drop of standard
Cries 7 days ago
Disappointed by the drop of standard compare to my previous visit which was more than 6 months ago. Despite the many celebrities photos hanging all around the shop, I guess there's really nothing much to shout out about the food here, except for their pig trotters in black sauce. The soup tasted so peppery and salty, zero taste of the ribs or herbs and I feel like I am drinking just pepper soy sauce soup. The pork ribs (I chose to have the long pork ribs) is tough and chewy, the meat not tearing off from the bones easily. Really really disappointed by their standard now.

the soup eeez too salty!
Just OK 2013-01-30

In my ideal world,
I thought this would be the perfect late night comfort food.
I mean, even Chow Yun Fatt loves it.
Or so the papers say.

Go for the long ribs.
$8.
Go ahead.
Indulge yourself a little.

But I'm hardly a fan of pork ribs.
I just wanted soup!

Beancurd sheets smile

Beancurd Puffs

So all these side dishes were good.
Then what was my issue with Founder?

The soup! Oh my. sad
The soup eeez too salty!
Imagine the salt overpowering pepper.
I couldn't even bring myself to ask for a refill.
And why there was a queue for this,
I could not comprehend. sad

Recommended Dish(es):

^Famous Bak Kut Teh^06/01/2013
Smile 2013-01-07
As a pork hunter, Bak Kut Teh is one of my favourite food. In Singapore, Bak Kut Teh is normally cooked in pepper-tasted soup, unlike Malaysia, most of the Bak Kut Teh soups are herbal-based.

Along the Balestier Road, Founder Bak Kut Teh is the best for me. The place is so famous until we actually queued up 30 minutes for a table for two persons by the road side. Indeed, walls inside the restaurant are filled with the numerous photographs of famous artists, either local or overseas.

   Bak Kut Teh

I prefer the Teochew style, light in color but uses more pepper in the soup. It was decent but peppery, melting my heart everytime I drink. Costed $6.00 per bowl, excluding the rice.

   Yu Char Kway

Unfortunely, it no longer hot and crispy when it was served. A bit oily for me, they should reheated it before the serving. Costed $1.50 per small bowl.

   Steamed Peanuts

Nothing special for the peanuts, the taste just nice which was not too salty. Costed $2.00 per plate ordered.

   Braised Pork Ribs

Never thought the pork ribs not only could look so attractive but also yummy and flavourful. I can say that the quality of braised pork ribs has always been consistent all throughout. Costed $7.00 for regular bowl for two persons.

   Homemade Luo Han Guo

Fresh and natural drinks, it was the healhier choice among all beverages. Costed $1.80 each cup.

Even when the time we are leaving the place, there was still a snake-like queue waiting outside for their turn to get in, just because for one bowl of bak ku teh.

Bak Kut Teh for Supper!
Smile 2012-12-23
Today I'm going to recommend to you this famous Bak Kut Teh at Balestier!
TADA! It's the Founder Bak Kut Teh aka 發起人肉骨茶!!

So, went for some last minute Christmas shopping, and late night shopping for daily necessities at Mustafa.
After a long day of weekend shopping, we just hope for a bowl of sizzling hot soup, so we were cracking our heads where to head for supper!

On the way, we passed by this Founder Bak Kut Teh shop, which really attracted me on the first sight. What's special is that, their whole shop wallpaper is full of photos! Photos with famous celebrities all over the world! (Yes, I mean the four walls. ) shocked

Okay, so here comes the food!

   Bak Kut Teh Ribs.

The Bak Kut Teh ribs! (My fave!)
$8 - One size only.

   Bak Kut Teh.

The ermmm ... also Bak Kut Teh, but different parts of meat.
$6 - One size only.

   You Tiao

You Tiao!
Complimentary with Bak Kut Teh. tongue

Mixed pork kidney, liver and fen chang.

Mixed pork kidney, liver & intestines soup.
YUMMY, no smelly smell. lol

The braised pork trotters!
Available in big and small.

   Salted Vegetables

And the salted vegetables!
$3.

______________________________

The food is sincerely nice, not absolutely fabulous, but still worth 4/5 thumbs up!
The first two bowl of soups served were warm, not sizzling hot, which is not what I expected as Bak Kut Teh should be served hot instead of warm.
However, the third bowl of Bak Kut Teh which we ended up ordering again, is sizzling hot and was more up to what I expected at first.

But overall, the heat has not affected much of it's taste.
Furthermore, the you tiao is the best part!
Imagine that crispy you tiao, being throughly soaked inside the bak kut teh, and the soup just burst in your mouth. SHIOK!

The braised pork trotters were not really their signature dishes, so it's actually tasting quite normal.
It's like you can go outside and get similar tasting braised sauce.

For the salted vegetables, it's actually quite up to my liking. Not too sweet, not too salty. Just the right portion, the right taste, the right munchy-ness.

Overall, we got three bowls of bak kut teh, one bowl of mixed pork intestines, one bowl of braised pork trotters, one plate of salted vegetables & drinks at total $48 (inclusive of GST, no service charge).

Personally I find the price reasonably priced for the yummy food, so TRY IT! tongue
It's located at 347 Balestier Road, #01-347.
Confirm no regrets! lol

So, that's all for today! GOOD NIGHT Open ricers! KAN FAI LO! bowl

Worth the queue!
Smile 2012-11-26
Had BKT craving for dinner again! This time my pilgrimmage led me to the famous Founder BKT.

The spare ribs soup is white based and peppery - my favourite! smile Spare ribs were tender and I coaxed the meat off its bones with a soft tug of my teeth, super awesome! Also ordered the Kidney soup, another of my favourites, and it didn't disappoint in terms of serving size and quality.

Companions and I spammed the side dishes too - apart from the essential youtiao and preserved veg, we got ourselves some pig skin, pig's intestines (braised to perfection), braised peanuts and tang-oh *(i loved the soupy tang-oh!!). Try their herbal drinks and longan (i think), they are pretty good according to my dinner companions.

Service was brisk and pretty efficient after you survive the initial queue. Oh, the place is airconditioned too.

This place is great as they open till past midnight. I love to drizzle my entire rice with dark soya sauce and submerged all the you tiao into the soup. I like the taste of the soup as it is really flavourful with a tinge of peppery taste. It is not that spicy and is pretty tolerable for people who can't take spicy stuffs. Everything is nice except their pork ribs which are pretty hard to bite. We ordered tou fu skin as well. Some pieces are a little hard and dry. Service is amazing as they will really recommend you what to order!

really delicious bak kut teh
Smile 2012-05-05
My sister was craving for bak kut teh in the middle of the night so I drove her and my mum to founder bak kut teh for supper. The bak kut teh taste really good, the soup is very peppery and tasty. It is not too salty and very rich in flavours. The bak kut is very tender and soft, it went well with the chilli black sauce dip. We ordered you tiao and salted vegetable. The you tiao goes really well with the soup, it absorbs the soup and softens. The salted vegetable is really nice, not too salty and goes well with the rice. It was very satisfying but also a little pricey, nevertheless, for such good meal, it was worth it.

This 24-hours Bak Kut Teh shop is along Balestier Road. Their Bak Kut Teh was quite tender but a bit expensive. Their side dishes were rather well-cooked and tasty. Parking is quite hard. Not likely will I go there again given that there are many other choices around. Overall, its ok only.

I prefer this to the herbal style bak kut teh. I like it nicely peppery and it tasted even more pepper when eaten hot. The pork ribs were only 4 pieces but quite meaty. I like to dip inside the thick dark sauce with red cut chillies in it. I also like to pour some soup into my rice. I like to eat with you tiao. I will thrown the you tiao in the soup and let it soaked for a while before i dip it into the dark sauce and eat it with rice. Nice and satisfied.

The standard has dropped for this Bak Kut Teh. It used to taste much nicely but the last time when i was there, it tasted very peppery to my liking. Per serving is at $6.00 more expensive that what you get at other places. I think it is not very value for money as the serving is quite small. But other than the soup was too peppery, the pork ribs were quite ok.

The Big Name in Bak Kut Teh.
Just OK 2012-01-11

   Pig's Trotter.

This is one of the big name in Bak Kut Teh. I have came across quite a lot of reviews about them. And, most of these reviews agreed on a significant drop in their standard as well as bad service encountered. I have decided to check it out myself when i happened to be in the vicinity for lunch.

I was there at about 2pm. I waited for the lady in-charge to finish taking the order for a table before placed my order with her. I ordered for the smallest portion of braised pig's trotter and bak kut teh to be taken away.

After done ordering, someone right behind wanted to take away as well but the lady in-charge informed him that they have already closed. I did not realise that they operated from 12 pm to 2 pm then 6 pm to 2.30 am so it must be lucky day for me to be able to place the last order before they closed. I paid a total of $12.00 for both.

The portion seemed a little smaller for both braised pig's trotter and bak kut teh but at a higher price as compared to others out there. The taste of the bak kut teh was a little too peppery to my liking so i left the soup unfinished. The pork ribs were chopped into pretty small pieces and a total of 4 pieces of them in it. The pork ribs were soft and tender to the extent that it pulled away from the bone effortlessly.

The texture of braised pig's trotter got a nice softness. It was so well braised that it did not even have a bit of oiliness. Anyway, this is not the best braised pig's trotter that i have ever tasted.

I doubt i would be back specifically for both items again but i might eat it once more if i happen to be in the vicinity.

   Dinner at home.

It has been ages ever since I patronise this bak kut the store.
We have ordered a plate of salted vegetables for $3, two bowls of pork rib soup, one bowl of pig kidney and one prime rib soup whereby the meat is less fattening. The service is good; they are very willing to refill soup for us.
The soup is very peppery, has the sweet taste as well and it is hot!

Worst bakuteh ever
Cries 2011-08-26

The first thing that you notice coming in is the wall of celebrity photos on the wall and the crowd. This really raises our expectations because apparently many magazine and tourist recommend this place. During weekend its hardly to get seat and the q might takes u more than an hour and still there is people q-ing.

But I never like this bakuteh at all.

The bakuteh here are not like how other served, it is so peppery and garlicky, u dont feel the herbs at all! why not just call pepper soup? The ingredient arent generous, and expensive. i dont feel the fragrant of the rice either. Overall very cheap bakuteh with less variety.
