Yum Cha @ Chinatown - Mothers' Day Dim Sum
飲茶酒樓
2016-04-29
Yum Cha will be launching 3 special dim sums just for Mothers' Day this year and these exclusive dim sum will be available from 1st to 14th May at both Yum Cha Chinatown and Yum Cha Changi outlets.I was invited for a food tasting session at Yum Cha to try their Mothers' Day exclusive dim sum as well as many of their regular items and I got my friend Sam to join me for the tasting session. If you haven't decided where to bring your mum for a good meal for Mothers' day, you can consider bringing her and your family to Yum Cha. =)I took the MRT to Chinatown and when we stepped out of the station, we saw the beautiful sky with fluffy clouds. It was a short walk from the train station to Yum Cha restaurant. There is still the "Chinese New Year" feel around Chinatown area especially with all the hanging red/ yellow lanterns.Yum Cha restaurant on the left side. We went up to the restaurant using this escalator. There is a lift to go up to the second level as well.Reached! The following 3 items are the special Dim Sum introduced to this year's Mothers' Day menu.Braised Pork with Preserved Vegetable Buns ($2/ pc)This is a classic Chinese dish, probably has a long history. As they are small and easy to carry, these buns were eaten during war time when people were fleeing from the war in China before settling down in different parts of Asia.Tender pork belly is braised in their secret recipe sauce for hours to create a sweet and succulent taste that is balanced by a soft steamed bun. Be warned... pork belly is used here so expect to find lots of fats in the bun! I don't mind actually but I thought they didn't put in enough of the preserved vegetables to distinguish them from the normal "Kong Ba" pau. Pan-fried Salted Fish Bun ($5/ 3 pcs) This is quite an unique item that I had not tried before elsewhere. This is a traditional Chinese dish which is originated from Guangdong province. It is said that these salted fish buns were the favourite of Emperor Kang Xi of the Qing dynasty. The filling of the bun is made from salted fish paste and minced meat. If you are worried about the sodium level, the buns were not too salty surprisingly as there was a good balance of the proportion of salted fish paste and meat. The third item in the Mothers' day special menu is Almond Tarts. ($3.20/ 3pcs)They do look like Hong Kong bird nests' egg tarts with the almost translucent colour on top, isn't it? They are served in bite-sized portion and are served warm. Although I am not usually a big fan of almond paste, but I love these almond tarts. Other than the above 3 special Mothers' day items, we were also served their normal ala-carte dishes. Steamed Fish Maw with Shrimp Paste ($4.80/ 3pcs) One of my favourite dishes. Succulent prawns wrapped in fish maw.Prawn and Mango Sesame Fritters ($4.20/ 3 pcs)Another must-order dish when you are at Yum Cha restaurant.Scallop Pea-Shoot Dumpling ($4.60/ 3 pcs)Something new to me but I find that the skin was a bit too thick.Salted Egg PrawnsVery nice presentation. The prawns were deep-fried to crisp with the shells and I ate the shells as well. We felt that maybe they could add in more salted egg to give them a stronger flavour. For those who will peel off the prawn shells, you may not be able to really taste the salted egg flavour.Black Pepper Lotus Beef SliceLove the colours for this dish! Of course, the food was good too. Beef was tender and I also like the fried lotus roots, I think it will be better if the lotus roots were cut a bit thicker so that we can feel more crunch with every bite.7 Flavour TofuPeople at my table all didn't really like the seasonings of the tofu sprinkled on top. I guess most of us love our tofu with sauce/ gravy.Fried Vermicelli SeafoodThe dish was served with generous portion of ingredients such as prawns, scallops and fish slices.Liu Sha Bao ($4.50/ 3pcs)Their liu sha bao were nice too. Thanks Yum Cha for inviting us to the food tasting session. We had a great feast!Yum Cha Chinatown20 Trengganu Street (Off Temple Street)#02-01 Singapore 058479Tel: 63721717Email: chinatown@yumcha.com.sgOpening Hours:Weekdays: 11am to 11pmSat, Sun and Public Holiays: 9am to 11pm…查看更多

Burp Kitchen & Bar @ Bedok Reservoir
Burp Kitchen & Bar
2016-03-16
Burp Kitchen & Bar is a neighbourhood cafe situated just next to the Bedok reservoir. It is housed under the void deck, at a very secluded area, definitely great for a night chill out with friends.Salted Egg Tofu Fries ($8)I am a great fan of tofu and I actually had quite high expectation for this dish. It seems like an innovative dish that we had not tried before. However, to my disappointment, I couldn't really taste the tofu as the fries were overwhelmed with the very salty salted egg sauce and the skin was rather dry and tough. Another option is that you can request for wasabi mayo sauce to go with the fries instead. However, I do wonder whether tofu nuggets will make a better dish? Next we were served "Duo of Wings" (Burp Kitchen Wings - $10 and Salted Egg Wings - $14)Burp Kitchen Wings, their house wings, were marinated with special adobo sauce, probably inspired by the Philippines cooking style and air-fry. The sauce was flavoursome and I kind of like it. It was tangy and sweet, a bit salty and also tasted a bit garlicky. According to the female boss, Sarah, the sauce was made of apple cider, vinegar, soya sauce and garlic. The chicken wings were tender. However, the marinade did not go beyond the skin and the meat was bland. If not, the wings would taste even better! I overheard the gentleman sitting next to me, advising Sarah to try poking the wings with fork so that the meat can absorb the marinade. The sauce was the same salted egg sauce used in the tofu fries. Same issue as the above, the meat was bland. In fact, I would much prefer the burp kitchen wings marinated with adobo sauce than salted egg sauce. If I am not wrong, the salted egg wings cost $4 more."Duo of Burgers" (Crabby Patty - $18 & Burp's Beef - $16)Crabby Patty - Battered softshell crab, lettuce, salted egg sauce (again!), curry leaves and chilli padi sandwiched between the squid ink buns. Indeed, it is a very instagramable dish. Probably we had too much of salted egg sauce that night. As such, I still prefer having the crispy battered softshell crab on its own without the sauce. It was also served with potato salad. Burp's Beef - At one glance, it looks like an ordinary burger but it tasted good. This was one of my favourite dishes for the night. The burger was made of brioche buns with beef patty, american cheese, caramelized onions, pea sprouts (aka "dou miao") and spicy mayo sauce. The idea of using pea sprouts in burgers is uncommon but it definitely gave you the impression that you are having a healthier burger. I guess for every good dish, there is always room for improvements. I found that the minced beef patty didn't really hold well. As I cut through the burger, the patty sort of fell apart.Chicken Quesadilla ($9)Being a cheese lover, this tortilla wrap with slow-cooked shredded chicken and cheddar/ mozzarella cheese worked well for me. Dip it with the homemade salsa sauce for a more refreshing taste.Duo of Tacos (Pork Carnitas - S12 & Baja Fish - $12)Pork Carnitas - Slow-cooked BBQ pulled pork, coleslaw and salsa fresco. According to Sarah, the pork was slow-cooked for 8 hours! Overall, the taste was sweet. Baja Fish - Battered Fish, Coleslaw, Salsa Fresco and Spicy Mayo. This is probably the most value-for-money dish. Big chunk of battered fish meat wrapped in soft taco skin. I like this dish as well but was too full to savour it all. =)Thank you very much for to OpenRice Singapore and Burp Kitchen & Bar team for the food tasting invitation. I will probably be back this Saturday with a few of my friends after the "Carnival Run" at Bedok reservoir =)Burp Kitchen & Bar740 Bedok Reservoir Road #01-3165S470740…查看更多

Crystal Jade Steamboat Kitchen @ Plaza Singapura
翡翠小厨
2014-11-28
Crystal Jade started its restaurant operations at Plaza Singapura in 1999 as Crystal Jade Kitchen. In recent years, due to growing demand, it also offered steamboat during dinner time. This outlet had recently been revamped to "Crystal Jade Steamboat Kitchen" whereby you can find all-you-can-eat steamboat with free flow drinks and soft ice-cream. How about their usual Cantonese ala-carte dishes and dim sum? Good news for their die-hard fans. Traditional Cantonese favourites such as dim sum, roasted meats, congee etc will still be served for lunch and dinner so that you can have best of both worlds. Crystal Jade Steamboat Kitchen offers a wholesome spread of more than 35 ingredients including sliced meat (beef/ chicken/ pork), mussels, mushrooms and vegetables. The sliced meat here were for display purposes only. Those that you order are kept refrigerated and will only be served to you upon orders. This is to ensure freshness of the meat. :) Let us walk through the buffet section...There are many different types of condiments for buffet diners to create their own dipping sauces. Looking at the colourful bowls here make everything so appetizing. For me, I took a bit of each condiment and mixed them together. I like the sesame sauce and their housemade special sauce, so I put more of these 2 sauces into my dipping bowl. Other condiments include Sambal Belacan, Thai dipping sauce, fresh cilantro, spring onions, garlic etc. To make the steamboat buffet even more value-for-money, you can also find free flow of drinks (Soft drinks or hot beverages such as coffee and tea) and soft ice-cream here. All are included in the buffet! As we were happily chatting away, we didn't realize that the induction cooker was actually embedded in our table until Samantha showed us. See! It was nicely camouflaged in the table. For this tasting session, we were served with two different types of soup bases, namely pork's bones soup (left) and curry soup (right). Crystal Jade Steamboat Kitchen offers diners six different soup bases. The other soup bases include Tomato Soup, Miso Soup, Superior Soup and Spicy Mala soup. The temperature control was found underneath at one side of the table. It is really easy to operate, just need to press either the "up" or "down" button to control the temperature. While waiting for our soup bases to boil, we enjoyed their cooked items such as Deep Fried Fish Skin, Deep Fried Chicken Skin and Deep Fried Mushroom Stems that were offered at the buffet line. They served as pretty good snacks, crunchy and not oily.We were served with some of their popular ala-carte roasted combination platter and dim sums before we dipped into the steamboat.Roasted Combination Platter ($25.80/ per serving)This is one of your "must-order" dishes if you are here at Crystal Jade. As I was typing this post, just by looking at this photo of the roasted combination platter, made me drool and want to go back so much to the restaurant. The roasted duck meat was tender and I loved the caramelised crispy duck skin. The duck meat had a rich flavour as it was seasoned with various Chinese herbs stuffed in the stomach before being roasted. The roasted pork belly was juicy with a crisp pork-crackling. The quality pork belly was seasoned with salt and five spice powder and roasted for 1.5 to 2 hours. Last but not least, the honey barbecued pork, with fats that melt in your mouth, was flavourful and tender too. Plum and mustard sauce were served with the platter as dips. It is recommended to dip the roasted duck meat with the plum sauce and the roasted pork belly with mustard sauce. Dim sums served at Crystal Jade definitely are of a certain good standard.Steamed Shrimp Dumpling "Ha-Kau" ($4.60/per serving of 3 pieces) Deep-fried Yam Puff with Minced Meat ($4/ per serving of 3 pieces) Generous minced meat fillings inside. Steamed Pork and Shrimp with Crab Roe Dumpling "Siew Mai" ($4.20/per serving of 3 pieces) Pan-Fried Fish Cake with Radish ($4/ per serving of 3 pieces)This dish was something new to us. We were introduced to this old-school dim sum in Hong Kong that is now difficult to find and of course, I have not seen this in Singapore so far. This dim sum is made by stuffing minced fresh fish cake and radish between two layers of wonton skin. After feasting on the roasted meat platter and dim sums, let us get back to our steamboat. Beef slices - note that they are all very thinly sliced so they will be cooked easily. Chicken Slices. Pork Slices.Home-made Minced Pork Paste and Home-made Minced Chicken Paste were served in small square trays. Diners can try to scoop them and shape them into meatballs to cook them in the soup. I tried the pork bones' soup first as I was afraid the curry would numb my taste-bud. In fact, I love the pork bones' soup so much that I had several bowls of it until I was too full to really try the curry soup. The soup was light and sweet. Will be great to end off your meal with a sweet note by having some soft ice-cream.It was an enjoyable meal at Crystal Jade Steamboat Kitchen. Sam and I had a great steamboat dining experience in a very cosy and comfortable setting. Thanks Joh Ju from Pinstripes Communications for this invitation and of course, Samantha from Crystal Jade for hosting the dinner.…查看更多

Cafe Brio, Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel
Cafe Brio
2014-11-28
My foodie friend, Pauline won a pair of passes to Miss Tam Chiak Blog Party at Cafe Brio, Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel earlier this month. She brought me along to the party and it was nice to meet Miss Tam Chiak in person and we even shared the same table. The high-tea session comprises of many local delights such as Nonya Laksa, Bak Kut Teh, Rojak, Nonya Kueh as some International fares such as Japanese Sushi and Western desserts. There is also an outdoor BBQ station. The colourful spread of sushi that they have. They don't have my favourite salmon sushi though. I had a handroll too. We can choose the ingredients that we want at this live station. The chef was very humourous. He said if we wanted everything in one handroll, he could do it for us too! Haha... Miss Tam Chiak's friend, Derrick (www.sgonfoot.com) was very nice to prepare rojak for every table. Thank you so much! :) Laksa Live Station I enjoyed my bowl of nonya laksa with cockles which was delicious with the rich and flavourful gravy. I had a plate of Nasi Lemak too.Outdoor Barbecue Station (Charcoal-Fired Grill)We don't normally see barbecue station in other typical high-tea buffet but be warned, this area was really like a burning furnace, very very hot here! Need to "suffer" a bit for your BBQ chicken wings, sausages, sweet corns and satay! Beef, Chicken and Mutton Satay. I ended off the session with a piece of sweet strawberry flan and for Pauline, she had ice-cream! A nice group photo with Miss Tam Chiak (Maureen)! Being the host of the event, she was seldom at her seat as she was busy going around to interact with her guests. Hope to have a chance to meet up with her again.Congratulations to Maureen and also thanks Pauline for bringing me along to this party!…查看更多

Ricciotti 10th Anniversary Party
Ricciotti
2014-11-28
I was invited to Ricciotti Riverside for their 10th Anniversary Media Party on 16 October 2014. Ricciotti was formerly known as Ricciotti Pizza Pasta Grill. In conjunction with its tenth anniversary, it officially underwent significant changes to provide its customers with a new dining experience. It also combines all things Italia, combining food with the Arts, Music and Culture. The tasting menu looked really impressive and I was looking forward to the party!Contemporary design of the restaurant, with many of the items imported from Italy. First, we had a sharing plate of a few types of appetizers. Carpaccio Di Polpo (Sliced Octopus, Lemon, Fennel) which was refreshing and made a good appetizer before we had the mains. I liked their Asparagi Alla Griglia, which is grilled asparagus and parma ham. We also snacked on the Polenta Herb Fries, which was served with truffle mushroom sauce dip. It was quite an unique combination. Another refreshing dish on the plate was Nizzarda Salad that was a blend of mesclun, fresh tuna loin, quail eggs, green beans, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, anchovies topped with sherry dressing. Lastly, we also had Panzerotti, pizza doughs (shaped like our curry puffs) that were stuffed with chef's creation.Opening speech from the management. “A fresh take on the gastronomic experience is what people should expect from Ricciotti. Coming together over food, art and music, what’s not to enjoy?” said Managing Director, Ottavio Gori. DC Mulay, founder of Crozzborderz, sharing about "Food for Good".http://www.crozzborderz.com/ricciotti Luca Ciarla played his violin with deep emotions, marrying his music with art installations projected on the screen.Kezia Terracciano, a world-renowned artist born in Italy, performed live at the party while we were enjoying the great food. Back to the food. For Pasta selection, we had Gnocchi Al Gorgonzola (Spinach gnocchi with gorgonzola cheese), Linguine Al Granchio (Crab Meat, Chilli, Tomato Cream) and Risotto Al Frutti Di Mare (Arborio Rice with Seafood). For the main courses, we felt that the Cod Fillet was a clear winner. It was fresh and tender, served with sundried tomatoes and sauteed spinach. The Chicken Skewer was presented on chickpea dip. The chicken meat, which was marinated with herbs, had a nice flavour. We had a Porcini E Scamorza Pizza. Toppings included Porcini mushrooms and cow's milk cheese. This pizza was not too heavy on the stomach but I do wish there were more mushrooms on it. Finale for the tasting session! The Dessert Platter! Soffiatto (Dark Chocolate molten cake with Stracciatella gelato), Canella Sweet Pizza, Tiramisu and Carrot Cake.…查看更多

Refuel Cafe @ Bedok Reservoir Road
Refuel
2014-11-28
I have not really visited many cafes in Singapore as many of them are located quite far from where I am staying and are not very accessible. I am glad that recently, there are a few cafes making their way into the heartland of Singapore and being an Easterner, I will like to explore some of the cafes in Bedok and Changi area first. As it was the start of the holiday for me yesterday ie no need to report to work, I decided to make a trip to Bedok Reservoir on my own to have my brunch at Refuel Cafe. Refuel Cafe is located at this block. Located below the void deck. The cafe was not really very big and the seats were almost all filled up by lunch-time. I saw a few parents bringing their children who were dressed in school uniform (probably they just took their PSLE results) to have their meal here. All prices shown on the menu are the Nett prices. The cafe doesn't charge GST and Service Charge. I ordered a small cup of Latte ($4.50). Interesting design of the magazine rack. As the cafe has the theme of petrol station, you can find "props" like the barrels below, signages related to petrol kiosks here. The cafe served All-Day breakfast and I ordered their recommended "Full Tank" aka "Big Breakfast" which had bratwurst, bacon, scrambled eggs, mushrooms, toast, tomatoes, potatoes & salad all served on one plate. ($13.90) Of course, I loved the mushrooms best and followed by the lightly toasted bread which was soft. The scrambled eggs was too creamy for my like as I prefer it to have a bit more texture. After my meal, I spent some time walking around the neighbourhood. Near to the cafe, there is this birds shop that caught my eyes. Do check it out if you are around the area.…查看更多

To-gather Cafe @ Bedok North Street 4
To-gather Cafe
2014-11-28
I had a gathering with my secondary school buddies last Sunday. Due to our hectic schedule, we only got together to meet up twice this year, excluding our secondary school 20th year mass reunion. We could only lament that time really flies, another year had passed by so fast. As all of us stay in the East, with 3 of them staying in Bedok, we decided to meet up at To-gather Cafe, which is strategically located at Bedok heartland. I called in to make reservation for 5 of us as I had seen queues outside the cafe on two occasions when I was around the area with my hubby. You could request for post-it from them to do some doodle or write some motivational quotes and stick them to a designated part of the wall. One of my friends decided to bring her two kids along and fortuately, there was a small play corner (just behind our table) for them while the five of us had our food and conversations over the small cozy table at one end of the cafe.Like many other cafes, we had to go over to the counter to order and pay for our food first. No service charge and GST here. My friends ordered a plate of Mexican Quesadilla ($6.50) to share - Tortilla with grilled chicken slices, sautee mixed bell peppers, mozzarella cheese and fresh tomato salsa. Roasted Hazelnut Latte ($4.40) I was the only one ordering a main as the rest of them had lunch already. I ordered Grilled Pandan Chicken Chop, served with light coconut sauce, pineapple salsa, fries and salad. ($8.90) The chicken chop was tender and for this price tag, I got nothing to complain. I had been warned by my cousin and friends that their Matcha Lava Cake was very sweet. However, I wanted to try for myself as I thought this was one of their signatures, after looking at so many of their matcha lava cakes on instagram. True enough, the matcha was really far too sweet. My friend and I couldn't finish it off! :( Overall, I find the cafe a nice cozy place to chill with friends. We spent two and a half hours at the cafe catching up and spending quality time with one another. Looking forward to our next meet-up. Another cafe? Probably.…查看更多

New Ubin Seafood @ Sin Ming Road
New Ubin Seafood
2014-11-28
My parents wanted to give me my birthday treat in advanced for me as they would be away in Indonesia for their holidays during my birthday. Hubby suggested going to New Ubin Seafood as he had tried their steak before and he said all the food was great.Hubby made a reservation at 11.30am for 4pax (my brother was in Korea so he couldn't join us) and we reached there slightly earlier when there was no crowd yet. We were given a seat just in front of the water feature on the left.Menu We all ordered lime juices as it was complimentary. Water feature behine us. Fried Mee Special ($12/ S)We could find many sea of goodness here such as baby squids, clams in a thick gravy and topped with lots of lard. We all loved it very much. US Black Angus Ribeye Steak ($12 per 100g/ min 500g), served with caramelized onions, idaho potato wedges on a wooden platter. Condiments include sea salts, ketchup and wasabi sauce. Most people visit this restaurant for the steak. This is a must-order!We had our steak "Medium Well" and it was so flavoursome and juicy! You could feel my happiness as I chewed each cube of steak in my mouth. A plate of fried rice will also be served to you if you ordered the ribeye steak. It was actually fried with the fats from the beef! You can eat this on its own. My dad doesn't take beef, so we ordered Signature Meat Platter for him to share with mum. It consists of Kurobuta Ribs, Chicken Satays and Smoked Duck Breast. ($50/platter) Hong Kong Kailan Special - prepared in two styles. ($12/ S) Overall, it was a great meal! I am missing the steak, the pork ribs and the hokkien mee now. Hope to visit it again to also try their soft boiled egg with foie gras.New Ubin Seafood…查看更多

OpenRice Food Tasting @ Brewbaker's Kitchen & Bar,
Brewbaker's Kitchen & Bar
2013-11-09
I attended my first OpenRice Food Tasting session at Brewbaker's Kitchen & Bar (managed by JP Pepperdine), together with my friend, Sam. Brewbaker's Kitchen & Bar had just revamped their whole menu, incorporating both Western and Japanese dishes. Residents nearby can now get to enjoy Japanese cuisine at this location, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. How to get here by public transport? Recommended Route:- From Sengkang MRT Station, transfer to Sengkang LRT Line.- Board the Sengkang West Loop LRT and alight at Farmway Station.- Take a 5 minutes’ walk over to Anchorvale Community ClubWe walked down a flight of steep staircase to the basement, nearer to the sports complex side, and saw the restaurant at the end corner.Sashimi Caesar Salad ($12.80)Tossed assorted lettuce with caesar dressing, topped with garlic-herb croutons and raw fish. Wasabi sauce was served in a small dipping bowl and you pour the amount of sauce according to your liking. This was quite a refreshing appetizer with all the crunchy lettuce, blended with the raw fish cubes and wasabi sauce. Carbonara Udon ($12.60)The chef explained to us that this was a fusion dish. The home-made udon was also very different from the thick ones that we normally have. Their vesion of udon was long and much thinner, but still maintained the springy texture. Served in a rich creamy sauce with crispy ham bits and an onsen egg, this was really "oishii"!Kinoko PizzaJapanese Styled Mushroom Pizza($12.60)The pizza texture was like that of soft bread. Eating this pizza, was like eating a piece of bread topped with mushroom, mayo and fish flakes. Would give this a miss the next time.Unagi Roll (3 pieces for $12.80)My friend, Sam requested for unagi roll as during the tasting session, there were a number of beef dishes she couldn't take. I didn't try this but Sam said it was very good. Could tell from the presentation, it looked quite tasty with thick slice of unagi wrapped over avocado/ crabstick and omelette sushi.N.Z Beef Rib($21.00)I think this dish should be meant for those with huge appetite. The beef rib was huge and I took a small slice, it was quite tender but the taste was a bit overwhelmed by the sweet BBQ sauce.Beef Shabu Shabu (2 paxs) ($28.60)This was one of my favourite dishes for the night. I love to swish the meat back and forth in the boiling broth. Do not throw the meat inside the soup for too long otherwise it would become tough and spoil the taste. I took 2 pieces of the sliced beef and cooked them just right, very juicy!Matsu Sushi Moriawase6 types of sushi ($31)I tried a salmon roe sushi and a sweet shrimp sushi. The sushi were fresh. After we were done with the above main courses, we proceeded to the outdoor seating for Yakiniku! Why outdoor? The main reason was to prevent the restaurant interior from having the smokey smell and also, to enjoy better ambience doing our grilling outside. We all had fun "BBQ"ing alfesco in the cooling weather.Pork Belly Yakiniku - Pork belly on Charcoal grill ($12.80 for 1 pax)Our table got a plate of sliced pork belly. They were thinly sliced and would get overcooked quite easily. I took a few slices of the pork belly and they were rather tough. We were worried that the pork slices were not cooked totally and grilled them for too long and sometimes, we were busy taking photos and forgot to flip them over. Ribeye Yakiniku (BBQ) ($32.80)The other table had a plate of beef slices and I took one cooked slice from them to try. It was quite a thick slice but the meat was tender and juicy. I would recommend this!Marble Cheesecake in a chocolate cup - Served with mixed fresh fruits and chocolate sauce ($6.50)The cheesecake was uniquely presented inside a chocolate cup and it was wiped off by the four of us very fast. The texture of the cheesecake was soft and not too dense. I tried to break the chocolate cup with my fork and spoon but failed. It was very hard and thus, we didn't eat the chocolate cup. I suppose it was meant to just hold the cheesecake inside nicely.Thank you OpenRice for the invitation and looking forward to more food tasting sessions with them in future! For more photos and detailed review, pls visit: http://www.ylyn-journal.blogspot.sg/2013/11/openrice-food-tasting-brewbakers.html…查看更多

Modern Presentation of Western Fare@ Hawker Centre
Do & Me
2013-10-16
Many of you will know that you can find very cheap and reasonably good food at Teban Gardens Food Centre. I had reviewed previously that a bowl of fishball noodles cost only $2. There is one western food stall "Do & Me" located right at the end of the food centre. I decided to give it a try. I placed my order and then was told to go back to collect my food 5 minutes later. I was pleasantly surprised when I went to collect my fish and chips. My food was presented on a very nice white try, with different partitions for the side dishes such as baked beans and coslaw too! I posted this photo on instagram and many people asked me which hawker centre I got this nice presentation of food from. Although the portion of fish was a bit little, but overall taste and presentation wise was good. Reasonable for $6.…查看更多

Fried Instant Noodles
合立經濟米粉
2013-10-15
It was a Monday morning and many of the stall were closed at Teban Gardens Market and Food Centre. Normally, I will not go for heavy breakfast ie no rice no noodle. However, as most of the stalls were closed, I decided to try the food at this stall. Instead of the normal beehoon, I tried the fried instant noodles. I asked them not to give me too much noodles and topped with sausage and luncheon meat ($2.10). It was quite nice, not too salty. A few days ago, when I ordered fried maggie from the muslim stall nearby, it was so salty that I couldn't finish even half the plate. …查看更多

Fruit Juice
Fruits & Juices - Cook House
2013-10-10
This was my first time to JEM. I finished work early and decided to explore the whole Jurong East Mall (JEM) before meeting hubby and our friends for dinner. I did some window shopping for almost one over hour and my legs were tired. Decided to find a not so crowded place to rest. The food court - "Cook House" is located on the fifth level and at around 6.30pm, there were still quite a number of empty seats. The fruit stall is located just at the entrance to the food court so I ordered my water-melon juice ($2.50) and found a place to sit. There was only one staff mending the stall. I didn't see her putting the freshly cut fruit into the blender. After I placed my order, she just switched on the blender which already had water-melon juice inside. Thus, I was not sure how long the juice was put in the blender before I placed my order. The water-melon juice was not really too sweet although I wish it could be sweeter.…查看更多

Ayam Penyet
Salbiah Malay Stall
2013-10-10
I tried another Muslim stall today during lunch time. The photos on the stall's signboard all looked good and attractive. I decided to order Ayam Penyet ($4) because the photo showed a nice presentation of Ayam Penyet. The dish cost $4 and service was fast. Before the vendor served me the plate of chicken, he used a tool to try to "mash" the chicken meat. The chicken meat was served separately from the rice, with some cucumbers and sauces. It was also served with a small bowl of soup. The chili used was very hot and together with the black sauce, it added to the flavour of the chicken. Although the presentation of the dish was different from what was shown on the signboard, it was tasty and would recommend to you. …查看更多

Very Salty Fried Maggie
Wahida Muslim Food
2013-10-10
Decided to try out a new stall during my lunch time. There are a number of Muslim stalls at Teban Gardens and I just randomly picked this stall. I thought there was only one lady queuing for her food at this stall. Somehow, I had some craving for fried maggie and thus, I ordered that for my lunch. I found a seat just in front of the stall and sat there as I waited for my fried maggie. However, I soon realized that the guy preparing the food somehow couldn't quite cope. The lady in front of me ordered two plates of mee goreng. She waited very long for her food too. Then, I found out that another guy also placed a few orders before the lady. I waited for almost 15 minutes and wanted to cancel my order but the guy preparing the food told me that he was already boiling the instant noodles. Thus, I got no choice but to continue waiting. I observed the way he prepared the food, didn't seem to be very hygienic. He didn't wash his hands after collecting money and proceeded to cut the cucumbers and other ingredients. When my fried maggie was finally ready, I went back to join my colleagues for lunch. They had almost finished their food. Presentation of the fried maggie ($3.50) was nice. However, to my great disappointment, it was very very salty. He poured the packet of flavouring that came with the instant noodle into the noodles and probably he didn't stir it well. The packet contained monosodium glutamate, high level of sodium. I finished the egg but could only finished less than half the plate of noodles as it was too salty. Thus, a very unsatisfying lunch on that day. :(…查看更多

Hand-Made Noodle
昇旺面粉粿
2013-10-10
Sheng Wang Hand-Made Noodle 昇旺面粉粿 is located as the same coffeeshop as Mellben Seafood Palace. This stall has always been my favourite noodle stall ever since I moved over Pasir Ris. The stall is open daily from morning till around 3pm daily. Whenever I finish work early, this is one of my top choices for late lunch option. During weekend morning, the stall will be extremely crowded and you might have to wait for around twenty minutes for your order.I like this type of noodle which is sold at a very affordable price at $3. The ikan bilis broth is really very sweet and tasty. I will always finish drinking the bowl of soup. I had seen them bringing out a huge container of ikan bilis to air on a few occasions during the weekday afternoon. The $3 bowl of noodle also come with an egg, although the consistency of the egg is not the same always, sometimes fully cooked, sometimes runny. The noodle texture is really very good, not too soft. I will recommend this stall if you are around this area.…查看更多
