Nando's! Smile Feb 03, 2013
Categories : Portuguese | Steaks and Grills

Since its introduction to Singapore, Nando's has made its mark on the local dining scene offering Portuguese-style chicken prepared in a myriad of ways, accompanied by the brand's signature Peri Peri sauce.

Also known in Swahili as Bird's Eye Chili, Peri Peri sauce is available with different spice levels for individual palettes. While I have the penchant for some spices to really give that kick in my food, I opted for mildly spicy just to avoid sweating bullets during a meal.

I ordered the quarter chicken meal with came with 2 side dishes of my choice - garlic bread and potato wedges. The chicken was the star of the plate, gorgeously flamed-grilled with grill lines seared beautifully onto the skin. The drumstick was also beautifully seasoned and the meat still moist and succulent.chopstick

For the sides, I would also like to give special mention to the garlic bread. The dish by itself is pretty standard, but the ones at Nando's were just better toasted in particular, crispy and really working it with the irresistible aroma of garlic.

Revisiting the Classics Smile Jan 31, 2013

As a kid, Swensen's was always the restaurant of choice. For a kid growing up with an increasing love for Western cuisine and the great seductive sundaes to choose from, it was really a no-brainer.

Though I might have outgrown Swensen's in the past couple of years, it was still great to walk in to Swensen's at ION Orchard the other day to order classics that I grew up with.
Chicken Baked Rice

Chicken Baked Rice

The Chicken Baked Rice was as good as I remembered, tender chunks of chicken embedded across the dish, with melted cheese atop the rice. Pure savoury goodness. Yum! Only gripe was the price - at $13.90, it is a far cry when i last ordered the dish at a simple $9.90. Ouch!
Sticky Chewy Chocolate

At the time of my visit, Swensen's was having a lunch promotion of a free sundae with every main course ordered. lol
I just couldn't let up on the chance at a Sticky Chewy Chocolate sundae. 2 scoops of Sticky Chewy Chocolate ice cream coated lavishly with hot fudge and sprinkled with Hershey's Chocolate Chips and a chocolate wafer to boot.

While there might be better tasting meals and ice cream out there, this lunch promotion is really hard to beat. So do hurry down!

F&F - Furniture & Food OK Jan 31, 2013

Categories : Western Variety | Kids-Friendly

Swedish Furniture Giant IKEA has long since been frequented by many, not just for the furniture but the luscious meals served at the in-store bistro. While its swedish meatballs were its claim to fame earlier on, the bistro has since added on to its repertoire of food choices.

As an appetizer or finger food, I would thoroughly recommend the fried chicken wings which are simple aces in my book. Fried till a deep golden brown, the wings are crispy on the outside, with tender succulent flesh on the inside.

Alternatively, try the Gravad Lax Plate - smoked salmon slices dressed lavishly with some herbs and spices along the sides.

For my main course, I picked the Roast Beef w/ Mushroom Sauce. The roast beef wasn't really restaurant quality, but at such a affordable pricing and coming with a free drink, it was a pretty easy decision to make.

So next time if you are ever at IKEA, don't just jump straight into furniture shopping. Take sometime and enjoy the food. Especially the wings!

Categories : Singaporean | Hawker Centre

Fondly known amongst Singapore males as the Army Market, Golden Mile Food Centre offers a myriad of awesome hawker food. Chief among them would be Yew Chuan Claypot Rice. Its popularity attested to by the long queues during mealtimes each day.

Given the traditional means of preparation, authentic Claypot Rice is probably not for someone looking for a quick bite. To bring out the flavours within the rice and meats, each pot is prepared on order, and simmered over charcoal fire for the best tastes, taking approximately 15mins each. Depending on the number of people sharing (or the size of your appetite if you are going solo), there are a range of sizes to choose from: $5, $10, $15, $20, $25. Just as a rough guide, a $15 pot would probably suffice for a group of 3.

At Yew Chuan Claypot Rice, the stall owner is lavish with ingredients, the pot of rice is peppered with chunks of chicken, chinese sausage and salted fish, lathered in a dark soya sauce. The effort that goes into preparation is evident, when the aroma just hits you when the dish is served to you at your table. The charred bits at the side of the pot can also be scraped off and eaten, given that sinful burnt crunch.

To top off the meal, one can also opt for vegetables cooked in sesame oil, which goes smoothly with the charred flavour of the claypot rice.

Hawker Binge - Baguette Delight! Smile Jan 31, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Hawker Centre

Think Baguette and one might naturally relate to classy European restaurants or upmarket bakeries. But I think I've found just the perfect exception with Mr. Baguette at Golden Mile Food Centre.

Just one of the hawker stalls among many, Mr. Baguette first caught my attention with wafts of aroma of fresh baked pastries and bread. What really piqued my curiosity was the usage of baguettes in most items on the menu, be it tart, toast or even pizza!

One of the signature dishes on the menu is the Mr. Baguette Tart - a play on traditional egg tart perhaps, with the custard nestled in a cup made of baguette, toasted to a crisp on the outside.

A new addition to the manu was the Tiramisu Toast and it garnered high praises all round. The light cappuccino fragrance from the tiramisu is complemented with slices of almond sprinkled liberally atop the toasted baguette. A winning combination.

Best of all, both items cost just $1.20! Great tasting food without breaking the bank. Thumbs up!
