Nyonya Kueh ( Tiong Bahru )

I was quite surprised that such a stall exists. I thought I can only get tutus from the night markets or pasa malams so I quickly bought 5 of them, two peanut and three coconut. I ate three of them on the spot and left the other two until I reached home. Of course, eating it on the spot is always good because the tutu is still soft. Once you reached home, the tutu would have hardened considerably, and that made it not as nice. Anyway, the filling is quite a lot and I especially loved the peanut tutu since it is very fragrant with the ground peanuts which are sweet and crumbly.

coffee ice cream
Smile 2013-03-12

Ben & Jerry's ( Dhoby Ghaut )

Ben and Jerry's ice creams are rather expensive in my opinion, but once a while I will still patronise it especially if someone is giving a treat. I just tried the chocolate flavour not too long ago, so I choose the coffee flavour this time. Though there are many other flavours that are calling out to me, since I have not really had a good coffee ice cream before, I was hoping Ben & Jerry's version will make me satisfied. The ice cream is creamy, thick and rich in the coffee aroma. There isn't any hint of coffee bitterness at all (which I was hoping there will be) but it is still one of the better coffee ice creams that I had. I would think non coffee lovers can give this a try too.

pau

Tiong Bahru Pau ( Tiong Bahru )
Since I am already at Tiong Bahru food centre, I decided to buy some dim sums back home for breakfast the next day. I got the char siew pau and the tau sa pau, five of each and 10 in total. Between the two paus, I like the char siew pau better. The char siew is seasoned very adequately and the pau is full of juices and moisture from the seasoning. The char siew is not too fatty as well with lean meat making up the majority of the pau filling. The best thing is that the pau skin is also not too hard and it is very s

oft once you reheat it in the steamer.

sponge chiffon cake
Smile 2013-03-12

Best Deli ( Tampines )
I was nearby this bakery and decided to get some cakes back home instead of breads since we usually take breads for breakfast and I wanted something different. I originally intended to get those swiss roll, but changed my mind when I saw this chiffon cake. It looks really lovely (not overly browned) so I took this instead. Indeed, the taste is really light and the chiffon cake is not too sweet. It is really spongy as well, so it is easy to have other piece after finishing the first piece. It is definitely recommended!

hokkien mee
Smile 2013-03-12

Hong Heng Fried Sotong Prawn Mee ( Tiong Bahru )

After trying food from other stalls in Tiong Bahru market, I went back to my favourite stall, which is this stall. I simply love their hokkien mee. The hokkien mee has just the right amount of moisture in them and the broth used is very good because it shows in the flavour of the noodles. The noodles is really flavourful with a good mixture of yellow noodles and beehoon. The ingredients are also very fresh, I like the sotong a lot. The only thing is the portion, I felt that it seemed to have shrunk a little since my last visit.

beancurd
Smile 2013-03-12

Lao Ban Soya Beancurd ( Raffles Place )

Seeing that the queue for Lao Ban is not too long, I decided to queue for it. It took me less than 10minutes and I left with 10 bowls of Lao Ban to bring back home. It is gone very fast and before I know it, there is only 2 bowls left when I opened my fridge later in the night. I personally love it when it is just out from the fridge since it is very cold and the beancurd is very smooth and cooling in my mouth. The beancurd is really as good as all the reviews have claimed with its malty flavour and melt in your mouth feeling. If you haven’t already tried it, you are really missing out on this!

Classic fish and chips
Smile 2013-03-10

Fish & Co. ( Ang Mo Kio )
I have not stepped into Fish & Co for the past year and didn't realise that they have new items on the menu now and even under fish and chips, there are so many different kinds, New York Fish and chips, Artic Fish and chips, even Singapore fish and chips etc. I guess I really havent been here for too long, which is why I don't remember seeing these in the past.

Still, I went for their good old "The Best Fish & Chips in Town" which consist of deep fried fish, fries with their lemon butter sauce. The batter is really crispy, I can hear the crunch as I bite into the fish. Also, I love the soft and flaky fish fillet which is very fresh tasting and sweet. The lemon butter sauce is also quite alright, it helps to add more dimension of flavours to the fish.

rojak
Smile 2013-03-10

Rojak - S11Food House ( Yishun )

I ordered the Rojak for takeaway at $3. The person making the rojak is quite skilled, finishing my order very quickly. Although it is a takeaway, luckily the rojak did not turn too soggy by the time I got home which is great. The prawn paste is quite nice, not too salty or sweet. I love the serving of peanuts on top of the ingredients as it added some crunch and nutty taste to the rojak. The rest of the ingredients are fresh as well, the pineapples tasted very sweet too. Overall, I liked it and will buy again if I happen to be at the coffee shop.

one of the best fishball noodles
Smile 2013-03-10

Teochew Fishball Noodle Drp/Soup ( Tiong Bahru )
I haven't tried from this stall before, but looking at the queue, I decided to just join in since I had some time to spare for lunch. After a 15 minutes wait, I got my bowl of fishball noodles. The fishballs are quite oddly shaped which means to say it is probably handmade instead of machine made. It is very tasty as well, it has more bounce and bite to them than the other fishballs that I had outside. The noodles are also very tasty with the mix of the sauce, vinegar an

d chilli. It has been a long time since I truly enjoyed a bowl of fishball noodles this good.

pastries
Smile 2013-03-10

8Tarts n Pastries ( Woodlands )

This is my second visit to this stall. The first visit left a good impression, so my hubby and I decided to buy some pastries back after our shopping at Causeway Point. Having tried the soya tart the other time, we decided to try the normal egg tarts as well as other pastries which are the salted green bean pastry and the lao po bing.

The egg tart is more flavourful than the soya tart, so for those with sweeter tooth, do order the egg tart. The lao po bing is quite delicious with its sweet melon filling and the thickness of the exterior pastry is also just right. I did not try the salted green bean pastry, but my hubby polished it off in record time, which goes to show it is quite good as well. Looking forward to my third visit!

yong tau fu
Smile 2013-03-10

Koo Kee Yong Tow Foo - The Food Mall ( Yishun )
I am not sure what the soup is as it is ordered by one of my friends. Nevertheless, the yong tau fu when accompanied with the spicy soup is really delicious. The spicy soup helps to enhance the yong tau fu flavours, especially those yong tau fu which had not been fried like the dried beancurd. The items are mostly fried items which gives the yong tau fu a more saltish taste. The items are usually standardised, but I think you can request to change certain things if you like certain things better.

delicious soft breads
Smile 2013-03-10

Gin Thye ( Ang Mo Kio )

For my breakfast, I usually like to get flavoured breads once in a while as these breads are very convenient and are tasty by itself. I usually get breads like these which comes in 4, where everyone can get a piece of it. This is the coconut bread which costs $1.40. The breads are extremely fluffy and soft and the coconut filling inside the bread is sweet and fragrant. It is so tasty, I ate two at one go unknowingly. There are many other flavours like kaya, red bean, coffee cheese, sweet potato etc if you do not like coconut.

delicious
Smile 2013-03-07

Hup Lee Beehoon ( Bedok )

I bought a packet of the beehoon with the yellow noodle as takeaway since the hawker centre is quite hot and I didn’t want to eat my meal there. The beehoon is a fresh batch so it taste exceptionally nice and warm. The fish fillet which I added on to my beehoon is also delicious with a crispy exterior. The exterior batter is not too much which allows me to have more of the fish fillet. I must also mention their chilli. It is really quite spicy and hence absolutely delicious with the noodles.

otah puff
Smile 2013-03-07

Polar Puffs & Cakes ( Dhoby Ghaut )

This is my first time trying out polar’s otah puff. I had originally intended to get the curry puff but it is sold out. I am glad though, because I find the otah puff just as nice as the curry puff. The pastry is very buttery and fragrant. It is slightly warm which made it even tastier. Such puffs are always great when warm, and cold puffs are just off putting. The otah meat is slightly spicy and flavourful too. It is truly a delight. I will recommend people who love spicy stuff to try this!

herbal jelly
Smile 2013-03-07

Chi Ni Dou Fu ( Chinatown )

After all the Chinese new year snacking, we decided to have a cooling and healthy dessert. That is why we ordered the herbal jelly instead of the soya beancurd pudding since the herbal jelly is believed to be helpful in cooling the body after eating heaty stuff.

As I have tasted the real herbal jelly, I felt that this is really not authentic at all – it tastes more like the grass jelly instead of the herbal jelly. The taste is more towards being sweet and there is very minimal, if not no herbal taste at all. That said, this is still a healthier alternative to other cold desserts. I think little kids will be able to eat it without complaining about the taste.
