Saw this cute little kiosk at the "New York" section and they had quite a decent amount of items on their menu. There were drinks such as Iced Milo Snow and Iced Peach Tea, Waffle with Maple/Raspberry/Chocolate or with a scoop of Ice Cream, and Desserts such as Character Cupcakes or Ice Cream. And of course, Cookies! There were Character Cookies, Mini Cookies, Giant Cookie and even a Cookie Ice Cream Burger here!

I was actually keen on the Character Cupcakes ($4.80) but was informed by the friendly but apologetic staff that this was not available so I went with the Character Cookie ($3.80) instead.

Cookie Monster Character Cookie ($3.80)
A cookie designed in the shape of Cookie Monster. This was a tad soft when I ate it but that probably got to do with the fact that I ate it a few hours later at home. It was actually kept chilled at the kiosk so it might be better to eat it on the spot while it was still chilled and possibly still firm. Other than it not being as crunchy as I'd like, this was still quite decent in taste. The mouth part was made of chocolate which I thought was a nice touch to what would otherwise taste like a normal biscuit.

This was quite a big piece of cookie but I thought the price was a tad pricey for just a cookie. There was actually a cheaper but plain, round cookie selling at $2.80, but you might as well pay a little more to try a specially designed cookie just for the heck and experience of it while you're on Sesame Street at "New York". Do I sense a tourist trap here?

Other than the character cookies, they were also selling the drinks in character cups. Here, you can get Sesame Street Elmo or Oscar cup with the drinks. I initially thought of getting a drink in the Oscar cup but balked at the princely price of $19.90 to get it with the Iced Milo. But then again, the cup alone costs $19.90 in the souvenir stores. Oh, tourist trap all right. I suspect "Me Want Cookie And Your Money" might be a better signboard name instead!

(But really, give the Character Cookies a try. Now, if only I can get my hands on those Character Cupcakes....).

Churros!! Smile Jan 16, 2014

First thing I wanted to try at USS: Churros!

This "Hollywood Churro Co." at the intersection between Hollywood, New York and Madagascar was the first kiosk I saw selling Churros and I immediately jumped at the chance to buy one to try. There was quite a bit of a queue and the Churros sold out while I was still queuing but fortunately, the kind staff brought in a new batch and I managed to get my hand on one.

Fresh-Made Churros ($4.00)
I found the price to be a little pricey at $4.00 for just one small stick but compared to the prices of some other food at the other USS kiosks , it was certainly one of the more "decently" priced item! I like that the churro was sweet but not cloying, and had a hint of cinnamon. The edges were also quite crispy but soft on the inside.

It would be perfect with chocolate sauce but this was also pretty tasty on its own! There were also other items like the Noodle Hotdog, ice cream and various drinks here at this kiosk but I'd recommend trying the Churro when you are here!

Pretty Cakes @ The Icing Room! Smile Jan 12, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Singaporean | Bakery | Desserts and Cakes

The Icing Room is another concept by BreadTalk offering DIY cake decoration services, although they have their own range of cakes and confections which I rather prefer to purchase from. With its pretty, sweet and girly decor and confections, I must say, it certainly impressed on first sight!

It is a habit of mine to check out their display of pretty cakes whenever I pass by the area, whether or not I buy anything. But I have tried several of their products before from cakes like the Katherina Tiramisu to their other ranges of confections like cake pops, macarons, brownies, cupcakes, muffins and biscuit puffs.

When I saw this pretty, colourful and fluffy little creation when I passed by one day, I just had to get it to try!

Top Center: "Rainbow Cake" ($5.20)
I don't really know the exact name, and neither did the salesgirl when I asked. She just said it was a "rainbow cake" with no specific taste in particular. Indeed, this was rather plain and mild in taste although I thought I detected a hint of berries in some bites. The sponge layers were soft and spongy with cream in between layers which helped to balance the dryness a little. Overall, I found this an okay even though it does look pretty colorful and fluffy!

Bottom Left: Tiramisu Macaron ($1.80)
Bottom Right: Earl Grey & Blueberry Macaron ($1.80)

Each macaron piece cost $1.80 although you can buy 3 for $5.00. The flavour I like best among the macarons at the Icing Room is Chocolate but they didn't have it when I went so I just went with Tiramisu and Earl Grey & Blueberry. The shells were crispy but only just a little chewy. I wasn't too impressed with the Earl Grey macaron as it felt a tad "wet" and the filling was thin but the Tiramisu macaron fared much better with a crispier shell and slightly stronger flavour. These were quite okay but I've tasted better macarons elsewhere.

Chocolate Walnut Muffin ($1.50)
This little muffin was quite soft and there was a fair amount of chocolate chips and walnuts in it for the added crunch. There was also a hint of banana and I liked that the muffin was not too sweet. I've also tried the chocolate flavour which I liked as well for its chocolate-y taste. Yummy!

Overall, I think the muffins at the Icing Room were quite decent and worth a try. The cake pops were also not bad - soft, chocolatey and moist on the inside - although the sprinkle topping was a tad sweet for my taste. The cakes here were pretty although taste-wise they were kind of a hit-or-miss for me. In general though, I loved the chocolate ones like the Caprice ($5.80) or Boston Chocolate ($4.20) for the richer taste. I'd definitely get those again!

Snow White Among Breads Smile Jan 11, 2014

Categories : Bakery

Four Leaves is one of my favourite bakeries and I am glad that there are several branches of the bakery all over Singapore for added convenience. While passing by a branch at IMM, I decided to get some bread for myself and the family.

Snow Blanc ($2.50)
One of my favourite Four Leaves breads is Snow Blanc, which was recommended to me by my mum. This feels really silky smooth and soft in the mouth. Even the crust is quite soft compared to those like Gardenia or Sunshine! I tried using Snow Blanc to make ham and cheese sandwich and it was as tasty as breads can be. I also tried it toasted with jam but if you ask me, I rather eat it untoasted just to savour the smoothness of the bread! And yes, this was definitely good enough to eat plain on its own! At $2.50 per loaf, this may seem to be a tad pricey but I found this to be worth the price, especially if you enjoyed the smooth and soft texture like I did!

Kaya Bun ($1.10)
I also bought a few kaya buns for the family. At only $1.10 each, this was pretty affordable. The bread was soft with a decent amount of kaya in it, which my mum liked. I thought this was quite okay but there are other breads from Four Leaves that I personally liked more.

The quality and taste of the bread among the Four Leaves branches (at least those I've been to) are quite consistent. The prices of their bread and cakes are also reasonable compared to some other bakery chains. Service was quite decent at the IMM branch although I think the service was much better at the Causeway Point branch but nevertheless, it is still worth a visit especially for the breads like the Snow Blanc!

At one corner of Woodlands Civic Centre almost hidden from view by Jollibean, you can find a small, quaintly decorated kiosk aptly titled "Kopi Alley". My mum and I thought of getting some toast to takeaway when we realized that they actually have tables inside the small space next to the kiosk, which made use of the narrow space by decorating it to look like a narrow alley with wooden tables and chairs on a faux road!

We decided to take a short tea break in this "alley" instead.

Like other stores like Ya Kun and Toast Box, Kopi Alley also sells a range of Traditional Toasts, Thick Toast and Soft Bun like Butter Kaya Toast ($1.60) and Peanut Butter Toast ($1.60). For those with a sweet tooth, there is also a "must try" Chocolate & Chopped Nuts Traditional Toast, Thick Toast or Soft Bun ($1.60). There is also a variety of Cream Crackers like Butter & Jam Crackers ($1.40), which looks quite interesting. You can also find other local delights such as Mee Siam ($3.50), Chwee Kueh ($1.80 for 4 pieces) and Pau like Tau Sar Pau ($0.80) or Teriyaki Chicken Pau and Honey Chicken Pau ($1.00). Drink-wise, there are hot drinks like Kopi O ($1.00), Milo ($1.50) and Crysanthemum Tea ($1.20), while cold drinks range from Iced Kopi ($1.70) to Iced Honey Lemon ($2.30) to Milo Dinosaur ($2.60). There is even a Japanese Azuki Red Bean Latte Iced Blend ($3.20). Quite a variety for a little store in the alley!

Since we were only here for tea, we opted for a few basic items only.

Kopi O ($1.00)
This was quite aromatic but a tad too bitter for both my mum and myself.

Kaya Toast ($1.60)
This was actually Butter Kaya Toast but we asked to just have the kaya which the staff was willing to accommodate. The toast was quite crispy and the kaya had just the right amount of sweetness. My mum gave the thumb up for their kaya, which she liked for the strong pandan taste.

Honey Chicken Pau ($1.00)
The pau was a little small but it was quite soft and the chicken filling was quite tender and tasty. Overall this was pretty decent and reasonable for only $1.00!

Mee Siam ($3.50)
We bought this home to share with the rest of the family. This came with a whole hard-boiled egg, a generous serving of taupok cubes and vermicelli. This was pretty spicy and sweet but we agreed that it wasn't sour enough. But I liked the taupok cubes which was quite tasty after soaking in the gravy!

Overall, I think the pau and toasts here are quite decent and I wouldn't mind coming back to this alley again to try the other items on the menu. Service was also quite decent and the prices are also reasonable and on par with other similar stores like Toast Box. The concept of a "Kopi Alley" with its somewhat old-school decor is another pulling factor. In fact, my mum even suggested coming again for tea another time to try the chwee kueh here! lol
