De’Pop Culture is a Pop Art Themed Dessert cafe with ‘De’ stands for Desserts! The whole cafe ambiance is filled with colors and vibrancy. Very bright and welcoming feeling once you step in. Some simple design when combined can become a unique quirky design. Just like the Halloween hat on top of the speakers that resembles a pair of eyes sitting on the CD player.
Not only that, all the paintings and drawings on the walls are done by the owners of the cafe themselves! Aint the calvins & hobbes good?! These fun drawings add some elements of cute-ness in the different areas within the cafe.Even though the main idea of the cafe is their desserts, but to stay competitive with so many other cafes around, they have included some mains such as all day breakfast, pasta and more. Quite an extensive choice of starters, main, desserts and drinks. Prices are reasonable too with no GST and service charge. Drinks price ranging from $3.50 – $5.50, starters around $5-$7, mains around $12-$20 and desserts around $7-$12.
After so much saying of the cafe itself, it’s time for the revelation of food!
Italian Sodas ($4.90): Choice of Kiwi, Passionfruit, Red Raspberry and Blue Raspberry. Italian sodas are one of their popular hits. I’ve gotten the Kiwi Italian Soda. It is one of the recommendations from the owner! Refreshing and no sour note at the aftertaste.
Bacon Surprise ($10.90): One of their starter choices. Consist of 3 bacon wraps topped with scrambled eggs, sunny side up (looks more like an overeasy egg to me though) and butter mushrooms respectively on the muffins. I feel that both the eggs are a lil dry, it will be good if the scrambled egg is more creamy and the yolks of sunny side up is more of golden and runny. Muffin is soft not too hard goes pretty well with the bacon and toppings. The dish came with a side salad drizzled with japanese sesame dressing. Fresh and crunchy salad and the dressing enhance the overall taste. Gives you a very refreshing taste.
Truffle fries ($7.90): One of the best truffle fries that i have tried. The truffle has basically infused into the fries, every single fries i eat, i could taste the truffle. Eat it while it’s hot, and you’ll get to enjoy the outer crisp and inner soft of the fries.
De’ Pop Breakfast Platter for Two ($28.90): It consists of toasted brioche, grilled tomatoes, sauteed mushrooms, streaky bacon, golden hashbrown, scrambled eggs, baked beans and bratwurst sausage. Doesnt this look like a feast! You can try almost a bit of everything from your favourite breakfast menu. I particularly like their sauteed mushrooms. It is very well-flavored. The bacon is not bad too, not oily at all and it’s crispy. Sausage may be a little dry, but not too dry, still can taste the juiciness and meatiness of it. Hashbrown is good! Basically a snack i can just munch on and on. Similar problem with the scrambled egg, i would prefer more creamy and runny scrambled eggs. Anyway, they have breakfast platter for one too, so not to worry if you think you will face problem finishing it!
Crab and the Dog ($15.90): Italian pork sausage served in a bun drizzled with spicy chilli crab sauce and sides of fries and salad. Bun has been slightly toasted, giving it the extra aroma. The pork sausage is a little tiny winy dry i feel. But the spicy chilli crab sauce is really good! I could almost feel the spicy-ness immediately once it’s in my mouth. I enjoy spicy food, so to me this is just ‘Shiok’. It goes pretty well with the sausage and toasted bun.
Black Pepper Crab Spaghetti ($14.90): Spaghetti served with mushroom, tomatoes, crab meat and chef’s specialty black pepper sauce. Strong black peppery taste. It get a little too overwhelming. Pasta is done al dente and chunks of white shredded crabmeat is really fresh. For people who prefer strong taste or in love with black peppery food, this is definitely your choice!
Waffle Caramel ($11.50): Buttermilk waffle top with granola, salted caramel ice cream, caramel sauce and whipped cream. Crispy waffle with soft and fluffy inner. The granola add the extra crunch and healthiness to the overall dessert, hahah! Salted caramel ice cream is good, smooth and creamy, not icy and taste lean towards the sea salt flavor more than caramel flavor.
French toast feat Banana-tella ($11.90): Thick toast with caramelized bananas, drizzle of caramel and a dash of hazelnut. Many cafes tend to serve shibuya toast, but De’Pop culture wants to serve something more unique to the customer, less commonly found in other cafes. The french toast is really good soaked with the eggy taste and caramelized banana that is soft and sweet. To end it on a high note, pair it with the nutella! Deliciously sinful.
Apple Crumble Pie with Vanilla Ice-cream ($7.90): More of a hot savory sweet desserts. Pie is crumbly and of the texture and consistency that i like! Not too soft neither too hard, like crumbly cookie feel. Beneath that crumbly pie crust, are chunks of caramelized apples that are soft and sweet.
