Firstly, I tasted their pork belly, it was wine-marinated. Grilled and served with Kimchi on sizzling hotplate, pork was flavourful and aromatic. Next was boneless beef, a mess of mouth-watering plate. Savour the succulent Korean Beef, platter was sweet and delectable. Texture was chewy-soft delightful, mashed potato and broccoli was served aside. We sharing these dishes, portion were rather huge. Price wise, I would say it was not cheap yet value for money indeed. Ended our dinner, overall was satisfied with impressive service too.

I think I will jump to the conclusion now that the standard here is really way below my expectations. I would never visit the place again. The only commendable point is just that the place has good ambiance at the alfresco seating area.

Had Beef Japchae ($8) and Scallion pancake ($8.50). The former was 95% glass noodles with shreds of capsicum with only a few pathetic beef shreds. The latter was worse, just pancake dough and perhaps some bacon strips could be seen.

Ordered the Army Stew ($32), Bibimbap ($14), Yuzu Chic ($20) as our mains. The stew was alright. Bibimbap was not served in a stone pot and it was cold by the time everything was mixed together. The Yuzu Chicken could not be worse as the chunks of meat were near to tasteless.

Side dishes was pathetically limited with only three sides. There were four of us and the only serving given was surprisingly small that I mistakenly assumed initially that everyone was supposed to have their own set of side dishes separately.

My conclusion, as mentioned, the place has poor standards. Seriously wonder how this place could have survived still so far till now.

Not the first time there and brought friends there for a belated birthday celebration.

Coming into this restaurant feels like stepping into Korea. Real Korean servers welcome you, Korean music blasting and authentic Korean food served onto the table.

The seafood army stew's broth is not too spicy and best of all, it is not oily and does not give a jelak feel unlike the one I have tasted at bibigo. Only disappointment is that the portion is not very big and honestly as a Korean soup lover I would really wish for more broth to be serve for tis dish.

Seafood pancakes taste best when it is combined with the sauce. Totally not oily at all and I am sure it will please any healthy conscious people as well.

Ja Jung Myun serve there is not too sweet and goes really well with the noodle. Personally I am not a sweet tooth and this dish is my favourite from this restaurant. With a lot of onion bits and (I suppose Chicken Meat) bits and pieces of meat that complement perfectly with the noodle and black sauce. I am no gourmet expert but with this dish? I am sold.

Had made a reservation a day in advance and upon reaching, we were brought to our table without further ado. (Side note: do opt for outdoor seating if posible - the view and ambience are much nicer!)

After our orders were taken, the waitress immediately served up the trio of side dishes- Beans, Kimchi & Juipo (refillable!). I thought the taste rather mediocre (have tasted better elsewhere) but my hubby finished them all and asked for more - he must have been pretty hungry!

Our orders of Japchae/ Kimchi Pancake/ Army Stew followed shortly. The Japchae is a must-order - the noodles are cooked al dente and are totally infused with the right amount of flavour, beautifully complemented by shredded carrots, onions, scallions and black fungus. The Kimchi Pancake is so-so, savoury and peppered with seafood bits. The Army Stew was the highlight - a spicy and savoury stew brimming with luncheon meat, hotdog, tofu, rice cake and cabbages. You must order the optional noodles!! It's absolutely Korean kimchi ramen heaven with the noodles soaking up all the flavours in the hotpot!

All in all, it was a nice first experience, but the food costs a bit more than we felt it was worth (if not for the Groupons)... we would probably still end up at our favourite Korean haunt in the West for any cravings in this cuisine

I'm a big fan of Korean food so when my friend recommended the Sarang Korean Bistro at Orchard Central, I decided to give it a go. We tried the Sticky Chewy Rice Cake ($7) which is basically Korean rice cake stewed in a special sweet and spicy sauce. Now I'm not a big fan of rice cake (too filling for me) but I do like the sauce of this dish. I ended up eating more of the veggies that were stewed together in the sauce with the rice cakes. The rice cake itself was quite dense and chewy, and soaks up the flavour of the sauce well. Still, go for all the yummy bits in the sauce.

This is the Wine Marinated Pork Belly ($22) which is quite pricy for a few slices of meat but the pork belly is one of the more 'premium' parts of the pig so that's okay. The pork belly has a nice subtle wine flavour infused into it. You can taste it but it's not overwhelming and quite unique. Plus because of the wine, I feel it isn't as cloying as it normally would've tasted with all the fats. The down point of this dish is that the pork is quite dry and even though they had strips of fat cooked with the lean meat, it was still quite tough to chew on. The kimchi and mash potato sides were very nice! Silky mash potato, paired with spicy bites of fermented cabbage is good enough to eat it as its own.

The Army Stew ($32) may look big but I would reckon it's enough for 2 hungry people. If you're ordering many other sides, I may suggest to skip this as it can be very filling. There are luncheon meat, sausages, mushrooms, and veggies all thrown inside and stewed in a slightly spicy broth. Very delicious! I would love to eat this with a group of friends on a cold rainy day. The broth is slightly sweet, slightly spicy and tastes quite wholesome. I prefer the luncheon meat to the sausages though. I think they have pepper sausage in there which I didn't like too much as it clashes with the flavours. Do note that if you want noodles in it, you have to top up another $2.

And how can I have a Korean dinner without Kimchi pancake ($8)! I must order this dish at every Korean restaurant as I use this as a benchmark on how good the restaurant is. I must say this pancake didn't disappoint (but not the best I've tried) as I can really taste the kimchi flavours in it (some pancakes taste more of the flour than the kimchi). I wish they were more generous with the seafood topping though. It would've helped bring out the sweetness of the kimchi and balance out the overall taste of the dish.

I do want to make a mention about the service. It could most definitely be improved. We had to keep reminding the waitress about our food as they kept forgetting about our orders. And we only got the side dishes at the end of the meal. The side dishes should be the FIRST items out as an appetizer so that was quite disappointing. Not to mention it was quite difficult to get their attention for things like refill of water or even to serve us our rice. Hence, although the food is not bad, I may think twice about returning here.

I was there for lunch one day and I was greeted by very friendly staffs at the entrance in Korean with a smile.
Since I was dining alone for lunch, I sat the bar dining area under those huge "big ass fans" (pardon me but that's the actual name of it!) which kept me cool in the heat of the day.

Teasing my palate, I ordered the Fresh Kimchi (Geotjeoli kimchi) $4.80. Indeed it was Sarang’s signature freshly tossed kimchi as it wasn't too sour compared to the preserved ones I had previously. Appetizing, crunchy, spicy yet light in flavour. Perfect start!

My usual favourite over at Sarang, I can't resist having the Army Stew (Budae Jjigae) $12.80 which has a generous Kimchi, Sausage, Spam and Pork served in Seoul’s favourite hotpot. Excellent with just a good bowl of sticky Korean white rice to go along with it. Oh yes, more the leftover kimchi from my appetizer goes all into this hotpot to spice things up even more! It is said that the US army pass on this recipe to the Koreans during the Korean War era from canned spam and sausages and I was able to have the exactly same replicated one, except mine is with pork.

It was a delightful and light hearted lunch with of course, K-pop songs playing in the background which brought up the atmosphere. The young Korean mixologist at the counter was very friendly too to chat up with customers. I guess dining at a Korean restaurant is not just only on the food, but also the atmosphere and service too! Sarang is definitely a place worth revisiting for affordable Korean cuisine and great ambiance!

On the other hand, it means that they are very thoughtful to those who have made reservations, and apparently she said that they reserved it because of the Groupon vouchers that they had, where you spend $20 for $40 worth of food.

We didn't had any vouchers, but they gave us a limited time to eat.

Side dishes- Beans, Kimchi & Juipo (the korean fish, Jerky)
As all Korean restaurants would do it, there is complimentary starter which is refillable upon request. They don't tell you that, so please ask!

Close-up of Kimchi
I really love the Kimchi, it was extremely spicy and sour and flavourful. The cabbage was a really long piece and the sauce oozed out as I bit onto them in my mouth. It was absolutely delicious and satisfying as a meal starter!

Close-up of Juipo
The beans (in the background) was something that I didn't quite used to, and didn't know quite how to eat it. It's hard, tasteless, and really oily. The Juipo tasted similar to the kimchi, perhaps because of the seasoning? I'd give it second in place out of all the three starters! First, of course, to the kimchi.

H/H Pinnacle- Promotional Price $5
They were having an offer for only $5 for every alcoholic beverage. The wineglasses, apparently, was not chilled. The wine is! Therefore the wine cooled very quickly and became room temperature which was quite terrible to drink.

Scallion Pancake - $8.50
The scallion pancake is delicious! We wanted to try the Spoon Pizza but it was out-of-stock *SIGHS*. But anyway, this serves as a good appetiser as well... with about two prawns for the whole pancake, this thin leafy biscuit is drizzled with mayo and BBQ sauce, with slabs of ham layered across. The whole crust is just a delicious piece of heaven for your mouth to await, its' really that good.

Ginseng Chicken Soup - $29
This huge pot of ginseng chicken soup was accompanied with salt separately. When I first tasted it without adding the salt, it tasted so horrifying bland that I thought of walking out of the restaurant. The ginseng is stuffed into the innermost part of the chicken, so the soup doesn't have any taste of ginseng. Try and ease the chicken by taking out the ginseng and mixing it with the soup, then adding in the salt. But of course, if you're health-conscious then don't add the salt. They don't have rice accompanied with it, but apparently they did stuff a 1/4 bowl of rice into the chicken... so do add your own rice! Each bowl of rice costs $2.

The restaurant was absolutely empty but we were forced to sit in one corner. Apparently, the reason was that the whole restaurant is reserved. There are seats outside too. I felt really sad that they didn't treat us as customers, but prioritised those who have bought vouchers instead when those customers haven't even reached.

Still... Their food deserves a try.
Enjoy a little bit of the Korean culture here, OpenRicers!

Korean food aficionados rejoice! Sarang, previously known as the heartbeat of Seoul has recently undergone an overhaul and since reopened as a revitalized, much improved upscale and decidedly chic Sarang, Korean Bistro. Modeled after the modern contemporary restaurants in the posh and upmarket district of Gangnam, Sarang is the first to introduce the avant-garde concept of Korean Tapas in our country, which is indeed a fresh and exciting addition to our vibrant local dining scene.

Apart from the novel concept of tapas, Sarang will also be rolling out Korean cocktail pairings of Soju and Makgeolli, for a whole new dining experience that you will appreciate with Master Chef YY's creative food creations.

Sarang Japchae $7

This classic Korean dish of sweet potato noodles is one that I always order at Korean eateries and I am most pleased to say that Sarang's version is by far one of the best I have had. Bouncy, chewy and QQ with a slight sticky texture, these noodles were spot-on and every bite was peppered with a whiff of sesame oil that was most appetizing. Complimented by the crunch of shredded carrots, onions and black fungus, this dish was every bit as colourful in its presentation as it was in flavor.

Spicy Chewy Rice Cake $7

Putting his own unique spin on a popular street snack in Korea, Chef YY's spicy rice cakes are different from what you may be used to, especially if the instant version of Tukbokk is what you usually have. With a stronger intensity of flavors that interplays and injects excitement to your palate, these cylindrical rice cakes are sure to whet an appetite. But for those who are not too accustomed to spicy foods, you have been warned.

Kimchi Pancake $8

I personally do not fancy Kimchi Pancakes but I gave this a nibble and ended up finishing a few more portions. Delightfully crisp and best eaten when still warm, these pancakes were brimming with prawns, squid, onions and of course kimchi. Paired off with the dipping sauce of rice vinegar and soy sauce, this was a savory appetizer that will have you wanting seconds and thirds.

Sarang Meat Lover’s Platter $42

Three different ways of preparing three different types of meats, this platter is a must-order for any meat lover. And while it might be recommended for sharing, you may actually be tempted to finish this all by yourself because it is that good. The standouts had to be the flame-grilled steak dressed with Kimchi cream sauce and the succulent tender chicken pieces in Yuzu sauce. Unfortunately I did not quite take to the wine-marinated pork belly which was a tad too tough and dry.

We ordered -
1. kimchi belly pork - though I would have liked it with a lot more soup (like the kimchi chigae which I always like and order at Aburiya & Watami), this belly pork was differently done (not just boiled like in kimchi chigae to add base to the soup) & very much better, had very good “mouth-feel”(口感) in texture and taste.

I guess the chef was a bit modern in his approach so his banchan was not quite the traditional big spread of side dishes, his sotong (squid) was accompanied by thin white noodles & this galbi dish also came with a cup of smooth potato puree.
The meal comprising 3 very good dishes & banchan came to just S$34nett (about S$26++) using the deal.com vouchers. The service was just ok. I think the prices were actually quite fair for the quality of food offered but less the satisfaction of a good banchan & nicer ambience & better service, so I am unlikely to frequent soon without the voucher discounts.

The interior decor was very clean cut without any fanciful decors. Indoor tables were almost fully occupied on a Saturday eaarly evening.Kimchi was nice, they should take away the peanuts and give us more kimchi Spicy steak was not spicy, the sauce was, and it had a tinge of sweetness too. Mash potato that you see at the left side of the pic was very smooth and creamy, almost like pudding.I am sure it was a good cut of beef as ithe texture of the meat remained tender although it was well done

I am sure it was a good cut of beef as ithe texture of the meat remained tender although it was well done. It could be so much better if it's done in medium or medium rare. I had requsted the steak to be done in medium but the waitress said it depended on the cook and couldn't promise us.

It's kimchi soup with bacon, sausages, some tofu, some veg and rice cake slices. Behold, this pot of orangy mess was damn delicious!! It wasn't very spicy as it appeared to be, there's a interesting and addictive sweetness in it which I couldn't describe. It's like, the more we ate, the more we want. Never know kimchi soup can be this good.

Fresh fruit cocktail with soju looks interesting. The Gangnam style cartoon had caught our attention.

We ordered water-melon cocktail and it was not disappointing. Love it!

Had my dinner with my girlfriend at Sarang last weekend. As it was still early, not much crowd .Yu zi Drink - Cool and refreshing Side dishes - consist of kimchi, sauteed peanut. - Marinated Beef - Served on a hot pan, but to my disappointment, it was quite cold when it was served. Korean vermicelli - Very well cooked. One of the best dishes here. Seafood Pan Cake - Quite a huge portion and was filled with seafood. Korean Ginseng Chicken Soup - Definitely not the best that i had. Too blend.
