Cafe hunt: Refuel Cafe
Refuel
2014-10-22
Refuel cafe is one the latest addition to the every growing list of cafes in Singapore. Located at Bedok Reservoir, the cafe's theme revolves around petrol, car and the likes. Decor is kept minimal with earthy tones like grey and brown, and the long glass window panes allow natural sunlight to stream in.The Latte Mocha and Hazelnut Latte ($5.80 each) was quite mild. Probably cos we ordered the flavoured coffee, I felt that they were kinda sweet and have masked the taste of the coffee itself. I expected better coffee as they are priced relatively higher here. The food on the other hand was surprisingly good. We ordered the Banana Pancakes ($8.90) and Pulled Pork Burger ($12.90) for sharing. The Banana Pancakes came in 3 thin slices and scrambled eggs (supposedly with salad too but we changed it for more eggs). I liked the pancakes as they were light and fluffy, with the fragrance and sweetness from the banana mash inside. The scrambled eggs were not bad too, quite soft and creamy though it could do with more seasoning. Though the portion looks small, it's surprisingly quite filling (you'll wanna leave space for coffee and desserts too right? ;) )The Pulled Pork Burger was excellent! The lighted toasted bun with a generous filling of shredded pulled pork mixed with bbq sauce and lemonly slaw. The ingredients were fresh and veg were very crunchy. The portion is really filling too.Prices here are nett with no GST and service charge. Very value for money! This is definitely one cafe of late to look out for. I already can't wait to go back and try their other items especially their pasta!Rate: 4.5/5Refuel CafeBlock 744 Bedok Reservoir Road #01-3029Singapore 470744Operating hoursMon - Sun: 11am to 10pm(closed on Tues)…查看更多

Cafe hunt: De'Pop Culture
De'Pop Culture
2014-10-19
More and more cafes opening in Singapore recently and there's one that stands out, literally. De'Pop Culture is a new cafe at the Bugis area, specializing in desserts. The owner, Adeline, loves home baking and wants to share her love of food with everyone, hence, opened this cafe called De'Pop Culture, with De representing desserts and pop culture referring to the pop art theme of the cafe. She hopes the bright colours will instantly brighten up one's mood when they step into the cafe.We were served an array of items, from sides to breakfast items to main courses, and finally ending off the meal with some desserts!Italian sodas ($4.90 each)Bacon Surprise ($10.90)The Bacon Surprise came in 3 bacon cups, topped with mushrooms, scrambled eggs and a sunny side up. Personally find that there was nothing special about this; bacon were not crispy, sunny side up was not runny, scrambled eggs were so mashed it felt more like egg mayo.Truffle Fries ($7.90)The truffle fries which was served next was not bad. Hot and crispy with a hint of truffle taste and topped with some cheese shavings. Wished the truffle taste was stronger though.De'Pop Breakfast Platter for 2 ($28.90) The breakfast platter came in a hugeeeee lazy susan. Consisting of scrambled eggs, bacons, mushrooms, baked beans, salad, sausages and hashbrown, it will definitely fill you to the brim. I love the crispy hashbrown and sausages. Salad was also light and refreshing. The scrambled eggs and mushrooms were the same as those on Bacon Surprise which I thought was pretty mediocre.Crab and the Dog ($15.90)Next comes the Crab and the Dog - hot dog bun served with chilli crab sauce. A smart incorporation of Singaporean flavours into traditional western items. The chilli crab sauce was spicy and damn shiok! I didn't quite like the choice of bun they used and would have much preferred a fluffier and softer bun. Nonetheless, one of the better dish I tried that night!Black Pepper Crab Spaghetti ($14.90)Here comes my favourite dish! The Black Pepper Crab Spaghetti consists of Spaghetti in black pepper sauce, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes and topped with real crab meat. I could totally have the whole plate on my own. The black pepper sauce was super strong and spicy, coating every strand of the spaghetti. There was still an after tingling taste! As De'Pop Culture prides itself in its dessert offerings, I was excited to try out the desserts even though I was filled to the brim after trying so many dishes.French Toast feat. Banana-tella ($11.90) and Waffles Caramel ($11.50)Was told that one of the more popular items is the Banana French Toast with nutella. Honestly, I was disappointed when I had it as I had set my expectations high for it. The french toast felt like it was made using some ordinary Gardenia bread and was not fluffy enough. Was also hoping that the bananas were more heavily caramelized but they were not.The waffles were crispy on the outside but too dense inside that it felt slightly uncooked. Love the idea of serving waffles with granola though, it gives the dessert an extra bite. My fellow dining companions were raving about the ice cream but I felt it was not creamy enough. I prefer my ice cream to be thick and creamy but this was more on the watery side.Apple Crumble Pie with ice cream ($7.90)Panna Cotta ($6.90)Would definitely recommend you to try their Apple Crumble and Panna Cotta if you are heading there though. My favourite was the Panna Cotta which was smooth and creamy. I'm usually not a fan of apple crumble but this was good; crumbly on top but moist and soft inside.Overall, the food here is not bad though there was nothing really outstanding. I would say it's still worth a try if you are around the area. Adeline runs the cafe on her own together with a friend, juggling both inside and outside. So do give her some support as I can see how much effort she puts into her cafe and her passion to serve good food and desserts to everyone! For more food reviews, please visit shirlynnyang.blogspot.com…查看更多

Cafe hunt: La Ristrettos
La Ristrettos Coffee Roastery
2014-10-06
I have been meaning to try out this cafe at Novena, hidden amongst the medical offices at Novena Medical Center. This is definitely the last place you'll expect a cafe to be opened here, a good one no less. La Ristrettos is a hole-in-a-wall cafe, with an indoor seating capacity of approx 15-20 pax. There is plenty of outdoor seats at their patio though. My sis and I ordered a Tostino E Arrosto ($10) and a Croissant Al Cotto ($9) to share. The former is a toasted sour dough with garlic olive oil, spinach, roast chicken breast, tomato, ricotta cheese and poached egg, while the latter is toasted croissant with leg ham and swiss cheese. We also added scrambled eggs for an extra cost of $2. Both dishes were executed really well. The chicken breast wasn't dry and tough, instead it was marinated really well and tasted good on its own. The poached egg was also done perfectly; the egg yolk oozes out the moment the knife slits across it.It was an absolutely right choice to add the scrambled eggs to the croissant we ordered. Though I would prefer the eggs to be slightly more milky and runny, it was the perfect combination with the ham and cheese.I also liked the Iced Mocha ($6.50) which I ordered as it was pretty strong and definitely helps in keeping me alert for the day. The Mango Fragole ($6.50) on the other hand was too rich for my liking.Tostino E Arrosto ($10) - Toasted Sour Dough with Garlic Olive Oil, Spinach, Roast Chicken Breast, Tomato, Ricotta Cheese and Poached EggCroissant Al Cotto ($9) - Toasted Croissant with Leg Ham and Cheese, served with salad. Top up $2 for scrambled eggsThe food here totally surpassed my expectation and I will definitely be back again to try their other items, especially the lunch menu (was drooling when I saw the pastas being served to the other customers)!Rate: 4/5For full review and photos, please visit shirlynnyang.blogspot.com…查看更多

Morganfield's [PLUS GIVEAWAY]
Morganfield's
2014-09-26
Listen up, meat lovers! Morganfield's Singapore have opened a new outlet at Suntec City, right beside Promenade MRT! Morganfield's takes after the usual American Diner setting, using mainly black and red in their decor. The spacious outlet is a great place for a bunch of friends to gather and chomp down some ribs while catching up with each other over some beers!Started the dinner with some Candied Bacon ($8.90), which were a mixture of sweet and savoury, with a dash of cinnamon powder on top. They tasted so much like bak kwa and as with all bak kwa, you can't simply stop at one!The Bacon Wrapped Prawns ($15.90) were served next. Unfortunately, it did not taste as good as it looks. Was expecting some crispy bacon wrapping the succulent prawns but it didn't turn out that way. Some Caesar Salad ($12.90) for those who want to act healthy are health conscious? Seriously, if you are at a ribs joint, just go straight for the meat! This got to be one of my favourite dish that night! These Pop Corn Pork ($8.90) would give KFC a run for their money. So crispy and addictive! Tastes soo good on its own even without the homemade garlic aioli and BBQ ranch sauce on the side! The Russet Potato Skin ($9.90) was sadly not as crispy as I wished for it to be. Imagine when you see a dish and you are already visualizing how that first bite will be....crispy, crunchy, savoury.....but when you bite it, it's like *BAM! wake up from your dream*. That was exactly how I felt when I had these potato skins :( Nobody leaves Morganfield's without trying their ribs! It's like having salad at McDonald's (I can never understand that). We tried The Carnivore ($95.90) which consists of a full slab of sticky bones (we were served half slab), half roast chicken, grilled sausages, grilled corn on cob, corn bread and fries! This can easily feed up to 6 people cos the portion is HUGE. For those of you who just want to try the ribs, go for the half slab ($26.90). There's a choice of Garlic BBQ, Smoke Peppercorn, Tuscan Baked Spicy, Hickory BBQ and Spicy Asian BBQ. The ribs were well marinated and flavourful. The meat was pretty tender and could be easily detached from the bone. You don't have to use your hands at all but eating with your hands always make the food taste better, no?The Bread Pudding ($9.90) and the Chocolate Lava Cake ($14.90) was a perfect end to our dinner. I was filled to the brim from all the savoury food but I just couldn't resist the desserts! I liked that both desserts were not overly sweet and the chocolate lava cake was sooo good! If you do visit, remember to leave some space for desserts!Word has it that Morganfield's is having a 1-for-1 half slab promotion till the end of September at the Suntec City Outlet. They also hold regular promotions like $9.90 set lunch on weekdays which is really value for money. Go try it if you haven't!Morganfield's SingaporeThe Star Vista#02-23Suntec City Tower 4#01-645Special thanks to Juliana for the invite*****Thank you to the kind folks at Morganfield's, I am giving away 2 x $50 vouchers to my readers! :) Simply follow the steps below to participate in the giveaway!1) Like Morganfield's Facebook page/follow their instagram profile (@morganfieldssingapore)2) Follow me on instagram @shirlynnyang3) Comment on this blog post why you wish to win. Pince & Pints
Pince & Pints
2014-09-21
As part of my 3-days long birthday celebration (actually it's just an excuse for me to eat ), I finally paid Pince & Pints a visit! This joint that specializes in lobster is all over my instagram and facebook accounts! Serving only lobster and nothing else, they must have done something good to attract people from all over Singapore flocking over to Duxton Hill for some lobster fix.Lobsters here are served in 4 ways - steamed, grilled, as a lobster roll, and as chili lobster. They all weigh 600g approximately and are priced at $48++. My sis and I ordered the lobster roll and chili lobster to share, and also an omakase styled drink ($8-$12).Lobster roll with Mesclun Salad, Sour Cherry & Balsamic Dressing, Shoestring FriesMy lobster roll consists of whole chunks of lobster meat served in a crispy buttered bun. The lobster meat is lightly tossed in mayonnaise, and sits comfortably on the crispy yet fluffy bun. The lobster meat was undoubtedly fresh, but could do with more flavour. The fries on the side were soggy and disappointing. I had expected more from a $48++ dish. The chili lobster, on the other hand, was a tad too salty. I would have preferred it to be spicier but I guess they have deliberately made it milder so that the freshness of the lobster could stand out. The lobster meat again was fresh and succulent. The man tous were fried to perfection and were the perfect match with the chilli gravy. As a whole, I think the lobsters were executed pretty well, and some fine tuning would make it perfect. The decor of the place is kept simple, with black, white and red tones. The space however was extremely small and cramp. The table was small, and if you were to order the chili lobster like me, the huge claypot would have taken up half the table. The cramped place was quite stuffy, making the dining experience a bit unpleasant. If you wish to indulge in a good meal, this place is still worth a try. Go before 6pm or be prepared to queue. For full review and photos, please visit shirlynnyang.blogspot.com…查看更多

Kin Kin Pan Mee
建记
2014-09-21
With much anticipation, Kin Kin Pan Mee opened a few months back in Singapore. For those who don't know, Kin Kin Pan Mee originated from KL and is famous for it's dry pan mee. I went on a Saturday when it first opened and there was no queue - the shop was almost empty! But soon after my visit, I heard that people have to queue for hours to have a bowl of their pan mee.To be honest, I felt that the pan mee was very ordinary. It tastes good when everything is mixed together, but I definitely would not queue hours for it. I don't even think I would queue anything more than 15 minutes for it. The dry pan mee was served with crunchy ikan bilis, minced meat and fried shallots, together with a soft boiled egg and meat balls. The chili is provided on every table so feel free to add them on your own. The chili is fragrant but not spicy. As I'm a fan of spicy food, I wished the chili had more kick. The noodles were just normal. I liked the soup though. It looks very plain but is actually quite tasty. The fishball that came with it was quite different too. It tasted more like sotong ball. Will I return? I don't think I will, unless I'm in the area. I think the hype has died down already. Go and try it and make the verdict yourself!Rate: 3/5…查看更多

Brunch at Bochinche
Bochinche
2014-08-31
If you have read my post about Common Man Coffee Roasters, you would know how much I love the brunch items there. But CMCR is soo popular amongst the expats and its always packed! Now, do you know there's an alternative nearby? Really near in fact; it's located just above CMCR!Had the chance to try out their new brunch menu sometime back, and I'm happy to know that some favourite classics on Bochinche's dinner menu can be found on the brunch menu too. You definitely should not miss the Provoleta cheese which I recommended here. Other classics include the house chips, House chorizo sausage and Yellow fin tuna.We started our brunch with some freshly squeezed juices made on the spot at their bar and served in a cute beaker. Both the orange and grapefruit juice, as well as the watermelon and mint juice were really refreshing. The Toasted croissant with grilled tomatoes, creamy spinach & smoked ricotta ($9) uses the same croissant as CMCR which I loveeee. This is definitely one dish I'll order if I'll head back again. The Ricotta pancakes, berries salad, maple syrup & cinnamon crème fraîche ($18) is a dish that would whet anyone's appetite just by looking at it. The colours are so enticing! Pancakes here are slightly more chewy than the usual buttermilk pancakes. So if you like something with more bite and texture, then you'll probably love this!My favourite dish of the day! The Squid burger, smoked pepper, chopped romanine, crayfish & dill mayo ($27) was so flavourful. The patty was fresh and crisp and the dill mayo totally enhanced the taste of the patty. I will totally have this on my own!I spotted the Brioche French toast, house-cooked ham & bacon, vanilla ice cream ($19) on the menu and I was thinking to myself "ham and bacon with ice cream??". It sounds super mismatched but the flavours actually went quite well together. I wished the flavours were more robust though.Bochinche provides a twist to the usual eggs benedict, by substituting ham with braised ossobuco. It looks super awesome but I can't take beef!! :( The eggs was perfectly poached and the yolk oozes out once the knife delves into it.Ending the meal with some desserts and the Crème caramel, “dulce de leche” & crushed meringue ($13) was something I didn't try at the dinner tasting. The pudding was soooo smooth and creamy and the crushed meringue added on to the texture. What a perfect end to the meal!Read full review and photos, please visit shirlynnyang.blogspot.com…查看更多

Not-bad food, bad service
Char Casual Dining
2014-07-28
Char is a casual eatery along Guillemard Road that has gathered quite a bit publicity on social media platforms in recent weeks. Specialising in cantonese cuisine, especially roasted meat, Char serves typical tze char fare in a casual air conditioned environment. The sticky gooey black char siew is what people go to Char for. Going at $5/100g (min. order of 300g), the char siew looks charcoal black and tarred at first glance and one might think that it's burnt. But it is not. Instead, the tender and melt-in-the-mouth char siew is coated with a sweet glaze and perfectly caramelized. With a right balance of sweet and savoury, the fats just dissolves in the mouth. I wished the fat to meat ratio was lower though. But, if you like fatty and sweet char siew, then I'm sure you'll love this! With the roast pork out of stock in just less than 2 hours after they opened (what a bummer!), we ordered the Roast Pork with Beancurd in casserole instead ($16). A typical comfort food that goes well with rice but nothing too outstanding. Pretty pricy for just beancurd and few pieces of roast pork. The Hot and Sour soup ($5) was not bad. It wasn't too starchy and the chili padi inside packs a punch.Overall, the food at Char is not bad though I wouldn't say the same for their service. Imagine having to wait for 1 hour before you get to eat because the server who took your orders did not submit it to the kitchen. Constant lapses in the service is a huge turnoff. They definitely need to work on their service standards to retain the customers.I still hope to try their roast pork but it won't be soon till I visit again. Queues are still long during meal times so do make reservations if you are planning to head down. For full review and photos, please visit shirlynnyang.blogspot.com…查看更多

Great food, soso coffee
One Man Coffee
2014-07-13
For full review and photos, please visit shirlynnyang.blogspot.comA cafe that has sprung up in the Thomson area a few months back. It's a cafe by day and a pizzeria by night which I think makes so much economic sense. I've walked past this place many times before in the day and it's often dead. Zero business at all. And now that One Man Coffee started operating here in the day, it's so lively with all the chattering of the cafe goers. The Brioche French Toast was soft and fluffy; you almost didn't have to chew it. The berry compote was really fresh and goes so well with the toast. I don't usually eat nuts but I tried the candied walnuts and couldn't stop reaching out for more. It's pretty addictive! So crunchy and slightly sweet which helps to remove the raw nutty taste. My favourite is the Gashouse Egg a.k.a Toad In The Hole a.k.a Egg-in-the-bread-with-the-hole-in-the-middle with bacon jam ($10) (yes, the name is that longggg). I loveeee the bacon jam, it tastes like bak kwa! I wished they gave more of that. The second time I went, I requested for the egg to be runny 'cos I hate sunny side up with cooked yolk. The bread ended up less toasted and hence less crispy. I guess we can't always have the best of both worlds?I would definitely order The Toasted Butter Croisant with Honey Ham and Melted Cheese again. It's such a great comfort food 'cos it's so satisfying and is just a perfect breakfast item. The croissant is light and flaky and it's my second favourite after the one I had at CMCR.…查看更多

Fine Argentinian cuisine in Singapore
Bochinche
2014-06-29
A little research about Argentinian cuisine and you will know that the main bulk of their diet is made up of beef. But at BoCHINche, they make sure there's something for everyone! (You got to trust me on this 'cos I don't eat beef but I was filled to the brim at the end)I particularly like the ambience there - it's dimly lit and cozy, definitely makes for a great place to have some drinks with your friends and to unwind after a long day at work. You can choose between indoor seats for an intimate experience, al-fresco seats if you wish to have some quiet time with your friends, or even the bar seats to see the chefs and bartenders in action.BoCHINche boasts a large selection of drinks - wine, cocktails, coffee, tea etc. One should not miss having a drink or two here as they serve pretty good cocktails that not only taste nice, but are visually pleasing too. I had the Mr Hendricks which consists of Hendrick’s gin, egg white, Japanese cucumber, lemon & mint. It was refreshing and the cucumber flavour was distinct.Doesn't pig's head croquettes sound quite disgusting? But to my surprise, it tastes really good! In fact, it was one of my favourite dish that night! The croquettes were fried to a golden perfection and the filling of shredded pork was very flavourful. I thought that the quince sauce on the side didn't help too much in terms of taste, but a good drizzle of it helps make the croquettes less dry!The Provoleta is one of the must-have here! Served in a hot pan, the provolone cheese is rich and chewy but not overpowering. The honey complements it very well, making it subtly sweet. It goes well with the house-baked bread or on its own. Best to eat it fast or it would start to harden. For full review and photos, please visit shirlynnyang.blogspot.com…查看更多

Some hits and misses
PS.Cafe at Harding Road
2013-06-25
I've always wanted to try out PS cafe and was really excited when I finally get to go there. Located at Harding Road (Dempsey), it is not easily accessible unless you have your own private transport.Anyways, it was mad crowded on a Sunday morning. We got there at 11 plus and it was full house. Had to wait 20 min or so before we got a not-so-nice seat. A 2-seater table against the wall means that for a group of 3, one had to be facing the wall to dine (and that has got to be me).PS cafe exudes a pretty nice vibe, I believe it would have been much better if it's not so crowded. It'll be a really nice place to sip a cup of coffee. I ordered the Eggs Benedict while my aunt and sis shared the PS Harding Club. I think the food was pretty normal. Nothing to rave about. The hollandaise sauce on the eggs ben was kinda bland. I was expecting a burst of flavour when I first took a bite, but it seems like the sauce and egg and muffin were all separate bodies. You could taste each of them individually and I thought that was really weird.I tried the PS Harding Club, which was like a club sandwich, it was pretty normal. I've had better ones at Antoinette and the Lantern. And of cos, we ordered the very famous Truffle Fries. I've to join the rest and agree that it really came as a MOUNTAIN. The truffle oil smell was pretty strong. It's my first time trying truffle fries and I kinda like it. The serving was so huge, the 3 of us can't even finish half of it. The fries were pretty addictive. Eat it while they are hot!We ordered drinks and a sticky date pudding to share afterwards, which I ate 3/4 of it. They only took a bite and stopped! But boy, the sticky date pudding was sooo good! It's my first time eating it and I wonder what took me so long to discover such yummy dessert! In my aunt's term, it called the english 'huat kueh'. And she claims that the one at Marmalade Pantry is even better. That gives me a reason to give MP a visit next time! The sticky date pudding came warm and served with lots of caramel sauce and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It was the perfect combination! The vanilla ice cream was super good! You could see some black dots in it, and I believe its the vanilla seed used to made it. There was a very strong vanilla taste and it was just splendid!I was so satisfied with the Sticky Date Pudding, I forgot all about the disappointment the eggs benedict brought. Please be warned that the sticky date pudding is really really sweet and gelat and the portion is big, so it's better to share.Overall, PS cafe had some hits and misses. But I reckon I won't be back so soon since it's not exactly affordable for me plus there are better options elsewhere.…查看更多

Great coffee!
Maison Ikkoku
2013-06-25
Ordered the Caffe Mocha ($6.50) and Signature MI Latte ($6). We requested the barista to do a special coffee art for us! You'll see later.I like that the Caffe Mocha was very rich. It was very chocolatey, yet you could distinctly taste the coffee as well. It would be good for those who don't really drink coffee or are learning to drink.TADA! The special coffee art for my dad! The wordings aren't very clear but its "HAPPY FATHERS DAY" with a Superman sign! I thought it was really hard to make and kuddos to the barista for taking such requests! My dad was really happy! The Signature MI Latte pales in comparison though. I thought the coffee taste wasn't strong enough and my mum mentioned it was bitter. I've to agree with her as I had to add sugar, which I usually don't at cafes.I was constantly attracted by the table next to us as they were having eggs benedict! My favourite! I was soooo tempted to order one to try as I saw the oozing york as the guy cut open the poached egg. *wipes saliva*Didn't get to try the cakes as we were full from dinner. And the coffees came in a bigger size than usual. But I've heard that the cakes were really good so I'll definitely be back again! …查看更多

Small cafe with good coffee
Stranger's Reunion
2013-06-25
Housed at 37 Kampong Bahru Road, Strangers' Reunion is a quaint little cafe that you can easily miss while walking down the stretch of shophouses. Its rustic looking door seems very uninviting, but when you push open the door, you'll find yourself immersing in a homely atmosphere instantly. The carrot cake wasn't too dense, neither is it fluffy. The cream cheese wasn't too thick. It was packed with walnuts and carrots too!The caffe mocha came with a perfect coffee art. This was less rich than the one I had Maison Ikkoku but it was pretty good too.The waffles came in a pretty vintage looking plate and was topped with fresh fruits and greek yoghurt. The greek yoghurt may be too strong for some and I find that it makes the waffles soggy and not so appetizing after awhile. The waffles was a tad inconsistent with some parts more burnt than others.…查看更多

Satisfy your dim sum craving at night!
瑞春點心
2013-06-13
For full review and photos, please visit shirlynnyang.blogspot.comIf you haven't heard of or tried Swee Choon before, you are losing out so much. This eatery sells dim sum and shanghainese food and has been around for a really long time, since my father's times. He said it's really popular cos this eatery opens till late at night and its now many youngsters' favourite night spot. The Spicy and Sour soup was yummy! Sourish and spicy and filled with bits of mushroom, tofu, chicken! My friends and I love this! This Chilled Chicken in Spicy Bean Taste is a great appetizer. The chicken is succulent and I usually don't eat chicken skin but this whole combination is so great I just had to eat it. It's a bit spicy and sweet. Though there's a layer of oil floating on top, it's so good it makes you forget all the guilt! The Xiao Long Bao was excellent too. The meat wasn't too hard and lumpy. Little bags of goodness, you can't stop at one!The Sichuan Chilli Oil Dumpling was great too. The dumpling skin wasn't too thick and hard, and the chilli oil gives an extra kick to the normal steamed dumplings! You have to try this when you are there! I can't describe the happiness you'll get when you carefully tear open the custard bun and look at the flowing golden lava!Layer Pancake w/egg and pork floss. Anything with pork floss tastes good! And there's egg too.Fried Hor Fun with shrimps in creamy egg sauce. I find this pretty normal. The Fried rice with shrimps was bland and lacked wok hei.Overall, Swee Choon offers a really large variety of dim sum and shanghainese food in a fuss free dining environment. But I think it's a safer option to stick to their dim sum rather than their main dishes. It can get crowded during dinner and supper time but waiting time is pretty short.…查看更多

nice cafe that serves awesome food
Selfish Gene Cafe
2013-06-13
For full review and photos, please visit shirlynnyang.blogspot.comThe cafe was pretty empty when we were there. And I'm totally loving it as we prefer to be in a quiet place to catch up with each other! But I think the cafe soon turned a bit noisy cos of our laughter Quoted from the Selfish Gene website, "Gene has always been rather selfish when it comes to food. It is not that he will never share his food, but rather he will not serve anyone food that he would not eat himself." I've to say, my taste of food is pretty much the same as Gene ;)If you have read about Selfish Gene from other blogs before, you would have known that their banana cake is one of the most popular items there. True enough, the cake was light and fluffy and the peanut butter surprisingly goes so well with banana cake! The crumble on top provided a different texture to otherwise soft and fluffy cake. The 3 slices of banana served at the side was really yummy too.The 3 of us shared a caffe mocha as we want to save our stomach space for the other cafes. I had a sip of it and thought that it was pretty bitter as most would have expected caffe mocha to be sweeter due to the chocolate content in it.Haven't heard much about the breakfast items at Selfish Gene but I'm so glad we tried them! The simple named Ham & Cheese Sandwich was not simple at all! It was really delish, our eyes lit up the moment our teeth sank into it.Their Breakfast Plate was really good too. The scrambled eggs was more to the creamier side but it suited our palates. Both my friends agreed that the tomatoes were really fresh and juicy. The bread was crispy at the edges. The best thing was, everything was served on a warm plate, which helped kept the food hotter for a longer time!…查看更多
