Awfully Delicious
Awfully Chocolate
2010-11-15
My fling with Awfully Chocolate started at East Coast Road and it did not start well. In fact, I hated their original dark chocolate cake. It was way too dry to deserve any credit. I did not understand the hype, see no reason in wasting my calories on a shop which seem too busy with becoming a media darling than to bake a humble chocolate cake. Thus, when it opened another outlet nearer home at Cluny Court, I did not even give it a second look. Until Awfully Chocolate diversified. At first I was cynical. I remembered how principled they used to sound. How chocolate cake should be purely enjoyed on its own, how it should be rich and non-confusing in taste, how there was no need for variety. Blah. Blah. Blah. However, as more outlets sprout out all over the island, I gave in. Weakness of the mind is my greatest weakness. AND. This slow poached chocolate with Bailey Cream is GOOD! The chocolate is dense but not too heavy. The taste of cocoa is distinct. The chocolate can be slightly coarse and smoother texture will make this a perfect dessert. But I can live with it. What's more it came with a generous amount of light cream to break the monotony of eating chocolate. Great dessert I must say. Hmm, I wonder if I should give the original cake another try then?…查看更多

Simply Delicious
Simply Bread
2010-11-12
Simply Bread has a special place in my heart. I love the decor, the food and love chilling out at their charming cafe. One only need to smell their freshly baked bread to feel revitalised. I have always been a great fan of their sticky bun and am sure it will up the satisfaction quotient for any day. Indeed, the bun was sweet but not overtly so. The stickness really lives up to the bun's name. We love the generous amount of cinnamon and it went extremely well with a cup of hot tea. Indeed, most tables in Simply Bread has at least an order of their signature sticky bun. We also had their new filled rolls with just bacon and eggs. I was completely sold by the clean and fresh taste of the simple rolls. Simply Bread never fails to deliver! Yay! …查看更多

It's Really 1 Inch Each
3 Inch Sin
2010-11-12
3 Inch Sin has been around for quite awhile. After a morning walk at Botanic Gardens, we just dropped by before going home. As I am on this perpetual dieting mode, we ordered the mini cakes to try 3 flavours. 3 Inch Sin - the cakes live up to half the eatery's name as the 3 cakes were really 1 inch each. As for the sin, the cakes were too small to give any. The mini molten cakes were simply too small to have any molten chocolate interior. The way-too-frosty vanilla ice-cream was not sinful either. If I ever return to 3 Inch Sin I may just give the actual size a second chance and the ice-cream a miss! …查看更多

Ruyi
2010-11-09
Ruyi is Tung Lok's take on chinese fast food. I like the white and orange decor. I like the fuss free environment to have a quick and cheap meal. I like the very spicy and numbing hot and spicy soup ($3.90) a lot. I like the liberal use of sichuan peppercorn and vinegar in the thick soup. I like the $1 prawn paste chicken wing promotion. I like the distinct taste of the prawn paste seasoning. I dislike the rather cold ruyi fried noodles ($6.20), it will taste much better if the noodles are fried on spot. I dislike the paper and plastic cutlery. But I like the soup so much that I had it on an evening and went back for lunch again the next day. I will go again soon. …查看更多

Yet Another Affordable Tim Sum Buffet
老北京食堂
2010-11-09
Lao Beijing is another Tung Lok's casual dining outlet. I remembered seeing looooong queues outside its plaza sing outlet when their teatime buffet was featured on TV. They do not take reservations so people will start to queue up waaaaay before the buffet starts. Years later, when the hype completely died down, we simply breezed into the restaurant at 3pm sharp. There are items at the side where we can pick or we can order xiao long bao, noodles, pan fried buns with the wait staff. A pretty good tea buffet system! I used to like their ala carte xiaolong bao and was kind of expecting the same quality at the buffet. However, the skin seem to get thicker and thicker towards the end of the buffet I still like xlb's broth, it's as yummy as ever! Their sichuan spicy soup was flavourful and full of sourish and spicy kick! We thoroughly enjoyed the soup. The cold beancurd skin and jelly fish was also delightfully light and delicious. Most Tung Lok outlets serves crunchy and fresh jellyfish. So cannot go wrong with that. Finally, we round up our meal with some refeshing almond jelly. While we simply spend about an hour at Lao Beijing but we had our fill! …查看更多

If You Are Not Too Fussy
店小二
2010-11-08
Dian Xiao Er is a pretty decent place for a simple chinese meal. My mum and I do not mind popping into any of their outlets whenever we chanced upon one. Granted, we will not purposely go and eat at Dian Xiao Er for their signature roasted duck is nothing to scream about. Recently, many of their suburb outlets are having a $10++ lunch promotion (2pm to 5pm) which includes herbal duck, fried vegetables, rice and chinese tea. I decided to give the duck a second chance although I do not agree with their definition of lunchtime! Ok the duck is still way too salty. I suspected the gravy there to hide the lack lustre and lack crispy skin. The meat of the duck kind of stick onto the bones. However, the duo miao was excellent with a good kick of wok-hei. There was ziltch raw taste of the vegetable at all. Really, good duo miao I must say. Dian Xiao Er also use superior quality jasmine rice which went very well with the duck gravy. Ironically, I was happy with my meal but not the duck. Some dishes simply do not deserve a second chance. …查看更多

Have a Quick Quiche!
The Cellar Door
2010-11-08
The Cellar Door has lost its charm on me since its relocation. We love having breakfast at its dark but cosy former outlet. I could wear my glasses, not put on make-up and felt at home. Technically, the new outlet at Vivo is an improvement - bright, airy, cheery and much easier to maneuver in. However, dragging myself to a busy shopping centre is not quite a good start to a lazy weekend. Nevertheless, we still want a quiche behind that cellar door. Thick and creamy egg custard coupled with buttery crust. Packed with fibrous but sweet leeks. The Cellar Door serves one of the best quiche with leeks ($9) in Singapore. Leeks are excellent diuretic, something I always eat when my weighing scale is tipping in the wrong direction. The Cellar Door also whipped up a good flat white ($5). I like how hot, creamy and robust the coffee was but dislike the acidic aftertaste. It was also too foamy for a flat white. But my discerning coffee drinker friend found the acidic taste pleasant. Service was excellent and we were treated like king and queen despite of our pitiful order! Two of us quickly shared everything and scooted. …查看更多

When Japan meets France
KKI
2010-11-06
People these days are much more sophisticated than to be satisfied with just another cake. The thing about French-inspired Japanese bakeries being so successful these days is that they manage to capture a wide food audience. Who can resist the rich and intricate flavours of French desserts coupled with the light and delicate Japanese touch. K-ki cakes are basically art for us to admire but one surely regret if they just look and not eat the cakesK-ki's Antoinette ($8) is like a white chocolate and mango molten lava cake. My friend from UK likes the taste of mango so this ain't exotic to him at all. Me? I always love An. Move over chocolate molten lava cake. The only complaint I have about K-ki is my fave Mont Blanc is forever so difficult to buy. We were told it's an hour wait to Mont Blanc so we ordered the Cafe Dumo ($8) instead. My friend was impressed by the layers of differing texture and taste in this coffee-based cake. To him, the cake scene in Singapore is much more exciting than back home. All thanks to K-Ki. …查看更多

Have a Cake and Eat it!
Flor Patisserie
2010-11-04
We happily headed home with 4 cakes from Flor since the shop space is quite small. Flor's Tahiti (as the name implies) is a happy fusion of pineapple cubes, passionfruit cream and coconut dacquoise. The cake was a bit too tangy at first but soon became rather addictive Flor's BerryBerries ($5.50) is almost as light as air to almost not there. I did not have a good impression of Glace's strawberry souffle and BerryBerries reminded me of it. All of us love the mango pie ($6), I am especially impressed with the flaky pastry and dense almond-laced filling. The mango pie was the sweetest and heaviest amongst everything we tried but it wasn't cloying at all. Flor's Waguri Millefeuille ($6.50) is their version of chestnut cake and closest parallel to Mont Blanc. I enjoyed this more than Glace's Mont Blanc because of the flaky pastry which added a stronger taste of butter. Other than that I still prefer K-ki's chestnut cream and almond base for Mont Blanc. Mont Blanc is classically French and the Japanese's take on this classic French is one of the most important contribution to my cake universe :)…查看更多

Brunching at Artichoke
Artichoke
2010-11-02
We went to Artichoke for lunch only to find a weekend brunch-only menu. The menu is interesting but we settled for a simple scrambled eggs, mushrooms, rocket and brie ($16). I was impressed by the light seasoning that brought out the taste of fresh rockets. The mushrooms were lightly sauteed to draw out their musky fragrance while retaining their form and moisture. Brie added a touch of class and stronger flavour to the eggs and vegetables. Nice, well-executed and clean flavours. I like. The citrus breading pudding we were eyeing was not available yet so we ordered the banana bread ($10). I fell almost immediately for the cream with vanilla bean and it did give a refreshing break between the sweet and dense banana bread. The bread can be a tad sticky in texture but went well with crunchy walnuts. Sad to say, the taste of banana essence was rather distinct and we prefer a more natural taste instead. Nevertheless, the banana bread has done its job of making up for the disappointment in not having my bread pudding. Artichoke on weekends is yet another brunch cafe that looks like a page from the Ikea catalogue. Not to be mistaken, I do like brunch or rather I do like the feeling of having brunch at a nice cafe. An idle mid-morning, wholesome breakfast, comfortable and stylish setting is almost an instant success formula for cafes these days. But somehow I was searching for something more interesting. …查看更多

Sunshine After the Rain
Raindrops Café
2010-11-02
It is not easy to find a decent and affordable cafe even with all the new shopping centres that claimed to be foodcentric along the Orchard Road belt. Isn't it ironic? Raindrops Cafe is a great place at the supposingly youthful but deafening quiet *Scape. It's a ray of sunshine for those seeking a cheap and quick meal. We ordered the Portobello with Chicken ($8) and were totally sold by the beer-battered mushrooms. It was especailly tasty when eaten hot! My only gripe was the pseudo balsamic vinegar tasted too sweet. It was similar to black sweet sauce and very unliked vinegar. Chicken Leg Lemongrass with Pumpkin Risotto ($16). I love the Thai-influenced dish and the lemongrass marinate was delicately obvious. The chicken was akin to a huge portion of satay but much more delcious as very tender thigh was used.Crispy Salmon with Asparagus( $17). Sadly, the fish could be fresher but grilled vegetables were well-done. However, the portion was huge so it is good for healthy but hearty eaters! Mascarpone Mousse ($9) is actually just Tiramisu. It is not the best in town but good enough to round off a meal! …查看更多

Fine Grub!
Angelo's
2010-11-02
Pub grub ranges from hearty portions of pastas, pizzas to deep-fried finger food. I have a thing for pub grub and prefer an evening getting my fingers dirty in a pub rather than battling with cutlery at a restaurant anytime. I find the former relaxing and latter restricting. It was sheer happiness to find that we can order from Angelo's restaurant menu at the adjacent bar. Their caprese was quite different from what I am used to. Firstly, mozzarella and not buffalo mozzarella is used to create a firmer bite. Moreover, pesto instead of balsamic vinegar was used as dressing. If I were to have my way, I will want my caprese with buffalo mozzarella and pesto. Chilli Mussels with tomato-based sauce was jazzed up with just the right amount of sourish tinge. Somehow the tart and sharp quality of it was great with seafood. Onions were just cooked to release some sweetness but its pungency remained. The onions were still crunchy and mussels tender. Excellent. Penne Alfredo is probably the best I ever have in Singapore, totally al dente but flavourful. Bite into ONE penne and the alfredo sauce just burst in the mouth. Ha ha, this was so fun to eat! No other pasta can capture the beauty of this dish better than penne. Alfredo was rich in taste. The amount of salt, garlic and cream used were perfect. Love the well-balanced pasta. Blueberry Cheesecake may sounds boring. But the cake was good. The current Michaelangelo's is quite weak in their desserts but this is not the case with Angelo's cheesecake. While the acidic orange sauce over-wrote the richness of the cream cheese and I can finish the entire slice by myself. But as people always say desserts are best enjoyed when it's shared.…查看更多

It Has Moved!
Iggy's
2010-10-23
Hi Openricers! Iggy's has moved to Hilton. Sometime in August I have a sudden craving for Iggy's and was told by the person behind the reservation line that the restaurant will closed for the next 2 weeks for revonation. Undaunted and encouraged by a good friend's photos, I flew to Hilton the moment I have the chance to try out its new menu (at a new pricing)!Iggy's recently top the Miele Guide again and like all good restaurants. Their food tasted clean and nicely layered. I shall not attempt to describe too much lest I cannot do justice to it!Our fave is the pork with paprika. We both like the nicely charred pork belly spiced up with paprika. Cappellini is Iggy's signature, I love it too. The pasta with scampi oil was simply sublime. Both desserts were were executed and I love how delicate the white chocolate and elderflower tasted. …查看更多

Beautiful.Bistro.Bar
Pamplemousse Bistro & Bar
2010-10-21
Pamplemousse is just my kind of place; the intricate details, the whiteness, the Renoir wallpaper and the mixture of highly ornamented corners with sharp clean lines. I like everything about their decor. And the food is good, not mind-blowingly good but good. Normal good is good. Citrus marinated salmon ( with Pamplemousse Confit, Saikyo Miso Aioli, Croutons) was not fishy even for one with low tolerance of fishiness. Citrus seasoning and the pamplemousse confit (grapefruit) went well with salmon. I like the salty side of the fish too. It was also quite a big serving for an appetiser. We all agreed their prawns with mustard was the best appetiser amongst all. The prawns were succulent without artifically so. The bacon wrap was crispy. The sharpness of mustard and scent of parsley tasted great together. Chicken Roulade (with Succotash, Quail Egg, Chicken Jus) can be ordered as a main course as well. The fried quail egg was so so cute. Chicken was very tender and the taste of smoke was distinct without being overpowering. Butter Poached Barramundi (with Nasu Eggplant, Hiratake Mushroom, Lemongrass and Saffron Broth). I should have taken a photo of the waiter pouring the hot broth over and somehow did not. I am not into barramundi as I never like soft and mushy fish. Duck Confit (with Braised Red Cabbage, Pomme Sarladaise, Lychee Gastrique) tasted rather heavy (like soft yet texturised beef) but the pairing of red cabbage and lychee was divine. Oh sea salt and crispy duck skin with soft and tender fats were quite a lethal combination! Uni Tagliolini (with Crustacean Cream Sauce, Pork Gratons, Nori, Chives) was a super heavy and rich pasta hence it came in small package too! Really love the presentation of the tagliolini! Very posh. For desserts we had Sticky Date Pudding (with Saffron Butterscotch Sauce, Walnut Ice-cream), Panna Cotta (with Red Bean Jelly, Lotus Cream, Mooncake Crumble, Pandan Frozen Yoghurt) and Osmanthus Creme Brulee (with Lychee Sorbet) I concentrated on my creme brulee and ignore the other 2 desserts. This was a rather dense creme brulee. Neither was the custard silky smooth. Somehow I enjoyed it very much. Usually sweet and sweet cancel out each other. When one put 2 different sweets together, it confuses the palate. I was pleasantly surprised how distinct the creme brulee and lychee sorbet tasted when eaten simultaneouly. And their opposing sweetness, texture and temperature went together harmoniously. With all these good food and great decor, a 3-course lunch at Pamplemousse comes at a price of just $32++. Why aren't people raving about this place yet?! …查看更多

Sweet Salty Spicy
Café Epicurious
2010-09-07
I titled this post Sweet Salty Spicy simply because I went to Cafe Epicurious for S3's Thai food :) The 2 eateries are interlink so we can sit anywhere and order anything from 2 menus. Anyway, both places dish out very affordable ten buck lunch on weekdays - probably one of the worst kept secret in the foodies' world. I am happy with the pricing and ecstatic that I get to eat both western and thai together! As a fried food lover I somehow love fresh rice rolls ($2.50, extra order) rather than their fried counterparts. It's probably because the taste of mint and coriander can be more distinct in fresh rolls. We like the refreshing feel of the rolls filled with crunchy bean sprouts. However, rice roll at S3 is midget rice roll and I can pop 2 or 3 together into my mouth all at once. Whatever goodness of the healthy rice roll was quickly compensate or rather negate by our order of Thai Red Curry with Pork Belly. I love love love this so much that I bought their red curry paste home, unable to replicate its taste then went back to S3 the following week. The pork belly was crisp, tender and well marinated. There was about 50% fats and 50% meat for each slice. Totally high quality fried pork I will say. The curry was rich, fragrant and full of complex flavours. It went perfectly well with thai jasmine rice. I ordered the Angel Hair with Mushroom and was told to choose from non-spicy, spicy and extremely spicy. Of course, I went for the highest level. It was yummy but not that memorable. Perhaps, the red curry overshadowed everything else that day. Nevertheless, it's a simple and good pasta to try if you like yours perfectly al dente. Do order the iced lemongrass tea no matter how exotic it sounds. The taste of lemongrass was strong enough to excite my tastebuds but not too overwhelming. A and I end up fighting over the lemongrass tea and neglected the boring iced lemon tea. If only the Green Tea Cup Cake tasted as good as its looks. It was very, very dry. Desserts are the weakest part of the 10 buck lunch and are limited in choices. I am happy with the mains for the 10 buck lunch and A does not has a sweet tongue. If you happen to be a dessert person, go for the $18++ set instead, there are more choices for both mains and desserts. As for me, I am happy enough with my red curry. …查看更多
