It's not just about the fries Smile Feb 28, 2013

The restaurant name just about says it all right? Everything with Fries. But at EwF, it's not just the sticks of fried potato that's stealing all the limelight.

Some of the latest additions to the menu include The Slider burger, EwF's answer to Burger King's longstanding (and shrinking) Mushroom Swiss burger. The Slider burger offers fresh minced beef coupled with sauteed mushrooms and crispy bacon strips all lathered with a very generous dollop of melted cheese. Talk about sinful yet satisfying, especially when taken together with the savoury garlic fries.

We tried the restaurant's take on Har Jeong Kai as well, a Cantonese dish of boneless chicken, marinated in prawn paste and served deep fried. Though interesting, I have had better iterations of the Cantonese dish elsewhere.

For those not already in the know, EwF actually offers a range of other specialties including it's One Egg Soup and a variety of tarts and cakes for the pastry lover as well. So yeah, it's not just about the fries!

Ba Mee Poo..? Smile Feb 28, 2013

Ba Mee Poo.

That's not me making funny noises or just having verbal diarrhea. In fact, that's the name of the dish I had at Bangkok Jam at Wheelock Place, translating loosely from Thai into Stir-Fried Egg Noodles with Bacon and Crabmeat.

The saying people have about bacon tasting good with anything is really hard to contend with. The fried bits of bacon lent a certain element of luster to the dish and together with the unique taste of the egg noodles as well as the chunks of crabmeat, culminated in a very savoury dish. My only complaint would just be for the size of the serving, which seemed quite lacking.

And in the true spirit of #MakanHunt-ing, I have spotted the next dish that I would like to try at the restaurant: Bangkok Jam's signature beef noodles!

I have always been fond of the casual European dining experience that Ambush offered. And previously, before the new outlet at Plaza Singapura, I was just constantly hobnobbing at the Takashimaya outlet enjoying a Bratwurst + Rosti combi or a seafood paella.

So it came as quite a pleasant surprise to me when the new Ambush at Plaza Singapura offered a slightly different and more extensive menu. I picked the Mixed Pot aka Moules/Palourde aka Mussels and Clams. You could customize your order, choosing the size of the pot (small or large at $15 or $18 respectively) as well as the style with which your mixed pot is prepared.

My choice was the Vin Blanc and Smoked Streaky Bacon, consisting of a base of white wine, flavoured with onion, garlic and parsley, and added bacon bits. The Mixed pot was served with a cupful of thick cut fries which I dipped occasionally into the broth for added flavour.

Overall, delighted with this latest find at Ambush, Plaza Singapura. Will definitely be back again soon!

Burger Atas Ahoy! Smile Feb 28, 2013

Categories : Australian / New Zealand | Restaurant | Burgers and Sandwiches | Kids-Friendly

You'll just know when new eateries open up in the heart of Orchard. Common tell-tale signs include sudden spike in human traffic within the vicinity of the eatery, a full-house sign at the shop entrance during meal times, queues and more queues. So I was quite taken by surprise when Charlie & Co., the latest burger place right smack in ION Orchard was quite empty during lunch.

Then I saw why. The menu, or more specifically the prices. The average burger ranges from $14-20 and comes separate with sides and drinks which are about $7-8 and $4 respectively. A hearty lunch might hurt quite a bit here.

Much of the negativity faded when I got my meal though. I ordered a Double Cheese and Bacon Burger ($16) together with a side of Parmesan and Truffle Fries ($7) and the presentation.. I like!

The bun atop my burger reached me gleaming, and the burger itself showcase the full pack of awesome ingredients starring the 100% Australian-bred Wagyu patty. The thick juicy patty was char-grilled magnificently enough to retain a smokey flavour that added on the the savoury goodness of that marbled beef. lol The patty was coated with aged Cheddar cheese (albeit not so melted) and crispy prime back bacon. That's a killer combination right there!

My side of Parmesan and Truffle Fries came presented nicely enough - thick-cut fries sprinkled with parmesan cheese flakes. While you can't really go far wrong with fries, I did feel the injustice of paying $7 for truffle fries when the taste of truffle did not quite come through. So I'd have to give a so-so rating for the fries at least.

All in all my lunch at Charlie & Co. took a hefty toll of approximately $24. On the positive side, the restaurant was spick and span, even spacious, with courteous service staff that actually went table to table asking for feedback on our food. I can at least take heart that my feedback about the fries will be taken into consideration, and probably drop by again when my wallet forgets the pinch tongue

Handmade Gyoza Hailing from Osaka Smile Feb 28, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Japanese

Came across Osaka Ohsho at the basement of Raffles City the other day and just randomly decided to pick it for dinner. It was definitely quite a good choice on hindsight.

While it is more open-concept than your average restaurant, space is definitely a highly-prized commodity with fellow dinners sitting less than an arm's length to both sides. So private conversations are probably a difficult thing to manage here.

Osaka Osho translates to 'The King of Gyoza in Osaka' and as you would expect, the restaurant boasts of handmade gyoza as their specialty. The filling is wrapped in the restaurant's special wonton wrapper which is much thinner than what I usually get elsewhere, letting you bite into the juicy insides without having to get through too much dough. Loved the golden brown sear on the gyoza!

To go with my gyoza, I had the fried chicken. Served in bite-sized chunks, the crispy fried chicken were literally nuggets of indulgences, with that aftertaste of ginger that really wakes up the palate.

I would go further to recommend that diners pick up the restaurant's offer for additional chilli oil at just $1 for a small servings. A blend of chilli, some herbs and spice as well as chilli oil, the concoction was reminiscent of the seasoning that went with instant noodle brand, Chu Qian Yi Ding. For those who usually have a hard time finishing their bowl of rice, maybe this would help!

At $10.90 for a set meal including a main course, gyoza, rice and miso soup, I'd think that Osaka Ohsho offers a great value deal. So if you're looking for a good place in town for even dinner, give it a go!
