Tender Bah Kwa Smile Nov 30, 2010

Categories : BBQ

I usually buy Lim Chee Guan's Bah Kwa during Chinese New Year to let my parents have a try, because of the usual long queue, sometimes I forgo this store and move on to its competitors. Lim Chee Guan's Bah Kwa's price can be a little steep compared to its peers, but still many people prefer Lim Chee Guan to the rest.

I can understand why. Lim Chee Guan's Bahkwa is more 'dry' compared to its peers, hence it does not taste that oily. The meat that they use is also very tender, which is great for the older generation where they cannot chew on hard food. Hence, Lim Chee Guan's Bahkwa is quite appropriate for them.

However, because of the queue that often forms at Chinatown outlets, I usually do not patronise them if I need a dosage of Bah Kwa. They seldom have sales, but one good thing is that for every packet of bahkwa that you buy, it comes in an airtight packet, which is great for my friends to bring back overseas by flight.

Not so casual Japanese Dining  Smile Nov 30, 2010

Categories : Japanese | Sushi/Sashimi

A very popular choice among Singaporeans and foreigners is this restaurant lying at Wheelock Place, and queues starts as early as 6.30pm because many of the tables have been reserved already.

Great environment I must say.. the lights are dimmed, so it seems like the perfect place for a romantic dinner or a chill out session. Seats are comfortable and tables and chairs are spaced out nicely so our conversations will not be heard by other people. One good thing about this restaurant is that it offers private rooms, so you can dine with your friends in these private rooms without any disturbance from other people. However, remember to book your tables early in advance.

We arrived at the restaurant at around 6:15, and the waiter took our orders at 6:20. He mentioned to us that they will only start cooking at 6:30, so our food will arrive after 6:45pm. I did not quite understand the rationale of this, but I did not probe about this since 6:30pm might be their official opening hours. After taking our orders, the dishes came by quite quickly and we were pleased. However, my friend's order never came! They delivered my friend's order to some other table, and after 45minutes, we decided to cancel my friend's dinner and head on to some where else for his dinner. I think that this is not acceptable, even if there are many people coming into the restaurant. After all, we did want to enjoy this dinner at the restaurant, hence I was not very pleased. In any case, I thought the manager should have stepped in to apologise for this mistake, but it did not happen.

I really think that the reviews for Sun with Moon in other places are overrated, and the queues are also quite exaggerated given the quality of the food.

Our first order was the Grilled Mackerel which cost about $17. The portion was quite big, comparable to 1.5 hand palms. There was a lemon to be squeezed on top, and the taste of it was that it was not fishy at all. Even though I am not a fish-lover, it tasted quite delicious and tender. The bones of the fish was also easily removed with the chopsticks, so there would be no worry about getting choked on fish bones.

The next order was a main meal, which was the hamburger steak with mushroom sauce. It was quite delicious, but it tasted like another Japanese restaurant in Singapore that was selling half of its price. It cost around $12.90. The hamburger steak was soft and tender, and the mushroom sauce complimented it very well. The portions are quite small, so no worries about being too full by it.

Next was the Avocado Soft Shell Crab Sushi. This sushi dish cost around $16, and it was delicious! The avocado on top was fresh, and the soft shell crab complimented the rice and avocado very well. It was crunchy yet wrapped around with soft Japanese rice. A must-try I must say! There was not need for any Japanese condiments as well since the sushi was really fresh and delicious.

Our last dish was my friend's set meal, which cost around $24. It was a hamburger steak plus beef pieces set meal, and it came with rice, salad and miso soup. I think that it is quite worth it especially if you are a big eater. The salad was delicious, not your usual salad, but with fresh lettuce, and most importantly, fresh-cut chili bits, lemon and mushrooms. It tasted really refreshing. The beef was also tender, and cooked to the way my friend wanted - medium.

Overall, I must say that although there is a long queue, and service might not have been expected to be like that, I am willing to give this restaurant another try again, as there are still many dishes that I have yet to try.

If you go there during week days (Mon-Thurs), you will even get a 10% discount with your DBS cards, so I think it's worth it.

Mushroom Mushroom~ Smile Nov 30, 2010

Categories : Fusion | Steamboat/Hot Pot

Mushroom Pot offers a rather decent variety of food selection for their alacarte buffet.
Their selection of raw food on the pot are faultlessly fresh with a very impressive selection of homemade meat.

Opted for wild mushroom herbal soup base with mala (spicy). The wild herbal mushroom feature a mixture of different mushroom together with many herbs that are unknown to me.
Personally, I couldn't distinguish much different between each different kind of mushroom except for it texture.
Nice prawns and delicate fish and also the more common yong tau foo and meatball.
The experience was rather pleasant.

The service there is also good and efficient, although they do sometimes tend to forget a couple of orders might have missed out in the process. I guess that's a norm in most ala carte steamboat restaurant.

Dim Sum Delight Smile Nov 30, 2010
Categories : Singaporean | Restaurant | Seafood | Kids-Friendly

They offer an unbelievable 50% off during weekday or 40% off during weekend for their dim sum menu.
Sound so unbelievable isnt it?
Not a uncommon scene to see here packed with people during weekend for their dim sum.
I must say this is one of the more value for money restaurant around.

Since it was at 50% off, the dim sum spree begins:

1) Siew Mai - Pretty good. Prawns was crunchy and chewy. But perhaps not the best around
2) Har Gao - Similar to siew mai, their prawns were quite fresh.
3) Pan fried carrot cake - A little tad oily but still passable. Crispy on the outside, moist inside.
4) Char Siew Bao - Skin was soft and fluffy enough. Charsiew paste was quite ok.
5) Xiao long bao - Too thick for my liking.
6) Chee cheong fun - Not too bad, suitable for myt taste.

Overall I think it offer a rather decent range of dim sum at a very generous discounted price. Not a very big eater on dim sum, so i guess ala carte with the 50% are more suitable for me than buffet!

Customizable Burger. Smile Nov 30, 2010

Categories : American | Restaurant | Steaks and Grills | Burgers and Sandwiches

Billy bomber to me is more like a more uptrend version of Botak jones since both of them serve similar kind of American food.

I have a soft spot for their bugers, I dont know why.
You can order their basic burger and customize and add on items to it for some addition cost.
Personally, I would love to have eggs and melted cheese on it!
The two sunny side up eggs are lovely with the burgers.
Beef was reasonably good and it's still rather juicy when it's being served.

Service wise, it was pretty much pleasant. Everything was delivered with a smile.
