Named after a legendary samurai, Miyamoto Musashi, who was famed for his double sword style, the award winning Menya Musashi has become a household name in Japan since making its debut in 1996. Featuring a creamier soup base than most ramen, it comes in white, red and black versions.

I noticed more & more of Menya Musashi outlets expanding & I'm really curious how good is their ramen. Finally, today I passed by an outlet at VivoCity and decided to lunch with my friend. We got a table pretty fast and we ordered the same type of ramen ~ White Tora Cha Shu Ramen. Their set meals allow you to pick from a selection of sides, hence I opted for the Bokuto Gyoza while my friend ordered the Fried Chicken (Tori Karrage). When our ramen arrived, it's quite a big serving! I'm glad to see that as I was really famished at that point in time! The first thing i noticed was the nice & runny Tamago ~ oh, looks oishii! The Cha Shu were rather big & thick slices as well; my only lament would be the Cha Shu were not tender enough. The White Tora soup base was not bad as well. As for the side dishes, the Bokuto Gyoza were not the crispy kind but ok in taste. The Fried Chicken was surprisingly good, tender & not oily! Overall, I find that their set meals are a good deal and comes in a sizable portion! (If not enough, you could also top up the ramen!)

I had an intense ramen craving at 9pm and Menya Musashi seemed like the most natural option in vivocity -I've been to Menya Musashi several times and I've tried all 3 of their ramen soup bases- white, red and black (which I did not like because it was too thick and "heaty" for me!).I ordered a Red Chasu Ramen ($12.90) and this comes with 2 pieces of charsiew. There are other options where you can add on side dishes (like gyozas, etc) as well as add on char siew. The Red Ramen seems to be more flavoursome than the white one, but also less thick than the black -plus point is that it carries a substantial, flavoursome spiciness. The charsiew has a slightly charred fragrance to it and its braised fattiness makes the meat tenderly slide off from the fats. I would have liked it with a bit more sweetness to complete the flavour though. The noodles are also a bit too cooked for me -they weren't as springy as I imagined them to be But I did like that there were bamboo shoots in the ramen, giving a lovely contrast to the textures. The decor here has really nice touches, from the tray for the soup bowls, the details on their bowls and walls, as well as the notices which are also provided in the japanese language. Also, service at menya musashi isn't too bad, and the price is reasonable too. If you're going for the first time, I do recommend the red ramen

I was craving for those authentic Japanese Ramen so I headed to Menya Musashi to satisfy that craving of mine. I ordered their Black Musashi Ramen, they also have it in Red and White. I ordered their Cha Shu Ramen. It was really delicious. the soup was just to die for, it was thick and very rich in flavours. It made you wanna drink mouth after mouth. The ramen itself was so awesome, it was springy and chewy and most importantly it does not stick to your teeth. The cha shu was very tasty, having to absorb all the soup.

Black cha su ramen here is my favourite choice of ramen. Ramen is very chewy and portion is very generous. The half boiled eggs is very soft and really love the egg yolk inside which is very moist and not over cooked. The generous amount of chopped spring onion also has enhanced the taste as well. Their sushi rolls are tasty too. The Japanese rice is not too hard in texture and the thin slices of seaweeds is chewy and goes well to this yummy snack. Both the items at $14.90 and $5.90 respectively are priced reasonably and the service here is good too.

We came at an odd timing for lunch so the restaurant was pretty empty. I have seen reviews about their white, black and red ramen and remembered that the white one was the best as it was the original so i recommended my bf to take it. I didnt wanted ramen so I ordered the gyoza and fried chicken instead. Now now, I really need to give a minus to their price point. that miserable portion of fried chicken cost us more than $6! And really, the quality of food was sorely disappointing. The gyoza and fried chicken was very oily and left a greasy feel in the mouth long after. The fried chicken was not even very crispy, and felt as if it was soggy from too much oil. Gyoza was very forgettable. When the white tonkotsu ramen came, we noticed that the portion was slightly small compared to the ramen we had at other places. There was also a layer of oil on top of the broth. However, the broth was thick and looked quite promising. I was so excited about tasting the broth and probably, I had too high an expectation but it was lacking oomph. After much discussion, we realised that it was not salty enough! It was strangely because the broth was definitely tasty, but the lack of saltiness actually made it taste rather flat. Well, not being salty is a good thing, but at the expense of taste and for the all-important broth of ramen, I think Menya really could do better. The egg was also too hard and you can see that the yolk is not at all runny. Ingredients were miserly portions. 2 slices of charsiu, bits of veg and thats it. The whole meal just left us feeling very unsatisfied. Having said that, I would probably give it a chance and visit again. I saw they had something interesting called the thunder ramen. Apparently very spicy. Well although i love spicy stuff, given how oily the food we had looked, I might have to think twice.Check out more yummy reviews at www.kopidiem.wordpress.com
