Nasi Ayam Smile May 25, 2012

Categories : Food Court | Chicken Rice

The name of this stall, ''Nasi Ayam'',
is quick to catch your attention in this huge food court in the HDB Hub.
Why? Well, this is not a Chicken Rice stall that sells Malay-style chicken rice.

It is your usual local Chicken rice stall that sells noodles as well.
We ordered Roast Chicken Rice and Vegetable with Oyster Sauce.
My favourite is the breast meat, and I always ask for that. tongue

The Soup that came with the Chicken Rice was piping hot and full of flavour - Mmm!
The chicken was soft, juicy and tender. The rice was soft, fluffy and moist as well.
The vegetable complemented the Chicken Rice well.

The service was prompt and the price was reasonable.
Of course, this Food Court is perpetually busy and noisy, so you must think twice if you want
a quiet, peaceful lunch.
Overall, the Chicken Rice or Nasi Ayam is good and we will be back for more!!

Old Time Favourites Smile May 25, 2012

Categories : Malay | Coffeeshop

We chanced upon this Indian coffee shop-style restaurant when we visited Changi Village after a long time.
The restaurant was busy, with many workers who had just finished the afternoon shift dropping by.
The menu was extensive and comprised many times of Indian dishes.
There were also dishes that had already been prepared and displayed.

We decided to try the Fried Bee Hoon or Mee Hoon Goreng (with mutton) and ''Kottu" Prata.
Fried Bee Hoon is an all-time favourite at many Indian restaurants.
The Bee Hoon is fried with a tantalisng sauce, bean sprouts, egg, vegetables and generous portions of mutton chunks. Nowadays, many restaurants do not add mutton, as it is counted as an extra charge.
This is one of the few old-time restaurants that adds mutton and many other ingredients.
The result was yummy Mee Hoon Goreng!

The other dish we ordered was the ''Kottu'' Prata. What is this?
It is actually Prata that is torn into pieces and fried/sauteed together with chicken, egg, vegetables and other spices.
It is like cooking chicken curry, except that this one is dry. The ingredients are mixed and smashed; hence the word, '
''Kottu'', which means smashed into small pieces (in Tamil).
This dish is fast becoming extinct in Singapore. It is almost impossible to find it in most restaurants and hawker stalls. The last time we ate this was in Johor Bahru! The manner of preparation may sound easy, but it is impotant to have the right consistency for the prata. It should not get too soft or mushy.
The dish was fabulous! After a long time, it was really wonderful to taste it again.

The service was prompt and prices were reasonable.
Overall, the food was fantastic and I will definitely go back for more -
perhaps the Briyani next? tongue

Long Time No Long John's OK Apr 30, 2012
Categories : Fast Food | Halal

It has really been ages since we visited Long John Silver's, so I was really excited about going there again. However, it wasn't the most memorable of visits!

The main problem started with the ordering! The staff at the counter seemed to find it so difficult to explain himself and communicate in simple English. It was really frustating to have to keep repeating myself!

There was an additional soup to top up a meal - Clam Chowder.
Though it smelt good, it didn't taste as good after a few sips.
As for the food - Chicken and Prawns, it was ok. The batter was not too thick and the chicken and prawns had been well dipped and fried.
Somehow, I remember the taste being very different in the past and realised that it had been quite a while since our last visit.
The fries were not crispy; instead they were soft and soggy!

The salad was just ok, it was not fresh and you could tell that it had just come out of the refrigerator - because it was icy cold!
The crunchy bits were a welcome sight - those were still there.
At Long John's we always longed to bite on those tiny, crunchy pieces of batter, and we were grateful to see those on our plates.

Overall, it wasnt like the good old days, but it wasnt that bad, either.
I do hope that the staff wil be given more training.

The stall at the Food Republic at Nex was not as crowded as it usually is on that day.

I ordered the smaller portion of the Fried Prawn Noodle @ $4.20.
The portion was quite a generous one and the seafood (prawns and cuttlefish) in it was
fresh. However, despite it being a piping hot serving that was not too dry, it was not up to my expectation. It still did not reach the standard of other similar dishes I had tasted.

Overall, it is ok if you're in a hurry and need to have a quick meal.
There is nothing much to savour here, though!
The service was good and the environment ok.

Fat Noodle Laksa Smile Apr 30, 2012

Categories : Singaporean | Coffeeshop

It was almost closing time when we got to this oulet of ToastBox at Nex, but the crowd was not getting any smaller.

A craving for Fat Noodle Laksa had brought us here.
Yes, the Laksa at ToastBox is made using the short and fat worm-like noodle and is called
Laksa Mee Tai Mak. This type of noodle is not commonly found nowadays and it often reminds me of macaroni. Another interesting point to note is that all you need to eat this laksa is a huge soup spoon. There is no real need for a fork or chopsticks either.
The noodle goes very well with the gravy - a perfect combination smile

The gravy was thick and spicy...Mmmm tongue
The laksa had a generous amount of fishcake, taupok and prawns in it.
Though it was close to closing time, there was no rush in the preparation and the laksa tasted as good as the first bowl would have.
The tiny crushed curry leaves added to the taste. as well.

The Fat Noodle Lasa will always remain on my must-have list at Toast Box.
