum.I guess it's always a good pairing to have some tea while having dim sum thus it's my regular drink to order here. However for only $1.30, please do not expect a big pot of tea. The above is the what i have ordered the other day and the total spending was $22.55 inclusive of 7% GST. There is no service charge here.

Overall there are hit and miss for the food here depending on what food you order. However for a supper joint, food here are decent and affordable. Personally I would choose this above all the rest of the midnight dim sum place in Singapore.Do give it a try if you have not try it yet.

We were here on a Wednesday night (approx. 9pm) and there was no queue - with surprisingly a few empty tables. So to escape from queuing for Swee Choon, you know when to visit it! From a few diehard Swee Choon fans, they warned that it was normal to sit along the road outside Swee Choon to wait for a table. But we were unexpectedly lucky.

Here is the Swee Choon menu and what we ordered!

These are not soggy fries - well, internal joke at the table, hahaha - if I'm not wrong it was preserved sour radish which nobody touched because the only person who did curled up in aversion almost immediately.

Okay here comes the main dishes. There are a lot more dimsum that we ordered but are not featured here because my stomach space was unfortunately limited... these are the few which I tried. I will definitely follow up with another trip soon to try their La Mian as well!

Siew Mai ($1.80 for 2)
Not impressed with the siew mai here, possibly because we had a longer-than-usual pre-meal photography session, the siew mai skin enveloping the pork and prawn fillings were quite sticky. But the saving grace was the delicious blend of pork, prawn, and the slight hint of ginger in the siew mai fillings. Obligatory order at any dim sum restaurant - go ahead and order it, but eat it upon arrival at the table.

Again, I need to remind that I am not a fan of fried food, but this is a signature dish at Swee Choon that cannot be missed out. This is really quite an interesting dish, with a crispy and fragrant exterior of fried vermicelli and soft rice cake on the inside. You are recommended to try this.

Beancurd Prawn Roll ($3 for 2)
You've got to try this one. You can tell that Swee Choon doesn't really reuse their oil too much (I'm sensitive to reused oil) and that they don't scrimp on their ingredients at all. I really liked it because the prawns are very fresh and the skin is not overly-fried. A happy dimsum pop-in-the-mouth that I would have gone for seconds if only my stomach can contain more. A unique piece which I think most of the other dimsum restaurants lack.

Prawn & Banana Fritters ($2.80 for 2)
Not as enjoyable as their Beancurd Prawn Roll, these oily fritters felt creative but strange. An acquired taste required for this - I'm still used to the mango-and-prawn kind of combination. This reminds me a little of goreng pisang. With prawns.

Steamed Salted Egg Yolk Custard Bun ($3.60 for 3)
My number one love in dim sum restaurants and a whole lot of fun trying to perfectly squeeze out the custard with my left hand and taking a photo of it with my right. I swear, photographing a custard bun in action is an art in itself! Swee Choon's custard buns are surprisingly lighter on the palate. The custard fillings are less savoury and more sweet, but in general lighter (I'm comparing to Victor's Kitchen famed custard buns). The fluffiness of the bun is acceptable, though there is room for improvement. Again, I attribute it to the long photography session.
I prefer: Victor's Kitchen

Shanghai Xiao Long Bao ($4 for 4)
Their XLB was average for me: accomplishing all that it should be - thin but unbroken skin, savoury and tasty soup, chewy fillings and perfect size for one mouthful. However, I find that it could have been juicier (ie. more XLB soup) packed in that little bun. It is also slightly smaller than Din Tai Fung's xiao long bao.
I prefer: Din Tai Fung

Didn't managed to try the Carrot Cake ($2) and Char Siew Bun ($1.80 for 2) because I was too full.

A whole table of dimsum goodness... to sum up the Swee Choon experience, I think that it is wonderful for those people who stay nearby or those who want to enjoy variety at a one-stop-shop but not worth it to travel all the way there out of curiosity. Most of the dimsum served is of sincerely good quality.

The atmosphere is quite nostalgic, complete with cars whizzing past the Jalan Besar busy streets, bustling conversations and laughter around round tables. Perfect for large group gatherings where you can order a lot and try a bit of everything.

Who says we only can enjoy our dim sum during tea time? Operating from 6pm-6am, Swee Choon Dim Sum Restaurant is the ideal place you can go when you want to satisfy your dim sum cravings at night/morning. For the past few years, whenever I wanted some decent & affordable Chinese food, this place will always come to my mind. There's always a queue whenever I go, which says a lot about its popularity, but definitely worth the wait! There's always a queue whenever I go, which says a lot about its popularity, but definitely worth the wait! Ordered a non-dim sum dish first, this Fried Hor Fun with Shrimps in Creamy Egg Sauce ($5.50) was fried to perfection with delicious savory egg gravy.

Another non-dim sum dish is the Zha Jiang La Mian ($4.50), it was yummy in the beginning but you may want to share it with your party because you may get tired of the taste after awhile.

A must-order dish at any dim sum restaurants is the Xiao Long Bao, this Shanghai Xiao Long Bao -4pc ($3.50) is totally awesome & I do personally think that it's better than some other higher class Chinese restaurants in town because this is just so authentic. Wished that I've ordered more.

Another popular dish this restaurant serves is the Sichuan Chili Oil Wanton -4pc ($3.50). Possibly the best I've had in Singapore because it's so flawlessly smooth with good explosion of flavours.

The other things we ordered includes the must-try Steamed Salted Egg Yolk Custard Bun -3pc ($2.40). Take my advice, don't ever leave this place without getting this or you may possibly regret your chance of tasting some awesome luscious golden custard.

There was also an awesome Beancurd Prawn Roll -2pc ($2.80) alongside some decent Siew Mai -2pc ($1.60), Har Kow -2pc ($2), Carrot Cake -2pc ($1.80) and Red Bean Paste Pancake ($4.80). All of which tasted okay at pretty reasonable prices.

And since it's always good to occasionally complete your meals with desserts, my friend and I got the Longan Doufu ($2.20) and Mango Pudding ($2.20). Though the prices are low, I wish the restaurant could make some improvements on their desserts because even though they aren't bad, there aren't any wow factors either.

Overall, the food were enjoyable and service were relatively efficient too, possibly because they have these buttons on their tables/walls for you to call for any assistance without raising your arms, very convenient! Besides, their menu selection is always a plus point! So this is definitely a recommended place for good tasting Hong Kong & Shanghai dim sum or simply any late night supper!

These owners are our long time family friends. Seeing as how my grandmother used to live around the corner just behind Swee Choon at Desker Road. Last I saw, it's now an antique knick knack shop and Swee Choon has expanded their business to take over three outlet spaces from just one. It wasn't a long wait even though the queue seemed long. Just go straight to the counter to let the guy know how many seats are required. The cutest pumpkin shaped dim sum. I cannot resist making an order for this.

And the deep fried carrot cake. Best eaten hot. Dipped in creamy mayonnaise. The chewy bits of preserved sausages impart great flavour to this item.

Shanghai Xiao Long Bao (SGD4)
I thought these were pretty good, the XLBs were huge and the soup was rather yummy.
They were stingy with the vinegar-soaked ginger slices though (maybe to reduce wastage?), but thankfully, we can request for more.

I love the egg!

Swee Choon Mee-Suah Kueh (SGD2)
This is highly raved about and got 25 votes the last time I checked on hungrygowhere.
But both my friend and I felt it was so-so only, somewhat oily with nothing to shout about. It doesn't even taste fragrant. :/

Steamed Salted Egg Yolk Custard Bun (SGD3.60)
Highly highly raved, and it was not bad!
The taste of the salted egg yolk was strong and I love the bun skin.

Best to eat when hot though! Mmmmm.

Pan Fried Pork Dumpling (SGD4)
Oilier version of Shanghai Xiao Long Bao, but I think it went well with the ginger slices and vinegar!

Some other food we ordered also include Sichuan Chili Oil Wanton (SGD4) which were quite tasteless and not spicy at all, Har Kow (SGD2.20) which were mehh, Prawn and Banana Fritter (SGD2.80) which was quite yummy but at the same time oily lol, Beancurd Prawn Roll (SGD2.80) which were so juicy and nice and Siew Mai (SGD1.60) which don't taste like what they are supposed to taste like.

Overall, I guess the food at Swee Choon is only so-so but then again, I didn't try the other food, so I can't really judge. I guess if I were to come back again, I'd probably come with a large group so that I can order and try more things.

Dimsum craving and went Swee Choon for dinner. Ordered the standard dimsum like siew mai, prawn dumpling, porridge, pork ribs, egg tart, etc. Most of the food items come in two pieces instead of the usual four. My favourite and must eat is the liu sha bao. The buttery salted egg filling tastes great! It's sweet and salty at the same time, very sinful but very yummy. Next up is the egg tart, crispy sides and soft and sweet egg centre. I also like the chilli dumpling, the spicy sauce goes well wit

Had the cold chicken in chilli, quite special as I never had cold chicken before. However, the chicken meat was quite tough. I don't like the siew mai here, it's bigger than those at other restaurants but not as delicious. The prawn dumpling, porridge, pork ribs and chicken feet were quite ordinary. Dimsum quite worth it for the amount we ordered, but I feel there's better dimsum restaurants out there!
