Categories : Hainanese | Hawker Centre | Noodles

This is my ‘go-to’ place for traditional Hainanese Beef Noodles.
They were previous from the Cuppage Hawker Centre, and shifted here many many years ago. I rediscovered them years ago and after eating at this stall, I have returned many time over.
You have a choice of noodles (Chor Bee Hoon - Thick Vermicelli/ Bee Hoon - Thin Vermicelli/ Yellow Noodles/ Kway Teow – Flat white noodles). My favourite is the Chor Bee Hoon - Thick Vermicelli.
You have an option of dry noodles which comes with a thick starchy brown sauce or noodles with soup.
For your order, there are a variety of options:
- Beef Ball: $4
- Sliced Beef with Beef Ball: $4
- Sliced Beef, Beef Ball with Stomach – Tripe: $5
- Sliced Beef, Beef Ball, Stomach – Tripe with Tendon: $6
- Tendons: $7
Most times, I will order the sliced beef and Beef Ball option at $4. If I am hungry, I will go for $5.
My lunch partner couldn’t resist the tendons and ordered a tendons with soup, for sharing.
I ordered the dry version - sliced beef and Beef Ball option. The thick starchy brown sauce was full of umami, with soy and beef flavour.
The beef was well cooked and the beef balls were nice and had a good bite. The tendons were also nice and soft.
There is always a queue here and you take about 20 minutes to get to your turn. But the wait is well worth it.
Highly-Recommended!

Good Local Fare at Rasa Istimewa  Smile Dec 04, 2014

Categories : Singaporean | Singaporean Western | Restaurant | Seafood | Halal

I have been talking to my colleagues about this restaurant for some time.
The restaurant is located on a jetty at Woodlands Waterfront Park and has a good view of the Johor skyline from Singapore. They serve halal 'Tze-Char' dishes, which is rare to find. They have a lot of Malay customers who come for meals with their families.
At a recent conversation with my colleagues, I proposed to head here for dinner and they agreed.
Here are the items we had:
- Salted Egg Crab (Wet): $70. Sri Lankan Crabs are used and they are about 1 – 1.5kg each. We had two crabs done with salted egg yolk. The uniqueness of this dish was that the sauce was ‘wet’, i.e. watery and coated the crab pieces, so you can
- Cereal Prawn: $25: Big prawns coated with cereal. Portions are decent and more than enough for the 5 of us at the table, as some of us had double portions.
- Grouper Fried - 3 Flavours (Mango, Thai Chilli and Lemon): $26. The grouper was butterflied into 2, coated with batter and deep-fried. The fish is then served on a plate and garnished with 3 types of toppings: Mango, Thai chilli and Lemon. Each of the topping imparted different flavours when you eat with the fish and you get to enjoy 3 different flavours with 1 dish! This is also a popular dish amongst other patrons.
- Mee Goreng: $5. My group ordered plain white rice. I ordered this, as I was craving for noodles. No regrets, as it was fried well, with good wok-hei. It was spicy. Portion is good for 3 to share, if you have ordered other ala carte items.
- Curry Fish Head: $24. Served in a claypot, the gravy is thick and cooked with coconut cream. It had a similar taste to laksa, with tau pok, lady’s fingers and brinjal slices. Goes well with white rice.
- BBQ Seafood Combo (Stingray, Cuttlefish & Lala): $28. The Stingray, cuttlefish and La la were barbequed over a flat pan and laden with sambal chilli. Its spicy, but yummy!
The food here is good, and it came shortly after the food was ordered.
There were also a good number of tables filled with large families having dinner there.
The restaurant is located in the middle of a pier, with a great view of the Johor right out the window. After your meal, you can enjoy a nice walk on the jetty or bring the kids to the large children's playground nearby.
A word of caution for drivers: Do put car park coupons for the duration of time you are spending there. The carpark attendants do come regularly to check!

A Good Find at Rochester Mall! Smile Nov 28, 2014

Categories : European | Restaurant | Desserts and Cakes | Steaks and Grills | Salads/ Acai Bowl

There is a new restaurant at The Rochester Mall that opened recently.
I came by this restaurant recently with colleagues to try out their food.
Here are the highlights:
- Seafood Bisque: $12. The bisque came with Prawn, Mussels and Toasted Crostini. The bisque is not thick and creamy. Nice.
- Mushroom Soup with Crème Fraiche and garlic croutons: $10. Not bad.
- Seared Sea Scallops with celeraic puree, sauteed spinach & soft boiled quail eggs: $22. We loved it. The scallops were nicely seared and juicy. The quail eggs'runny yolks were a nice touch. Try it!
- Lobster Risotto with watercress and sundried tomato: $28. I found this similar in taste to the seafood bisque. It's tasty and you get half a lobster.
- Slow cooked chicken leg with potatoes and vegetable ragout: $18. My favorite main course. The chicken was cooked Sous-vide, then roasted in the oven to give a nice even browning. Juicy and tasty. The portion was substantial and filling.
- Kurobuta Pork Chop: $30. Simply grilled and served with roasted potatoes & sauteed brussel sprouts. The piece came with the bone on. Quite substantial piece of meat and tasty on its own, as this dish did not come with any sauce. As you eat your way to the rib, you will see the fatty bits, and that was the most succulent part of the meat! I especially loved the fried sage leaves that accompanied the dish. It was delicious.
- Roasted Potatoes: $6. Loved this. It was our favorite amongst the side dishes that we ordered. The potatoes are cut into cubes about 1cm wide and roasted. Tasty and nice!
- Mashed Potatoes: $6. The mash potatoes were nice and smooth. Personally, I would have liked it to have more butter. When I commented to the staff, they said its possible to request for it next time. Good service!
- Tiramisu: $12. This was served in a glass cup and you can see the compnents of the Tiramisu through the sides of the glass. You get to enjoy the cocoa powder, cream and sponge fingers as you dig into the glass. Nice!
- Chocolate Lava Cake with berry compote and whipped cream: $12. The molten chocolate flowed out of the lava cake once it was cut. The restaurant doesn’t serve with ice cream like most other restuarants. You can scoop the berry compote and eat together with the chocolate cake for added flavour.
- Duo Panna Cotta with honey lemon sauce and pistachio: $9. Interesting where there are two flavours combined in the panna cotta – white cream-based flavour and dark brown cocoa flavour. Together with the honey lemon sauce, it was nice.
- Classic Lemon Tart: $9. The presentation was great. You get a nice wedge of lemon tart. The cream on the top is piped like a Christmas tree and flambe. Taste-wise, it was tart and lemon lovers will love this.
The quality of the food here is good and I enjoyed my meal.
The restaurant’s location at Rochester Mall is in close proximity to Holland Village, offering a tranquil environment to dine in without the hassle of car park issues.
Recommended!

Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Dim Sum | Seafood

Last weekend, I had lunch at Majestic Bay Seafood Restaurant. This is located at Garden By The Bay – Flower Dome. When you are at the main reception area of the Flower Dome (where you can purchase tickets for the flower dome), take the escalator down to the lower level, and its on the left of the escalator.
Here are the highlights of my meal:
- - Dim Sum
o Signature Chilli Crab Meat Bun: Done as a dim sum, where the crab meat is cooked with non-spicy chilli gravy and wrapped in a bun that is pan fried. Not spicy and it was nice.
o Scallop and Prawns Dumpling: This is done like a fried wanton. It has cut up prawns and sliced scallops filling. Good.
o Minced Pork and Yam Dumpling: Minced pork fillings in a mashed yam ‘cocoon’ that is deep fried. Crispy on the outside and a good dim sum dish to order. Try it!
o Steamed Vegetable Dumpling: Assortment of chopped up vegetables in a crystal dumpling.
o Shanghai Pork Dumpling: This is popularly known as Xiao Long Bao. It is a minced meat filled mini bun, which you dip into vinegar with ginger slices.
- Alaska King Crab Meat Soup with Minced Celery: The soup was slightly greenish in color, due to the minced celery and scooping in the soup, there was steamed custard at the bottom. I also got pieces of Alskan King Crabmeat in the soup. I personally found the soup a little salty.
- - Dragon Tiger Garoupa done two ways -
o Stewed withTofu sheet, Wild Mushrooms in Claypot: This is my first time tasting the Dragon Tiger Garoupa, which sounds very exotic. The fish has been deboned and filleted. It was stir-fried with 1cm wide cut pieces of tofu sheets and straw mushrooms in a claypot. I preferred this to the garoupa steamed with minced garlic.
o Steamed with Minced Garlic: Topped with roughly minced garlic and steamed. There was a coating of starch on the fish fillets, which made the fish slightly chewy. Would have preferred the fish not to have the starch coating, so that I could taste the fish properly.
- - Crispy Shredded Duck, Jiang Nan Style: The duck is shredded apart and the pieces are deep fried. The dish is topped with fried taro strips and julienned mango. I found the duck a tad too dry for my liking. I loved the fried taro and mango that topped the dish though.
- - Braised Homemade Tofu with Chinese Mushrooms in Abalone Sauce: The tofu were deep fried till golden brown on the outside. The Chinese mushrooms were big and juicy. It came with blanched Romaine lettuce that were crunchy.
- - Stewed Bee Hoon with Boston Lobster: Each person got a piece of boston lobster that has been stewed with medium rice vermicelli. The Vermicelli soaked up the gravy and was tasty.
- - Fresh Mango Puree with Chendol Strips: The first time I am drinking it out of a tall cup, instead of eating with a spoon.
I will be back soon to try out their steamed yellow duckling bun filled with Nutella and Yam paste.

Categories : Chinese | Hawker Centre

I was at Chinatown hawker centre recently and was walking around, undecided on what to eat.
When I am about to cover the last row of shops at the hawker centre, I chanced upon this stall that had a queue of about 6 people.
The stall sells only 3 items: Yam cake, Radish cake, Peanut porridge.
I had a craving for yam cake earlier in the day and that craving helped me decide to try this stall out.
I ordered the mixed platter of yam cake and radish cake, and a bowl of peanut porridge.
Here’s the verdict:
- - Yam cake: This is steamed in a 50cm circle tray, and the owner cuts pieces to fill each customer’s order. It is done Cantonese style, with a generous sprinkling of white and black sesame seeds. The yam cake is dark purple. This is one of the better ones that I have had. You can eat it on its own or with the sweet brown sauce and/ or chilli.
- - Radish cake: Also steamed in a 50cm circle tray, it has dried shrimp in it. Also delicious. Recommended.
- - Peanut porridge: Cantonese style smooth porridge, with soft peanuts. Eating there costs 70 cent, while takeaway is $1.
I liked what I ate, so I ordered two packs of mixed yam cake and radish cake to go.
This stall opens at 5pm in the evenings and will close when they sell out. This is usually about 7pm.
I recommend ordering the mixed yam cake and radish cake, so you can try both and see which you prefer.
Do go and try them out!
