Had lunch on a Sunday at Telok Blangah Food House -a coffeeshop in Telok Blangah Crescent. This unpretentious, chillout, coffeeshop right smack in the middle of HDBs look just like any other coffeeshop. There is a stall selling 'Ban Mian', which includes fish soup, ban mian and other noodle soups but I'd say don't bother with the soup dishes.The best out of all would be the (dry) dumpling noodles. The best out of all would be the (dry) dumpling noodles. For $3, you get a substantial portion of U-Mian, still springy of course, with meat dumplings (normal gyozas that are boiled) -but here's the fantastic part. The brown sauce that is poured over the noodles is what makes this dish spectacular. The gooey brown sauce (similar to the Lor Mee gravy) is poured over the noodles generously. The gravy tastes salty, but not too starchy. It has a hint of mushrooms and the meaty flavour of chicken stock. The vegetables aren't overcooked too (you can still see the fresh green in your noodles!)!
Garnished with some fried shallots, it is magnificent -a simple dish with a generous serving of 5 dumplings, with such a delicious sauce! If you decide to take away, it's an extra 20cents, but I've discovered that soaking the noodles in this gravy for an extra 5-10 minutes makes a real difference to the dish too -the flavour gets absorbed by the noodles and all that gooey goodness is locked in. But keep it any longer than that, the dish becomes soggy/cold and the whole taste is lost. It is best eaten hot, within 10 minutes!Taste and price-wise, it is a delightful surprise in an unassuming coffee shop. Must-try!!
