Old Chang Eeeeeeeeee Cry Apr 30, 2012

I had the Chicken wrap ( I suppose you can think of them as mini ngoh hiangs) for $1.40 per stick.

I had bought it as an accompaniment to my cup noodle.

All I can say - IT WAS BAD.

Like, really really bad. Very rarely, have I come across food so bad that I can't stomach it. However, this was the case with this chicken wrap. I think the name Flour Wrap would have been more appropriate. It tasted completely of flour. They didn't even try to make it taste like chicken.

The texture was horrid. It was slimy, yicky paste that should not exist. If they had made it crispier, it wouldn't have been so bad.

This was a complete disappointment, and a waste of my $1.40.

My last time buying a chicken wrap from old chang kee.

More like Sub-par Cry Sep 04, 2011

Categories : American | Fast Food | Burgers and Sandwiches

I happened to be having sandwich cravings that day and so decided to take a trip down to subway.

I ordered a 6-inch Tuna Sandwich. Just the sandwich and it cost me around $5.50.

The tuna sandwich did not satisfy my cravings at all. I'm used to the American style of 3 full scoops of tuna on the bread, but over at this local Subway, they only stuff in one scoop of tuna and spread it around like you would do with jam. Result? Complete failure. I could barely taste my tuna and felt like I was eating plain bread with vegetables in it. Also, they ran out of bread and only had 2 choices left. I think this is something management should work on. The bread was also hard and dry. sad

To make things worse, the service was bad. The staff did not seem happy to be there at all.

Lastly, to touch on price, I don't think it's worth paying $5.50 for a sandwich as pathetic as the one I had. Or really, for any plain old classic sandwich for that matter. I think you might as well go to the grocery store, buy the ingredients, and make your own sandwich. Sure, it might be more work, but the value is there. Personally, I think it's ridiculous to be paying so much for a simple sandwich, when you can get Chicken Rice for much less. And Chicken Rice involves so much more work to produce. However, I think this is a problem that is rampant nationwide, not just for subway. Salad and sandwiches are made to seem like high-class food and come with equally high-class prices.

Also, they had some broken furniture which was quite a safety-hazard, but yet nothing was done to fix it.

So if you still really enjoy Subway and don't mind the hefty price, I highly recommend going to the other outlets. You can skip this one and will not be missing out on much.

A complete disappointment Cry Aug 31, 2011

I happened to be at Nex for a University event. Since it was around 10-11 PM, the only eatery that was open was Café Cartel. That trip was my first, and came to be my last.

Since we were there for supper, I ordered a simple bowl of mushroom soup that, according to the menu, was supposed to come with a free flow of bread.

When my bowl of soup arrived, I took one look and was immediately disappointed. The color of the soup was a murkish brown and it looked extremely diluted. It was neither a cream based soup nor was it regular soup. It was a horrible in-between. Furthermore, I did not see a single slice of mushroom. I'd rather open a can of Campbell's any day.

And my free flow of bread? Hah. It was absent when the waiter brought my soup. So I decided to ask for it. The waiter mumbled something that sounded like "Let me check". Waited for over 30 mins until a persistent companion of mine asked for the bread again. The waiter's reply was that since it was past a certain time, they did not provide bread. Yet no where was this stated on the menu. My friend reprimanded him for not telling us earlier and his response was a "I don't know" face and that he walked off. After another 10 mins, they finally brought out the bread, but by that time we had long finished our soup.

Also, at the beginning, no waiter came to take our order, so we approached him ourselves and was directed to the counter. My friend and I stood at the counter for a few minutes right in front of the cashier and she simply ignored us. We were told that we actually had to sit down and wait to order our food, which made us wonder why we were directed to the counter in the first place. Also, the waiters and waitresses could barely speak english, which did not make communication any better.

Overall, I felt that the soup was pathetic and the service horrible. A complete waste of my money. I am most definitely never going back there again.

SoyaFunk OK Apr 30, 2012

Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Desserts and Cakes

After months of curious desire, I finally got the guts to try Jollibean's Lavender Soya milk.

Yes. Lavender Soya milk. They have a flower series that includes rose and jasmine as well.

Where do I begin with this one? I can't remember the exact price. I believe it was roughly around $2.50 maybe.

It definitely had a flowery/perfumy taste to it, but not in a bad way. Trust me, I've actually tasted perfume. It was somewhat of a light taste with a hint of ginger? It had a bit of spice to it, which sounds weird, but was very much appreciated. If it had been a completely lavender taste, I fear the soya milk would have been very artificial. The hint of spice gave it a bit more of a natural taste.

The texture was somewhat powdery. I'm not sure if it was due to the lavender flavoring, or that jollibean's soya milk is usually that way.

Was it bad? No, not at all. It was a little funky. Would I drink it again? That is still a mystery to me. I doubt I would wake up one morning and have cravings for it, but then again, only time will tell.

...Phoget it? OK Oct 26, 2011

My friend and I had taken a shopping trip to Chinatown.
Being in Chinatown, we expected to have cheap and good eats. However, we just couldn't seem to find the Hawker Centre, and ended up spending A LOT on our lunch.

One of the few places that were open at the time we went was Yummy Viet. The sign board said they offered lunch sets for around $8. We were already a little reluctant to enter after seeing the price, but we went in anyway. After taking a look at the menu, we realized that MANY of the menu items were $8.90 ++++.

I believe the only thing that was at $8.90 was the Chicken Noodles. Despite it being the cheapest, I just couldn't stand being in a Vietnamese Restaurant and only eating Chicken Noodles. I had to try the Pho instead. The whole set lunch cost me around $11.00+.

With the Lunch Set, you get a choice of drink, appetizer and the main course.

I had a sore throat that day, so I was hoping that the Plum Juice would alleviate the pain. However, their plum juice was not concentrated enough. It was a little diluted, making the taste somewhat bland - neither sour nor sweet.

I ordered some Spring Rolls for my appetizer. These weren't too bad. The first few bites they were good, but subsequently they made me feel a little "heavy". It was extremely oily, first of all. My ideal spring roll is one that is lightly fried, that includes a good balance between the vegetables and meat to make it light and "spring(the season)"-like. However, the meat in these spring rolls were rather overwhelming. On the plus side, it meant that they are generous with the meat. Yet, too much can make you sick. Fortunately it came with a sweet and sour sauce that helped balance the heaviness of the spring roll.

Ah...Pho. The pride of Vietnamese Cuisine. The Menu even spared the dish a page to explain the brilliance of the bowl of noodles in beef stock. It mentioned that the stock is boiled for hours to make sure the flavor stays within the soup. It got me so excited, but the moment I got it and tried it, I was a little disappointed. I really wondered if the soup had been boiled for hours. I feel like any local Prawn Mee had more flavor in its stock that the one at Yummy Viet. The thin beef slices were also a little on the tough side.

The impression I got after the meal was that I didn't get my money's worth. Part of the reason might be because I had intended to eat yummy, cheap hawker food. Of course, this might have clouded my judgment. Nonetheless, next time I go to China town, i will probably phoget Yummy Viet, and go find some cheapo la mian.
