Food Prepared With Love at HJH Maimunah Restaurant & Catering
2013-11-05
Madam Mastura Didih belongs to the third generation of family who owns HJH Maimunah Restaurant and Catering. Her grandmother, who dabbled into just about everything one could imagine, started the business in the early 90s. Then, her mother took charge of running the restaurant, which she named after the great lady who started it all. She added HJH, which means hajah in Muslim, to highlight the fact that dining at their place is a culinary pilgrimage and every dish they offer shall awaken any person's senses.
The first outlet of HJH Maimunah Restaurant & Catering still stands proud at Jalan Pisang
To this day, their first outlet stands proud at the vibrant Jalan Pisang. The second branch is at Joo Chiat Road. Both specialise in what they call as Kampung-style cuisine: Malay and Indonesian food that are prepared in a traditional way. However, to keep up with the present times and the ever-changing preferences of foodies, they came up with more modern dishes, which can be categorised as “fusion.” Customised Catering To Suit Your Needs
The restaurant and catering business offers over 70 items on their menu
Just last year, the family introduced a new arm to their growing business—catering. Unlike some caterers who prefer to serve easy-to-prepare dishes, Mastura said that their home-cooked meals are made with love. Only they can promise to fill your guests’ tummies with Ayam Masak Merah, Tahu Telor Jakarta, Ikan Asam Pedas, and Padang Beef Rendang. The latter is tedious to prepare because the meat has to be slow-cooked for hours to get the desired texture. So, the kitchen starts work at 3am every day just to be able to serve their customers Rendang that is done the right way.
HJH Maimunah Catering specialises on hearty food which can definitely fill customers’ tummies
Depending on the occasion, they also offer quick but hearty bites in their packages
Aside from these signatures, they also offer 70 varieties of dishes. Customers may feel overwhelmed just by looking at the menu; so, Mdm Mastura and her team have come up with different packages to suit every event — whether it’s for a networking session, birthday party, anniversary, or wedding. Smaller gatherings can opt for the Economy or Bento package, where each packed food (with about 4 dishes) go for as low as $8. Larger groups are recommended to get the Buffet Catering, where there are more sumptuous choices. The package, which is about $11 to $15 per pax, also comes with a complimentary ulam or traditional salad with Sambal Belacan. Spacious Venue Suited For Any Gathering Mdm Mastura shares that one advantage of working with their catering business is they can easily customise their menu. “We can work around any budget,” she said. Given the set meals, clients have the freedom to choose whatever food they want to indulge in. With a strong team behind her, they can easily cater to 50 to over a thousand people in one gathering.
For big functions, the Jalan Pisang outlet has a second level which can accommodate about 150 people
For those who are looking for a venue, space is also not an issue for both their outlets. The one at Jalan Pisang is spacious enough to accommodate 150 people while the Joo Chiat restaurant can fit well over 250 people. Both Jalan Pisang and Joo Chiat have 2 levels of dining space and have lift access. It has only been a year since the restaurant introduced its catering business to the public. So far, Mdm Mastura is quite happy with the clients’ feedback. “They really love the comfort that we offer, and we’re thankful for that because we really work hard to cook them.” With her whole family involved in their restaurant and catering business, there’s no other way but to keep the business going and make more people happy with hearty Kampung fare.
