I chose the Hot Smoked Salmon ($19) since I was always a fan of smoked salmon. The Hot Smoked Salmon came with oak smoked salmon, poached eggs, spinach, hollandaise sauce and English muffins. Also ordered a orange juice to wash the meal down. I liked the poached eggs but that was the only thing I truly fancied in my Hot Smoked Salmon. I was quite surprised that the smoked salmon came as shreds of fully cooked salmon. I expected salmon which was cured and smoked instead of fully cooked salmon. The spinach was really salty which took me by surprise. The greens were fresh but nothing too special.I will come by Oriole Cafe for brunch again if I want somewhere in town which is less crowded. But I will not visit Oriole Cafe for my smoked salmon fix. There are many other cafes serving better smoked salmon and poached egg.…查看更多

Fantastic Roasted Pork Cheek

The Roasted Pork Cheek ($19.90) with a bowl of ramen was apparently a popular dish so I decided to go with that the other day. Indeed, the slices of Roasted Pork Cheek were lean and yet so very tender. There was no fatty meat at all yet it tasted so soft and delicious. They were very well braised and I loved the flavour in the meat. You could choose the soup base - shoyu (soya sauce), shio (salt), or miso. I took shoyu because I wanted to try something different from my usual shio. Shoyu was definitely more salty than shio and I think I would stick with shio the next time I come around.So the next time I came I ordered the Char Siu Ramen ($17.70). We both opted for Shio Ramen this time. The slices of char siu were definitely more fatty and marbly as compared to the Roasted Pork Cheek. The char siu was still delicious and well-braised but you would not fancy it if you did not like fatty meat. I am not much of a fan of fatty meat so I would prefer the Roasted Pork Cheek. As more foodies tasted Jamie’s Italian and more reviews began streaming into the Internet, I was deterred by the lukewarm reviews that seemed to suggest that I was better off spending my calories and money somewhere else. Still, something about the place (perhaps it is the lack of a queue) caught my attention that Saturday, and I pulled my boyfriend in for dinner.The place is dimly lit, with nice relaxing music in the background, and a comfortably laid back vibe. The boyfriend commented that it felt like Potato Head in Bali and I completely agree. Jamie’s Italian made me feel like I was no longer in Singapore which was good for a moment. I ordered the Prawn Linguine while the boyfriend took the Lamp Chop Lollipop. The food was truly mediocre. My Prawn Linguine was done al dente which was good, but the linguine did not absorb the watery tomato sauce and tasted quite bland. The prawns were really small and not fresh. Cannot resist $3 salmon sashimi and $5 umeshu!This was our first order of 20 slices of salmon sashimi. After finishing this plate, we proceeded to order another 15 slices. When we were done with all our salmon sashimi, I felt like there were many slices of raw fish swimming around in my belly. The salmon sashimi was good and fresh. The cuts were thick and juicy, just the way I like it.We could not possibly only have salmon sashimi for dinner so we decided to order a hand roll. We had one of their specialty rolls, the Rockstar Roll, which was basically a roll with pan-seared salmon. It was delicious! I am always fond of pan-seared salmon and did not really care that this was truly an overdose of salmon. This dinner at Standing Sushi Bar was filled with raw and cooked salmon, and nothing else. Tanuki Raw's daily Happy Hour is definitely one of the best Happy Hours I've ever been to. From 5pm to 8pm everyday, you could enjoy $10 martini, $2 for freshly shucked raw oysters (limited to 6 oysters per drink), and $5 for 5 slices of salmon sashimi (limited to 1 portion per drink). My friend made the extra effort to come by Tanuki Raw by 6 pm on a Friday to snag a table for us. Once everybody reached by 7pm, we began feasting on raw oysters and salmon sashimi.The oysters were so fresh! They were extremely delicious with lemon and tobasco. The sweet freshness oozing out of the juicy oysters was just so awesome.The salmon sashimi slices were thick and juicy. They were also very fresh and sweet. However, the place is really crowded during lunch hours and we were lucky to find an empty table when we arrived.The side dishes were amazing! I am especially addicted to their seaweed egg roll and sauteed broccoli. Just looking at these pictures now make me want to return to Seoulria for lunch soon. The seaweed egg roll was simple yet so delicious! I think we asked for about 4 servings of the seaweed egg roll. It was that yummy. The mashed potato was awesome as well.My Kimchi Soup. Spicy, sour, and very delicious. Unlike the food court version with a watery soup base and limp kimchi, the kimchi soup at Seoulria was thick with flavour. It was super yummy! Prices were reasonable too for the number of courses and the quality of food served. I ordered the Sake Teriyaki (Salmon Teriyaki) which was $16.80.The salmon sashimi was pretty awesome. The slices were thick, fresh, and juicy. I love the sweetness oozing out of the fresh salmon sashimi slices.The salmon teriyaki was pretty good. Nicely grilled with a delicious crispy skin. However, the salmon was slightly overcooked which caused it to be a bit dry and tough. It lacked the juicy texture of perfectly grilled salmon.I ordered Yuzu Sorbet as dessert which was refreshingly sweet. I love Yuzu! The burger was kind of small, but it was packed with awesomeness. The melted cheese with slices of pulled pork went very well with the soft bun. I also liked the potato salad that came with the burger. Very tangy and refreshing.My only grouse is that the burger was served kind of cold. My pet peeve is lukewarm food and sadly, the burger at Two Blur Guys triggered this pet peeve.I liked the burgers at Two Blur Guys but I don't think the burgers are anything worth writing home about. We chose miso, wine, garlic, and smoked pork.The seafood stew was large! The soup base in 8 Korean BBQ Restaurant was milder, less robust, and without the sweetness of fresh seafood.The BBQ pork belly was another thing altogether. They were marvelous. The waitress set out the thick slices of pork belly on the grill and doled out large portions of kimchi and beansprouts beside them. She proceeded to grill the pork for us patiently, flipping them around and making sure that they were grilled evenly to crispy juicy slices.Once the pork belly was ready, she cut them into smaller slices and arranged them neatly into 4 neat piles. The kimchi and beansprouts were also nicely heated up by that time. I have to say, the kimchi at 8 Korean BBQ was delicious. It was the most yummy, fragrant, and crunchy kimchi I've ever tasted. The pork belly was fantastic too. Slices of thick juicy cuts, extremely well-marinated, and grilled to perfection. I am particularly fond of the garlic flavour because it was the tastiest and most fragrant marination of the 4 types we ordered.The marination was definitely good at 8 Korean BBQ Restaurant. The flavour was fully absorbed in all slices and the meat was incredibly tasty. Service was excellent and the waitress made a good effort to ensure that our slices of pork belly were evenly grilled. We were mostly eating plain yellow rice.The phad thai was pretty tasty and sweet, but sadly, it was also way too wet. I do prefer the phad thai to the pineapple fried rice though.The clear tomyam soup was very spicy, but sadly not too fragrant. The pot was filled with seafood though and it was a very hearty pot of tomyum soup. Sadly, not the best tomyum I've tried before.The oyster egg was not too good. The egg was not crisp and turned out really lumpy. The egg was also really bland and tasteless.The steamed fish was one of the better dishes. The fish was soft, fresh and absorbed the sauce nicely. Pasta Brava was extremely crowded for a weekday night. Reservations are strongly recommended if you are intending to have dinner at Pasta Brava.The Eggplant Parmagiana was heavenly. Deliciously fragrant, soft, and coated perfectly with the right amount of melted cheese. It went perfectly with the rocket leaves and was a fantastic starter. I've always liked Eggplant Parmagiana but this was definitely one of the better ones so far. The Vongole Spaghetti was done al dente, nice and springy, with a very generous amount of clams. The clams were fresh, juicy and so yummy. My only grouse was that the Vongole Spaghetti was, for some reason, served cold. It was not hot or warm, but really cooled. The Squid Ink Seafood Risotto might not look much since it seems all black and gooey in the lousy picture below but it was very good. The dish was served piping hot (yay!) with thick squid ink, fresh juicy seafood, and well-cooked risotto. Cantonese congee is always smooth and creamy unlike their Teochew counterparts and that is how I like my congee. However, this bowl was served cold (my pet peeve) so I was rather disappointed. I like my food piping hot.Nice juicy prawns wrapped in thin "skin". This prawn dumplings were good. The prawns were crunchy and the skin was so thin it was almost non-existent.Shrimp rolls wrapped in bean curd skin. This is my ultimate favourite dim sum dish. Few dim sum restaurants have this so I'm always very happy to find it. The shrimp rolls absorbed the delicious sauce and was really tasty.Deep fried shrimp rolls in bean curd skin. Oh I loved this too! Nicely crispy, juicy shrimp, and delicious filling. These rolls were served right out of the wok and piping hot!This was the ultimate highlight.
