Roosevelt's Diner & Bar is conveniently located right at Outram MRT. There's also an open-air car park that is coupon-based just opposite the cafe, so there's ample parking options should you choose to drive down. This place seems to be catered more towards the expats, for a chill out bar experience but they also have a weekend brunch menu that can suit the needs of any family.

1. Pan Seared Hokkaido Scallops ($24)
For appetizers, we were recommended to try their scallops, at $8 a pop, I did expect it to be at least decent. The pan seared scallops were served on yuzu mustard ricotta with seaweed brown butter and toasted hazelnuts. The menu mentioned it was topped with tobiko, but we saw no trace of it. The scallops tasted alright, but nothing to wow about, except the price.

2. Squid Ink Fish and Chips ($26)
An interesting version of the fish and chips that I've not tried before. The exterior of the fish was crisp and had a nice bite, with the addition of the squid ink, it was able to absorb some moisture, leaving the desirable crusty appearance and texture. It was certainly a great surprise for me as I really enjoyed the fish. The chips were slightly limp and soggy, but still acceptable.

3. Chicken Confit With Truffle Potato Foam ($26)
The chicken skin was thin and crispy. Missing was the layer of fat in between the skin and the melt that had melted away during the cooking process. The chicken melt was tender, juicy and flavourful. Paried with the truffle potato foam, this main dish was the winner for the night. The truffle potato foam had a distinct truffle aroma that wasn't too overpowering, along with the smooth truffle lingering taste that made this dish so addictive. I found myself, digging in, spoon after spoonful of truffle mash!

4. BBQ Baby Back Ribs ($26)
This was served with a bourbon BBQ sauce and was their signature dish. The portion and price was reasonable and I watched a family of 4 next to us, enjoy this as a family sharing dish.

5. Secret Compressed Watermelon waffle

Instead of picking a dessert off the menu, owner, Ying recommended us to try one of her newest invention. I was honoured to be her guinea pig.

A unique waffle with Strawberry, compressed Watermelon with mint and choya, Balsamic Vinegar Honey and Rose bud ricotta.

The compressed watermelon with mint and choya was so juicy and sweet, bursting with flavours. The balsamic honey and rose bud ricotta were all interesting ingredients which sounded like an overdose of ingredient combination. But nope, it all worked out, together. The waffle itself was crispy with a butter fragrance.

Overall, decent food with a nice, cosy and chill-out ambience. Great for the boys night out, or family gatherings during the day.

Great Turkish food Smile Jun 24, 2016

Categories : Middle Eastern/Mediterranean | Restaurant

Located in sand crawler, about 5 minutes walk from one-north mrt is Arkadas Cafe. The entrance to the cafe is accessed via the side road. It's pretty hidden and you can even see a water fall outisde of the cafe from the dining area.

The staff are very friendly and during a weekday office hour lunch, they aren't too crowded, which is great for office meetings with business clients. The ambience is comfortable and the menu is pretty extensive.

1. Lamb Pide

This was recommdned to my party of 3. The lamb was deliciously juicy and the cheese was addictive. The pide itself was crispy like a thin crust pizza with a slight crunch on the ends.

2. Lunch set soup

The soup was flavourful but not too salty. Definitely not from a can. The soup had a subtle fragrance of a vegetable soup.

3. Turkish coffee and baklava

Turkish coffee is literally the strongest coffee I know of. There's so much coffee with so little water and served with baklava which is a very very sweet turkish dessert. Bitter plus overly sweet dessert equals a great end to any meal.

4.  Humus

Their humus was smooth and delightful. I really liked it and reminded me of my time in Israel. Just wished felt that it was abit overpriced for such a small serving.

5. Kebab wrap

6. Moussaka *highly recommended*

The cheese here is so addictively good. I've had this twice over a period of 3 months. The top of the cheese is cooked and burnt to perfection and has a nice crisp to it.

The insides of the cheese layer is smooth and gooey just the way I like it. There's tons of minced meat and vegetables underneath the layers of cheese.

The rice is extremely fragrant and flavourful. Do choose the rice as you have an option between rice and bread for this moussaka.

Overall: a great dining experience with a quiet and comfortable air conditioned environment, tucked away in a corner of one-north.

Cafe in Bartley Cry Jun 08, 2016

Categories : Western Variety | Café | Pasta | Burgers and Sandwiches | Brunch

Located along Upper paya lebar road with an eye catching shop sign "Saturday House" is this cafe that sells itself as a bar and cafe. It sells mostly western food in the form of hipster cafe food but also alcoholic drinks.

Their signature menu items include sirloin steak at $22.90+ or top up 4@ for $24.90++ you get the mix grill combo of grilled chicken, sirloin steak and bacon. Other signature menu itmes are leg of lamb, grilled pork collar and chicken leg in chef's bbq sauce.

Their starters range from marmite mid-joint wings $8+ to bacon cheese mushrooms, cream cheese fries and oven baked cheese nachos.

You will notice that their shop entrance has no door, and the air con basically just goes out the main door. So it's ridiculous at how hot it can be inside the cafe. At most cafes, you would expect air conditioning, and the air conditioning here is useless. My suggestion, get one of the tables closest to the wall, where the air con unit is mounted.

1. Fried Pork Collar $8+

The fried pork collar looked amazing even though it carried no aroma of fried meat. It tasted okay, more like a typical pork katsu you would find at a japanese stall just with less meat and very thin.

It was an okay started but we quickly grew tired of it.

2. Mixed Grill Combo $24.90+

The mixed grill combo looked amazin until I sliced into the steak, which you can definitely tell was very frozen, probably a long time ago. It tasted like cardboard. I know for this price, we cannot expect much but, it was probably one of the worst steak I've tried.

The chicken was way better than the steak. The bacon was probably the only thing I even consider having a second bite of. The coleslaw and wedges were sides that we got to pick and they were okay. My suggestion, skip this.

3. Marmite Mid Joint Wings $8+

These were surprisingly good. The wings were crispy and the marmite sauce was evenly distributed on the exterior of the wings. I really liked this and would most probably get this again if I ever returned.

Overall : this place tries too hard to be a cafe or a bar. There is free parking infront of it, which is nice. There's not much to rave about the food, and the ambience is miserable, if only they could close the front door. Service was rather quick and the staff was polite.

Bingsu and egglet waffles OK May 30, 2016
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Korean | Café | Desserts and Cakes

Located at the V junction of Sin Ming road is Thomson V2, it is both residential and commercial. There's a few cafes, waffle places and this one and only bingsu shop. The inside of the cafe, seats about 7 pax. Water and napkins are placed outside, to avoid the cramped interior. They have an LCD screen playing new kpop music videos

1. Egglet waffle with honeycomb and caramel sauce $7.90

I asked the staff what were the flavours for the waffle and she couldn't really tell me, because it wasn't on the menu. I had to take out my phone and refer to the groupon page to see what combinations I could get.

Toppings (choose 1):
Mango
Blackberry
Cheesecake
Honey comb
Cookie
Sauce (choose 1):
White chocolate
Chocolate
Caramel
Mango
Cinnamon
and I really wasn't expecting the waffle to be served on a plate, but more like wrapped up and hand held, like the picture on groupon.

link : http://www.groupon.sg/deals/singapore/nunkkot-korean-desert-cafe-7/721444592

Nevertheless, the corners of the egglet waffle was crispy. The waffle in the center turned soggy due to the honey which is fine. The honey comb tasted more like cardboard. This was a no go for me. I wouldn't pay $7.90 for this, but at $4 with a groupon, that's okay.

2. Choco brownie Bingsu $18.90

My guy friends are chocolate lovers and they wanted this chocolate brownie one. We have tried bingsu from other places before and this just wasn't good enough. The ice cream was okay. The shaved milk/ice was alright. I was okay with it. It was mainly flavourless, and hence I would just recommend going with the mango bingsu. Which according to the staff was a more popular item.

The brownies were rock hard and the lady boss mentioned that the cheesecakes were made in house by their "sifu", so I guess he's chinese? But the brownie? She didn't mention anything about it, so probably from a vendor outside. The almonds were okay and the bananas were sweet, other than that. skip this.
3. Mango cheesecake $18.90

I'm so glad we went with the staff recommendation. There were lots of cubed mango and maybe 5 cubed cheesecakes, which they should've been more generous with. The mangoes were sweet with a mango syrup all around them.

As the bingsu melted, the mango juice/syrup pretty much made this entire bowl, a giant mango ice juice. It was refreshing and nice. I liked it!

The bingsu was soft and pillowy. But at $18.90 a bowl, it's pretty pricey, but this shop does have groupon deals and entertainer 1 for 1 app, so do check out those offers. They will make the visit more worthwhile.

4. Egglet waffle with oreo and white chocolate sauce $7.90

This was a deliciously crispy egg waffle that I enjoed. The white chocolate syrup with oreo crumbs was a great choice. I highly recommend this combination.

Overall : the lady boss said that they are moving to Novena and I hope for their sake that they improve their bingsu quality of ingredients and their dining concept as a Korean dessert stall.

Located in the basement of Ocean Financial Centre is Knickers+Bockers. Interestingly, it's been open for about 5 months now, but only recently, has it gained online social media appearance. It's conveniently located in the underpass on the way to the MRT station.

Knicker+Bockers literally refers to the casual New Yorker style of wearing baggy pants and being easy going. Here at this pizza joint, they literally give you the option to add any toppings at just a flat price. Being in Singapore, we all know certain ingredients usually command a higher price like seafood and certain meats. But not here.

You can make your own pizza $12.90 or even pasta $8.90. It was fun deciding what my favourite ingredients were and I was spoilt for choice. For the base, my favourite was the pesto garlic. For cheeses, I liked the mozarella or cheddar slightly more than the rest. If you wanted a 5 cheese pizza, TICK ALL THE BOXES!

i had a take home pizza of pesto, mozarella, salmon, mushrooms, beef salami, and bacon. I reheated it in the morning in the toaster at maximum temperature for 5 minutes as per Phillip, the owner's recommendation but maybe my toaster wasn't powerful enough. The base of the pizza remained soggy despite the rest of the ingredients being well cooked.

It's a slight shame that even though I tried 2 different pizzas with bacon at the shop. Not one bit of bacon was crispy. The salami however was crisp as a Lay's potato crisp! That was delicious!

It was nice to watch the staff pick out the ingredients as per my order and generously place them on the pizza dough and then watch my pizza roll through the oven. Almost reminds me of Quizzos, when they have the subs roll though the oven and come out all toasted and ready to be devoured!

Knicker+Bockers definitely redefines the pizza dining experience in Singapore. I don't think I've seen other eatery offer unlimited toppings on a pizza at just $12.90!

For people who can't decide what they want to add to their pizza, there are some signature pizzas that have been designed to help lazy people decide what to eat. Pick one of those and run along. However, I felt that that kills the fun of dining at Knicker+Bockers.

CHECK OUT THE SALMON here!

The thin crust pizza is a signature of NY.
The staff are very friendly and can help you come to a decision on what ingredients you would like to have on the pizza. They are also very patient.

The cafe has a very typical "bar" set up and it is warmly lit with a high ceiling and lights dangling down. It can accomodate a group of maybe 20 pax at total. They also serve soda, fruit juices and even ice cream soda and root beer in glassed bottles.

Overall : A fun and delicious dining experience and I am so ready to experiment with more ingredients at Knicker+Bockers
