This is the subsidiary branch of the famous YEO KENG NAM TRADITIONAL HAINANESE CHICKEN RICE located at 8 Braddell Road for more than 50 years. And what made my first visit to their newly opened branch a memorable one is none other than that warm welcoming feeling demonstrated towards us that made such a difference.
We went on an evening just after a heavy downpour. This air-conditioned Traditional Hainanese Chicken Rice shop is a stone's throw away from the Lavender Food Court located along the Serangoon Road, directly after Little India. We were holding the Groupon voucher when walking towards the shop. We stopped right in front of the shop wanting to verify the information on the voucher before entering. A man wearing a Chef's hat and uniform approached us and said, 'This is the shop!' and ushered us in.
We were immediately served by a nice Auntie that showed us to an empty table then quickly presented the menu to us. The voucher that we obtained was to have their white or roasted chicken at half a price. The original price for half of chicken is $15.00. We opted for the roasted chicken and ordered an additional dish of Salted Egg Pork Ribs King ($11.00) to go along. I ordered a glass of their homemade barley ($1.50) too.
The barley drink was served shortly. Took a sip and immediately liked it, it has got a very flavorful taste of the barley at the right level of sweetness.
The half of roasted chicken with 2 plates of chicken rice served soon after. The half roasted chicken was quite a big portion. The chicken was succulent with all of its juiciness still very much intact to give it the texture of tenderness. Their effort in ensuring the quality of their chilli is commendable. The spiciness level is definitely enticing. I wonder how many chilli buddies were used to give it such a level of spiciness. It has got a tinge of garlic and ginger taste at the right level and not overpowering. Their chilli is one of the nicest that i ever tried, i simply loved it so much. I always love the chilli to be spicy rather than sweet. If you are a fan for such chilli then this is a place you should not missed.
Next up was the Salted Egg Pork Ribs King. The well-seasoned pork ribs were fried first to give its the crispiness before coated with the salted egg yolk that fried with curry leaves and chilli buddies to further enhanced the flavor. The texture of the pork ribs was still very tender. This was a very impressive dish and definitely one of the better ones i ever tried. Honestly, this dish alone is good enough to keep getting me to come back for more.
We ordered another plate of rice to share. Such a nicely prepared fragrant chicken rice is never enough, we ended up wanting more and that explained why we ordered an extra plate of rice.
After done eating, the bill served to our table and we paid. No service charge and GST included. When we walked out of the restaurant, everyone bid us goodbye.
It was that homely feeling that made it an unforgettable experience. We will definitely be back.
