Backstage café is located in the industrial area away from crowded teen hangouts. There is just something so mysteriously attractive about dining in areas away from the hustle and bustle of rushing crowds. (That, coupled with the fact that it was just a couple of bus stops away from the Aljunied train station, made it a lot more enticing!)There were plenty of seats and the seating arrangement was very spacious. Another huge plus point! Since it was a weekday, their weekday 3 course lunch which consists of a soup, a main that you pick from 8 choices, and dessert. On the whole, the food was really average, but the ambience and the friendly staff made up for it. It might have been because the lunch options were rather limited; we couldn’t try the other options on the menu which were only available after 2pm on weekdays. Please refer to www.ieatandeat.com for details review. continue reading

It was time for brunch and off I went with *Katherine, at this hidden cafe in an industrial area - Backstage Cafe.Backstage Cafe provides the perfect hideaway for busy executives to relax and have a drink or two, and the spacious cafe hosts a very relaxing ambience ideal for meals, chit-chat or hanging out. I heard that this place was started by media stars hence if one is lucky, they may catch sight of media artistes hanging out here or using this place as a location set.The Rainbow Cake (SGD$7.50) was the item I ordered first, since I have been having craving for it for a while. The bright colors were pure temptation, and I dug in happily. The first couple of bites gave us the impression that it was too hard and dry, but then we realized that a 7-layered cake could not be too moist - if not the cake would "sink". The texture grew on us, and the different colored layers provided different sweet flavors - the most prominent being lemon with its citrusy, sour charms. We had the Crabmeat Pasta (SGD$16.00) next, cooked in pesto sauce and garlic, with chunks of crab meat and springy noodles. It was a rather tasty dish, but we thought the sapid sweetness of crabmeat should've been more prominent, instead of being obliterated by the tiny garlic cubes. The Tori Karaage - fried chicken cubes (SGD$6.00) - were served next - a little disappointing. The chicken chunks were not crispy enough; in fact it was rather oily / moist, with lots of fatty meats. The taste was quite all right, but being a fan of non-fats meat, I nibbled on tiny slivers of flesh and discarded the rest (a sinful act of waste of food, yes, regrettably). For more detailed information and photos, please visit:http://thearcticstar.blogspot.sg/2014/06/brunch-at-backstage-cafe.html continue reading

For more details, please visit http://foodesteem.blogspot.com/2014/06/backstage-cafe.htmlDrinks - Iced Cappuccino ($5.50), and Iced Cafe Latte ($5.50). If you prefer to hot version, it is just a dollar less.Main - Smoked Salmon Benedict ($15.00). Freshly poached eggs on toast accompanied with sliced salmon top with hollandaise sauce and mesculin salad. I love poached eggs which are nicely done with runny yolks. The one that came to our table, has one almost cooked, but another to make up for former Main - Backstage Breakfast Combo ($15.00). Freshly toasted bread with bacon, honey baked ham, sauteed mushroom, grilled fresh tomatoes with melted cheese and mesculin salad, accompanied with choice of egg (scrambled/egg white/poached/sunnyside). Scrambled is a little overcooked, which wasn't the wobbling type I wanted Generally the rest of the dish is fine.Crispy Fried Chicken Wing ($8.00). 4 pieces of wings which are fried to crisp and juicy in the meat. Thumbs! For more details, please visit http://foodesteem.blogspot.com/2014/06/backstage-cafe.html continue reading

I like to think that cafes which are usually out of the way from the main roads with few human traffic is considered “Hidden Finds”.Well that was until I learn about Backstage cafe which is located in a “bird dont lay egg” ulu like mad location that I am pretty sure if I ever try driving there without my GPS, I will be hopelessly lost. Despite that, it was a foodie trip which I dont regret and definitely look to be heading there often in future for the excellent food served up to us that day.Once you step in, you will be overwhelmed by how spacious the cafe is, emitting a welcoming and casual vibe. I like how the service counter is right in the middle of the restaurant so that we can see the barristers busy at work, serving up their artful creations to eager hungry customers. Tall ceiling, warm lightning, sofa and table seatings, the Backstage cafe is definitely a cozy spot for dinners with friends.Given the out of the way location, this would also be a nice spot for those who are seeking a quiet spot for their afternoon coffee and readings. With Papa Palheta supplying the coffee beans, the cappuccino and mocha was robust and balanced in flavour. Accompanied with delicate latte art, I am sure this pretty drink will definitely make anyone’s day better!SGD 4It is no surprise that this was one of the signature dishes at Backstage Cafe,. Thick rich peppery sauce was drenched all across the tender soft meat which doesn’t come with the “porky smell”. The sundried tomato butter also adds on a rich flavour onto the meat.To make the meal less sinful, equally yummy buttered mash potatoes and well seasoned sauteed vegetables were served on the side.SGD 18Spicy sweet crab meat fillings were sandwiched in between thick slices of bread which helps mute the spiciness of the dish. The chunky mash potatoes drenched in brown sauce was velvety in texture and definitely not to be missed. Another recommended dish, especially for lovers of spicy fiery flavours!SGD 10Boy did these set our tongues on fire! I had to gulp water down after each bite case it was just so crazy spicy! Definitely shiok to enjoy with some icy cold beer or as a snack. If you are having the buffalo wings, try not to order with other spicy items, Because we were so spiced up by the Chilli Crab Panini, this one came as a overkill for us.VERDICTDefinitely a place worth going back, it is rare to find a place which serves great food in such generous portions! For weekdays, set lunch menus are available from 11am – 3pm and they are offering set meals as low as $9!Great service with friendly smiles, I definitely see myself heading there over during one of the Saturdays to perhaps try out their desserts and all day breakfast menu and chicken roulade which was sold out during my visit. If only they are opened on Sundays where I have the time to gather my friends for brunch.Read more reviews @ RoundTumTums.com continue reading

I love exploring hidden cafes and Backstage cafe is located at a super secluded place at an industry area in Kallang. I met my friend at Aljunied and we took bus 125, which is the only bus that stops directly in-front of the cafe. I ordered an eggs benedict with salmon ($15) while my friend had the eggs benny with bacon and honey baked ham ($13). I felt that the salmon was a little salty. I tried a bit of the bacon and it was nice! I'll recommend you to try the eggs benedict with bacon and ham instead of the salmon. The hollandaise sauce nicely covered the poached eggs and though our coffee tasted average, I thought that the coffee art was nice. We also ordered the Belgian waffles with ice-cream to share! However, it was served together with our mains! Well, we didn't indicate that we wanted it to be serve later but we thought desserts are usually served afterwards. We were disappointed with their service and they appear to be over staffed as well. By the time we proceed to our waffles, our ice-cream was like fully melted and our waffles turned soft. The taste is okay but I like my waffles to be crispy! continue reading
