Macaron mania Smile Jun 03, 2011
Categories : Singaporean | Café

Available in 15 flavors, Darcis's robustly flavored macarons boast satisfyingly crunchy and meaty shells. Out of the four flavors I tried, the star performer was the Chocolate macaron, which boasted a smooth, refined ganache. The Blackcurrant Violet macaron also pleased with its generous layer of fruity buttercream.

Being a fan of macarons with tender interiors, I found Darcis' macarons too chewy for my liking. My vote still goes to those from Jewels Artisan Chocolate. But of course, nothing compares to Pierre Hermé's- more about them another time!

I also had La Dame Blanche ($8.80+)- a cold creation featuring lusciously smooth and rich vanilla ice cream served with chocolate sauce and chantilly cream.

Awfully sinful desserts :P Smile Jun 03, 2011

After a healthy dinner of wholemeal rosemary chicken sandwiches at Cedele, my friends and I adjourned to Awfully Chocolate for awfully sinful desserts.
Super Stacked Chocolate Cake

Super Stacked Chocolate Cake

Best served warm, Awfully Chocolate's Super Stacked Chocolate Cake ($6.50 per 100g) features the company's signature All Chocolate cake smothered with six layers of fudge, each prepared from a different type of chocolate. My friend ordered this with a scoop of dark chocolate ice cream, and I regretted not following suit- the richness of the fudge layers was a little overwhelming when the cake was eaten on its own, but it made a great pair with the cold, creamy ice cream!

Baskin Robbins Smile Jun 03, 2011
Categories : American | Ice Cream and Gelato

Baskin Robbins- the world's largest ice cream speciality chain- reopened its first outlet in Singapore at The Clementi Mall last Sunday. Another outlet has since opened at Velocity@Novena Square.

Prices here are on par with fellow American ice cream parlor Ben and Jerry's, with prices starting at $4 for a junior scoop (2.5 oz) and $5 for a single scoop (4oz). I opted for a double scoop (two 2.5oz ) which was priced at $6.
Toasted Coconut Crunch & Butter Pecan

Toasted Coconut Crunch & Butter Pecan

Being American-style ice cream, the flavors were on the sweet side. I foresee myself ordering Toasted Coconut Crunch (above) again the next time I drop by Baskin-Robbins. Smooth and creamy, the toasted coconut custard flavored ice cream was perfectly complemented by a swirl of sweet and buttery caramel and pralined cashews.

While Old Fashioned Butter Pecan (below) had a nice toffee flavor, it could have done with a smoother texture. More of those crunchy toasted pecans would also have been welcome!

Recommended Dish(es):  Toasted Coconut Crunch

Spending per head: Approximately $6(Other)

Durian treats, all year round Smile Dec 31, 2010
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Hotel | High Tea | Buffet

Launched only this year, Goodwood Park Hotel's homemade durian ice cream is available until 7 January 2011 for takeaway from the Deli at S$14.80 for a 16oz tub. Smooth, creamy and robust in flavor, the durian ice cream here ($6.50++ a scoop) is easily one of the best in Singapore. If only it was less pricey!

I also ordered the Durian crêpes ($15++). I love the fact this item is permanently featured on the menu, providing me with my durian fix even when the theony fruit is not in season. This dessert compirised two thin crêpes generously filled with smooth and creamy D24 durian pulp, crowned with a scoop of Mövenpick vanilla ice cream. Don't be fooled by the seemingly manageable portion size in the above picture- I would not advise one to attempt to finish this by oneself after a meal, unless you have an unusually large appetite for durian creations.

Canelé Pâtisserie Chocolaterie  Smile Dec 31, 2010
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Café | Desserts and Cakes

Canelé Pâtisserie Chocolaterie is better known as a dessert haunt. But, like any other brunch lover, I was excited to discover out that its Paragon outlet serves breakfast too. There were other tempting options like Eggs Florentine and French Toast, but I expectedly headed straight for the Blueberry Pancakes ($7.50++).

To my dismay, Canelé's pancakes were not of the fluffy American variety I was expecting. While I still like the latter version better, the thin and crêpe-like European-style pancakes served were faultlessly light and soft. Even better when studded with sweet blueberries and accompanied by a sprinkling of powdered sugar, a generous drizzle of maple syrup and clouds of light crème chantilly!

On another ocassion, I had L'amour ($8++), an ice cream creation which I will gladly order it over and over again. The combination of fragrant, lusioucs rose petal ice cream with crunchy rose meringue and lychee pieces is bound to blow away any fan of Ispahan.

The service here was slow though- the bill took a long time to arrive during both visits.
