So today is my lecture recess. However, I still needed to go to campus for assignment submission, and I got a group meeting at 3pm. After submission, I tried to find a place outside campus to chill out while doing another school project, since I was lazy to go home and then go to campus again. After browsing for recommendations on internet, I decided to go to One Man Coffee.

Located on the same main road as my campus, which is Upper Thomson Road, this coffee shop is really accessible. I just needed to take any bus (except 169) from my campus bus stop and after a few stops I arrived already (less than 10 minutes ride). Chance is high that you may miss this coffee shop, since the name sign is not really obvious. I have been walking past it several times yet I never noticed its existence. Btw, One Man Coffee shares the same building space with Crust Gourmet Pizza Bar, so if Crust's sign looks more obvious to you, just go in.

Matcha Latte - $5
Was not in the mood with cold stuff, I chose hot Matcha Latte to accompany my study. The surface was really frothy, and the taste was a bit too sweet for my liking.

French Toast Brioche - $10
with homemade berry compote, candied walnuts, and fresh cream
They serve brunch as well! Heard so much rave about their French toast, so I ordered one. The brioche was so impressive! It was fluffy and buttery, blended nicely with crunchy walnuts. Nothing special with that dollop of fresh cream. The berry compote was super sour, but after a few spoonfuls I started to find it addictive.

Overall, One Man Coffee is one decent place to perk you up. Nett price, no service charge, and free wi-fi, are some plus points to consider. I will definitely come back for that uber good French toast!

Butter Croissant with Homemade Berry Jam and Butter ($4.50). Croissant is soft and fluffy, and most importantly, without the jam and additional portion of butter, the already buttered croissant is sufficient enough to eat it plain.

Gashouse Egg with Bacon Jam , also well known as "Egg-In-The-Bread-With-The-Hole-In-The-Middle" ($10.00). Be careful of your flowing yolk once you cut it through. Bacon Jam is another interesting item on the dish. Both bacon and jam blended well, and I would have liked to purchase some for home-use.

Brioche French Toast ($10.00) with Homemade Berry Compote, Candied Walnuts and Fresh Cream. Berry Compote can be a little sour, but toast is being soaked by the cream which make it soft and not dry to stomach in. Comes with a mild cinnamon taste, and also well-faved most people!

A cafe that has sprung up in the Thomson area a few months back. It's a cafe by day and a pizzeria by night which I think makes so much economic sense. I've walked past this place many times before in the day and it's often dead. Zero business at all. And now that One Man Coffee started operating here in the day, it's so lively with all the chattering of the cafe goers.

The Brioche French Toast was soft and fluffy; you almost didn't have to chew it. The berry compote was really fresh and goes so well with the toast. I don't usually eat nuts but I tried the candied walnuts and couldn't stop reaching out for more. It's pretty addictive! So crunchy and slightly sweet which helps to remove the raw nutty taste.

My favourite is the Gashouse Egg a.k.a Toad In The Hole a.k.a Egg-in-the-bread-with-the-hole-in-the-middle with bacon jam ($10) (yes, the name is that longggg). I loveeee the bacon jam, it tastes like bak kwa! I wished they gave more of that. The second time I went, I requested for the egg to be runny 'cos I hate sunny side up with cooked yolk. The bread ended up less toasted and hence less crispy. I guess we can't always have the best of both worlds?

I would definitely order The Toasted Butter Croisant with Honey Ham and Melted Cheese again. It's such a great comfort food 'cos it's so satisfying and is just a perfect breakfast item. The croissant is light and flaky and it's my second favourite after the one I had at CMCR.

Just a few doors down from its more-known competitor-neighbour Habitat Coffee, it has 2 tables outside and more inside. The atmosphere is cool and relaxed with its brown hues and warm lighting and there's the constant wafting smell of warm, freshly made coffee. Certainly, it is a good place to catch up with friends though it can get a little noisy and tight (the space between tables is slightly small) when crowded. The space is shared with Crust Gourmet Pizza Bar, which takes over after 5pm.

The place was full when we dropped by the place on the Sunday afternoon after choosing to turn away from Habitat Coffee, which had a long wait list. Despite the full house, the service staff were quick to attend to us with a menu and also politely requested that we wait for a short while till there was an available table.

One Man Coffee Menu
The menu is definitely limited, compared to what other cafes have to offer usually but it suffices to satisfy all-day breakfast cravings. Our food took about 15 minutes, which is pretty long, but it came together all at the same time, so I guess the waiting time is alright.

Spinach Salad with prosciutto, toasted pine nuts, cranberries and feta cheese ($10)
The toasted nuts and cranberries provided crunch to the well-flavored salad, which was dressed with olive oil vinaigrette. What made it all the better was the feta cheese that accompanied it. The cheese had a delightful burst-in-the-mouth quality with creaminess, which made the salad all the better with each mouthful. The greens could do with lesser oil dressing and perhaps they could be more generous with the prosciutto but otherwise, this is a hit.

Big Brekkie

Big Brekkie ($12)
The Big Brekkie came beautifully presented, but the sourdough rye bread was a letdown as it was crusty-dry and we had difficulty cutting it. The honey ham likewise, was dry and lacking in flavor. Even the 6-minute eggs - meant to be like lava eggs according to the staff; which was supposed to have a flowy yolk centre, barely scraped through with one yolk nearly solid and the other semi-liquid. Luckily, the spinach salad side dressed in pesto was delectable, though again a little too much oil here. What really stood out on this platter though was the roasted tomatoes, seared to a semi-crisp exterior with a wonderfully juicy sweet interior. Yums.

Brioche French Toast with Homemade Berry Compote, Candied Walnuts and Cream ($10)
Once again, the cafe did a terrific job on presentation. The Brioche French Toast was fluffy and moist with eggy flavor; definitely a must-try for those who love their french toast. The bread soaked up the cream easily and the bread melts in the mouth, but I am not a French Toast person, so I did not enjoy its sweetness too much. The berry compote provided a nice contrasting sour to this.

Bottom right: Gashouse Egg with Bacon Jam ($10)
We were told that this is popular item on the menu, and I can see why. If there is one thing I have to pick to have here, it would be this Gashouse Egg with Bacon Jam. The bacon jam didn't stand out like I expected it to because it basically tasted just like bacon with a little sweet tinge, but it was alright because the bread stole the show. It arrived freshly toasted warm with gooey melted cheese and when the centre was cut, the egg yolk in the middle of the bread flows out wonderfully. Soak it up with the bread and what you have is gastronomic. Must order.

Overall, really decent, if not above average all-day breakfast items from One Man Coffee. They outdid themselves on the beautiful presentation. Definitely one of the most memorable cafes I have been to in a while and I will be back to savour its espressos, which looks like it will deliver as well, if what I saw and smelled was anything to go by.

OMC also stocks B.A.O's pastries. I simply love Christophe's croissants, well the French makes the best croissants! The Chocolate pain is also amazing. Get them to heat it up for that crispy flakiness. Better still, have them with honey ham and melted cheese ($6). Cakes are also available and I was seduced by a Salted Caramel Banana Cake.
For something a little more than sweets, OMC does all-day-breakfast with a lean but mean menu, all of which come out of a pizza oven! Talk about easy to make but delicious food here!
Love the description of the Gashouse Egg aka Toad in hole aka Egg-in-the-bread-with-the-hole-in-the-middle ($10). It's more of a snack I feel. I really do have a monster appetite for breakfast food. The dish is really simple, they really do just make a hole in the fluffy brioche, crack an egg in, top with cheese and into the oven it goes. Almost a croque madame.
Really there's no need to be fancy for brekkie when the ingredients are good (hello ooooozy yolk). What's special is that bacon jam which is smoky, meaty and sweet. I could do with a thick layer of that in the toast anytime. Satisfying flavors, a little dry on the edges, not so satisfying portion but that helps save space for other food.
The Broiche French Toast ($10) is another popular item and it looked freaking amazing with the homemade berry compote, candied walnuts and fresh cream. Of course the dust of sugary white completes the instagram worthy picture.
OMC is a great alternative to the super packed Habitat Coffee which I failed to visit TWICE! Well I guess I'll just have to explore the rest of the Thomson cafés until Habitat becomes less crowded. Anyhoo, great vibe at One Man Coffee but do go early or be prepared to wait as well due to the extremely small space.

I felt that the French Toast ($10) here might have been named wrongly, as it doesn't feel like one, but once you have had a mouthful of this you wouldn't even mind the naming! The brioche toast is soaked in custard and is topped with blueberry jam, cream and walnuts. The brioche is soft and easily melts in your mouth after a bite, while bursting flavours of milkiness and sweetness. The walnuts provides the crisp in this, the cream enhances the creaminess and the blueberry jam enhances the sweetness, but both the cream and jam could be left out as it is great on its own.

Since it was a special, we went straight ahead with the French Toast ($10.00). Served with blueberry jam, candied walnuts and fresh cream, it sounded rather usual but we were very impressed with the toast itself. They were soft and custardy on the inside as the brioche was soaked in custard, along with the walnuts which were crunchy and full of nutty goodness. It was so good that we thought the dish could actually make do without the jam and cream as it stole much of the limelight from the toast itself.

I chose the Salted Caramel Danish ($4.50). According to them, their pastries come from artisan bakery B.A.O. The pastries are warmed upon order. While it was great buttery goodness, the Danish felt rather limp and had crispiness lost, which made it pretty hard to cut through with a fork. At a point of time I simply had to use my hands or just stab the pastry with a fork just to eat it. Not everything was bad though; there was a nice layer of salted caramel in between which made it seem pretty flavourful. The walnuts sprinkled over the top also gave it a nice nutty crunch.

Ordered my usual Flat White ($4.50), which seemed a tad milky to me. The blends used at One Man Coffee are from Stranger’s Reunion according to one of the staff there

A clever way to maximize operations for a place previously only for dinner, One Man Coffee does offer a nice environment for an afternoon chill out. They have also started out their all-day breakfast menu on the week after our visit, which gives a wider variety for brunch-goers.
