Walking around Newton circus food centre, there's a good 8-10 stalls that sell oyster omelette and carrot cake. Which one to pick?

This one seemed to be more popular, based on past reviews. But my suggestion, find one that still uses lard.. if you can.. Without lard, everything just tastes so bland.

1. Oyster Omelette $5
They were very generous with the oysters, The egg was crispy on the top layer, but on the bottom layer, it was soggy and was very mushy. I didn't quite like it in the end. If you want really good oyster omelette, try Kim Keat at Bradell.

2. Carrot Cake White/black $4

Even though their sign boards still says the carrot cakes are sold in $3 portions, They have increased their prices. The black had alot more egg and was sweet. The white wasn't crispy and tasted bland. Overall, another upsetting local dish

Overall, very disappointing 3 dishes. Definitely won't be back. If I had non-muslim visitors visiting singapore for the first time, I would definitely bring them else where to savour the goodness of oyster omelette and carrot cake.

Overly hyped chicken and waffles Cry Feb 09, 2015
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : American | Bars/Lounges | Burgers and Sandwiches

You can't miss this! Coming along Victoria St.

The Beast is a pretty small shop, with a long perimeter which they use to expand their seating area. So don't expect to be seated in an air-conditioned cafe.

The interior only has bar top seating.

Here's their sunday brunch menu.

1. Bacon Maple Donut $5

I was really looking forward to this, even though this sounded so sinful. It arrived on a plate with strawberries, which were quite sour. The bacon on the top, being drenched in maple syrup tasted like bak kwa. I quite liked it. But as you bite into the donut, this is where the disappointment hits you.
Too dense, and thick.

Too dense, and thick.

It felt like I was biting into a very hard piece of cardboard. It was so hard, this donut was fried for too long and it just wasn't nice. This was quite saddening, as I had high hopes for this.

2. Fried Chicken and Waffle $20

Having tried other chicken and waffles offering in Singapore, everyone told me to try this one out as it was the most authentic? Having lived in the US for a few years. Nothing about this strikes me as authentic. Where's the coleslaw?

Okay, at least the syrup is still here with the chicken! The waffle looked so pale, when it first arrived I had thought of asking them to heat it in the waffle iron longer? The waffle looked so white!

The chicken was crispy and succulent. We had a choice between thigh and breast meat. We went for the thigh which was their more popular choice. The waffle was too light and airy, it felt like you were biting into air pocket. It was not crispy at all. Another total disappointment. This is by far the worst waffle I had every had.

I felt like I had wasted my time coming here, there's way better options in Bukit Ho Swee and Dhoby Ghaut!

After a GREAT experience at Rice&Fries last weekend, I decided to head back there with more friends to try more ice cream flavours.
View from Kembangan Mrt

View from Kembangan Mrt

You can actually see Rice&Fries from the entrance of Kembangan MRT, and it's maybe a short 200m walk there. But the shop was so quiet for a saturday afternoon. I hope their business picks up for dinner time!

I decided to order more waffles with ice cream again since I liked it so much last weekend. But the experience this week was totally different.

1. Waffles With Ice cream (Honey&Fig and Hokkaido Cream)

The Honey&Fig ice cream was quite sweet. I really liked that I could taste the sweetness of the honey. Not as sweet as their salted caramel flavoured ice cream.

The hokkaido cream didn't taste as creamy/milky as I had expected, just think of it as a milk ice cream that is sponsored by the Health Promotion Board, because it's like a low-sugar ice cream.
burnt waffle

The biggest dissapointment by far was that the waffles were BURNT! So crispy and hard that we couldn't even cut it with a knife, it was like a Julie's or Khong Guan's cream cracker!! It was ridiculous. Not to mention, they served both our fries and waffles at the same time. Seriously? They expected us to eat both at the same time?

Last week, they had it all right. Great waffles and they had the brains to serve the ribs first and then the waffles and ice cream.

2. B.F.F $14.90
Decent truffle fries

Decent truffle fries

So we ordered this to share amongst us as a snack, as we had already had our lunch. I can't remember what all the sauces were but there was tartar sauce and cheese sauce. The fries were okay. The truffle fries smelt awesome and tasted decent. It wasn't bad and wasn't fantastic either.

3. Honey Lemon Tea $3.40

Honest truth, it tasted just liked Pokka Honey Lemon Tea.

I really had better expectations of this place. I like their ice creams, but no more waffles for me. Maybe the lava cake next or maybe their caramelized bananas. just NOT WAFFLES!

Groupon $11.80 crabs.  Cry Jan 10, 2015
Categories : Singaporean Chinese | Seafood | Zi Char | Kids-Friendly

So I bought 3 Groupons for House of Seafood crabs, seeing that they supposedly sold thousands on Groupons. I couldn't find any reviews on these "Groupon" crabs and figured that since 2,000 people have bought them, it should be pretty safe to try them. But I was wrong. 2,000 otherpeople were cheated!

So as you can see all 3 Groupons were redeemed immediately after I handed them over to the staff that evening.

And after the meal, they still charged us a hefty sum at almost another $12 per crab for GST and service charge, making each crab $24!!

Luckily I had rejected their crackers and other snacks they put on the table, which I read on Yelp that they charge even more money for!

Okay with all that said and done... Let's go into details about the food.

Their menu is a huge heavy magazine/booklet with the huge picture that says, voted best black pepper crab.
Different flavoured crabs

Different flavoured crabs

They have tons of flavours of crabs. We decided to try, one butter, one black pepper and one tang hoon. But the waitress insisted to get 2 crabs of the same flavour because she said they were very small, but out of the 3 of us, only 2 of us eat crabs, so we said we wanted to try 3 different flavours. It took some persuasion and she finally let us have 3 different flavours. Sounds like nasty sales tactics here.
So so.. chicken was dry

So so.. chicken was dry

We ordered the honey chicken which was said to be their best seller, but the chicken was abit dry.. Nothing fantastic.
NOT FRESH!! $11.80 groupon + $12 service charge /GST

NOT FRESH!! $11.80 groupon + $12 service charge /GST

The worst of the 3 crabs, the meat was hard and was very different to get the meat off the shell as the meat was constantly stuck on the shell.. The sauce was too peppery, and we didn't enjoy it. This crab took us ice ages to get the meat!! So not worth the time and effort.
$11.80 groupon + $12 service charge /GST

$11.80 groupon + $12 service charge /GST

Compared to mellben or uncle leong, this tasted very garlicky and the colour looked more like salted egg sauce, it didn't have enough sauce for our fried mantous. But this was fresher than the black pepper crab. The sauce had the right about of sweetness and saltiness. But uncle leong or mellben is still way better this.
$11.80 groupon + $12 service charge /GST + $5 for noodles

$11.80 groupon + $12 service charge /GST + $5 for noodles

The freshest and biggest of the 3 crabs. Each groupon crab was supposedly 400-600g but this one you could tell from the top shell that it was at least 700g or so.. The sauce disappeared quickly as the noodles soaked up the sauce, and the noodles were nice and there were mushrooms in there. The noodles ended up tasting very peppery as the sauce dried up. The waitress was courteous enough to serve us the noodles as they saw us struggling to serve the noodles, whilst all our fingers messed up with crab sauce. Although we did pay a hefty price for their service indeed.
Not freshly fried, but they come out very quickly

Not freshly fried, but they come out very quickly

Fried mantous were priced at 70 cents each but they were not freshly fried and once you place your order for the mantous, they come out in a split second. It's quite upsetting that they're not crispy. At least they're not oily either.

Our spread for 3 people. $36 Groupon  + $50 payment worth of food.

Located on the 3rd floor of upper serangoon shopping center.

The whole shopping center looks pretty dead and you can see that this is pretty much the only shop opened on a friday night.

All in all the crabs were not all fresh, and we felt cheated by the ridiculous service charge and GST. One time is enough, never coming back here. Uncle leong is so much more value for money!

Pizza delivery on a sunday Cry Jan 05, 2015
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Pasta | Halal

So it my friends' birthday and we decided to get some pizza delivered to her place.

Their iconic logo with the infamous 241 telephone hotline. We ordered 4 pizzas for about $50. They were just the small sized ones. Maybe just enough for 2-3 people to share.
Soggy and tasteless beef pepperoni

Soggy and tasteless beef pepperoni

The pepperoni pizza was strangely tough, the crust was soggy and pretty bad. We ate it as soon as it came. Maybe this pizza should come with re-heating instructions? It was a let down.

The haiwaiian pizza wasn't too bad, the pineapples were sweet and so was the ham, so it was a pretty sweet-tasting pizza. The crust wasn't as bad as the beef. So it was more edible and it was clearly the winner as it was the first pizza to be demolished.

And even though the pizzas are two for one.. It's not like a buy one get one free pizza. They jack up the prices of the pizza so it's actually about the same as other pizza shop offerings.
