A newborn only given birth on 1 May 2013, GRUB Singapore @ Bishan Park is, if you are familiar, opened by Mervyn Phan of Cookyn Inc, a team-building, bonding kind of programme, made available to groups of people looking for fun by way of whipping up dishes, the impromptu style. I love that it is opened in a Park, because I, for one, felt refreshed and real good being in a Park for Brunch. It felt like a vacation.

Mocha ($5++): The Mocha was a top-up (additional $2.50++ only) of my below Breakfast Set. I concluded, no this is not a place for a good cup of coffee, and that’s coming from someone who isn’t all that picky with coffee. I think you’re better off with the Liberty Hot Coffee that comes with the Breakfast Set, they’re comparable.

If you so fancy, they also have quite a couple of a hand-crafted beer, and ciders, available all day. Psh, who says you can’t drink in the morning.

GRUB Breakfast Set ($15++): Scrambled Eggs first. Though it’s not the uniquely creamy and smooth-textured scrambled eggs, it was good enough. It was more of the well-executed home-cooked eggs. I love the big-ass mushrooms that comes with the set. Many would disagree, but it’d have been better if there was a stronger mushroom smell. Well, it was still good. Oh, you can choose between a Beef or a Garlic Pork Sausage (nothing to yell about).

French Toast ($12++): I think it was the entire presentation and combination that drew me to it. The French Toast itself was sufficiently flavored, complemented with maple syrup, sour cream and strawberries, it was pretty much perfect. A sweet sweet breakfast to kick start your day, I wouldn’t complain. Comes with Garlic Pork Sausage.

Beef & Guinness Pie ($12++): Quite an interesting name, don’t you think? I thought the pie was excellent – it still remained crisp and warm despite swimming in the sauce. Again, it was the complete package that made the course enjoyable. The beef, the mashed potato, and the pie made a good team in my mouth. It isn’t entirely brunch-y, what with the overdose of carbohydrates, but it works too.

Belgian Waffle with Grilled Banana, Salty Caramel & Dark Chocolate Sauce ($9++): I’m pleased that it was priced at such an affordable rate. The waffle was spot on – it was light, airy and soft, while retaining the fragrance and taste of a Belgian Waffle. As I’m a digger for both the salted caramel and chocolate sauce, I’d be happier if there was more of them. Otherwise, a must-have, and value for money dessert plate.

In all, as mentioned, I thought most of the courses were above average, but not a crazy-oh-my-god-I-must-have-it level. Prices are more than reasonable in the cafe world. Service was good too. Approachable waitpersons, and are toward the cheerful side. Thumbs up. Nevertheless, definitely worth a visit, especially if you live in the area. Please, for god’s sake, drag your ass out on a weekend morning. I promise you, you will feel good. I mean, of course, it only applies to non-hazy days.

I opt to start off with the Pork Steak Burger. Craving for meat again! For $12, it's quite a good portion for the burger and fries. The dressing for the burger looks interesting - apples, cashew chimichurri.

Maybe i came with higher expectation but the burger turns out to be rather ok only. I seems to enjoy the fries more which was quite well done.

Ended the meal with a dessert to share and we chose the churros. This turns out to be nice! I really like the dark chocolate dip very much! Even after finishing the churros, my friend and i still finished up the remaining chocolate sauce! Haha. Churros is fried to almost perfection too. Very enjoyed this dessert.

I must say i really like the ambience for the whole place. The park area is really nice. For the cafe itself i will really love to take the outdoor seats if weather permits. Anyway will definitely be back again. Wanted to also try the beer!

After the success of Cookyn Inc, private chef Mervyn Phan set out to set up a warm, cosy environment where people could meet and share awesome good food. The result: GRUB.

Located at Bishan Park, GRUB doesn't look like much from afar, especially when the blinds are down in an attempt to ward off the heat. Outwardly, it was just this grey block sitting amidst the surrounding greenery. One of the few things that really stuck out a mile during my visit to GRUB was the wait - nearly 1 hour long, with no shelter available whatsoever once the sun went directly overhead.

Dispensing my first piece of foodie advice: If you are looking at a late weekend brunch, don't. Not unless you have a sure-fire way to get into the restaurant without much waiting.

And maybe it's because of the throngs of customers, service standards at GRUB was in no way adequate either. It took nearly 5 mins starting the moment we were ushered to our seats for a waiter to pass us the menu. The table was still littered with the remains of the previous diners if I may add.

Grumbling aside, the air-conditioned interior of the restaurant was a welcome reprieve from the sweltering heat from the outside. I liked the brick feature wall adorned with an assortment of posters lit up by a single bulb.

Crispy Fish Burger - $11
The fish burger would probably be the burger you see most people ordering. A gleaming burger top sandwiching a delectable looking fillet long enough to stretch miles outside the burger is rare indeed. The usual complaint of not finding the fish in between your bread is simply non-existent here. Couple that with the fake that they use Hake instead of Dory at GRUB, I was pretty happy with the burger.

Belgian Waffle with dark chocolate ice cream - $8 Simple, plain, unpretentious. It's a good ol' waffle toasted to perfection with a delightful scoop of dark chocolate ice cream. A tad expensive at $8, but I'll give them that.

Churros with dark chocolate or creme anglais dip - $8
Waaaay overkill with the sugar. Entire sticks of churros look as if they had every square mm of surface area plastered solid with sugar. It was to the extent that I could not really detect the original flavour of the snack through all that sugar crystals.

Quick Fix: Get your hands dirty yourself and start swabbing each churro of sugar before proceeding with the dips. That's quite nice enough.

Chef Phan's celebrity status locally has indeed drawn the crowds. But whether or not GRUB deserves the gourmet bistro status still remains to be seen, with a fair amount of hits and misses alike. Personally, while I don't mind visiting again to try other dishes on the menu, I really wouldn't want to go through that amount of waiting again.

Pretty cosy restaurant tucked at the corner of Bishan Park. It's only 3 weeks old according to the friendly staff and they are already packed with people.

Expect to queue for a table because they do not take reservation at the moment.

I ordered Beef and Guinness Pie, Waffles with Banana as well as Churros with chocolate sauce.

The beef on top of the pie was tender and well marinated, though I did not tasted any beer, but it was still really yummy. The presentation of this dish was very interesting as I had expected the meat to be inside the pie, it was in fact on top of the crust which all tasted so good.

The waffles with banana was pretty ordinary. But still nice.

Lastly, the churros was so fragrant, crispy and chewy. Extremely nice when it's hot and the chocolate sauce was just all too good that leave me wanting to have more.

We ordered their mocha and latte. Not too bad. They serve liberty coffee.

We enjoyed this place very much because of the good food, reasonable price and nice ambiance in the park!
