All Day BreakFast Smile Jul 01, 2013

1st tip to give anyone about this place is to make reservations! Diners will be rejected if there are no reservations made and tables are reserved. Nice deco, i'm pretty sure everyone will agree with that. Couch seats, tables, counter seats are all available. Known for its all day breakfasts, Menu wise you can also ask for the ipad menu and that's makes ordering easier with the photos. But from the crowd you can tell, its more upmarket kind of place and be prepared to pay $30 per pax for your brakfast, My latte cost $6. For breakfast i ordered the standard all day English which comes with scrambled eggs, back bacon, cumberland pork sausage, sauteed mushroom, Dad's baked beans, breakfast potatoes, grilled vine ripened tomato and signature brioche (french pastry). All these for $24. My friend's tunisian looks nice as well ($19, sizzling pan of tomato, onion, red pepper, chilli) and so is the brittany ($20, panettone french toast stacked with fresh bananas with caramel sauce).

Pub / Restaurant Style Smile Jul 01, 2013

Categories : Italian | Restaurant | Pasta | Steaks and Grills

its my first visit here after hearing quite a number of reviews about this place. First impression when u walk in, you will feel more like its a chill-out place with its large bar counter and large LCD screen TVs. Using more of a orange ambient lighting, the place sets diners back a smoothing atmosphere. The place is decorated with lots of garlic wraps and wine bottles at the side as well. Seating wise mostly for 4s, with both couch seats and standalone round and square tables both available. Kitchen is not semi open but yu do get to see the heads of the busy chefs. Back to the food, ordered gorgonzola cream pasta and chilli curry chicken pizza. The pasta is creamy potato with gorgonzola cheese served with scallop and grilled king oyster mushroom. Like the creamy base and the accompany ingredients. The addition of garlic on the pasta is a nice touch also but it did not wow me. Was hoping for more since its name is "mad for garlic" The pizza is a little to the spicy side though, it could have been better if its not. Total of 8 slices. Chicken meat is found on every slice and shredded cheese is evenly spread.. pasta cost $24.90 and pizza $19.90 before gst and svc charge. plain water is foc.

King of Fish & Chips Smile Jun 28, 2013

Categories : Fusion

Small little cafe style set up with probably just 30 seater max. They also have a pull up banner in front saying they are voted one of the best places for fish and chips. Most of the tables are suitable for couples. Lighting wise is dim but that was more for the ambiance i guess. On one end of the ceiling is also hanging an old school CRT TV which you hardly see nowadays.

Ordered mushroom soup as a appetizer $6.80, can actually taste the mushroom bits and served with a small piece of garlic toast

Mains 1 - Baked dory fish $15.80 (this is definitely worth a mention, the cheese meltdown goes very well with the dory, better than aston grill fish with herbs, the wedges at the side taste nice too)
Mains 2 - spicy tom yum pasta $16.80 (this was a little let down, with not enough kick to the taste level, it was neither here nor there, there wasn't much seafood offered as well, amunt of sauce is enough though)

Service wise could have been better as well, i had to ask for a side plate when its clear that my seafood pasta will have shells. Plus side is there's no GST was charged, according to the hand written receipt. Maybe becoz mine was a voucher purchase.

A Slice of Heaven Smile Jun 26, 2013

Categories : Bakery | Hotel

Orchid Hotel is a relatively new building in this area with f&b shops lining up the ground floor, and not more wedding boutiques! Saw the brownies offered by Baker's Story, not sure if "A slice of heaven" is their tagline but that was enough to attract me in to explore further. Decided to try out one of their pecan nut and choc chip brownie which cost me $2.30. I'm totally into choc chip stuffs so this brownie was perfect, coupled with the crunchy pecan nuts, its leaves a fantastic bite. I also like the fact the brownie doesn't just break into small pieces when bite, this baker's story one i can munch it off like a cake, nice! If only they have dine in concept where i can also order a nice latte or cuppa.

XO Fish Soup Smile Jun 20, 2013

Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Chinese | Restaurant | Seafood | Steamboat/Hot Pot | Zi Char

Have always been confused with this hongkong street franchise. Drove past this outlet a few times, seems like a popular dinner joint. Pop by for dinner around 830pm last night, there was no crowd. From the menu its pretty typical hongkong street with the ipoh sar hor fun, prawn paste chicken etc, but they do hv fish steamboat as well. Its like a coffeeshop style since no aircon but its quite airy i must say. It also looks quite newly furnished, maybe a new coat of paint has been done up recently.

Ordered the $6 fish meat bee hoon and top up $1 for extra vege. Presentation wise was quite average, with the thick beehoon, fish slice, ginger and chye sim. The fish slice is typical hongkong street standard, thick and fresh. The soup has a XO taste, nice and not overpowering the sweetness of the soup. Initially i was worried i have to top up $3 for XO version but turn out only for additional XO you need to top up. Overall didn't really wow me but still a decent eat. Only thing to gripe is there is too few fish slices.
