Thai food
ThaiExpress
2010-07-31
Dinner at Thai Express was a casual and quick affair. There were very few diners at that time, but staff were not attentive and attempts to capture their attentions were useless.I tend to eat at Thai Express if I have the craving for my fave thai dessert - Red water chestnut bits, served with crushed ice, in coconut milk. Another Thai restaurant chain, Lerk Thai, served this dessert as equally good. :)Appetizer was this small little tower, stacked up neatly with veggies, mango pieces and prawns, with peanuts on top. I liked how neat it looked, and it looked like a dish that was presented in a way/standard that a Thai fine dining restaurant probably would. :)I had the Chicken Pad Thai. It is a popular and common Thai noodle dish that can't go wrong. Cos if there's something un-delicious about Pad Thai, the chef of whichever food establishment ought to be given a good lecture or to be shown to the door. The pad thai was nice, but certainly not the best pad thai I have ever tasted in Singapore. My friend had the Black Pepper Chicken Rice. I guessed the cook was rather over-generous with the amount of black pepper that he or she used. It seemed to cover up the taste of the chicken meat and I couldn't really make out how yummy the chicken was when I did a small tasting of the meat.…查看更多

10% off when you dine on the day of your birthday
Fish & Co.
2010-07-31
A small birthday dinner with 3 other people. We chose this place as it was near my aunt's work place. Whats more, there's a 10% discount if any of the diner's birthday falls on that day. And best thing is, one need not be a Fish & Co member to enjoy that 10% discount.Other than ordering mains for each of ourselves, we shared the premium seafood feast platter. The platter consists of pieces of grilled white fish, prawn fritters, grilled normal-sized prawns, baked king prawns, baked scallops, mussels with garlic butter (super yummy!!!) and fried calamari. This platter is sufficient for 3 to 4 people, I would say. So you can imagine how full we all were, after the meal! I had the baked ginza salmon, which is a piece of baked salmon fillet, served with futaba seasoning mix. I like the fresh salmon meat and it was baked perfectly! :)As this meal was for a birthday celebration, the birthday person was surprised in a loud way. The staff gathered and presented a sparkler stick to the birthday person and sang a Birthday song loudly and with much enthusiam. They held on to a small piece of cake whioe singing that song and clapping away. At the end of the song, they took a polaroid shot and presented the polaroid photo with handwritten birthday wishes to the birthday person. On the same evening, there were 3 other birthday celebrations going on, yet the staff were not tired of doing the same birthday song and all for 4 times! By the way, Fish & Co doesn't serve alcohol, as we actually wanted to order that... So after the meal, we proceeded to a nearby pub in East Coast. And I also signed up for a Fish & Co member. Not that I dine at this place often.... In fact, it must have been more than a year ago since I dined there. But the member perks were quite attractive that I simply signed up. Anyway, the amount I paid for the membership would be 'given back' to me, in terms of vouchers.. So why not? :)…查看更多

Casual dining over the causeway
Secret Recipe
2010-07-31
Went for lunch on a weekday afternoon. The service was prompt with attentive staff. The cushion seats were rather dirty, with visible stains and signs of old age. If only the management plans to do some cushion upholstery, it will be great. My dining partner had the Beef Bistro for his mains. It is a chunk of beef shin, stewed with Secret Recipe's own brown sauce. He commented that the meat was rather hard. and it must have been not that nice to eat, as he chose not to finish his food (usually he doesn't do that). Well, for me, I felt that it tasted like those small little chunks of meat in those tin cans. Sheesh.I had pan-grilled fish. It comes servied with french fries and some veggies. It was served with homemade lobster sauce. The fish meat was soft and tasted nice, matches very well with the sauce. We each ordered the set lunch. Other than the main course, it comes with a bowl of soup and a drink of our choice. The set meal also comes with tapioca chips, which was rather tasteless. Not sure if the promo is only temporary or what, but it was certainly value for money for a casual lunch. :)…查看更多

Always a nice place for coffee~
TCC - The Connoisseur Concerto
2010-07-28
It has been quite awhile since I went to TCC. My latest trip to this outlet had me to discover that they had changed the menu few days ago. I was quite disappointed when I realised that Beef Mozza Tofu was taken out from the menu. This snack was a super yummilicious dish!!!!For drinks, I ordered the Luscious Bonding iced coffee. A generous serving of caramel was added into the tall glass of latte. As much as I love MacDonald's Apple Dippers and KOI's Caramel Milk Tea cos they both comes with my favourite caramel, it was quite a turn-off when I couldn't taste the caramel in the Luscious Bonding, after mixing it well with the latte. My meal partner ordered the Pan-seared Chicken Breast with Shogayaki Sauce. The food was presented stylishly and I love love loveeeee the shogayaki sauce (You must try it!). It was my first time tasting this sauce, its rather sweet and really unique. I helped myself to the sauce, matching it with my own food that I ordered. Hee.For myself, my main course was the Baked Chicken Thigh with Wholegrain Mustard Sauce. The chicken meat was soft and tender. I usually not eat the chicken skin, but this skin was delicious that I eat all of 'em! The mini potatoes (and its skin) were so cute that I ate it all. I preferred the shogayaki sauce from my partner's dish, but I preferred my chicken. If only both can be combined, it would be a luscious bonding (name inspired by the Luscious Bonding coffee that I ordered. Hee!)!The service was good, and the staff was attentive. I liked the dim lighting of this place, which makes it nice for a close intimate simple date. :)(This post can also be found at: http://felizaong.blogspot.com/2010/07/dinner-at-tcc.html)…查看更多

Could Have Been Better...
Penang Culture
2010-07-21
Gurney Drive is a popular seafront promenade which is also one of Penang's most popular tourist destination. It was also the place for yummy Penang hawker food, before the hawker stalls were being relocated to a nearby location. Guess what.... It seems that Gurney Drive has arrived in Singapore!Located in Ang Mo Kio Central, on the first level of the Jubilee Entertainment Complex, I spotted this new food establishment - Gurney Drive. And you guessed it right, its name was inspired by Penang's Gurney Drive. As I have never been to Penang, nor tasted Penang food, I decided to have my dinner at this place with Bbb.For drinks, I ordered the Ampla drink, as the menu stated that this drink contains antioxidants. This is due to the freshly squeezed juice from the "buay long long" fruit. The drink was served with crushed ice, with a sour plum fruit added on top of it. Although the server mentioned that the drink is quite sour, I didn't know it was THAT sour! Ok, it was not that sour for the first few sips. But the more I drank it, I couldn't take the sourness... Too sour that I had to exchange my drink with bbb's.Well, actually I got him to order the bandung with chin chow drink. It was meant to be my 'backup' drink, should the Ampla drink was too sour for me (and indeed it was). Despite drinking bundang drinks for umpteen times in my life, I have not tried bandung with chin chow. It was not diluted and I liked the unique mix of bandung and chin chow. 'Chin Chow' is grass jelly, by the way.For our side dish, we ordered the Penang Lor Bak. The pork meat is wrapped with super thin beancurd skin. It reminded me of ngoh hiang. There were also the tofu servings, along with cucumbers. This dish came along with 2 sauces - Chopped chillies with black sauce and some sweet sour spicy sauce (something like the Thai chilli sauce, or maybe it was that). This is one of the restaurant's signature dishes. I like the tenderness of the meat and its unique taste... Anyone who dines here should try this dish out. :)Bbb had the Mee Goreng, which I really had no idea why he would order that. How special could it be anyway? (-_-) Indeed, it was nothing fantastic. It was simply a plate of stir-fried yellow noodles, with prawns, squids, fish cake, bean sprouts and tomatoes added in it, which was simply a plate of overpriced mee goreng.I ordered the Gurney Thai Apple Chicken Rice for myself. It is supposedly a recipe by the Gurney Drive's chef. This dish contains of thai-style infusing apple shreds and crispy fried chicken slices which were served along the oily rice, with a special homemade sauce to complete it.Apparently, my rice was too hard to be consumed, and I requested for a change. I was then asked if it is ok to have the coconut rice as they were afraid that the oily rice in the rice pot might still be too hard for me. I'm not wearing dentures... so if the rice was hard, it was INDEED hard. I had no choice but to have coconut rice. Since I felt that it was really unhealthy to be consuming one whole chunk of the coconut rice, I did not finish it.Other than the rice, I would say that the chicken slices were tasty and I liked the homemade sauce. The sauce blended well with the apple shreds and chicken slices, which also brought out the chicken flavor. Perhaps I would like this dish a little bit more, if only I had the oily rice to go along with it.The staff had good product knowledge of the food they offered and was able to provide recommendations for us aka first-time diners at Gurney Drive. However, the food took quite awhile to arrive. If I was eating at the hawker stalls in Penang's Gurney Drive, I wouldn't mind if there were houseflies around me... But to encounter a constant housefly problem throughout my meal in this air-conditioned restaurant was certainly very unpleasant. :(Honestly, I would say you can give this restaurant a try if you had not tasted Penang food before. But I believe there are other places in Singapore that offer Penang cuisines too. Now, I just wanna head to the Gurney Drive hawker stalls in Penang.
