As Halloween is coming, the outlet has come out with a new limited edition flavour of sushi roll  known as The Black Magic Roll. It costs $8.90 a roll and only available at the Cathay outlet, via mobile application and online ordering. The sushi roll is stuffed with roasted peppers, kani stick, shredded chicken, roasted pumpkin, deep fried soft shell crab and tomato based chilli sauce. The soft shell crab gives a crispy and crunchy texture, while the pumpkin gives it a sweet and buttery texture. Although the chilli sauce looks a bit dark, it actually tastes not bad giving it a sweet taste with a hint of spicy. Together it gives a explosive combination in the mouth. So don't forget to try it. It is only available from now till end of this month.查看更多

I was at Cathay and ordered Maki San salad.  I was given ordered form to fill and select the choices that I wanted. I ordered the Mega salad at $11.90 with the mixed letture, 6 essential like cherry tomatoes, shredded carrot, apple, peach, parmesan cheese and boiled egg.  I have salmon sashimi as my special.  raisins and seasame dressing to fill the salad bowl. The salad is fresh especially the sashimi, vegetable and fruits.  The dressing is not tasty and yet thick in texture.查看更多

I am a BIGGGG fan of Maki-San and when i started school in August, i cannot remember the number of times i have been there since. It's the perfect meal that can be ordered and prepared in a jiffy especially when you are in a hurry. And since its sliced into bite-sized portions, can be eaten in between tasks too.So one day i decided to give their fried maki a try. Having said that i am a big fan, it is not an understatement if i say their fried maki is terribly dry... I think the normal maki is worth having but not the fried version. It doesn't come with any sauce (i don't know why, maybe they are worried it will leak or something during the frying process) but they do provide the sauce in a little saucer.查看更多

Located at the basement of the Cathay, this shop reminds me of the "subway" of sushi- where you can customize and choose the ingredients of your sushi roll. We zoomed into ordering a mega San ($9.90) which promises a wrap sushi with 5 ingredients, 1 special, 1 sprinkle and 1 house sauce. Customizing your sushi is fun here and we had a lot of did imagining our desired sushi- unfortunately the roll we choose came out a little confused. We had roasted mushroom, japanese omelette, avocado, to book and tempura enoki mushroom mashed in yuzu honey vinaigrette. Sounds tasty on paper, but the combined effect was really mis mash- the flavours stood out individually but did not gel well together. I would recommend getting their tempura items- such as soft shell crab- as it is deep fried fresh on the spot. It was one of theore distinct ingredients that tasted good. I would stay away from the turkey bacon bits, as it contributed to a smoky taste that I didn't quite enjoy in my sushi roll. All in all, it was a self service, where you get too pick and choose a plethora of ingredients, but the end product may not be as tasty as it seems on paper!查看更多

Maki-san has become a staple for me because it's so near to my school. & I've been trying to eat healthy whenever possible, and this provides a really good choice for lunch or dinner. They've two main categories for you to choose from - salad or sushi. I've tried both, & have sworn by their salad now. However, if you're in a rush, this may not be a good choice since each order is custom-made according to the form that you fill in. The queue & waiting time can be rather long during lunch & dinner hours, especially on weekends.Salad ($11.90)Salad, with unagi as the main. I still prefer my roast beef over unagi though. I love how the salad is so filling & if you have it for lunch, it can probably last till a very late dinner. But that's only if you choose the brown rice as the base, because brown rice is really high in fibre & definitely a much better choice if you want to eat clean, as compared to their white counterparts.Sushi ($9.90)Their sushis are not as filling, and guys probably won't find it filling. However, if you choose the brown rice as the base of the sushi, you'll find that the taste is so overwhelming it'll cover the taste of the rest of the ingredients wrapped in it. It can be quite troublesome to eat too, especially if you want to bite it. Overall, I'd recommend the salad as it's more worth it as compared to the sushi. If you're choosing Maki-san as an option to eat healthy or lose weight, please choose the ingredients properly. Do not order those cream-based dressings as they're really high in fat, & for the ingredients, do not choose those tempura ingredients as they're ladened with oil.http://flightplayback.blogspot.com查看更多

Fancy having control of what ingredients you want in your sushi or salad? Maki-San is the place to go. Being conveniently located at The Cathay, this place has a very unique and interesting marketing concept that attracts the crowd. It has a pretty hassle-free self-service style too, you simply tick what ingredients you want on an simple and neat order form, pass it to the cashier for payment, collect a queue number, have a seat & collect your food soon after. For sushi, you get to choose between Little-San ($6.90) and Mega-San ($9.90). Mega-San gives you additional 2 Essential & 1 Special ingredient so I've chosen that. My ingredients for Mega-San includes: 1 Wrap - Traditional Nori Seaweed1 Rice - Healthy Brown Rice5 Essentials - Tamagoyaki (Japanese Omelette), Avocado, Carrot, Kani Stick (Crabstick) & Tobiko (Flying Fish Roe)1 Special - Teriyaki Chicken1 Sprinkle - Roasted Almond Flakes1 Housesauce - BBQ The sushi comes in a really cute looking box which you can bring home and reuse it if you want. Overall, the sushi was great and the ingredients were fresh too, the rolling skills can be improved but nevertheless, everything else was near perfection, they have pretty friendly staff too. Moreover, having my own customized sushi is just way too awesome!查看更多

This is a new restaurant at The Cathay. The shop looks good! Something new is like a kind of fast food sushi. There is a menu to let you to choose, what you want to put inside the sushi roll. There is much variety in the menu. I ordered with sashimi, chicken floss, shrimps, egg, tuna, corn and etc. Overall it is not bad. The taste is good. It costs $9.90 for the normal sushi roll. You can try other items too, they have salad as well.查看更多

Tired of having those fixed sushi? Here at Maki-San, you can get to customised your own sushi with the kind of rice, ingredients and sauce.I ordered a little-san for myself and I think the rice was dry. Next, it would have been better if they are more generous with the fillings.Overall, I find it acceptable but I wouldn't come down personally for a customised sushi.查看更多

Maki Sushi seemed popular judging from the lunchtime crowds. The concept is interesting enough. You get to mix and match whatever you like to eat to form your very own unique maki sushi. I found it rather overpriced unfortunately. Perhaps it is a choice of wrong ingredients but I found the rice a little too sticky and the prawns were small and tasteless. And it is very hard to eat without a plate. The concept of a box is interesting enough but they tend to clutter up, making it hard to take the pieces out.查看更多

I have heard very mixed reviews about Maki-San before I tried it - ranging from raves to downright refusals for a second visit. From the exterior, it looked really interesting: a sushi counter with many ingredients compartmentalized neatly.*Sushi chefs hard at work*1. Submit Order Form2. Make Payment3. Collect OrderIt's 100% self-service except for the preparing of food, and therefore you get to skip the service charge. Not a good idea for a formal meeting. I love the quirky pictures on the walls! :)Here is Maki-San's menu! They have the salad menu as well as the sushi menu. Since this is a sushi bar, recommended to try their sushi. It's like Subway (you know how Subway works, right) but it's sushi and not sandwich. $6.90 for Little San (Wrap + Rice + 3 Essentials + 1 Sprinkle + 1 House Sauce), $9.90 for Mega San (Wrap + Rice + 5 Essentials + 1 Special + 1 Sprinkle + 1 House Sauce)Don't belittle Little San. I was stuffed at the end of Little San, and trust me it's more than enough. I began with an empty stomach! You also can choose "Essentials" and "Additionals" (ingredients to go along). The number of "Essentials" and "Additionals" you can choose depends on the size of the sushi. Recommendation for ordering:Size - Little San, and leave some space for dessert. Essentials - Roasted Mushrooms, Tamagoyaki (you may think it's a waste but it raises the comfort food quality of the sushi)Special - Teriyaki ChickenSprinkle - Roasted Sesame SeedsHouse Sauce - Quite a bit adventurous but I loved the Yuzu Honey Vinaigrette I triedHere the sushi chef is preparing my maki. My sushi comes in a super pretty long box! Which I collect now. The taste of the maki was quite interesting, especially the yuzu house sauce with a tangy flavour that is normally not found in sushi. It was the highlight of the sushi; the sauce was the saving grace of an otherwise mediocre sushi bar.The supposed "sprinkle" was almost non-existent unless you concentrate really hard. The tamago was a sweet addition to the otherwise flat flavoured sushi. They could have done better in terms of the temperature of the sushi, it was room-temperature and almost slightly warm. I definitely like my sushi colder.Overall, I don't think I'll visit this place again because the food is hardly to be raved about. It is more of the novelty of the idea of a mix-and-match sushi place and also it's pretty affordable as well for a full meal in Orchard/Somerset area.查看更多

The food is rather overrated and overhyped. The only thing special about Maki-san is that you can customized your sushi according to what ingredients you want to put. Simply check the ingredients that you want on a list and then pay for your order. I got the mega-san which is a more expensive version (top-up $2 i think) and you can choose more ingredients. The seaweed is quite soft and the rice is not fab. It's an experience though, will not make a trip down on purpose just to eat it again.查看更多

Here you can design your sushi by selecting your favourite items to be rolled into a sushi. For a more healthy version, you can select Healthy Soy with Sesame as the wrap and Healthy Brown Rice as the rice.A number tag is given after placing my order for a Roast N'Roll ($8.90), which is made of hand-shredded chicken, rolled along with asparagus, roasted tomatoes and grilled zucchini, and topped with BBQ sauce. It is beautifully packed into a box. Very cute looking. The slices are a bit uneven.I am quite disappointed with the amount of filling. It looks quite little. It taste quite dry. I cannot tastes the BBQ sauce. It is quite crunchy.查看更多

For more details, please visit http://foodesteem.blogspot.com/2013/04/maki-san.htmlMaki-San is one of the unique sushi shops in Singapore. You get to select what you want in your very own sushi, and see how they make your sushi. It is then packed into a rectangular box to hold the sushi in place even if you are dining in. Very interesting decor, and sushi is not bad, except that their seaweed is a little hard to chew apart. Had tried both their little san and mega san, with difference in only their number of ingredients and inclusive of "specials" only for mega san. I think it is worth a visit, and another visit for me :) Do visit my blog for more pictures and descriptions! 查看更多

For full reviews, please visit http://thumbsforfood.blogspot.sg/2013/03/maki-san-thumbsforfood.htmlMaki San has been around for quite some time in the basement of The Cathay. At Maki San, you get to customize your sushi and salad! Maki San is actually quite a small eatery. I would find that it is more of a place to grab a bite rather than to go there to have a proper meal. Having said that, I really like the creativity of the shop! What is cool is that Maki San's sushi rolls come served in this really pretty and colorful drawer-like box that makes one happy and anticipate eating it. As you can see in the pictures below, we picked our own ingredients and they rolled it into a roll, cut it into even pieces and place it in the box. One thing good is that they have quite a substantial amount of ingredients you can choose from. From the choice of wrap to the choice of rice and the sauces, I got to say it took quite long for us to decide what we wanted. Overall, I would say Maki San is not a bad choice for people who want a light and relatively healthy meal! Price wise, I would say it's a little steep. And we tried the Miso Soup which tasted just mediocre.查看更多

Chance upon this interesting stall when i drop by the Cathy with my friend for a movie. Wanting a light meal to tide us through the movie, we decided to share a Mega San costing $9.90 which you can choose 1 wrap, 1 rice, 5 essentials, 1 special, 1 sprinkle and 1 house sauce. We also ordered a tempura enoki mushroom that allow you to choose a dip which we settled on Smoky Cheddar Cheese. How we order is that we just tick what we want on a sheet of paper that contains all their available ingredients that we can mix in. There are too many to list here, but i am sure the wide variety will have some to your likings. :)Our chosen combination are:Wrap: traditional nori (seaweed)Rice: Japanese White RiceEssentials: grilled eggplant, japanese omelette, avocado, parmesan cheese, anchoviesSpecials: grilled unagiSprinkles: sunflower seedsHouse Sauce: Yuzu SesameOur sushi was served in a cute box. The sushi was nicely wrapped and cut into 8 pieces. My friend and i enjoyed the taste of our 'work of art'. The fillings do complement each other and turns out pretty delicious. My only slight displeasure was that the rice and eggplant are really very cold. Our tempura enoki mushroom was served in a paper bag and was rather oily. However, it was really crispy and goes very well with the cheddar sauce that was served in a small plastic bowl. Do note that $1 needs to be added for extra dip.Overall, my friend and i had fun and enjoyed this interesting concept. If you are not in the mood to DIY your own sushi, you can also choose from their signature sushi range which the ingredients are selected for you. By the way, everything is self-service.查看更多
