King of Appam Smile May 09, 2013

Categories : Indian

Every time I have a craving for appam, I head on to Madras New Woodlands. For me, this place serves the best appam in Tekka. It is cooked evenly, with soft, light and spongy middle portion and and crispy sides. Though it is good enough to be eaten on its own, I prefer to dip each mouthful of appam in coconut milk and sugar, that is served with the appam. By the way, each set comes with 2 appam.

Methu Vadai

Another must have. these are not pre-fried, but are made only after an order is placed. Thus, you get hot and crispy Vadai each time you place your order. The coconut and tomato chutney that complements the vadai..... oooh! you have to try it yourself.

The best time to savour appam is before 11am.

Good Deal Smile May 01, 2013

For sumptuous food, service and ambience, Aquamarine is the place.
Thanks to my daughter who had purchased a High Tea at Aquamarine deal from Groupon. Aquamarine offers assorted salads, an array of sushi, satisfying main course such as Chicken Rice, beef and fish, soups and rojak etc. They have a superb range of desserts, beautifully presented.
The place can be very cold. So, be prepared. This place is definitely worth going to.

Vegans' Delight OK May 01, 2013

I was there for lunch with my husband and daughter. Gokul provided a much needed cool ambiance from the sweltering heat. Though none of us were vegetarian food lovers, we wanted to give this place a try.

It was around half-past one. Surprisingly the lunch time crowd was missing. Good for us - waiting time was shortened. The restaurant is spacious and clean. The waiters are friendly. They served us a basket of pappads, which my husband finished in no time. Nevertheless, the basket was replenished quickly. (The pappads were not so crispy though)
I was balled over when I opened the menu. The range they offer is huge. They had South and North Indian, Chinese, Western, Malay and Thai food. All vegetarian, of course.

We ordered plain Basmati Rice, Hot and Sour Soup, Hotplate Tofu, Malai Kofta Mughlai Style, Sambal Goreng, Masala Kulcha and Lime Juice. The Basmati rice was so light and fluffy. The texture was perfect. Obviously a high quality Basmati rice has been used. Then there was the Hot and Sour Soup. Just what we needed to tantalise our palates. Be warned! This soup is SPICY! If you have a faint tongue, avoid this dish.
Hotplate Tofu is another must try. Though it was missing the seafood, it tasted just as good without them. Masala Kulcha is similar to Naan, except that it is potato stuffed. The added herbs and well-grilled roti gave a crunchy taste. We had ordered only one (cut into four pieces). These alone can be quite filling. Sambal Goreng - without the belachan/shrimp paste - was spicy and tasty. The Lime Juice was sweet and sour and refreshing. They did not add too much ice cubes in it thus it was not diluted.
What's a trip to Tekka without savouring the appam? And then came the appam. I was very disappointed with the appearance of it. The edges were not crispy. The center portion was slightly bigger than a fifty-cent coin. I could taste bicarbonate soda which left a stinging aftertaste. Appam at Gokul is a no-no.
Overall, the food here is good. A fabulous choice for vegetarians. However, I felt that the dishes are overpriced.

Nasi Goreng Kampung Smile Dec 24, 2011

Talk about Ameen Makan House, the first dish that comes to my mind is their nasi goreng kampung. This has become my 'staple dish' I should say. It has all the essential tastes that a fried rice dish should have. Try the dish with the spicy sambal belachan served with it. Oh! Simply delicious!
With many NUS students dining here, this place can be a little bit cramped in the evenings.
Ameen's also do home delivery. But be prepared to wait for an hour or more for your delivery.

I joined my nieces for dinner at Casuarina. Tried their north Indian styled chicken gravy. It was very bland. Chicken pieces were not tasty either.
My daughter ordered fried rice with anchovies. Tell you what... the same dish at hawkers centre, tastes way better. This, was oily and bland.
I ordered masala thosai. Ultimate disappointment! Seriously! Why Firstly, the thosai was cold and dry. Secondly, the potato filling, dry and flavourless. Nothing much to comment about the sambar and coconut chutney.
My niece ate the chocolate prata which was crispy and chocolaty (more chocolate was added upon her request) Other than that, nothing wow about it.
My verdict: Will never patronise this place again.
