According to their facebook page this is their main shop. They have another outlet at Block 206 Toa Payoh North.

Wide array of fried and non fried items to choose from but their specialty is their homemade deep fried stuff - ngo hiang, meatballs, crispy wanton and stuffed bean curd. You cannot go wrong if you pick any of their deep fried items! It is the well seasoned minced meat that makes everything yummy. After picking your poison you need to tell them where you are sitting. No payment required until they bring your food to you and service was friendly and fast.

Soup is clear and tasty and chilli and sweet sauce are standard fare.

Good Kway Chap Smile May 31, 2013

Categories : Teochew | Hawker Centre

Kuey Chap is loosely translated as cake mixed. Though the 'cake' here refers to broad rice noodles cooked in a soy sauce based pork broth, served with a mixed dish of pork innards, fish cake and stewed eggs.

This is the quintessential teochew comfort food for me. The kway chap itself is just perfect, not overcooked, its texture is just nice, smooth and just the right thickness. The broth is also light, not oily and not too salty. It's just nice if you're looking for a soupy dinner. Best of all, the innards are clean and fresh tasting.

I recommend eating in because everything is so fresh and is best eaten hot on the spot! There is often a long queue because the owners makes everything from scratch, nothing pre-made or reheated. You'll get your every bowl of kway chap cooked just before served to you. Of course, most importantly, it's cheap and great value for money!

Old School Carrot Cake Smile May 31, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Singaporean Chinese | Hawker Centre | Sweets/Snack

There are many good carrot cake stalls in Singapore. Personally, I've always preferred the white carrot cake. And one of my favourite stall is in Toa Payoh where I grew up. Similar to Come Daily Hokkien Mee at the same food centre, I have practically grew up with both stalls. And over the years, I also watched the older generation pass the baton on to their younger generation. Fortunately, standards have not dropped one bit.

A good carrot cake to me is a combination of fresh home made carrot cake, eggs and chye poh (pickled radish). Like any other good stall, Chey Sua still makes their own carrot cake. You can see them being portioned out of small aluminium bowls which they have been using since they first opened. What I particularly like about their carrot cake is one side is fried practically to a crisp while the other side is only lightly fried. So what you get is a crispy surface and white carrot cake all the way through. The portion of eggs is generous and the chye poh is just right, not too salty. And of course the chilli is just nice too, not too overpowering or oily.

They are opened from 6am till 1pm everyday except on Mondays. Perfect for a weekend breakfast.

Sinful Hokkien Mee Smile May 29, 2013

One of the best dishes in the world that the Hokkiens have given us is the humble Hokkien mee which, in my opinion, is the most under-rated of Singaporean dishes. Every tourist knows about the chicken rice and the chilli crab but not all of them are as familiar with Hokkien mee.

When I first came to taste the Hokkien Mee here, I did not think much of it. However when I re-visited the second time round, I was very pleasantly surprised at how good it was. The main characteristic of this Hokkien mee was how gooey it was, which intensified the taste of crustacean in the stock. The noodles were well fried and the uncle used lard and belly pork strips here.

While the prawns and sotong were tiny, I was fine with them because to me, because the mee is the main hero here. What you are going for is that satisfying, full flavoured, fried noodle dish.

Reasonable Japanese Food OK May 23, 2013
Categories : Japanese | Sukiyaki/Shabu Shabu

Went to the Tontei Pork Restaurant at Nex Mall. It was during dinner time and we waited about 30 mins before a table was available. The service staff were proper and nice as they keep coming out to check on us in the queue.

Ordered the Set meal that comes with the breaded pork fillet and oden. It also comes with chawanmushi as well as a small serving of udon.

The pork fillet is pretty crispy and nice but its the chawanmushi that beat all hands down. Silky soft and with lots of ingredients inside. It's a waste that its only that small a serving.

Overall, reasonable japanese food with a crew of friendly staff, but the price is abit steep in my opinion. Tontei still did not make me want to give up returning to Kazokutei at Junction 8.
