Myanmar Food OK Dec 31, 2013

My sister has been telling me about a place that serves decent Myanmar food. Curious and since I happen to be free, I decide to drop by for lunch with my sisters.

Inle Myanmar Restaurant is located in Peninsula Plaza and I think there are more than 2 restaurants serving Myanmar cuisine though my sister told me the other restaurant that serves cheap but equally good or better food has closed.

Anyway I reached the restaurant around 12.30pm with my sisters and the restaurant seems to be half full. My sister recommended a couple of dishes and we ended up ordering 2 main dishes, 2 appetizers and 2 drinks to share.

The Tea Leaves Salad Mix ($6) is actually a very refreshing and appetizing appetizer. I was initially quite hesitant when I saw a lot of unknown ingredients (to me) but my sister kept insisting and I am glad I did. It is very crunchy and it feels like I was munching on chips.

The Crispy Tofu ($6) didn’t impress me a lot. It is not literally sliced tofu and deep fried. Rather it seems like minced tofu and wrapped with another thin layer before it is fried. Luckily it tastes a little bit better with the gravy provided.

My sister and I shared a Butter Flavoured Rice with Chicken Curry ($8.50) and the chicken is really tender and easy to peel away. Not much difficulty encountered when eating it using a spoon and fork. The rice came with fried spring onions and I mixed it in. This ends up making it very crunchy and I could hardly discern the taste of the rice. I tried my sister’s portion of rice which didn’t have the onions, and there is only a very light hint of the butter. The rice is also the slightly soggy version. I like the curry which came with the chicken. It is unlike any other curry I tried and it is not spicy too.

My sister ordered a noodle dish ($7) and I would say it is an acquired taste. I didn’t like it very much. But she thinks it’s nice. So there you go. Taste is subjective.

We got the Myanmar Milk Tea ($3+) and it tastes like the Yin Yang (tea + coffee) drink at Chinese restaurants. The tea is very overpowers the milk, thus resulting in a more potent tea taste.

Overall I had say I am not very impressed by the food and the total bill came up to $33+. Still it is worth a try.

Bo Lo Bun Smile Dec 31, 2013

Besides their restaurants, Crystal Jade also has a bread franchise selling breads, pastries and cakes.

I like Bo Lo Baos (Pineapple Buns) and so before I exited IMM I got a Hong Kong Bo Lo Bun ($1.30) from the Crystal Jade Bread Bakery. They have a few versions, one with the BBQ Pork (Char Siew) or the Plain one. I got the latter and although it might taste better with the char siew, I wanted to savour the bun without any extra flavours. The top of the bun provided some sweetness to the bread which is what I like about this bread. It is quite crumbly and so very flaky. Be careful when eating this bun, it can create quite a mess.

Still it is not too heavy on the palate and I easily finished the light and fluffy bread.

Pizza OK Dec 31, 2013

I have wanted to try the pizza at this shop after my last visit to IMM. Today while I was back to do some shopping, I decide to get the Chicken Sausage Pizza ($4.50, additional 50cents for takeaway) to share with my sister.

Personally I wasn’t too impressed by the staff who took my order. He sounded quite gruff and did not notice that I was standing there waiting for my order to be taken. Anyway I was told to wait for 10 minutes.

The pizza is prepared on the spot and put into the oven. After it is done, it is sliced into 9 parts and although they didn’t provide any utensils, it is easy enough to eat. I like the thin crust pizza, very crusty and it is fresh hot out of the oven. Though it is a little bit burnt at the sides, I thought it might be better to leave it inside for a little bit more. The cheese provided a little bit of texture and taste but the sausage really didn’t add to the flavour.

Overall the pizza didn’t taste like much but I think for the price paid, it is quite a good deal. Maybe next time I will come back to try stronger flavours like Tom Yum.

Colorful Ice Cream Smile Dec 31, 2013

I am often attracted to the bright colours used by Baskin-Robbins (BR) and after a day of trekking with my friend, we decided to have some ice-cream to cool ourselves off the hot and humid weather.

BR differentiates itself with its wide variety of flavours and sometimes it can be quite an adventure sampling their ice cream flavours.

I ordered the King Scoop which comes with 3 small scoops ($8). The flavours I chose were Caramel Truffle, Citrus Twist (lemon and lime) and Blackberry Yoghurt. The latter tastes like the fruitella sweets that used to be quite popular last time.

The Caramel Truffle tastes the most expensive out of the three. It is a little bit sweet, I think due to the Caramel. The Citrus Twist is super sour. I taste more of the lime than the lemon. The Blackberry Yoghurt seems to be made of artificial sweetness but it is still quite a nice dessert. Overall I had say the ice cream is great!

Green + Food Smile Dec 31, 2013

Grub is a newly established restaurant situated in Bishan Park, surrounded by lots of greenery. They have an indoor and outdoor dining area and I would recommend the latter when the weather is not rainy or too humid to soak in the greenery.

Anyway I had dinner there with my friend and the place was packed. We also ended up waiting for quite some time for our food. Still it is worth the wait. We ordered the Truffled Egg Cocotte ($7) which comes with toasted focaccia bread and a bowl of eggs topped with crispy parma ham. The bread is nice as it has been toasted and goes great with the eggs. The eggs is a little salty because of the parma ham.

I had the GRUB cheeseburger ($13) which comes with 100% freshly minced beef patty and Monterey Jack Cheese. I often avoid beef if possible but my friend highly recommended this. I like the overall presentation of the burger, similar to that of The Handburger. A wooden plate with indents for the cup of fries. The burger is not too bad but the portion is a bit too small for my liking.

We also ordered a pot of Green Tea ($5) to go with the food. Overall I had say I love the atmosphere and ambience at Grubs and would definitely return for another round of food and drinks.
