Halal Western Fusion Food OK Feb 23, 2016
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Food Court | Halal

Located in the food court area of Big Box is I am Legend. Since land is considerably cheaper in far sides of Singapore like Jurong East, you will find ample space in this huge food court. I am Legend has a corner all to itself and it's easily accessible from the escalator landing.

The cook himself took the time to explain the inspirations for each dish, from which you could tell he was extremely passionate about. I am Legend serves up Halal Western Fusion food that prides themselves with the freshest ingredients.

1. Creamy Salted Egg Yolk with Prawns Pasta $15.90

First up was the salted egg yolk with prawn pasta. The chef explained that salted eggs were premiumly sourced rather than from neighbouring south-east asian locations. The use pure salted egg rather than artificial flavouring. The salted egg yolk sauce for me was a bit too thick, I would've preferred it to be thinner, so that I could spread it more evenly throughout all the pasta noodles. They were extremely generous with the crunchy prawns but it still fails to justify the $15.90 pricing, considering this is a food court.

2. Seafood Aglio Oglio $11.90

The seafood aglio olio was the greatest disappointment as it was way too spicy and it had leftover residue of either oil, or something that looked like water. I couldn't taste anything other than pure pepper in this dish. The noodles were al dente but everything else on the plate wasn't up to standard.

3. Grilled Garoupa $15.90 *must try*

Salvation for I am Legend started to arrive with the grilled garoupa. Drizzled with the legendary sauce which was sweet and slightly spicy. This reminded me of some type of Peranakan cuisine. I liked the presentation of the Garoupa and the fish meat was soft and tender. You could tell I am Legend was indeed serious when they elaborated the freshness of ingredients used.

4. Premium Fish & Chips (Dory Fillet) $12

You have a choice of fish when it comes to Fish & Chips at I am Legend. The fish tasted okay, nothing fantastic and same goes for the chips. I just wished that they made some fusion twists for this extremely common dish.

5. Lamb Chop *must try*

I liked the lamb chops here. Though it may look a bit over cooked, the meat still tasted tender and juicy. The onion rings were huge and though this dish is typically served with french fries, you can request for onion rings instead.

Upon your first bite into the onion ring, you will immediately know that these onion rings were made from scratch! The batter isnt' over powering and the onion ring is a legit full ring of onion! The sauce for the lamb chop tasted like a mild black pepper sauce and it brought out the charreed flavour of the lamb chop. Good job guys! This is a winner!

6. Truffle Fries

The truffle fries had a very strong and fragrant truffle oil smell that literally took over the entire food court. No Kidding! The portion of fries were decent for sharing. But again, nothing to shout about.

Overall: Decent halal western food with some fusion twists. If you're shopping in Big Box, do give them a go, especially the lamb chop or grilled garoupa, skip the other western food choices that you can find elsewhere. Also give a shout out to the chef and friendly staff of I am Legend!

New Ice Cream Parlour in AMK! OK Feb 01, 2016
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Ice Cream and Gelato

Scoopz recently moved here from Upper Thomson and I'm glad they did! They're in a great vicinity just opposite St. Nicholas Girls and I'm sure tons of the students would head over here for their mid-afternoon snack!

Scoopz is a dedicated ice cream parlour which means, they literally only serve ice cream and a short selection of drinks and some cakes in the cake display. They do not serve savoury food or main courses.

The shop is actually pretty decently sized. It can fit maybe 20 pax or even more, with the outdoor seating.
Choose your ice cream!

Choose your ice cream!

They have a variety of ice cream flavours and unlike most ice cream parlours, they charge a uniform price for all flavours, so no premium flavours etc. I tried a number of their flavours and the staff was very patient and friendly.
Watching your waffle get made!

Watching your waffle get made!

I watched the staff make the batter and make the waffle just metres away from my table. The aroma of the waffle cooking in the iron was so heavenly!
pick a game

pick a game

While waiting for your waffle, you may choose to play some games such as saboteur, old school card games like SNAP or Snacks and leaders and even monopoly deal. I'm sure the school-going kids in this area would make this their daily chill-out spot!

Classic waffle with horlicks and coconut ice cream

The horlicks ice cream tasted great when I tried it at the ice cream counter, but half way through it, I realized it was very gerlat and sweet. So I gave it a miss in the end. The horlicks was smooth with little bits of horlicks powder all clumped up, to give it a slight bite.

The coconut ice cream was more like a sorbet. It wasn't creamy and the coconut flavour was very evident in every bite. I felt that it could be less icy with the coconut flavour toned down a bit.

The waffle was my favourite. It was very crispy and stayed crispy throughout the dining experience and on the inside, it was very light. It wasn't fluffy or crispy inside. It was just airy, which meant that you could tons of these waffles and not fill full!

Iced earl grey lychee drink

I had some hopes for this dink, up until the drink arrived. The drink had 90% ice and one lychee from a can. I had to mix it up and it just tasted like lychee syrup from the can that the lychee came from. It was super cold, due to the sheer amount of ice.

Overall : Yes I would come back for the waffles. Just the waffles! The service was okay and the staff were friendly and cheerful smile Which warms my heart everytime I step into an ice cream parlour!

Be Curious!! OK Jan 21, 2016
Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Café | Desserts and Cakes | Coffee | Brunch

Located along the busy stretch of prinsep street is curious palette! From the owners of stranger Union is curious palette! Opened in 2015, this interesting and rustic looking cafe can accommodate huge groups of diners in its two storey shop house cafe!

Looking at the menu, they offer soft shell crab burger, chicken, western fares as well as interesting sounding buttermilk waffles and hot cakes that have taken over Instagram!!

They also have a wide selection of cakes. All very vibrantly colored to emphasize the flavours!! The range from $8 and up!

1. Matcha Azuki Cake $8.50++

I'm a green tea lover and this cake was calling my name. Although, I did feel that this cake was too articially coloured. The green was too vibrant for my eyes. Nonetheless, I dug in and disappointingly, I couldn't really taste the green tea but the azuki (red beans) sweet and pretty much ended up causing the cake to taste like a red bean cake. I didn't even bother to finish up this cake. Skip this cake and get the earl grey lavender manjari cake instead, save your $10.

2. Nachos Con Carne $12.90++ *Highly Recommended*

With slow-cooked hand-pulled pork, sour cream, jalapeno and melted cheddar. I really liked the pulled pork here, it was well seasoned, tender and also extremely flavourful. The salsa here was abit too sour for my liking. This dish could've used a bit more cheddar, there really wasn't enough cheddar, more than 3/4 of the nachos didn't have cheese on it. Probably one of the most underated dish at Curious Palette, as I hardly saw anyone ordering it! Do try it! You will like it! Truffle fries are overated anyways! Have some meat with your carb!

3. Cafe Mocha $5.50++

A nice cup of mocha to perk me up during my later afternoon at Curious Palette. A good balance of chocolate and coffee. This fared alot better than the iced mocha, which literally was too diluted before the ice even began to melt.

4. Iced Mocha $6.90++

A very typical iced mocha, nothing fancy. It had chocolate powder on top of it. It tasted kinda of diluted, not a very strong chocolate, milk or coffee taste. I was kind of disappointed in this drink, considering the price that you pay and the fact they they had easily 4 staff behind the coffee counter.

5. Earl Grey Lavender Manjari Cake $8++ *Highly Recommended*

This was the first cake that caught my eye in the cake display. It had a slight blue-ish purple colouring on the top. There were several layers to the cake, which the staff described as "chocolate layers" And indeed they were. They werechocolate ganache layers that had a lavender aroma and taste! The fragrance of the lavender was subtle but yet enough for me to pick it up! The cake was on the slightly dryer side, wasn't as moist as I had hoped it to be. But everyone on the table agreed, it was one of the most interesting cake we had ever come across!

6. Pina Colada Tea $7.50

This was a very interesting tea, as it tasted very fruity and even without sugar, there was a hint of sweetness. The sweet aroma itself, made me wonder about what ingredients were used to make this tea! Served in a tea pot, it's a pretty tea set that comes with this order.

7. Berry Ricotta Hotcake $12.90++ *Highly Recommended*

With vanilla bean ice cream, fresh seasonal berries, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seed. These are breakfast pancakes summer-style, ridiculously light, and lemony somehow! They are crispy like a biscuit on the edges and super soft and fluffy on the inside. Almost like eating a freshly baked moist cupcake!

If you imagine the flavour of cheesecake combined with a texture that's best, if wordily, described as a kind of souffled griddle cake, you're somewhere near getting the measure of these.

In my view, this is their fabulous delicacy and, besides, there is some accompanying fruit allows you to delude yourself that these are healthy.

8. Spam Fries $11.90++

These spam fries served with Kaffir lime mayo, which tasted like plain mayo. No lime fragrant or taste was evident. The spam fries though were slightly softer and tender in texture in comparison to other spam fries I've tried. The edgers weren't crispy though, they were just hard.

Overall : It's quite expensive considering you have to pay 7% GST and 10% service charge. It can get quiet full, so do call and make a reservation. The food isn't all that great. Although I didn't try any mains, I did see alot of people order the soft shell crab at $22++. I would only come here for the Earl Grey Lavender Manjari cake or the Hotcakes.

Sushi by the River! OK Jan 13, 2016
Categories : Japanese | Seafood | Omakase

The restaurant itself has a great location, overseeing the river with decent lighting indoors as well as outdoors. There's a number of japanese eateries suddenly sprouting out on boat quay so don't mix them up!

A fine lager for a sushi meal, it has a very mild in flavour to me, with a slight aftertaste.

1. Appetizer

For appetizers we had Edamame $5.50, Sardine Namban Duke $5.50 as well as a salad.
I didn't try the edamame but the sardine was fried and then marinated with a sauce and topped with carrots. The fish could've been crispier. The boiled vegetables were also very tasty, mixed in the sauce.
2. Dashi-Maki Eggs $12

I liked this japanese style omelette. The omelette itself was fluffy, soft and sweet. I didn't quite get the tiny fishes on the top, as I couldn't taste it either. I would say that these slices of omelette are alot bigger than the ones you would normally get at a sushi bar, but at $12 for 3 pieces. It's really pricey.
3. Singapore Roll (Original) $13 small (4 pieces) / $23 medium (8 pieces)

Wrapped with crab, avocados, tomatoes, and seasoned with chilli flakes. This was a mild tasting roll. I could barely taste the chilli, but the avocado together with the rice was really nice. Not too sure what is so "Singapore" about this roll though.
4. Sashimi combination

The salmon was fresh and so was the other sashimi. I really really really LOVED THE SCALLOP. It was the best item on the plate! It was so soft, smooth and literally melted in my mouth. A baby with no teeth could totally eat this! (But please don't harm any babies)

5. Assorted Tempura $20 (for one person)

The tempura batter was crispy and yet light. I tried an ebi (prawn), corn and a mushroom. All were good, but nothing really stood out for me. The tempura comes with a salt mix, that you dip the tempura in.

There wasn't really a tempura sauce to dip the tempura in. I just watched as others at the dining table, dipped their tempura into the sushi sauce.

Some places that I've had tempura, they were either dripping in oil, or they had a strong smell of oil. These were neither the cases at Taki. I couldn't actually smell the tempura, even when putting it against my nose! Nonetheless, it was still crispy.

6. Sukiyaki $10 (for 100 g)

The wagyu used here was A4 and the marbling was so pretty! Check out my photos. The beef was juicy and tender. The vegetables in the pot were also very flavourful, as they absorbed all the juices from the beef. I pity non beef eaters.

I really loved how the chef put in effort to cut up the watermelon and placed them nicely!

Sake, the Japanese alcoholic beverage made from fermented rice. This was a very smooth and light sake. A great way to end our dinner.

There's a lot of mediocre product out there billed as "the best." In my experience, very few sushi spots compare to Taki in terms of ambience!

The view from the outdoor seats are spectacular, on a cooling evening, it would the ideal place to sit and dine. Otherwise, you can take a table indoors. They have an indoor dining area and a sushi bar counter top that sits a total of maybe 16pax?

The waitress is also dressed in a kimono and walks around the serve you your sake or kirin beer.

Stamford Catering OK Jan 08, 2016
Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Seafood | Halal | Buffet

I've been to several events that had food catered by Stamford catering but never had the time to review it. Unlike specialized caterers, Stamford seems to have been catering for decades and serves to cater for large groups with simple dietary requirements. They aren't the most expensive and nor the cheapest, but you can also pick their cheaper options. They usually have credit promotions as well.

Their honey drumlets are small and easy to eat. The meat was still warm about 1.5horus after arrival and the meat was slightly sweet and though not tender, it was easy enough to peel off the bone.

Their curry puffs were a complete disappointment. Despite having a nice uniform crispy look exterior, it was 50% hollow! There was hardly any ingredients inside!

These halal siew mai tasted just like the typical pork siew mai and they were gone in an instant!

Here's my share of the food.

The fried yam cake was dry and miserable.

Alot of misses and the only hit was the honey drumlet. Even the mee goreng was very oily and tasteless. I've definitely had better experiences with Stamford Catering.
