I went to look for the ORiGINAL tau kwa pau, which was at the coffees hop diagonally across, the last time I went which was some time ago. I bought Mary's TKP thinking it was the same one though I know the Stallone owner don't look the same. Mary's a big FAKE! And dishonest too. She first quoted me $6.50 for 2 boxes of 4 pcs. When I handed her $6.50, she told me its $10.50, but will charge me $10 only. I was confused but already handed her the $10. Later I realized I'd been duped! Her pau IS PURE FAKE! The real TKP's chili sauce . The ORIGiNAL Tao Kwa Pau at 126 East Coast Rad is the TRUE ORIGINAL!! continue reading

While dining at Saveur a few months back, I had particularly noticed almost every table had an order of Tau Kwa Pau, which is essentially fried bean curd stuffed with boiled eggs, cucumbers and pork shavings, topped off with some duck sauce.Tau Kwa Pau ($5)Having an order of Tau Kwa Pau was basically an after dinner indulgence as Pops & I still had room for more food. A single order of Tau Kwa Pau had a generous portion of easily 8 pieces of bean curd that were crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. The stuffing of diced up boiled eggs, cucumbers and pork shavings complemented the fried bean curd extremely well, as the topping of the duck sauce really gave the dish overall a distinct flavor. continue reading

This traditional snack is not commonly available. As a kid I remember tasting one of the best Tao Kwa Pau from an Uncle selling in the Joo Chiat and Haig Road. The last time, he sold at a Haig Road Coffee shop. I heard he retired. This current stall has been moving at the different corner of this traffic junction for many years. Originally it was diagonally opposite, than it move to across the road and now at its current location. There is another Tao Kwa Pau at the 1st location but this stall is the better ones. The secret to this dish is that the bean curd is well fried and the different stuffing. As this stall also sell braised duck, pig ear, fish ball, hard boiled egg & crispy yam. This is used as the stuffing which in turn gives it different textures at each bite. Minimum order is 2 pieces at $2.40 a plate. continue reading

I have started eating from this stall when they were at the original address and still eating there regularly when they moved to this current address, and the vacated address is taken over by another stall selling tau kwa pau too.I would think this is one of the healthier and tastier snacks you can ask for. What you get is a piece of fried tau kua kwa stuffed with chopped fish cakes, cucumbers, mashed hard boiled eggs and some fried crispy bits, then they will pour some duck sauce over and you can eat it with their specially made chilli. You gotta try this! continue reading
