I've heard alot about Hatter Street for years and I've always wanted to go visit Hatter Street, but it was only because of my recent trips to the area that I decided to give it a shot. There's lots of HDB parking in and around the area of Hatter Street. There's even a bus stop right in front of the cafe. i've visited Hatter street twice on a weekday night and at around 8pm or so, it was packed, with people waiting for seats.

Hatter street serves coffee, ice cream and waffles and a small selection of cakes. Some of the cakes like brownies are placed in the cake display on the right. But fancier cakes like rainbow cake is placed right at the cashier, to catch your attention. They're around $7.50 per slice of cake.

While making payment for my whoaffles, I decided to go for the vibrantly coloured rainbow cake. It wasn't part of the plan but, it was too pretty to say no to!

1. Rainbow Cake

The top of the rainbow cake looked like it was painted with ink splattered all over the top covered with a glossy almost gelatin light layer. It was truly pretty. The top was mainly cream cheese. But since the cake didn't sit in the cake display which was a fridge, it may have affected the taste of the cake. My fellow gilr friends and I felt that it was abit dry and we didn't finish the cake at all. The cream cheese was dense and too sweet for my liking. The cream cheese did carry a strong sweet fragrance with it.

2. Whoaffles with Pandan ice cream and Butterscotch Espresso Sauce $9.50

Upon the first bite into the whoaffles, I knew I was sold! The waffles were so crispy on the edges and yet light and airy on the inside. The waffle itself has a slight sweetness to every bite and had a buttermilk aroma. The pandan ice cream tasted literally like kaya and it was smooth, creamy with a dose of coconut sweetness. The waffles are served with some fruits on the side for decoration and the selection of fruits paired well with the waffle. I choose to go with butterscotch espresso so I had never tried such a sauce before. It was thick, sticky and definitely well-named. The name itself describes exactly how it tasted. The espresso aftertaste was very fitting for the pandan ice cream. Overall, this is my favourite combination!

3. Whoaffles with Blue Peppermint and Caramel sauce $9.50

The blue peppermint ice cream caught me eye at the ice cream counter right at the cashier. They are very generous with their scoops of ice cream and do not be afraid to ask for a taster before settling down on your choice of flavours. The staff are very friendly indeed! The smooth texture of the  peppermint ice cream had tons of little minty chocolate embedded all over.

The ice cream was drizzled with caramel sauce that brought the ice cream to a whole new level. The caramel sauce compensated the ice cream with its fragrance and aroma of caramel sweetness.

Overall :  A great place for really really really good crispy waffles and ice cream. Friendly staff to help you along the way of choosing an ice cream flavour or sauce topping. Not too ulu a location to get to

Beautiful Waffles Smile Mar 22, 2016
Categories : French | Café | Desserts and Cakes | Brunch

Les Patisseries has recently moved from Toa Payoh to Upper Thomson. Back at their Toa Payoh outlet, they served waffles, of the same flavours but the presentation wasn't as pretty as they are now. The location here at Upper Thomson faces the main road, but it is also hidden at the edge road near the soya bean store. It is difficult to find parking at this dead end, so I recommend you find parking at the multi-storey hdb parking behind Les Patisseries. This new chic and urban looking Les Patisseries seats a lot customers than their tiny Toa Payoh outlet and they open till 2am on weekends, but the kitchen closes around 930pm, but hey! waffles at 1am, go on down to Les Patisseries!

Taking at look at the menu, it  sure looks like Les Patisseries is a waffle expert, with 10 different types of waffles!!

1. Waffle Banoffee - caramelized banana
2. Belgium Chocolate - chocolate ice cream with chocolate sauce and berries
3. Salted Caramel - salted caramel ice cream with salted caramel sauce and berries
4. Madagascar Vanilla - vanilla ice cream and vanilla sauce
5. Horffles - Horlicks ice cream with horlicks powder and sauce
6. Waffles Isaphan - lychee and rose sorbet with rose waffle
7. Thai Milk Tea & Earl Grey - thai milk tea ice cream on earl grey waffle with condensed milk
8. Chocolate Indulgence - double chocolate chip waffle with chocoate ice cream
9. Maple Waffle - maple syrup , salted butter and fresh berries
10. Summer Berries Waffle - berries compote, fresh berries and maple syrup

Waffles 1-8 come with a macaron and range from $13.90 - $15.90 nett

1. Thai Milk Tea & Earl Grey Waffle $15.90

This was slightly different from the Thai milk tea ice cream waffle I had at at Toa Payoh, before they moved. Back then, it didn't have an earl grey waffle and was slightly cheaper. The waffles were crisp with a fluffy and slightly airy and cakey texture. The earl grey flavour was subtle but you could taste it in the batter, when eaten alone without the thai milk tea ice cream. The thai milk tea ice cream tasted a bit icy to me. It carried off the aroma of thai milk tea and with the condensed milk topped over it, it was on point!

I totally love the presentation of the waffles here. They're a work of art, and dedication to food! I look around and at 9pm on a friday night, almost every table had ordered at least one waffle! The pistachio macaron on the top was kind of tall and small in diameter. It had a crunch into the crust of the macaron and it was beyond expectation. The strawberries and blueberries around the waffle not only enhanced the presentation but it was also a refreshing touch to this sweet delight.

This was definitely an improved version of the thai milk tea ice cream waffle I had a year back! Good job upgrading it!

2. Waffle Isaphan $15.90

The next waffle was the waffle Isaphan, I had also tried this at their previous location and remembered it behind crispy and almost like a toasted bread that became a biscuit. But this was no longer the case! The waffle has a rose (bandung) aroma to it, and the batter carried a mild rose flavour in every bite. The waffle here wasn't as crispy at the earl grey waffle, but it was more moist and slanted to a cake.

The colours of the lychee and rose sorbet ice cream were pleasing to the eyes. As both were sorbets, lactose tolerant friend rejoice! These are their only two ice creams made without milk. Both sorbets were refreshing with a floral and fruity note. Texture wise, it wasn't as smooth as I had hoped it to be. The dish was topped off with edible rose petals, ingenious decorations.  This waffle was more towards the sweet side and definitely satisfied my sweet tooth craving.

Overall : I am excited to come back and try the remaining 8 waffles here at Les Patisseries, there's something for everyone here! Cakes, Pasta, Truffle fries and 10 different waffles with different waffle batters!

S'mores Waffle OK Mar 20, 2016
Categories : Ice Cream and Gelato

S'mores Coffee & Creamery arrived in Upper Thomson late last year and I've been meaning to try them out for the longest time! The have open till 1am on fridays and saturdays woohoo! The shop itself is along same row as Nunsongyee and Habitat. But the bus stop is right in front of it, for those taking a bus to this supper location

The mainly serve coffee and ice cream but they also have 4 main breakfast items that could just satisfy your hunger pangs. As I had arrived on a friday at 10pm, the cafe was rather empty but as time passed, by 11pm, all the tables were filled with young hipster crowds.

They offer a wide array of ice cream flavours, but favourites like sea salt caramel, chocolate, mango sorbet, thai milk tea, cookies and cream were available. There's definitely somethig for everyone here at S'mores.

The colour scheme of S'mores was a very vibrant and colourful set up. The tables and stools were black with a colourful bright pink wall. The shop was well cooled with the powerful air conditioners on a hot and humid friday night.

1. Single Scoop (Thai Milk Tea)

They were very generous with their single scoop, check out the size of this! I'm a thai milk tea fan and this literally tasted like a frozen thai milk tea. No joke. The taste was spot on. It was smooth and creamy, with a subtle sweet fragrance of the condensed milk in the thai milk tea ice cream. Every mouthful made me want to dig my plastic spoon back into the cup for more. This is probably my most favourite thai milk tea ice cream I've ever tried. The ice cream didn't melt too quickly either. It held it's shape and form during my "phototaking" session.

2. Chocolate Milkshake *must try*
A  bit  too  sweet  for  my  liking

A  bit  too  sweet  for  my  liking

This chocolate milkshake was smooth, with a great sugar-rush to perk me up refreshing flavour. It was chilled to the right temperature. The chocolate milkshake itself was extremely thick and I do recommend sharing this. There was a slightly mild milky taste with every sip, but the chocolate was still overpowering the milk taste. This would make a great drink the scorching hot weather. This is definitely a must try for chocoholics!

3. S'mores Waffle $5.80 with earl grey and cookies and cream *must try*

The presentation of this waffle is very different from other establishments. The buttermilk waffles are very thick and pretty much "well-done" or "toasted". They aren't light and airy or dense. They have a texture closer to that of toasted bread, that stays toasted even when all the ice cream has melted!

The toasted marshmallows stole the limelight here. Check out how charred they are on the edges of the waffle! The marshmallows were sweet, slightly too sweet for my friend but for me it was spot on. It wasn't as sweet as the thick chocolate sauce on the bottom waffle.

I really enjoyed their earl grey ice cream. I was in love with the earl grey taste that was very sharp in the smooth ice cream. It also paired well with the crispy waffle. The cookies and cream was on the sweeter side, compared to the earl grey, so for me, coupling the cookies and cream ice cream with the waffle that was topped with the chocolate sauce was too much sweetness overdose for me. If I had the choice, I would've just asked burnt marshmallow creme on both waffles.

Overall : A great place to hang out for supper, and definitely do try the S'mores waffle, it's totally worth the $ and calories.  Service was also pleasant and friendly!

EGG-XPERIENCE this Easter! Smile Mar 18, 2016
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Fusion | Multi-Cuisine | Hotel | Buffet

For this Easter Weekend from 25-27 MArch 2016, Bay Hotel Singpore's Street 50 Restaurant & Bar is eggcited to bring on a buffet lunch menu with some speciality egg dishes curated using the First and Only Pasteurized fresh eggs in Singapore from the N&N Farm and freshly laid qual eggs from Uncle William's quail farm. There will also be a showcase set up by Kranji Countryside Farmers Market to bring together local farmers and artisans to celebrate Easter together with a local twist.

The dining room of Street 50 is large enough to accomodate big parties. So this could be the ideal venue for your Easter, long weekend family gathering. The chic finishing with dark brown and white colour theme brings about a very comfy and cosy environment. The staff were very attentive and was always seen walking up and down the customers in hope that they would be needed.

Here is their ala carte menu as well, if anything you should try their lemon grass drink. It is very refreshing!

1. Combination of Chinese Cold Cuts

A common sight at wedding banquets would be the cold dish, but Street 50 has changed it up a little with adding Deep-fried quail eggs, along with favourites such as jellyfish, marinated octpus, prawn salad and spring rolls. As a quail egg lover, it was a delight to see my favourite tiny eggs deep fried.

The spring rolls were pretty filing despite it's size. One spring roll and I was full, I attribute it to the thickly wrapped spring roll skin. The octopus were generous in size and well marinated, with a sweet aftertaste. The jellyfish was just right for me. It had a slightly chewy, and crunchy bite in every mouthful.

2. 62 Degrees boiled Egg with Chicken Essence

I really liked this creation. It is a soft boiled egg in the center and surrounding it is steamed egg, all of this goodness topped off with chicken essence! And everyone knows about the health benefits of chicken essence from BRAND'S.

STREET50 is proud to partner with N&N to provide pasteurized egg during this Easter buffet experience. Unlike typical eggs pasteurized eggs requires alot of R&D in the millions of dollars and it requires submerging them into boiling water to kill all forms of bacteria. Hence, you see the colour difference of the egg white, in comparison to the normal eggs. It is more evident in a black coloured bowl. But the outside, it is difficult to guess which is a pasteurized egg. You can only tell once you have cracked it open!
Difference between Pasteurized eggs and normal eggs

Difference between Pasteurized eggs and normal eggs

But having said this, with pasteurized eggs, you can be more at ease, with eating a soft boiled egg. There are lower chances of getting any digestive problems as most of the bacteria has been killed off before the egg was even cracked open. I do know of friends who are unwilling to eat soft boiled egg, due to the fact that it is still partially raw.

Pasteurized eggs contain Omega 3,6 and vitamin E. They are also lower in cholestrol and you can look forward to a healthier and more nutritious Easter Buffet!

The BRAND'S essence gives a very strong and appetizing aroma to this simple but delightful starter. This dish will be made available at the Pasteurized Egg Live Station where you can also get omelette cooked in truffle oil, sunny side up or scrambled eggs as well.

3. Potato Salad with Pommery Mayonnaise

A potato salad dish with quail eggs. Not the most exciting dish, but I loved it nonethteless. The mayonnaise was spread consistently throughout the entire salad. The blend of spices in this salad, certainly brought out an aromatic fragrance which was a delight to my palate as I would usually skip heavy carb dishes like this.

The hard boiled quailed eggs tasted fresh and firm with a chewy mouthfeel.  In my humble opinion, I personally felt that the quail eggs subtly complement well with the potato salad.

4. Braise Tofu with Crabmeat and Egg White

A typical chicken dish with a twist. The nutritious sauce made with crab meat and pasteurized egg white was braised for hours to achieve this consistency. In addition, the crab meat were seen in chunks, that tasted fresh. I really loved the thick and flavourful sauce with its savoury crab meat and tofu. The texture of the tofu was done right for me and neither too soft nor too firm.

5. Scotch Egg

I've only had scotch eggs 3 times in my life but this was a slightly different experience from the other two. The eggs seemed drier and could stay attached to the bread crumb layers, which made it difficult for me to eat it. Served with a mustard sauce, it was difficult to dip it into the sauce without losing either the bread crumb layer or the egg in the saucer. The bread crumb layer wasn't crispy and was rather doughy on the inside.

This would be perfect for hard boiled egg lovers. But for me, it was a bit disappointing.

6. Oven-roasted Chicken with Quail Egg and Spicy Tomato Sauce

This was another quail egg delight for me. The oven-roasted chicken came out smelling so good. The chicken meat seemed okay and slightly dry on the edges, but coupled with the spicy tomato sauce which really wasn't spicy, which is great for non-spicy food eaters like myself. The meat was drenched in a satisfaction guaranteed sauce! The flavour was a bit mild for my liking but I had no complaint other than maybe an enhancement of the tomato flavour. The eggs held up nicely in the sauce. I finished up all the quail eggs in the dish by myself!

7. Sambal Prawn with Quail Egg

I've never seen sambal prawns served with egg, but that doesn't mean they don't go well together. This was an aromatic sambal, flavoured with a belnd of spices. The prawns encased within were fresh and juicy. The essence of the sambal could be tasted in the entire dish, even the eggs.

I could easily detect the spiciness of the sambal so this wasn't the dish for me. But it depends on  each individuals' threshold for spiciness. This combination was surprisngly good, in my opinion. It is definitely worth the try.

8. XO Fried Rice with Crabmeat

Served with subtly with pasteurized egg white, this XO Fried Rice with crabmeat was a very comforting chinese dish. One mouth and I was sold. The wok-hei was evident in taste but not in aroma.

The crab meat wasn't really visible in the dish, but you could taste it. This was a good end to the meal and there is a completel gamut of egg-xquisite culinary delights.

On top of the eggciting buffet options. With every 4 paying adult, you get to bring home an Easter Egg Terrarium. Try you hard at the alfresco workshop!

Here is the exact terrarium that you get to work on. It is alot of fun, and kids or adults can enjoy the experience together!

It comes with a packet of loose soil and little coloured rocks that act as a drainage for the terrarium.  We had so much fun building our terrariums and we also had experts guide us on how to place the soil and how to take care of it. It was a fun and educational experience.

Check out this pretty terrarium that one of the bloggers did! You only need to water it 5 teaspoons every 2 weeks!

Overall : With all the activities that STREET50 has planned. This is more than just a Easter lunch buffet. It's filled with quizzes, fun and games, and even build a terrarium. Expect to spend a little longer testing your knowledge on quail and pasteurized eggs. The food itself is also pretty unique for this season!

American Style Wings OK Mar 16, 2016
Categories : American | Fast Food | Halal | Burgers and Sandwiches

Located on the 4th floor of Bugis plus is Wing Zone. Having studied in the US, I do miss wing nights and grabbing a whole bucket of wings for cheap and washed down with a cold root beer. But being in Singapore, these wings don't come cheap and no one seems to sell them in buckets (50 wings)  Wing Zone is touted to have had 20 years of experimental success with their 13 flavours, originating from Florida.

Looking at the menu, it really reminded me of being back at my second home. The usual items like mozarella sticks, burgers, wedges, winglets and drumlets etc. Most of it, seemed pretty affordable and they are all nett priced.

This was their weekday lunch menu from 11am-3pm. I visited on a tuesday afternoon at 12pm and my colleague and I were the only customers the entire time. After you have picked your order, regardless if it's a burger or not, you have to pick a flavour.

- Buffalo Bliss
- Mango Fire

- Nuclear Habanero
- Thai Chili
- Sweet Samurai
- Liquid Gold
- Honey Q
- Garlic Parm
- Cinnamon Maple
- Tokyo Dragon
- Lemon Zinger
- Cool Ranch

1. Mozarella Sticks $6.95

You get 5 mozarella sticks for $6.95. First off, the exterior of the mozarella stick wasn't breaded, but rather just covered in flour. It was piping hot when served with the super chilled and cold salsa. This was completely unexpected but oh well! The mozarella stick did have a long stringy cheese in the center which wasn't impressive in taste or texture. It felt very chewy and hard.

Check out the stretch!

The batter that covered the mozarella stick was too thick and intense for me. I got pretty full from slowly eating one mozarella stick.

2. Chicken Tenders (4 pc)  $7.95

Served with a side of full-flavored version of traditional honey mustard offers blissful relief from the heat aka Liquid Gold. The chicken tenders were dry and hard. The were hot but I can pressume the meat was just as frozen as the mozarella sticks were frozen a long time ago. Not a single chicken tender tasted tender. It was another disappointment. The sauce however was it's saving grace.

3. 1/4 Pound Burger $8.95

The burger though small in size, was the best tasting item we had ordered. The meat was seasoned with Honey Q  that had Sweet honey and smoky BBQ to deliver great Southern flavour. The meat itself wasn't as dry as the chicken tenders or mozarella sticks. The bread felt a bit hard and stale though. The tomatoes and veggies used in the burger tasted fresh. The wedges were slightly too salty for my taste but they were fresh and crisp on every bite.

4. 6 Pc Wings $7.95

I got a side of 6 pc wings with Tokyo Dragon which had hot honey meets classic teriyaki for an experience of ginger, soy and heat. The wings were dry but the skin of the chicken was slightly crispy. The sauce gave a sharp sweet and sour sensation. The sauce was evenly distributed amongst the 6 pieces of chicken.

Overall : The food came quickly, maybe because we were the only customers during a weekday lunch time, but the food didn't satisfy any of my cravings for wings. The staff were polite and very friendly. They were also very patient and helpful when it came to picking a sauce for the wings.
