Meal under 600 calories! Smile Sep 10, 2013

Smoothie King boasts healthy eats -the menu board comes with not just the price list but also the calories in whatever you order. A weight watchers' paradise, Smoothie King offers not just wholesome grub but also tasty-as-hell shakes that are certain to tickle every tummy.

We ordered a Grilled Chicken Teriyaki Wrap (286cals) and a Grilled Chicken w Garlic Aoli Wrap (385calories) for $5.90 each, and a Berry Banana Smoothie (241 calories) at $5.30.

The grilled chicken teriyaki wrap is more full on flavour compared to the garlic aoli, in my opinion (even though the garlic aoli has more calories!). The chicken breast is tender, coupled with fresh greens, a delightfully soft wrap (this one wasn't hard but rather had a nice, soft & chewy quality to the skin!) and the faint taste of soy sauce in the teriyaki. I liked this one very much!

The garlic aoli wrap tends to get soggier than the chicken teriyaki because of all that aoli! This one has a slightly more refreshing taste because of the sauce used. The chicken breast is equally tender in this one, and it's really a matter of preference for the sauces. If you like your taste more on the savoury side, teriyaki would work better. This one has a more "clean" feel because of the tanginess and lightness of the flavour!

Standard, tacky plastic cup but the contents are sooo good!! The smoothie is completely thick and creamy and the richness of the banana has this thick, aromatic quality that really hits the spot! The berries aren't too sour and gives a good contrast to the banana. Banana-berry combos are always a winner. Try this if you are at a loss of what to order.

Service here is great! -You order at the counter and get a buzzer to pick up your food at a separate counter. The smoothie choices are amazing and the quality is really good too. Perhaps the best part of choosing Smoothie King is knowing what you're really eating and the fact that you're choosing healthier alternatives.

Pontian WTM Smile Sep 05, 2013

Pontian Wanton Mee is probably one of those wanton mee places that have been synonymous with crazy lunchtime crowds packed with office workers and hungry students. I've never really gotten round to trying their noodles despite hearing so much about it -today was an exception because Graffiti Cafe is really empty pre-lunch, at around 11.

They serve not only wanton mee, but also other snacks + coffee and tea. For $3.80/$4.30 you can expect a hearty bowl of wanton noodles w a bowl of soup.

This $3.80 bowl came with 2 fried and 2 steamed wantons, sliced charsiew and chye sim. The noodles were a pleasant surprise because they had a nice spring to it, al dente, the way it should be! The first time I had a mouthful of the pontian wanton me it was so unbearably salty that i never thought I would ever try it again. This one however, was just right. The chilli wasn't overly spicy such that it ruined the taste of everything else.

While the wantons were really small, they were nevertheless tasty. The fried ones weren't bitter and had a particular fragrance to it that was oddly appetising despite it being deep fried. The steamed ones however, had a really thin skin and were on the verge of disintegrating. Texture aside, the taste was there.

Pontian Wanton Mee is a quickfix for your wtm cravings in the comfort of a cafe style setting. It gets pretty crowded though so I wouldn't recommend you hang around after polishing off your bowl of noodles!

Hawker Centre Dim Sum OK Sep 01, 2013
Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Hawker Centre | Dim Sum

Hong Kong Dim Sum offers a range of maybe only 8 different dim sum offerings, but each are reasonably priced at $2.50 and these include favourites such as siew mai, har gow, congee and chee cheong fun! What perhaps draws people to this stall is that the dim sum is freshly steamed for you upon ordering so its served piping hot!

We ordered Har gow, Siew Mai, (shrimp) Chee Cheong Fun and Pork Ribs, each at $2.50.

The Har Gow has a translucent skin with supple, fresh shrimp. While we did enjoy the filling, we would have preferred the skin to be a bit less sticky. The flouriness also became apparent when the har gow cooled. Nevertheless, it is worth a try given that it's only $2.50 smile

The Siew Mai is really piping hot and you can't eat this in one bite (challenge accepted?) The size the siewmai here is significantly larger than other places and the meat is really tasty! It was a bit salty though, but we wouldn't deny that the size + flavour were all there. If you like your food light and refreshing -this might not be so ideal for you. Go for har gow seconds instead!

The Chee Cheong Fun has shrimp in it and it's really fresh and supple, however the chee cheong fun was slightly flourry and the skin wasn't very smooth. it doesn't have the silky quality that shimmies between your lips when you slurp it up sad I'm very picky with ccf though, so if you're not too particular with it this should do the trick.

The pork rib wasn't exactly fresh and there were tiny bone bits inside. While the taste was good -you can taste the sesame oil and the savouriness of the soy sauce etc, the texture of the meat ruined it for me. I don't deny that it tasted nice though. Just would have preferred tender meat without small bones inside!

P.S. The food here is a bit salty by my standards and the skin of the hargow/ccf isn't too smooth. For the price though it is pretty worth it as the portions are substantial -try the siewmai! They are huge, tasty and juicy smile

HK Cafe Smile Aug 25, 2013

Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Halal

Streats HK Cafe at Downtown East is one of the halal establishments that serve a good variety of HK cuisine to the Singaporean market at reasonable prices. While the restaurant is generally clean and no-frills, there is a wide range of choices for the dishes ranging from rice and noodles to dim sum, fusion-HK/Western creations and an array of drinks (think: ice blends, desserts and the usual milk teas)
Milk Tea w Glass Jelly

Milk Tea w Glass Jelly

I ordered their milk tea with glass (grass?) jelly - $3.80. The tea aroma and taste is quite strong -being very different from the super-milky Koi bubble tea or Gong Cha, this one really hits the spot for true tea lovers. It has a slight sappy film though, which wasn't completely unpleasant...Its a matter of preference for this. Opt for the grass jelly for your milk tea -it makes a delicious (albeit seemingly strange) difference! Definitely recommending this to everyone.
Thick Toast w Butter & Honey

Thick Toast w Butter & Honey

The thick toast ($4.20) isn't like french toast -the bread quality is more similar to the bread in kaya toast, with two slices sandwiched together. The toast is crusty and well, really toasted (duh!). The honey did not drown the bread in an unnecessary sweetness, the flavour was just right. Coupled with the butter, this makes for a truly delicious afternoon snack. I might add too that the butter wasn't in excess, so dig in without guilt!
Shrimp Dumpling Noodle Soup

Shrimp Dumpling Noodle Soup

The noodles (~$10+/-) in this were still springy, and the soup was clear. Its a really light dish for anyone who wants something soupy. They are also really generous with the shrimp wantons and the vegetables so no complaints here. While the shrimp wanton was realllllly compact (the filling was rly stuffed in!) and the soup was of a clear lightness, this dish wasn't particularly stellar. In due fairness, the simplicity of this dish made it extremely difficult for it to score as extraordinary though!

The service here is friendly and if you do not wish to rush with the lunchtime crowd or the dinner rush, we recommend dropping by in the afternoon at 4 or so for some tea and toast : ) Great news for NTUC card members too as they are entitled to discounts here!

Original Tj Rhu Wantan Mee! Smile Aug 24, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Chinese | Hawker Centre | Noodles

$2.50 value for money wantan mee is soon becoming a rarity with inflated prices in the local dining scene. Yet at Jalan Batu Market, this hawker centre is home to the famous Tanjong Rhu Wantan Mee (there are 2 variations to this -the one originally at the coffee shop which has moved into the food centre, as well as the wantan mee stall pre-existing in the food centre!)

$2.50 gets you this lovely, breakfast-portioned plate of springy noodles, charsiew, a decent amount of vegetables (i do consider this imperative in the dish as it provides contrast) as well as 3 small dumplings. These dumplings are compactly wrapped with tasty minced meat, in a clear soup floating with spring onions. The balance of flavours in this dish harmonises effortlessly with the right touch of savouriness and (if you do opt for it) chilli. if you're feeling hungry, id say go for the $3 portion! Yum.

The aunty, incidentally, is also really friendly with the orders, so that's great news for us smile
