Seafood hotpot! Smile Sep 30, 2017

Categories : Singaporean Chinese | Seafood

Long Jiang Chinos Situated in the heart of the north, Long Jiang Chinos lies within the quaint and serene ORTO in Yishun, formally Bottle Tree Park. Situated right beside the pond, Long Jiang Chinos brings exquisite and hearty seafood dishes in the surroundings of lush greenery.

Established in 2014, the restaurant is an establishment by Long Jiang Culinary, which has years of experience in the culinary industry.

As it is currently mid-autumn seasion, do check out their mooncakes available for sale in Takashimaya, NEX, Tampines Mall, Vivocity, Lot1 and Junction 8. Or just head down to Long Jiang Chinos at ORTO to enjoy some delightful Chinese cuisine with your mooncakes!

This classic and timeless Teochew traditional mooncake is extremely crispy on the edges with melt in your mouth textured yam paste. These are some of the biggest Teochew mooncakes I’ve ever seen! The single yolk version gives the sweet yam a good mix of pleasure and premium taste. All these “orh nee” yam paste mooncakes are low in sugar. So you can savour without the fear of overdosing on calories from sugar.
When visiting Long Jiang Chinos, be sure not to miss out on its most heart warming dish – Seafood Hotpot ($128). Curated specially by the chef with observance to the different preferences of a family, this dish was born to suit the likings of all ages within a family. Since then, the high raved Seafood Hotpot has since become a signature dish of the restaurant.

Using only premium selection of fish, whole Soon Hock is simmered slowly under a bed of cabbage, ensuring that the fish will not be overcooked while you savour the soupy goodness of the hotpot. Consisting of an assortment of live prawns, clams and squid, these catch of the seas come together to make the ultimate hearty Seafood Hotpot.

The chicken broth was so flavourful and really addictive and the broth is refillable! So don’t be afraid to drink up as much as you like!

Long Jiang Chino’s Cheesy Crab Bee Hoon with Crab Roe ($44.80) is rich, yet not overpowering on the senses. Bee hoon is first specially prepared by the chefs. A homemade stock is reduced and slices of cheese are added. Speak about infusing oriental cuisine with the west! The dish is completed with two whole Indian mud crabs atop. Overturn the shell of the crab and generous, crab roe is unravelled.

Start your meal right with these crispy and delicious Har Chou! Filled with generous ingredients and really freshly fried!
One interesting thing to note about this dish here is, unlike most eateries that serve the fried fish skin with a salted egg sauce, that turns the skin soggy after awhile. At Long Jiang Chinos, they use real salted egg but fried up!

Sake infused Sukiyaki OK May 09, 2017
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Japanese | Sukiyaki/Shabu Shabu

Hailing from the Saitama prefecture of Japan is 60 year old Hibiki, one of the only outlets representing the Hibiki empire outside of Japan! Ask any Japanese living in Saitama, part of the Greater Tokyo region about Hibiki and they will be familiar with this yakitori legend. They have countless kiosks, selling yakitori at train stations and convenient areas, much like the Tori-Q seen in Singapore and serving dining delights at over 30 restaurants. Hibiki at Bukit Timah has recently been taken over by Irene who did a new makeover for the restaurant, leading it to a more purist Japanese direction, as Hibiki is deeply rooted in the culinary culture of the Japanese.

Located along Bukit Timah Road, you could easily drive by this place and miss it, as it is sandwiched between a pizzeria and an Italian restaurant. It has it's own car park, but there's also coupon parking just parallel of it, along Anamalai Road, with free parking on sundays and PH. The menu is printed with English and Japanese, you can easily tell that this restaurant was catered towards the Japanese living in Singapore who miss their authentic Japanese food. Their charcoal grilled items are their signature offerings that require the art of barbecuing to perfection.

1.Sake Shabu-shabu(2 person serving)
The shabu-shabu broth at Hibiki is unique as sake is infused into the aromatic mixture. Served with assorted vegetable platter (White cabbage/Spinach/Shiitake Mushroom/Tofu/Carrot/Konyaku stripes/Japanese Leek)

What do we love about Japanese hot pot? It's a fun communal dining experience, you get SO MUCH variety in your meat and vegetable offerings (think everything from wagyu beef and kurobuta pork to sweet cabbage and shiitake mushrooms), and it's a rather healthy, nutritious dish that doesn't pack in calories.

Kurobuta belly and Kurobuta collar is served here and sweetens up the broth, with every slice. Home made sesame sauce for vegetable dips/Home made ponzu Sauce for Meat to dip with spring onion and spicy raddish smash. To pair up with the Shabu Shabu, we also had Tako Karage, Miso Caesar Salad, Vegetable Sticks and Tempura Moriawase.

The sake flavour is subtle and evaporates so you will only imaginatively taste the sake in the soup, however, there is a lingering sake aroma if you give the soup a good whiff.

4) Hibiki Yakitori 5 Stick Mixture pork and Chicken $22
Hibiki's favorable 5 sticks of mixture Kurobuta and Kampong Chicken mixture sticks.

Ingredients used in the yakitori includes Kurobuta Belly, Kurobuta Collar, Chicken Mid Wing, Homemade minced ball. Every item is carefully cooked to perfection on the charcoal grill, giving them a slightly charred flavour and texture.

5) Hibiki Yakitori 5 Stick Japanese Vegetable $12
Mixture of the Favourite 5 sticks vegetable

My personal favourites were the homemade minced ball, which were so tender and juicy, and also the grilled onions! I never expected grilled onions to taste so good, especially with the miso dip!

6) Tako Karaage
Deep fried special Marinated Octopus. I'm a huge fan of octopus, and this was my first time trying octopus marinated and deep fried in this manner. The outer layer was thick and crisp, giving you a nice crunch. On the inside, you have a sizeable octopus tentacle which has a fresh aroma of the octopus and the marinate. The octopus was well marinated as it was very tasty on it's own!

9) Authentic Japanese Ice cream
Tenpien - Sea salt Ice cream serve with Sweet potatoes stripes
Houji Cha - Roasted Tea Ice cream serve with sweet potatoes stripes
Yaki Imo Ice cream - Grilled Sweet potatoes Ice cream serve with sweet potatoes stripes
Hibiki's Home made Sweet Potatoes Cake and Sweet potatoes Stripes serve with Vanilla Ice Cream

Overall : Would I come back? Yes! If you are local Singaporean and want to try some Sake infused shabu shabu, or if you are looking to try out some variants of different Sake, do give Hibiki a try! Even for Japanese living in Singapore, I'm quite sure you will be satisfied with the authenticity of the food quality and service at Hibiki.

Oink Don $29.00++ *Highly Recommended*

We highly recommend the Oink Don, if you're very hungry, craving for quality pork and love carbs! Starting from the top, take your pick on Deep Fried Pork Cutlet w/bone, Grilled Pork Chop, Roasted Pork Belly and Pull Pork Carnita. There's so much meat here, I think an entire piglet died for this main course! In all seriousness, the meat were very flavourful, juicy, not one molecule of the variety of meats here was dry. Add on the black pepper cream sauce and every item has a tinge of smooth and delicate peppery flavor.

Check out the thick layer of pulled pork carnita covering the fluffy egg and Sambal Fried Rice w/ Black Pepper Cream and Bacon! The pulled pork is the most tender, most juicy pulled pork ever, definitely took alot of time to slow cook this to perfection! Yea Baby!

Sea Don $35.00++ *Highly Recommended*
This Sea Don comes with a spectacular sight of a Whole Lobster, King Salmon, Squid set above another "treasure", the Seafood Fried Rice w/ Garlic Butter Sauce, Prawns, Scallops, Octopus, Egg. I'll be very honest with you, the seafood fried rice is the best fried rice I have ever tasted. The rice itself has a distinct "wok-hei", and the rice absorbed all the sweetness from the variety of seafood cooked altogether. The crunchy prawns embedded in the rice also provide a nice bite in between the soft and pillowy rice.

Enough about the rice? I could go on for days about the yummy seafood rice, but! The highlight of this dish, the Whole Lobster, showcases the high quality grade ingredients used at the Benjamins. The lobster has a sweet juice crunch and it's easily removed from the shell, a good sign of the meat being fresh. The salmon fillet is huge, it's actually longer than the bowl itself!

Molten Lava Cheese Burger $25.00++

Probably the next new hyper on social media is this Molten Lava Cheese Burger, served with a Choice of Fried Chicken Cutlet, Soft Shell Crabs, Beef. The soft shell crab here is also huge, I'm starting to realize that everything served here at The Benjamins is on the generous side! The cheese comes oozing on and it's great as a dipping sauce for the potato tater tots.

Pizza Burger $28.00++ *Highly Recommended*

Brand new on the menu is the Pizza Burger. The Benjamins takes pride in making their ingredients in-house, such as this Beef Patty, Pepperoni, served with a fusion of Black Olives, Grilled Artichoke, Spinach, Monterey Jack, Mild Cheddar. The minced beef patty has a good mix of meat, breadcrumbs, fats and seasoning making it extremely delicious and addictive. This meat patty looks to be approx 250grams.

Overall : The Benjamin's continue to amaze our tastebuds and eyes with their innovative creations. Definitely try out the Sea Don, Oink Don and their smoothies, I'm quite confident you cannot find anything quite like these items in any other eatery in Singapore.

Mango & Lime New Flavour! Smile Jan 27, 2017
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Portuguese | Steaks and Grills

Located on the 4th floor of Plaza Singapura with 11 stores islandwide, Nando’s is here, serving up Halal Grilled chicken choices along with a variety of sauces, like the 100 over year old Peri Peri sauce.

The dining area is pretty huge and great for large groups. Nando’s also serves up a variety of family friendly food and desserts, so there’s something for everyone.

I’m invited to Nando’s today to try out their new Mango & Lime flavour. In the history of Nando’s, this is the first time a new flavour has been introduced. So let’s see what makes it so special!

There’s a platter for 4, which you can share the Mango & Lime chicken goodness with your friends and family.

There’s also a burger or even a Espetada, dangling for all to see and devour!

Mango & Lime Full Platter $44.90++

Straight to business, we started off with the Mango & Lime Grilled Chicken Platter. Mango & Lime sauce is touted to be between the lemon & herb and mild flavoured sauces, so it’s the last stage of sauce before you get to the spicier Peri Peri! I was expecting some spiciness here but there was none. If anything, I felt that the lemon & herb had a stronger kick of spiciness! This Mango & Lime flavour is definitely child-friendly!

The flavour of the mango & lime had a more distinctive mango than lime taste. There was a lingering mango aroma from each bite. The chicken as always at Nandos, was tender fresh and overflowing with juicy goodness but without the oil!

Served with a choice of sides, we picked garlic bread and wedges. The garlic was so good! Evenly buttered and grilled to perfection! The wedges were crisp and well-seasoned.

2. Tropical Fruitea $4.90++

A tropical medley of mango and lime, infused with orange juice and iced lemon tea. This was a very refreshing drink though it got a bit concentrated at the bottom of the glass.

3. Grilled Chicken Cataplana $18.90++

Served in an authentic cooper dish with Peri-Peri chicken thighs, grilled seasonal vegetables, spicey rice and cataplana sauce. This is pretty much a portuguese chicken rice that is very colourful and flavourful. The chicken thigh pieces tasted slightly dry but the rice was very tasty and moist. The rice texture was almost towards the mushy side, but still palatable for me. The charred vegetables were the highlight of this dish!

Mushrooms, carrots, capsicum and more! I pierced each slice of vegetable with my fork and I thoroughly enjoyed them. This dish was served with the Mild sauce and this is the spiciest level that I can tahan. Any higher, and it would be a torture for me.

4. Mango & Lime Espetada $19.90++ (1 side) / $21.90++ (2 sides)

Skewered tender marinated chicken thighs and fresh peppers with a Mango & Lime twist. Beautifully presented. The chicken was flavourful with a tinge of spiciness. If you are having difficulty picking a side, choose the Corn-on-the-Cob! It is buttered so generously, it is overflowing with juices as you nibble onto the corn! It’s so good! I would actually come back to Nando’s for this.

5. Peri-Peri Soup $5.90++ add $2 for chicken

Very authentic and legit mushroom soup with visible mushroom pieces and they are extremely generous with the chicken. You definitely get your $2 worth! The bread here is the same garlic bread you get as a side and it goes excellently with the soup!

6. Chicken Livers & Portuguese Roll $5.90++

The menu description writes

“You haven’t lived until you’ve tried these. On your own or for 2 people to share.”

Eh, I’m not a fan of pork liver and I probably am also not a fan of chicken liver. I’ll just leave it as that, however my dining partners did enjoy this quite a bit.

7. Tangy Lemon Tart $5.90++

On top of just really awesome Chicken, Nando’s also serves desserts such as Tangy Lemon Tart, bottomless froyo and even rainbow cakes! This tangy lemon tart is quite a pretty one, and decent sized enough to be shared. There’s a subtle and pleasant sweetness naturally sweetened with honey and lemon that will guarantee satisfaction to the sweet tooth!

8. Pear-fect Tart $5.90++
My favourite dessert of the night, this pear-fect tart is served with sliced of pear between a caramelized layer. The tart layer has a nice level of sweetness and doesn’t get too overpowering. The flavour of the pear could be tasted in every mouthful.

9. Natas $1.90++ (Portuguese custard tart)
The danish-like pie crust was slightly flaky and crisp, a great texture with a distinct buttery fragrance. The custard was good, but not fantastic. A good choice of a sweet ending to a heavy meal at Nando’s.

Overall : Nando’s is one of those restaurants I’ve seen over the years that doesn’t change it’s menu too often, but when they do, it’s a subtle and yet impactful improvement. This mango & lime flavour gives us non-spicy eaters another flavour to choose from, other than just plain and lemon & herb. The chicken will never fail to meet your expectation of juicy and succulent meats.

A unique dining experience Smile Jan 26, 2017
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Bars/Lounges | Restaurant | Steaks and Grills

Located on Robertson Quay, within M Social Hotel is Beast & Butterflies. This is a dining experience like no other. Loaded with visual dramas composed of chandeliers, lava lamps, video projections, table-top TV screens and even a wall lined with 40 tablets. A meld of Asian and Western influences, creating a new blend of borderless cuisine.

Crispy Spinach $10.00++
These crispy spinach leaves are so addictive. Imagine this to be a plate of potato chips in the shape of spinach leaves. I lost count on the number of leaves I had grabbed. They are so crisp and thin, there's a satisfying crunch in every bite! It's not overly seasoned or salty, but yet flavourful in every crunch!

2. Oyster Shots $10.00++ (A pair)

These Thai infused shooters are guaranteed to whet your appetite. Seafood especially oysters is very sensitive to freshness; if it isn't fresh, you're probably going to get a stomachache, or worse. But the ones at Beast & Butterflies were fresh with Thai goodness!

3. Spam Fries $10.00 ++ *highly recommended*

Definitely a crowd pleases, these spam fries are dry to the bone but yet filled with all the spam aroma and taste! Served with Beast & Butterflies very own home-made Basil Cheese Dip. This is extremely good. No joke, I'll be back for more of this!

4. Duck Crispies $15.00++

Deep fried Duck Rillette Wantons, Pickled cucumbers. Crispy all around and moist in the center where the meat is. Well dressed and full of duck meaty juices.

5. Treasure Pot (Pen Cai) $68++ *Takeaway $84

At the heart of every lunar new year feast is a pen cai filled with luxurious ingredients to help your family bond over good food!

This auspicious dish is filled to the brim with layers of luscious and exquisite ingredients and delicacies such as seafood and meat.

This pen cai would suit most palates as it has a umami flavour that will awake your senses the moment it touches you palate. It is not too salty either, it carries the mushroom goodness from the juices to the other ingredients.

6. Ham Hock (Full) $35.00++ *highly recommended*

Ham hocks are generally tough but flavorful cuts of meat because they contain muscle and tendon as well as a fair amount of fat, which means they need to be cooked fairly slowly at a lower temperature to make the meat tender.

Here, the Ham Hock is served with Asian Sauerkraut and Nam Jim Sauce. The skin is crispy brittle to the point that it is biscuit dry! However, beneath this extremely crispy layer, is the tender and moist layers of juicy pork meat. It is a tough job to achieve both crispy exterior and moist layers on the inside. I loved the juices from the pork fat, it was so good and umami! Definitely give this a try!

7. Wok Fried White Clams $15.00 ++

abt On first look, I thought that this was a blazing hot and spicy dish and I was a tad sad, as I'm a weakling when it comes to spicy food. But fret not! It's lemon grass spices, there to spruce up the flavour of these white clams!

8. Wooly Pork $35.00++

Grilled Mangalica Pork Collar with scallion brown rice galette, kimchi cucumber and bulgogi sauce. One of the juiciest and tender pork meat I've eaten, though a proportion of this meat is pure fat, sinful but still damn SHIOK! This slab of pork meat has clear lines of marbling!

9. Strawberry Basil $10.00 ++

The basil ice cream was very refreshing and yet creamy. Definitely something to try, rather than your common ice cream flavours. I liked the combination of fruits and ice cream, but the butter cake, strangely tasted like bread.

11. Matcha Lava $10.00++

- Warm Green Tea Cake, Matcha Ganache, Azuki Red Beans

Alright, I'll admit, I'm a matcha fan. I go absolutely crazy when I see a matcha lava cake, but I'll be honest and share that it took some effort to make this lava cake "flow". It's not easy making something look good and taste good. So even if it doesn't flow, it's still not going to affect my perception of this chef's platted dessert. However, the matcha lava cake lacked the earthy characteristic and had a strong lingering sweetness. Overly sweet in my opinion. The ice cream helped balanced out the sweetness in this dessert.

13. Beef Ichiran

This beef ichiran is set to get you drooling over the tender colouration of the premium grade meat. It carries a sweet fragrance along with the juices from the fats and meats, this is another highly recommended dish to try at Beast & Butterflies. I am so coming back for more! Chef Bryce sure knows how to choose his meats, marinate them and send them to happy tummies of customers

Don't forget to order one of these unique cocktails at Beast & Butterflies to complete your dining experience!

Overall : Beast & Butterflies has a very interesting concept going on, both on the food, service as well as the decor. A lot of effort has been placed in every corner of Beast & Butterflies. Everything was so worth the calories. Especially the Ham Hock, Beef Ichiran, spam fries and even the pen cai!
