Didn't quite hit the spot OK May 23, 2013

Everyone has been raving about Omakase. I had to try it for myself and I finally found the opportunity to try it today.

I ordered the Omakase Cheeseburger and had the patty done the recommended way - medium. No regrets about this cos it wasn't too tough and the meat was just right. The buns were very, very good. Super fresh and practically soaked with butter on the inside, and beautifully crunchy on the fine, outer layer. Had truffle fries as part of my meal, not the greatest. I've had better. Total damage for fries, burger and a drink? $22.90. Yikes...

Was it worth it? Yes, for that one time. Would I return to spend that kind of money again on something so small? Nope.

The best escargot! Smile May 20, 2013
Categories : American | Steaks and Grills

My family frequents the AMK branch, especially when it's somebody's birthday. My usuals include the sambal steak, or the ribeye. This time I had the ribeye and it was great as usual. I was afraid they'd overdo the doneness (they couldn't get it right in the past), but this time it was all right.

Another usual order of mine is the escargot. I have to resist ordering 2 dozens because this is super sinful. It's full of butter and garlic and it's super duper good! Tip: lightly drizzle hot sauce over the escargot for that extra zest!

Pretty good mee pok Smile May 20, 2013

Categories : Chinese

It's true that you can smell the good food all the way from outside. That's the reason why I stepped into Ah Guan in the first place.

I used to come here regularly, now it's just every once in a while. I have to say, they have the prettiest mee pok here. Look at those shells! Medium's a good size to order, but it never seems to be enough. Ask for extra chilli and vinegar!

Other dishes I love are their porridges. Served in a claypot, it's A LOT for a small price, you can even share it.

I come to Flamingg Mangos once in a while (it'd be more frequent if it wasn't so out of the way!) and I love how laid-back the place is. It's right smack in the middle of a cluster of private homes and there's all sorts of food on the menu, from pastas to steaks to bar bites and cocktails.

I love their Top Shells, which is served with loads of chilli padi (warning: this can get really spicy). It goes great with beer! They also make very good pasta, and my usual is the Aglio with Prawns. Good stuff!!

Hidden Jap food joint OK May 18, 2013
Categories : Japanese | Sushi/Sashimi

I'm not a big fan of Japanese food, but my colleagues were keen on having Jap for lunch this particular weekday so we headed to this quiet dining joint at Far East Plaza.

When I stepped in I was pleasantly surprised by the interior. It looks like one of those eateries you can find along the streets of Japan (vague memories from the time I visited the country when I was only 5) - definitely different compared to modern places like Sushi Tei.

The concept's like a sushi bar so you sit on high chairs around the counter. It was a little uncomfortable and the place is extremely small so... that's one thing I didn't like. Also, the service wasn't say very attentive. And they were right in front of us the whole time - you'd think they'd pay a little more attention huh?

Anyway, for my main dish I had the chicken (Don? Donburi? No idea! - $10) rice thingy with egg. It was a little too bland for my liking, but it was very filling. Had to use lots of shoyu sauce to make it taste better.

I ordered a plate of salmon bellly sashimi ($7+) to share with a colleague. As I mentioned, I'm not a big fan of Jap food, but I do admit I'm completely head over heels in love with salmon sashimi and salmon-anything. However, this was my first time trying salmon belly and although it's super duper fresh here (no fishy taste AT ALL!), I didn't like the fact that it was soooo fatty. It was very "gelad" and I could only take 2-3 slices before feeling a little nauseous. I think I'll stick to normal salmon sashimi from now on - but I'm sure there are many of you who love salmon belly so do try it here!
