Buttermilk waffles with rum icecream and banana
The ice-cream melts way too fast but everything goes so well together - the warm bananas, the cold ice-cream and the soft and fluffy waffles. Am I in heaven yet?

Their menu is rather limited, so is their variety of cake selection. Good thing is that there is no GST and service charge! Here's a reason to go back again.

The Mushroom Medley was indeed a harmonious blend of sauteed mushrooms, brioche and egg. The sauteed mushrooms brought out much of the earthy flavour that made the otherwise plan brioche so savoury, and the egg had this runny yolk that looked like it was going to burst with a poke from the fork. If I could have anything for breakfast, this would be something that I would never get tired of.

The Brioche French Toast was a flipside from the savoury Mushroom Medley. It was something that was seemingly on the sweeter side. Served with bananas in between, the bread gave some sort of eggy yet sweet taste from the bananas which was quite unique. The choice of using Vanilla yoghurt instead of Vanilla ice-cream was a sound one; the yoghurt was able to take off some of the sweetness from the bananas and gave it a nice sour flavour to top onto the brioche. The toasted almonds was definitely fragrant and crispy and the blueberries were pretty fresh too.

The Honey Lavender Teacake surely did hit the expectations; the layer of honey on top provided this intense sweetness and there was also a heavy aroma from the Lavender on the cake. The cake was also light enough for an after-meal treat, though it could be a bit crumbly for some because certain parts fell off pretty easily. That being said though this cake is totally worth a try if you have made your visit there!

The last time my friend and I went to DOC was for dinner. But when we got there, it was closed! Heading home quite disappointed, we planned for a next trip there on a weekend.... just to make sure that it's open.We went there on Saturday, about 6pm. Sure, the cafe was still open, but the kitchen was already closed. So we just ordered the salmon quiche and apple tart. The quiche really had a strong fishy taste. It was OK. The tart was also just average. I like the ice cream though.

The Brioche French Toast is filled with maple syrup bananas and serve with vanilla yoghurt, toasted almonds and blueberries. The french toast was soft and the egg and butter taste is very delectable.

The Mushroom Medley is sauteed with white wine & herbs on brioche toast topped with a sunny side up. The sauteed mushroom tasted very nice and made the whole dish appetising. The toast was the same as the French Toast, minus the stuffed bananas.

The Honey & Lavender Teacake had a very strong smell of lavender. Taste Very nice and comes in a rather big portion, although the taste of the honey was not very apparent.

The Pulled Pork Sandwich ($13) was one of the popular dishes that I've heard before heading there. It's my first time having it and though I've to agree that it's good, I was expecting more. I thought that the pork could be more flavourful. That aside, the carrot and coriander coleslaw that was layered on top of the pulled pork made the dish really refreshing. The chargrilled Broccoli with Garlic and Chili that was served at the side was very crunchy and tasty as well. Overall, this dish is definitely worth a try.

The Mocha ($5.50) was pretty disappointing. I was expecting more from them. After all, they are named the Department of Caffeine! I think that the coffee could have been stronger. I wouldn't say it's bad, but definitely not the best I've had.

And now, this is the reason why everyone is visiting D.O.C time and again.

THE BUTTERMILK WAFFLES WITH BUTTER RUM BANANAS!! THIS IS DA BOMB. Nobody can leave D.O.C without trying this.

I'm personally not a fan of soft waffles; I prefer those that are crispy. But this is sooo good. It's not soggily soft, but it's actually kind of chewy, yet not to the extent of making your jaws tired from chewing. The butter rum banana was soooo tasty and the vanilla ice cream was really rich and sticky too (definitely not the cheapo kind as you can see vanilla seeds inside!). It's so enjoyable eating it, my sis and I had to play scissors paper stone to decide who gets to eat the last mouth (and I lost booo). Priced at $12, I think it's worth every penny. This definitely goes on my list of the best waffles.

This cafe has really high potential as I've heard from other foodies that the other items on the menu are really good too. I'm kinda reluctant to share this place cos it's really small and I think it's gonna get crowded soon. So go soon before it gets crowded!! I'm definitely heading back to try more items!!

Opened for barely one month but already making waves on Instagram, Department of Caffeine is the newest addition to the row of cafes in the Duxton enclave. Tucked away at the beginning of Duxton road, this edgy coffee joint with an industrial-chic groove, blends together the hard metallic steel of their chairs with a cosy homely vibe lent by the majority wooden paneled walls and tables. Its appeal is inviting and the entire space seats about 20 people quite comfortably without intruding on your neighbour's personal space as some smaller joints usually do.

And 'taking their food and drink seriously' as they claim, the weekday menu boasts of well thought-out comfort fare that is simple yet satisfying. Centered around mostly sandwiches, their offerings include Pulled Pork, Meatball, Fish Finger and Mushroom, all served with a side salad for $13. Mains such as Roast Chicken or Poached Salmon Fillet come with a choice of 1/2/3 salads for $13/$15/$17. Desserts are either homemade cakes and pastries from the counter or Buttermilk Waffles with Ice-Cream at $12.

As for drinks, caffeine-addicts rejoice. This place is after all, called the Department of Caffeine. Made from specialty coffee beans from Australian roaster Five Senses, the barristers here pull a full-bodied perk-me-up for $4 upwards. Tea enthusiasts are also not neglected, with a good range of choices from homegrown tea specialist Tea Bone Zen Mind.

We came here on a weekday afternoon and was pleasantly surprised that this hidden gem was still untarnished and unmarred by huge crowds, where conversations are tiresome because you constantly get drowned out by other people's voices or when you have to hurry and leave after having your meal because there is a long queue waiting outside.

Instead, the atmosphere was exactly like what a cafe should be- chilled, relaxing and perfect to simply while the afternoon away over your cuppa or cake and conducive for a heart-to-heart.

The Pulled Pork $13 was certainly one of the better ones I have tried. Sweet, succulent and smothered in their house BBQ sauce, the shredded pieces of pulled pork were tender and absolutely delectable. Complimented with the crunchy coleslaw of carrots and coriander, this combination was indeed a treat. Special mention to that side salad of carrots dressed with Moroccan spices and sultanas, which was a real crowd pleaser with all of us.

Currently one of the most featured dessert item on Instagram feeds, this Butter Rum Bananas Buttermilk Waffles with Vanilla Ice-Cream $12 was simply irresistible. While the characteristic smell of Rum was undeniably intense and a little too overwhelming for me, the others found it extremely appetizing. I especially enjoyed the buttermilk waffle with its extra-light fluffy texture and crispy brown exterior. This is a definite must-order here!

Overall, I had a very enjoyable afternoon here. Department of Caffeine is indeed a treasure trove and you will be sure to find me back here very soon as I am extremely keen to try out their weekend brunch menu offerings.
