Lamb Cupcakery Smile Jun 05, 2013
Categories : American | Bakery

A colleague of mine kept singing praises about the cupcakes served from this shop and I was initially skeptical. After all, so many cupcake shops have sprung out in Singapore, so what makes cupcakes from Lamb Cupcakery any more special than the others?

I got to try first hand when my colleague bought a box of cupcakes for us to sample. I was really blown away by the quality of the flavours and Lamb cupcakery is part of my to-buy list. The cupcakes were quite big- not like the small, reductive versions served elsewhere. The presentation of cupcakes were also decent- the garnishing and frosting really made the cupcakes looked pretty. My recommended must get flavours (if they are not sold out of it!):

Mango puree- The frosting cream really tasted like fresh mango, not the super uber sweet artificial kind and went really well with the soft cake base below it. I was amazed by how tasty the mango flavour was and this will definitely please mango lovers.
Milo- This is a uniquely Singapore, definite must get flavour from this shop. Those who want to satisfy their chocolate craving but want to avoid the overly heavy decadent chocolate flavours should go for the milo flavour. It is so special- I haven't seen any other shops with milo cupcakes. The flavour encapsulates the chocolately, malty flavour of milo in every bite of the cupcake and this flavour is definitely a crowd pleaser.
Red velvet- I really like the rich red velvet cupcake topped with a layer of cream cheese topping which is also another crowd pleaser. I like how the slightly sour cream cheese topping is paired with the slightly dense red cake.

Each cupcake cost slightly more at $3.50 each, but I guess you pay a premium for bigger size and quality taste. Location wise, Lamb Cupcakery seems really off, but if I happen to be around the area, I would definitely check out the place!

Sushi Tei Smile Jun 04, 2013

We arrived on a Saturday afternoon for lunch- there was a lunch crowd and we had to queue for about 20 mins to get a table. I ordered scallop soba noodle soup- you can choose the noodles you desire to go with the dish- soba, udon or ramen. The noodles were served warm with copious amounts of cooked egg white pieces and scallops. I really enjoyed the hot fragrant soup broth, coupled with the many thick scallops that accompanied the noodles. This dish will definitely warm you up during cold weather! Also, green tea is served free here. We initially thought that green tea was chargeable and were hesitant to get drinks. The service staff did not really prompt us about drinks and did not serve us anything, but it was also our fault for not clarifying about the cost of green tea.

Tom's Palette Smile Jun 04, 2013
Categories : Café | Ice Cream and Gelato

I visited Tom's Palette and was surprised to find even more unique and weird combinations of ice cream flavours available. Tom's Palette wins hands down for ice cream flavour innovation. The usual flavours are available- but flavours like wasabi lime, beancurd youtiao really piqued my interest. I was naturally curious about the flavours on display, and the staff very kindly allowed me to sample the flavours before deciding on the 2 flavours I wanted in my cup. Here are the 2 flavours I decided:

Very Bery Matcha- it is the flavour of the month and it is basically rich matcha ice cream combined with blueberry. Since both green tea and blueberry are known to contain antioxidants, this flavour is touted to be a "superfood" haha. The combination of green tea and blueberry went surprisingly well. I enjoyed the slightly bitter sweet matcha paired together with the sweetness of blueberries- an really unique combination. Lavender- I am a big fan of lavender but I was concerned that the lavender taste would be quite mild and not be easily detected. To my surprise, the lavender ice cream served here delivers an intense lavender flavour, a nice floral flavour that filled my cavity with each spoonful of ice cream.

I would definitely return to Tom's Palette to sample more of their quality and unique ice cream flavours!

Liu Sa Bun  Cry Jun 04, 2013
Categories : Bakery

I happened to be around the area and decided that I had to get some of the bakery's liu sa bun. Unfortunately, they weren't ready yet and I was told a fresh batch will be out within an hour. I decided to roam around the area and do some shopping before returning in an hour's time to buy the bun. It was fresh out of the oven, and I was delighted that it was still warm. As usual, the bread was soft and fluffy. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed by my purchase this time round- the filling was really little and I could not taste much of the salted egg yolk filling, there was just custard. I'm not sure if they might have compromised on the quality as they rushed the bread out for me. I was very disappointed and I do feel the next time you want to buy your favourite bread and are asked to wait for a long time for it, just get some other bread instead.

Thai Express OK Jun 04, 2013

We arrived near closing time, but the staff very graciously allowed us into the restaurant and served us. I ordered glass noodles tossed in black pepper sauce and topped with soft shelled crab. I liked their soft shell crab, it was crispy and there were quite a bit of crab pieces served in the dish. The only downside is that it is slightly too oily. The glass noodles are tossed in black pepper sauce- while I did not find the black pepper overwhelmingly spicy, I did however felt that the glass noodles had absorbed too much of the sauce and it was slightly too salty for me, especially after a few mouthfuls.
