One of the best Nasi Lemak  Smile Aug 30, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Malay | Hawker Centre | Halal

There are two famous nasi lemak stalls in Adam Road Food Centre, side by side. One of them is the first shop of the food centre, this one is the second. Ironically, I find that the better one is in second place.

Most of the time when you're there you ought to be prepared to queue up for a good twenty minutes, because many people come in line not just to order one plate, or two boxes, but a party-load of it. That just shows how good it is.

The rice is always at such a good texture, though I find that its taste can be quite a hit and miss sometimes, and lacks that bit of coconut flavour to it. But Selera Rasa more than makes up for whatever's lacking with such good sambal chilli, so the rice becomes a little matter.

The gold is in the chicken. The colour is so wonderfully golden, you only have to look at it to tell that it will be such a crispy treat. Inside the chicken is still so juicy and so tender, though a little oily, and it makes you wish you had more than one on your plate - which is why I always ask for two.

Overall, this place ranks as one of the best nasi lemak in Singapore.

Good but expensive roasted meat Smile Aug 30, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Coffeeshop | Roasted Meat

Here to try the 2.5million bucks duck rice hoping that the craze would already have died out but apparently not. The queue still snakes onto the road and there's a mix of army officers (no idea where they came from), office workers, old uncles and aunties and then us the odd young couple out.

Then again, there is no discrimination when it comes to roast meat. How can anyone not like the crackling glossy skin of the duck or that buttery melt in your mouth fat that is so irresistible.

A soup, 3 kinds of meat and 2 plates of rice cost us $27. Pricey but am not absolutely sure if its worth it. The duck may be a little dry but the char siew is to die for. The black caramelized dark sauce is great on the meats and on the rice as well. I absolutely dig the rice which is moist and really fluffy. You must order the char siew. It's fantabulous. The salted veg duck double boiled soup is also a great accompaniment to the meal.

However, all been said, i'd reckon i'll get the same great char siew at Fatty's at ABC market and at a fraction of the cost.

One of the better ramen in town Smile Aug 30, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Ramen

Santouka is consistently touted as one of the best ramen places in Singapore and its popularity was clearly evidenced by the queue that was forming when I went there for dinner. Despite the crowd, service was good as the staff were efficient without being brusque. This really is a get in, eat, get out sort of dinner though so if you're looking for a more relaxed pace, you're better off elsewhere. It really is all about the ramen at Santouka.

While Santouka really does serve up a good bowl of ramen, I do think there are better ramen places out there. I've learnt, though, that ramen preferences can be very subjective. So while I found the ramen a bit too chewy on the chewy-springy spectrum, some of my other friends loved it. And while I thought the broth (the Shio broth) was super tasty, some of my other friends thought it was a bit too rich and salty.

But we all did agree that the egg was tasty, though the yolk a bit too gelatinous. And the pork cheek was fantastic and and just the right proportion of fat. The portion is quite large though. So if you're ordering the pork cheek ramen, I would recommend ordering the smaller portion if you don't have a huge appetite.

Nice ice cream in the heartlands Smile Jul 31, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Café | Desserts and Cakes | Ice Cream and Gelato

Creamier joins the artisan ice cream scene but with one difference - it chose to locate at Toa Payoh amidst barber shops and laundromats. I really like the fact that it chose an old HDB estate to set up shop because it breathes life into the area.

The cafe and ice cream parlor is also very nicely decorated, having design background owners. It's cosy and filled with small tables and chairs. The smell of fresh ice cream and coffee is also alluring.

The flavors of ice creams are really wide-ranging as well. They have exotic ones all the way to the usual, but I urge you to go try them yourself! Of course the ice cream quality is also very good. in fact it ranks up there with Salted Caramel, and wins it when it comes to experimentation.

Nice Bah Kut Teh Smile Jul 31, 2013
Categories : Singaporean Chinese | Restaurant | Bak Kut Teh

If you're looking for an authentic place to get your fix of ba ku the, Song Fa is the place to go. Located just opposite the Central shopping mall at Clark Quay, it's in a sufficiently accessible spot that isn't too far flung in the heartlands of Singapore. The joint itself looks like an ungraded version of the usual coffee shop stalls - with air conditioning and occupying up to 2 units at the corner of the building.

They serve the usual soup with generous helpings of succulent meat with the delicious 'boiled-all-day' taste that our grannies used to make for us, and soups are refillable! It's a nice homey touch to a modern day looking restaurant that adds a dash of nostalgia of the olden days. The soup is not too peppery and still thick enough with both spices and meat, although i prefer my soup more spicier.

Their side dishes are also yummy and the pork innards are a must try.
